Home Equity Loans In Texas: Maintaining The Texas Tradition Of Homestead Protection, Julia Patterson Forrester Rogers Jan 2002

Home Equity Loans In Texas: Maintaining The Texas Tradition Of Homestead Protection, Julia Patterson Forrester Rogers

SMU Law Review

This Article examines home equity financing in Texas, focusing on how continued protection of the homestead shelters Texas homeowners from problems experienced by some homeowners in other states. In Part I of the Article, I briefly explore the history of homestead protection and home equity loans in Texas, a subject on which Joe McKnight literally wrote the book. In Part II, I discuss the growth of home equity loans in other states, the reasons for their popularity, and the problems that have arisen for homeowners who have been victimized by predatory lenders. Part III examines the constitutional amendment that ultimately …

Correlations Between Reading Achievement And Discipline Problems Among African-American Male Eighth Grade Students In The Little Rock School District, Deborah J. Price Jan 2002

Correlations Between Reading Achievement And Discipline Problems Among African-American Male Eighth Grade Students In The Little Rock School District, Deborah J. Price

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to add to the body of existing knowledge regarding the relationship between academic achievement and discipline problems found in schools today. The study undertook to determine if there is a correlation between the behavior of African-American male students and their academic achievement. Specifically, it examines their achievement in reading and whether or not these students have experienced serious discipline problems at school. The sample was limited to African-American male students who are in the eighth grade during the 2001-2002 school year. These students must have attended a middle school within the Little Rock School …

The history contains details of the family's life on farms in Dartford and Colville, with some details …

The Soul Of Scholarship: The Relationship Between Academic Achievement And Religious Orientation Of College -Bound High School Seniors, Karmen Petersen Williams Jan 2002

The Soul Of Scholarship: The Relationship Between Academic Achievement And Religious Orientation Of College -Bound High School Seniors, Karmen Petersen Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has suggested a relationship between religiousness and various aspects of physical and mental health; however, an examination of the relationship between religious orientation and academic achievement appears to be an under-explored area of empirical research. The present study investigated the relationship of academic achievement and religious orientation of college-bound high school seniors. The Intrinsic and Extrinsic subscales of Allport's (Allport & Ross, 1967) Religious Orientation Scale and the Quest subscale of Batson's (Batson & Ventis, 1982) Religious Life Inventory were interspersed into a 32-item Likert-style questionnaire. The questionnaire was administered in both large group and small group format …

Exploring Aspects Of Effectiveness Of The Department Chair In Metropolitan Universities, Kathy Cooper Trawick Jan 2002

Exploring Aspects Of Effectiveness Of The Department Chair In Metropolitan Universities, Kathy Cooper Trawick

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the roles and competencies of the effective department chair based on the perceptions of faculty, chairs, and deans at three selected metropolitan universities. A brief look at 54 competencies and tasks taken from eight basic categories were rank-ordered by the participants. Data were obtained via electronic survey and an Internet web site at the researcher's home institution. Results were analyzed using Kendall's W Coefficient of Concordance to determine agreement among the groups in prioritizing the eight basic categories of department chair competencies. Results from the study of 130 total participants indicated there …

Understanding The Conditions That Encourage The Persistence Of Women In Science, Mathematics, And Engineering Career Pathways, Linda C. Kondrick Jan 2002

Understanding The Conditions That Encourage The Persistence Of Women In Science, Mathematics, And Engineering Career Pathways, Linda C. Kondrick

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine which factors encourage the persistence of women in the pursuit of Science, Math, and Engineering (SME) careers. Surveys with 36 parallel pairs of theory and history questions regarding the importance and the aptness of variables identified in the literature were completed by 205 SME career women. The variables covered three educational levels: High School, Undergraduate and Graduate. Results reveal which variables fit the experiences of these women and were also believed by them to be important to women in the pursuit of an SME career goal. False Negatives, women who according to …

Compensation For Victims Of Terror: A Specialized Jurisprudence Of Injury, Marshall S. Shapo Jan 2002

Compensation For Victims Of Terror: A Specialized Jurisprudence Of Injury, Marshall S. Shapo

Hofstra Law Review

The legislation and Rules creating the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (the "Fund") constitute a new entry in the "jurisprudence of injury." The Fund presents challenges that cut across traditional tort and compensation law, economic theory, philosophy, psychology and political science. This article combines analysis of the statute and the Rules with suggestions about their political significance, including brief summaries of heated public discussion about the Fund and a couple of personalized anecdotes, selected for their symbolic power.

Trying to "broker the politics of injury," Congress in establishing the Fund created a "unique form of public choice," with "something for …

The Herbicide Paraquat Causes Up-Regulation And Aggregation Of Α-Synuclein In Mice: Paraquat And Α-Synuclein, Amy B. Manning-Bog, Alison L. Mccormack, Jie Li, Vladimir N. Uversky, Anthony L. Fink, Donato A. Di Monte Jan 2002

The Herbicide Paraquat Causes Up-Regulation And Aggregation Of Α-Synuclein In Mice: Paraquat And Α-Synuclein, Amy B. Manning-Bog, Alison L. Mccormack, Jie Li, Vladimir N. Uversky, Anthony L. Fink, Donato A. Di Monte

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

α-Synuclein-containing aggregates represent a feature of a variety of neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease (PD). However, mechanisms that promote intraneuronal α-synuclein assembly remain poorly understood. Because pesticides, particularly the herbicide paraquat, have been suggested to play a role as PD risk factors, the hypothesis that interactions between α-synuclein and these environmental agents may contribute to aggregate formation was tested in this study. Paraquat markedly accelerated the in vitro rate of α-synuclein fibril formation in a dose-dependent fashion. When mice were exposed to the herbicide, brain levels of α-synuclein were significantly increased. This up-regulation followed a consistent pattern, with higher α-synuclein …

Elucidation Of The Molecular Mechanism During The Early Events In Immunoglobulin Light Chain Amyloid Fibrillation: Evidence For An Off-Pathway Oligomer At Acidic Ph, Pierre O. Souillac, Vladimir N. Uversky, Ian S. Millett, Ritu Khurana, Sebastian Doniach, Anthony L. Fink Jan 2002

Fink

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Light chain amyloidosis involves the systemic pathologic deposition of monoclonal light chain variable domains of immunoglobulins as insoluble fibrils. The variable domain LEN was obtained from a patient who had no overt amyloidosis; however, LEN forms fibrils in vitro, under mildly destabilizing conditions. The in vitro kinetics of fibrillation were investigated using a wide variety of probes. The rate of fibril formation was highly dependent on the initial protein concentration. In contrast to most amyloid systems, the kinetics became slower with increasing LEN concentrations. At high protein concentrations a significant lag in time was observed between the conformational changes …
