Investigation On The Skin Structure Of Lincoln Longwool X Konya Merino Cross-Bred (F1 And B1) Sheep, Nevi̇n Kurtdede
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study was to investigate the possible changes in the skin structure of F1 and B1 cross-breeds, which were obtained by crossing Lincoln Longwools with Konya Merinos. The skin of five animals from each genotype group was used in this study. Over a period of five years and in each season, biopsy samples of various body regions (neck, flank and hip) were obtained. The results of this investigation can be summarized as follows. When compared with their pure lines, the raw skin characteristics of F1 and B1 cross-breeds were found to be superior. However, wool production in …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Following the successful treatment of a bullock with white muscle disease admitted to the Internal Medicine Clinic of Fırat University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, selenium and vitamin E deficiency was ascertained in beef cattles of the same barn. Seventeen head of beef cattle randomly selected from the barn suspected of having selenium and vitamin E deficiency and 10 clinically healthy head of beef cattle from a different barn were used. All the animals were clinically examined and blood samples were taken for laboratory analysis [serum selenium, vitamin E and A, Creatine Kinase (CK) and Aspartate Amino Transferase (AST) levels]. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate ensiling methods for more efficient and long-lasting preservation of sugar beet pulp, which is an energy-rich cheap feedstuff. For this reason, during ensiling the dry matter of sugar beet pulp was increased to 20% by adding wheat straw or grass hay. On the other hand, 1% urea + 5% beet molasses (SBPSM), and 0% urea + 5% beet molasses (SBPHM) were added to these silages containing wheat straw or grass hay respectively. Two kinds of beet pulp silages, corn silage and grass hay, were utilized in lambs in this experiment. In the …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was conducted in Seyhan River between May 1997 and May 1998. Basic haematological parameters and effects of seasonal differences on these parameters were determined in Roach (Rutilus rutilus, Linnaeus, 1758) and Spotted Barb (Capoeta barroisi, Lortet, 1894) species which had adapted to water polluted by agricultural, industrial and domestic wastes. The waste of slaughterhouses also flowed into the region. The results of the study showed that there were deviations from standard values for most of the haematological parameters for R. rutilus indicating that R. rutilus individuals were affected by environmental stress factors more than those of C. barroisi.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was carried out on isobrown chicks fed from one day old on a diet containing 1% hot red pepper. Lenfoid infiltration and hyperemic areas in the parenchym, and hypertrophy in most of the glomeruli were observed. Effects Of Source And Concentrations Of Nitrogen And Carbohydrate On Ruminal Microbial Protein Synthesis, M. Aki̇f Karsli, James R. Russell
Effects Of Source And Concentrations Of Nitrogen And Carbohydrate On Ruminal Microbial Protein Synthesis, M. Aki̇f Karsli, James R. Russell
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objective of this review was to discuss microbial protein synthesis and the effects of sources and concentrations of nitrogen and carbohydrate on microbial protein synthesis. Even though ammonia-N is a satisfactory source of nitrogen for the growth of the majority of rumen microbes, substitution of intact protein for urea usually stimulates ruminal microbial protein synthesis. While protein sources high in degradable intake protein (DIP), such as soybean meal, appear to have properties that optimize microbial protein synthesis, protein sources low in DIP, such as fish meal, appear to limit microbial protein synthesis apparantly because of the low ruminal digestibility …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Infection with the parasite Diplostomum sp. can lead to severe ocular pathology and may result in host mortalities in commercial fish farming. Here we show that such infection is rife in a major lake used for fishing in Turkey. In a study of Acanthobrama marmid fish in Keban Dam Lake, Elazığ, Turkey, we found the infection period was normally between May and September each year, and that the prevalence and abundance of eye lens parasites reached a maximum in September. Typical results of metacercariae occurrence in the fish eye included exophthalmia, local haemorrhage and lens cataract. There was a significant …

Factors affecting lamb weaning weight (WW) and the (co)variance components due to direct and maternal effects on weight were investigated using a small data set based on ewes involved in an embryo transfer trial. Records of 253 Welsh Mountain lambs for adjusted 50 day weaning weight were obtained from the nucleus flock of the CAMDA co-operative breeding scheme. DFREML was used for variance component analyses. Significant fixed effects included in the model were rearing dam age, sex, rearing type and year. Six different models were used to analyse variance components. Obtained h^2 walues from the models were 0.104, 0.034, 0.057, …

The experimental design was reported. At the end of the observation period, specimens harvested from the main trunk of the facial nerve arising from the stylomastoid foramen, the repaired site and three branches of this nerve were examined histologically and histomorphometrically with respect to myelin area, axon number and nerve fiber diameter. Reduced fibrosis and improved …

Transformation And Stability Of Cloned Polysaccharidase Genes In Gram-Positive Bacteria, Mehmet Sai̇t Eki̇nci̇, Harry J. Flint
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Polysaccharidase genes from rumen bacteria were transferred to and expressed in ruminal and non-ruminal Gram-positive bacteria. The transformation efficiency and genetic stability of polysaccharidase genes in bacteria from different habitats were investigated. PCR amplification of cloned polysaccharidase genes from Escherichia coli, Lactococcus lactis, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus sanguis and S. bovis strain 26 showed that rearrangement of plasmid and the gene fragment did not occur. The DNA band sizes from all primers agreed with the expectations of some transformants of S. bovis JB1 being rearranged. In spite of the rearrangement in S. bovis JB1 polysaccharidase activities were conserved. Growing in the …
