Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

This empirical cross-cultural research was conducted to confirm four hypotheses. The hypotheses included: 1) For American managers there will be at least a 0.55 correlation or more among their ethics, economic, and management attitudes; 2) American managers more than Danish managers will tend to emphasize control in their ethics, economic, and management attitudes; 3) Danish managers more than American managers will exhibit emphasis and correlation among Virtue Ethics, Community Capitalism, and Human Relations theories and attitudes; 4) Danish managers more than American managers will exhibit extreme managerial practice attitudes according to the Competing Values Framework. The limits of the research …

Bad Women Deserve Equal Protection: A Look At The Constitutionality Of The Florida Prostitution Statute, Patricia Padrino Jan 2002

Bad Women Deserve Equal Protection: A Look At The Constitutionality Of The Florida Prostitution Statute, Patricia Padrino

St. Thomas Law Review

Laws against prostitution are antiquated and based primarily on moral considerations. While there is moral outcry against the proliferation of prostitution, prostitutes themselves are allowed to take the blame and suffer the punishment for its practice. Although prostitution is often referred to as a victimless crime, the criminalization of prostitution certainly victimizes prostitutes. Laws criminalizing prostitution in the United States do nothing to benefit society and everything to harm prostitutes themselves. One way to attack these laws in Florida is to show that they violate the equal protection rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States. By approaching the …

Von Eiff V. Azicri: An Important Step In The Refinement Of Grandparent Visitation Analysis, Joan Catherine Bohl Jan 2002

Von Eiff V. Azicri: An Important Step In The Refinement Of Grandparent Visitation Analysis, Joan Catherine Bohl

St. Thomas Law Review

This article first examines Von Eiff's legal predecessors: earlier Florida cases that defined the constitutional dimension of familial rights and first attempted to reconcile grandparent visitation with those rights. Indeed, the stage was actually set for Von Eiff by two cases that rejected constitutional challenges to the grandparent visitation statute. The first used no supporting authority. The second equated the rights of single parents with those of married parents prior to dismissing both as unsubstantial. By chance the omissions of each of these cases left precisely the logical gap, which it seems was needed to accommodate the decisions supporting parental …

The Collapsing "No Damages For Delay" Clause In Florida Public Construction Contracts: A Call For Legislative Change, Alain Lecusay Jan 2002

The Collapsing "No Damages For Delay" Clause In Florida Public Construction Contracts: A Call For Legislative Change, Alain Lecusay

St. Thomas Law Review

The purpose of this comment is to provide a reasonable and persuasive argument in support of the proposition that Florida should abolish the draconian "No Damages for Delay" clause, as against public policy, in public construction contracts. In particular, this comment attempts to show a pervasive national trend favoring the clause's non-enforceability through myriad judicial exceptions and statutory restrictions. Part I is a primer on the public construction process. It introduces the reader to each of the facets that make up the construction process: design, bidding, award, and construction. Part II argues in favor of invalidating the NDFD clause through …

Critical Creativity: On The Convergence Of Medium Education And Media Education, Michael J. Emme Jan 2002

Critical Creativity: On The Convergence Of Medium Education And Media Education, Michael J. Emme

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Days after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in the United States I heard an interview on the radio. The short exchange, with peace educator and activist Johan Galtung, not surprisingly in light of world events, focused on conflict resolution. While I was impressed by professor Galtung's commitment to peacemaking and his real experience serving as a mediator in world conflicts, what struck me most was the word he used to describe the key ingredient in conflict resolution. That word was 'creativity'. As an artist, art educator, academic and parent I suppose it makes sense that …

First Suburbs In The Northeast And Midwest: Assets, Challenges, And Opportunities, Robert Puentes Jan 2002

First Suburbs In The Northeast And Midwest: Assets, Challenges, And Opportunities, Robert Puentes

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This article examines the decline of first suburbs, the older inner-ring suburbs closest to cities that grew up before or immediately after World War II. As families leave these areas for the expanding outer suburbs, the tax base shrinks and poverty and failing schools result. Inner suburbs lack the sophisticated governmental structures of cities to combat these problems, and without a shift in investment policies, first suburbs will continue to suffer.

Ethnicity And Unemployment In Finland, Jan Saarela, Fjalar Finnäs Jan 2002

Ethnicity And Unemployment In Finland, Jan Saarela, Fjalar Finnäs

Ethnic Studies Review

This research note provides the general findings from a research project analyzing the reasons behind the lower unemployment rate of the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland, compared with the Finnish-speaking majority. The main conclusion is that the unemployment gap cannot be attributed to ethnic-group differences in age, education, place of residence, or industrial structure. We believe that two latent factors are highly relevant in this context: language proficiency and social integration, although no data presently available provides information about such issues.

The Psychology Of Competence And Informed Consent: Understanding Decision-Making With Regard To Clinical Research, Barry Rosenfeld Jan 2002

The Psychology Of Competence And Informed Consent: Understanding Decision-Making With Regard To Clinical Research, Barry Rosenfeld

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Article examines the importance of patient autonomy and competence in medical decision making and how questions of competence affect informed consent. The author explores three hypothetical cases which "outline the parameters of 'competence' by illustrating the methodologies used in making [determinations of competence], distinguishing between ethical and legal issues in the assessment of competence, and reviewing the procedures for surrogate decision making when competence is deemed impaired." The cases present questions on when to respect patient autonomy and when it may be appropriate to allow a surrogate to take over decision making.

An Empirical Investigation Of Employee Perceptions Of Outsourcing Success Of Information Technology Operations, Lynda Roberson Louis Jan 2002

An Empirical Investigation Of Employee Perceptions Of Outsourcing Success Of Information Technology Operations, Lynda Roberson Louis

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Outsourcing is defined as the contracting out of all or parts of a company's functional work. While most outsourcing initiatives attempt to open a line of communication between upper management and affected employees, little effort is made to assess and incorporate employee perceptions into the outsourcing deal. Little research exists that addresses employee perceptions of outsourcing Information Technology (IT) functions and operations and the effects such outsourcing have on the employee. This study investigated the perceptions of employees directly involved in IT outsourcing deals in an effort to relate these perceptions to factors identified in earlier studies. The following human …

Working Memory In Schizophrenics And Older Adults : A Mediator For Episodic Memory Deficits?, Matthew W. Webster Jan 2002

Working Memory In Schizophrenics And Older Adults : A Mediator For Episodic Memory Deficits?, Matthew W. Webster

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the role of working memory on episodic memory in older adults and adults with schizophrenia. This study included 15 adults with schizophrenia, 20 young adults without psychopathology, and 21 older adults without psychopathology. Storage working memory scores were greater than processing working memory scores in all groups. Young adults had the fewest problems with episodic and working memory, compared to older adults and adults with schizophrenia, who had similar deficits in both memory types. Speed of processing was found to be the greatest predictor of working memory capacity.

The Impact Of The 1918-1919 Influenza Epidemic On Virginia, Stephanie Forrest Barker Jan 2002

The Impact Of The 1918-1919 Influenza Epidemic On Virginia, Stephanie Forrest Barker

Master's Theses

In the fall of 1918 an unparalleled influenza pandemic spread throughout the world. More than a quarter of Americans became ill, and at least 600,000 died. For many Virginians, this was a time of acute crisis that only could be compared to the days of the Civil War. This thesis describes Spanish influenza's impact on Virginia, primarily focusing on the cities of Newport News, Richmond, and Roanoke. It details influenza's emergence in Virginia and explores how state and city officials dealt with this unprecedented epidemic. This study examines how the epidemic disrupted daily routines of life and overwhelmed the state's …

The Design Of Online Learning Communities For Older Adults, Martha Marie Snyder Jan 2002

The Design Of Online Learning Communities For Older Adults, Martha Marie Snyder

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Rapid, ongoing advancements in the growth of the Internet and web-based technology coupled with the steadily increasing number of older adults in our society create a significant need for the design of safe, convenient, and accessible online learning communities for this demographic. The primary goal of this dissertation was to conduct formative research into methodologies for developing a new instructional-design theory for establishing online learning communities for older adults. The aim of this work was to apply formative research, which is a type of developmental research used to create a new design theory or improve an existing theory, to the …

Missoula Ecopaws: Environmental Incentive Program To Combat Environmental Inaction, Jaymie Sanders, Valayna Cannon, Katy Mccumber, Hattie Ransom

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Climate change has had a drastic impact on the planet on a biological, political, and socioeconomic level. The excessive consumption of natural resources and human-induced pollution has contributed to rising temperatures, intensified weather patterns, and an increase in natural disasters (Nations, 2019). This has led to high levels of eco-anxiety and grief in younger generations, driven by psychological factors, misinformation, and governmental resistance to meaningful change which has influenced inaction in individuals (Hickman et al, 2021). In order to address these growing concerns, we have created a rewards program for our campus community to encourage eco-positive behavior. Missoula EcoPaws is …

Positive And Negative Roles Of Cd72 In B Cell Function., Hsin-Jung Wu, Subbarao Bondada Jan 2002

Positive And Negative Roles Of Cd72 In B Cell Function., Hsin-Jung Wu, Subbarao Bondada

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Regulation of B cell activation depends on integration of signals transmitted by the B cell receptor (BCR) and a variety of co-receptors. CD72 is a B cell co-receptor that is expressed in all stages of B cell development except plasma cells. Ligation of CD72 enhances B cell growth and differentiation. Recently, the class IV semaphoring, CD100, has been identified as the natural ligand for CD72. Cytoplasmic domain of CD72 has been shown to be associated with SHP-1 leading to the proposal that the positive effects of CD72 on B cell response may result from sequestration of negative signals from BCR. …

Minor Rights: The Adolescent Abortion Cases, Martin Guggenheim Jan 2002

Minor Rights: The Adolescent Abortion Cases, Martin Guggenheim

Hofstra Law Review

This article focuses on two Supreme Court decisions (Planned Parenthood v. Danforth and Bellotti v. Baird) in which the Court redefined the entire conception of children's rights. The article suggests that the Supreme Court used a construct of children's constitutional "rights" to restrict the rights of children. By doing so, the Court decisively derailed an incipient children's rights movement that had the potential to liberate children from the dominion of adults. In Danforth, the Court considered for the first time the constitutionality of a state statute that contained a mandatory parental consent provision. The Court struck down that part of …
