Derivation Of Risk Based Wipe Surface Screening Levels For Industrial Scenarios, Lisa M. May, Bonnie Gaborek, Tony Pitrat, Laura Peters
Derivation Of Risk Based Wipe Surface Screening Levels For Industrial Scenarios, Lisa M. May, Bonnie Gaborek, Tony Pitrat, Laura Peters
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
The environmental characterization of building interiors and other surfaces has generally been performed with wipe-sampling because it is a non-destructive technique. There is no consensus, however, as to the interpretation of the results of wipe-sampling. Specifically, there is not a standardized method to determine if chemicals found at sampled levels pose a threat to human health. A methodology was developed, based on acceptable health risk levels, to derive screening levels for evaluating wipe-sampling results pertaining to industrial scenarios. The methodology was based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Region IX Preliminary Remediation Goal (PRG) approach; a multi-exposure methodology …

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
It was recently demonstrated that mutations in the human SPTLC1 gene, encoding the Lcb1p subunit of serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT), cause hereditary sensory neuropathy type I (1, 2). As a member of the subfamily of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate enzymes known as the α-oxoamine synthases, serine palmitoyltransferase catalyzes the committed step of sphingolipid synthesis. The residues that are mutated to cause hereditary sensory neuropathy type I reside in a highly conserved region of Lcb1p that is predicted to be a catalytic domain of Lcb1p on the basis of alignments with other members of the α-oxoamine synthase family. We found that the corresponding mutations …

Abstract
Background: Changing etiologic patterns and the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance, particularly an increase in macrolide-resistant pneumococcal bacteremia, are causing physicians to adopt new approaches to the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).
Objective: The relative efficacy and tolerability of levofloxacin monotherapy and azithromycin and ceftriaxone combination therapy were assessed in hospitalized adults with moderate to severe CAP.
Methods: This Phase IV, multicenter, open-label, randomized trial compared 2 treatment regimens: (1) levofloxacin 500 mg PO or IV q24h, and (2) azithromycin 500 mg IV q24h for ≥2 days plus ceftriaxone 1 g IV q24h for 2 days, …

The Administration's Approach To The Esa: Building A Stewardship Ethic For The 21st Century, Amy Klee
The Administration's Approach To The Esa: Building A Stewardship Ethic For The 21st Century, Amy Klee
United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
When President Nixon signed the Endangered Species Act (ESA) into law in 1973, it is unlikely that anyone imagined the pivotal role it would play in a wide range of land and water management decisions. There are now over 1,200 species of plants and animals listed as threatened or endangered in the United States. Certain areas of the country that historically have had a great diversity of species are now home to large numbers oflisted plants and animals. California, for example, has 292 listed species, and Alabama has 125. In some areas, every major land and water management decision or …
Managing Swine Dietary Phosphorus To Meet Manure Management Goals, Mike Brumm, Charles A. Shapiro, William L. Kranz
Managing Swine Dietary Phosphorus To Meet Manure Management Goals, Mike Brumm, Charles A. Shapiro, William L. Kranz
Nebraska Swine Reports
A demonstration was carried out for 15 months at a 1,200-head growing- finishing facility in Holt County, Neb. The purpose was to document the impact of diet formulation on phosphorus excretion and the associated land area needed to utilize the phosphorus in the accumulated manure. The demonstration facility had four 300-head rooms. Prior to the demonstration, pigs in all rooms were fed diets formulated to contain 0.55-0.57% total phosphorus for all phases of growth. For the demonstration, two rooms were fed diets formulated to the University of Nebraska recommended levels for available phosphorus. The other two rooms were fed diets …
Influence Of Linoleic Acid Isomers On Body Fat, Kim Hargrave, Kristin Nollette, Merlyn K. Nielsen, Jess L. Miner
Influence Of Linoleic Acid Isomers On Body Fat, Kim Hargrave, Kristin Nollette, Merlyn K. Nielsen, Jess L. Miner
Nebraska Swine Reports
In two studies, mice were fed diets containing either individual conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) isomers or a mixture of isomers in the presence or absence of dietary essential fatty acids. Mice fed the C18:2 Δ10,12 CLA isomer lost as much body fat as mice fed a mixture of isomers. This effect was not observed when the mice were fed the C18:2 Δ9,11 isomer or when feed intake was restricted. The loss of body fat was much greater in mice consuming an essential fatty acid deficient diet versus a control diet. This supports our hypothesis that for CLA to deplete body …
Effects Of Glutamine On Growth Performance And Small Intestine Villus Height In Weanling Pigs, Steven J. Kitt, Phillip S. Miller, Austin Lewis, Robert L. Fischer
Effects Of Glutamine On Growth Performance And Small Intestine Villus Height In Weanling Pigs, Steven J. Kitt, Phillip S. Miller, Austin Lewis, Robert L. Fischer
Nebraska Swine Reports
The pig’s small intestinal structure and function is altered during the days that follow weaning. As a consequence, the digestive and absorptive capacity of weanling pigs may decrease during this period, and this may be partially responsible for the post-weaning growth lag. Additionally, health benefits may be associated with an improved small intestinal structure and function during the early post-weaning period. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of crystalline glutamine and (or) diet complexity on small intestine villus height and growth performance of 18-day-old pigs. During the 21-day trial, no differences in villus height were observed between pigs …
Update On The Economics Of Feeding Ractopamine (Paylean™) To Finishing Pigs, Duane Reese, Larry L. Bitney
Update On The Economics Of Feeding Ractopamine (Paylean™) To Finishing Pigs, Duane Reese, Larry L. Bitney
Nebraska Swine Reports
Ractopamine is a feed additive that improves feed efficiency, daily gain, and carcass merit in finishing pigs. An economic feasibility analysis on the feeding of 4.5 and 9.0 g/ton ractopamine to finishing pigs fed a 1% lysine, corn-soybean meal diet for an average of 29 days before slaughter was conducted. The analysis was performed in two stages: 1) an economic benefit for ractopamine was calculated from revenues due to improved feed efficiency, daily gain and carcass yield (dressing percent), and 2) the amount of a carcass lean premium needed per pig to recover the added cost of feeding ractopamine was …
Applicability Of High-Rise™ Hog Housing For Finishing Operations, Richard R. Stowell
Applicability Of High-Rise™ Hog Housing For Finishing Operations, Richard R. Stowell
Nebraska Swine Reports
The design of High-Rise™ swine facilities allows the generation of a solid, manure-laden material from hogs raised in confinement housing with slatted floors. The volume of manure that must be handled annually can be reduced through continuous moisture loss that takes place within the system’s drying bed and recycling of bed material. Recycling typically involves mixing material twice a year — at the end of finishing periods. Moisture contents of twice-recycled manure-laden bed material ranged between 55-65% with continuous aeration for three years of production. This moisture range makes the material acceptable directly as feedstock for composting. Ammonia emissions should …
Silk Underwear For Ny Swells In The Age Of Victoria, Diane Maglio
Silk Underwear For Ny Swells In The Age Of Victoria, Diane Maglio
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
This appears to be an age of silk. The correspondent of a country paper, writing from New York, says that men are becoming very luxurious, and their… wardrobes and repositories for personal belongings display tastes more costly than those of women…. [as they put on] underwear of the softest, richest knitted silk.
During the last quarter of the 19th century affluent men of leisure and fashion had many hours every day to “loiter at the various clubs and discuss matters of taste.” Those who displayed an exceptional interest in fashion were labeled “swells.” This research was inspired by a fictional …

The FA composition of crude catfish oil recovered from whole viscera, digestive tract, liver, gallbladder, and visceral storage fat was determined and compared with that of fillet and nugget (abdominal portion). About 34% crude fat (wet basis) could be recovered from the whole catfish viscera. FA found in crude catfish visceral oil were C14:0, C16:0, C16:1, C18:0, C18:1, C18:2, C18:3, C20:0, C20:1, C20:2, C20:3, C20:4, and C22:6, the predominant FA being C18:1, C16:0, C18:2, and C18:0. Catfish visceral oil was characterized by a high level of unsaturated FA, which was similarly found in fillet and nugget. Total unsaturated FA in …

I wrote this article to give a thorough and comprehensive overview of what such programs look like and what sort of institutional challenges arise on putting these programs together. The stimulus for doing so was the steady stream of requests, usually via email, from other college physics departments in terested in starting up their own biophysics prohgrams and from other professors wishing to teach biophysics. --author-supplied description

Structuring Lawmaking To Reduce Cognitive Bias: A Critial View, William N. Eskridge Jr., John A. Ferejohn
Structuring Lawmaking To Reduce Cognitive Bias: A Critial View, William N. Eskridge Jr., John A. Ferejohn
Faculty Articles
Our provisional view, expressed in Part I, is that cognitive psychology, in its current state of development, is best deployed as a critical theory which supplements our understanding of the operation of interest group pressure, institutional interaction, and the process of policy debate and deliberation. At this point, cognitive psychology does not constitute a new descriptive theory of the regulatory state, nor does it have any particular normative contribution beyond banally observing that rational actors better advance their goals by making accurate rather than biased judgments. Currently, cognitive psychology does not even constitute a body of learning telling us what …
Whatever Happened To G.I. Jane?: Citizenship, Gender And Social Policy In The Postwar Era, Melissa Murray
Whatever Happened To G.I. Jane?: Citizenship, Gender And Social Policy In The Postwar Era, Melissa Murray
Faculty Articles
In this Article, I argue that the GI Bill is consistent with the social welfare policies of the New Deal period, in particular the Social Security Act of 1935, and so should be examined within the analytical framework established by scholars like Linda Gordon and Theda Skocpol in their studies of the Social Security Act's social welfare programs. Although the Bill is gender-neutral on its face, it was framed by normative assumptions about military participation and work that ensured that it was socially understood to benefit male veterans.

Courting Disorder: Some Thoughts On Community Courts, Anthony C. Thompson
Faculty Articles
This Essay will use empirical and anecdotal data as well as existing literature on community courts to evaluate the effectiveness of these courts in achieving their stated objectives. In so doing, this Essay does not purport to evaluate all types of community courts. Nor will it attempt to provide an in-depth analysis of all the issues that surround the history, establishment, design, and operation of community courts. Rather, this Essay will identify certain representative problems that inevitably occur in these courts and will examine the extent to which the conflicts inherent in their operation prevent these courts from achieving their …
Eisgruber's House Of Lords, Jeremy Waldron
Eisgruber's House Of Lords, Jeremy Waldron
Faculty Articles
Professor Eisgruber, in my opinion, succeeds in rebutting originalist and naive textualist approaches to the United States Constitution. He is right, I think, in arguing that moral judgments-judgments about justice, for example, and about the rights that people ought to have against one another are inescapable in constitutional law. And if he were to make the case-which in the book he rather assumes than argues for-that many of the issues on which the Constitution instructs us to make moral judgments are issues on which sound politics requires moral judgment, I would be inclined to agree with that too. What I …

A Rational Basis For Affirmative Action: A Shaky But Classical Liberal Defense, Richard A. Epstein
Faculty Articles
I propose to outline in some detail the approach that I would take to these questions on the assumption that the only tools in the toolbox were the bare Constitutional text and a general appreciation of the Constitution as a classical liberal document, that is, that emphasizes limited government, strong protection of property rights and contractual freedoms, coupled with prohibitions against force and fraud on the one hand, and monopoly power on the other. Many people would assume, wrongly, that this systematic view of the Constitution leads to an invalidation of all affirmative action programs. But I believe that the …
Minor Rights: The Adolescent Abortion Cases, Martin Guggenheim
Minor Rights: The Adolescent Abortion Cases, Martin Guggenheim
Faculty Articles
This article focuses on two Supreme Court decisions (Planned Parenthood v. Danforth and Bellotti v. Baird) in which the Court redefined the entire conception of children's rights. The article suggests that the Supreme Court used a construct of children's constitutional "rights" to restrict the rights of children. By doing so, the Court decisively derailed an incipient children's rights movement that had the potential to liberate children from the dominion of adults. In Danforth, the Court considered for the first time the constitutionality of a state statute that contained a mandatory parental consent provision. The Court struck down that part of …
