This study was conducted with the aim of identifying the tick species infesting cattle, sheep and goats and their seasonal activities in the Burdur area of Turkey. The study was carried out between 1 September 1999 and 31 August 2000 on animals owned by local farmers in Burdur and 14 surrounding villages. The study centres were visited twice a month. The ticks collected from animals and barns were brought to the laboratory and identified at species level by stereo-microscopic examination. A total of 756 cattle, 996 sheep and 698 goats were examined. During the study period, a total of 3280 …

Histopathology Of The Epidermal Papilloma In Cage Cultured Mirror Carp (Cyprinus Carpio) In Eğirdir Lake, Öznur Di̇ler, M. Rüştü Özen
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, the histopathology of enzootic epidermal papillomas in cage cultured mirror carp from the Liman region of Eğirdir Lake was investigated. Macroscopically, the lesions were creamy-white, had a villus-like structure and were localised in the operculum, lateral line and fins. Histopathological studies showed that lesions were the result of hyperplasia of fibrous connective tissue and epidermal tissues. The cells of both tissues were faintly stained by HxE and PAS. Under light microscopy, cytoplasmic vacuolation in epidermal cells in the lesions was prominent. Mucous cells were relatively common and larger than normal. Chemotherapy effectively cured all lesions.

The Possibility Of Using Goose Meat In The Production Of Salami, Ahmet Güner, Yusuf Doğruer, Gürkan Uçar, Hi̇lal Duygu Yörük
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this investigation was to compare some quality characteristics of goose-meat salami with those of turkey- and chicken-meat salami in order to determine its suitability for consumption and to able to use goose meat for meat product technology. The pH values of experimental samples were highest in the goose-meat salami and lowest in the turkey-meat salami. Moisture rates of samples produced with a mixture of two kinds of poultry meat were lower than those of the others. Salmonella, coliform group bacteria and yeast-mould microorganisms were negligible in the experimental salami samples. Salami samples produced only from goose meat …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
For the first time in Turkey, renal autotransplantation in 7 cats and renal allotransplantation in 7 cats having blood-crossmatch-compatible donors were performed. Immunosuppression was maintained by a prednisolone-cyclosporin combination in the renal allotransplantation group. All cats in the renal allotransplantation group died during the operation or between 3 and 72 h postoperatively. Two cats in the renal autotransplantation group survived approximately 2 years. Hyperacute or acute rejection findings were not encountered according to perioperative observations, laboratory findings or histopathological evaluations of renal allografts. The results of histopathological evaluations of renal allografts indicated acute tubular necrosis (ATN) findings caused by renal …

In this study we examined factors affecting the colonization of campylobacters in chick intestines, colonization times and elicited immune responses. In chicks, infected orally by minimal infective dose _{100} (MID_{100}), colonization in the intestines was observed to reach 100% during the 3-week period following C. jejuni and C. coli inoculation. When the SDS-PAGE protein profiles of the inoculated and isolated strains were examined similarities of 98.3% among C. jejuni strains and 98.5% among C. coli strains were determined. The results obtained from the ELISA tests performed with blood sera in the group infected with C. jejuni and in the control …

In this study, the motility and morphology of epididymal spermatozoa taken from animals fed diets contains 20% and 40% Trifolium pratense, were affected. Statistically insignificant differences in the diameter of the seminiferous tubule and the number of primary spermatocytes between the control and experimental groups were observed. Intraperitoneal LD_{50} was …

This study was performed to determine the relationship between the corpus luteum weight/diameter, follicular diameter and the levels of vitamin C, progesterone and oestradiol 17-\beta of the plasma, corpus luteum and follicular fluid of pregnant Holstein cows in a slaughterhouse. Progesterone and oestradiol 17-\beta concentrations were determined by the microtitration plate EIA method. Vitamin C levels were determined by spectrophotometer. Although there was a positive correlation between follicular fluid oestradiol 17-\beta levels and the follicle diameter in the follicular fluid, in contrast to oestradiol 17-\beta levels, small follicles have higher progesterone content than large follicles. This negative correlation was due …

Leishmaniasis is a worldwide, parasitic disease found in the Mediteranean area, Africa, Asia and Central and South America that affects mainly dogs, humans, and rodents. In this article we compared the clinical and laboratory results of leishmaniasis, which was diagnosed immunologically and histologically in a dog.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possible changes in the skin structure of F1 and B1 cross-breeds, which were obtained by crossing Hampshire Downs with Akkaramans, Awassis and Konya Merinos respectively. The skin of five animals from each genotype group was used in this study. Over a period of five years and in each season, biopsy samples of various body regions (neck, flank and hip) were obtained. The results of this investigation can be summarized as follows. When compared with their pure lines, the raw skin characteristics of F1 and B1 cross-breeds of Hampshire Down x Akkaraman …
