Radionuclide Leaching From Residual Soils: Screening Study, Mark W. Fitch, Ellen England Jan 2002

Radionuclide Leaching From Residual Soils: Screening Study, Mark W. Fitch, Ellen England

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Four soil samples, collected from a National Priorities Listed site contaminated with uranium, thorium, and radium, were leached for two, seven, and 30 days. The nonleached soils, leached soils, and leachates were analyzed using gamma spectroscopy, alpha spectroscopy, and delayed neutron activation. Unleached and leached soils had low radionuclide activities, and four different leaching solutions had no significant observable effect upon the resulting leachate activity. Three of the soils produced leachates with uranium activities below the expected primary drinking water standard of 30 µg/L for uranium, but the leachate from the fourth soil had an unacceptably high concentration of uranium …

An Evaluation Of Foster Parents' Attitudes Towards Birth Parents, Deborah C. Browne Jan 2002

An Evaluation Of Foster Parents' Attitudes Towards Birth Parents, Deborah C. Browne

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Although foster care involves many different relationships that have been examined for many years, few researchers have paid attention to the relationship that must inevitably develop between the foster parents and the child's birth parents. Foster parents have, nonetheless, been noted to express negative feelings about the behaviour of the foster child's natural family. This may have negative effects on the development of the child's self esteem and on the outcome of the entire placement. The current paper illustrates how the foster parents of 127 placements in Cork city described the birth parents of their foster children. Although 38% of …

Profitability Determinants In South Dakota's Beef Cow/Calf Enterprise, Amy N. Singrey Jan 2002

Profitability Determinants In South Dakota's Beef Cow/Calf Enterprise, Amy N. Singrey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota beef cow/calf producers who had completed a 2000 Standardized Performance Analysis were surveyed and interviewed to gain a better understanding of what personal characteristics and management factors may help determine profitability. Low, medium and high profitability categories were defined by calculating one standard deviation above or below a mean ROA. Producers were unaware of their profitability category at the time of the interview. Statistically significant differences were found in reference to the involvement of the operator in physical labor and management functions, and in the percentage of other family members involved in the management functions in the enterprise. …

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

The central focus of this study was to examine how individual difference factors could be used to explain various levels of consumer support for a specific sport property. The present study extends the Sport Interest Inventory (SII) in order to enhance current understanding of consumer motives in relation to sport in general and women's competitive sport in particular. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the 12-item Sport Interest Inventory, measuring 14 individual difference factors related to spectator interest in soccer. Multiple Linear regression analysis revealed that five motivational characteristic--(a) sport interest, (b) team interest, (c) vicarious achievement, (d) role modeling, and (e) …

Vo2 Reserve And The Minimal Intensity For Improving Cardiorespiratory Fitness, David P. Swain, Barry A. Franklin

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

Purpose: The American College of Sports Medicine has stated that aerobic: training needs to occur at a minimum threshold intensity of 50% VO2max for most healthy adults and at 40% VO2max for those with a very low initial fitness. Recently, the concept of VO2 reserve (% VO2R, i.e., a percentage of the difference between maximum and resting VO2 has been introduced for prescribing exercise intensity, This analysis was designed to determine the threshold intensity for improving cardiorespiratory fitness expressed as %VO2R units. Methods: Previous studies in healthy subjects (N = 18) that …

Browning Oil Co. V. Luecke: Has Texas Illuminated A Dark Distinction Between Vertical And Horizontal Drilling., Stephen Taylor Dennis

St. Mary's Law Journal

Horizontal drilling technology continues to revitalize the oil and gas industry, however, many of the legal concepts governing oil and gas law have failed to keep pace. Recently, in Browning Oil Co. v. Luecke, the Third Court of Appeals of Texas dealt with the issue of whether an antidilution clause applied to both horizontal and vertical wells. The agreement between the parties did not contemplate the use of horizontal technology, however, the express language did not exclude horizontal technology. Because the agreement did not expressly exclude horizontal drilling, the court looked at the intent of the parties and ruled that …

Suing The Insecure?: A Duty Of Care In Cyberspace, Stephen E. Henderson, Matthew Yarbrough

Faculty Articles

The Internet, already of major significance throughout much of the globe, is expected to become increasingly pervasive in diverse arenas, from health care, to commerce, to entertainment, and is expected to become increasingly critical to essential infrastructures, including banking, power, and telecommunications. Yet the medium is both inherently and unnecessarily insecure. In particular, today’s Internet can be crippled by distributed denial-of-service attacks launched by relatively unsophisticated and judgment-proof parties. Not every computing system involved in such attacks, however, is necessarily without resources. Application of traditional negligence liability, coupled with other government incentives and support institutions, will encourage better security and …

Wild Plant Classification In Little Dixie : Variation In A Regional Culture, Justin M. Nolan Jan 2002

Wild Plant Classification In Little Dixie : Variation In A Regional Culture, Justin M. Nolan

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This study examines the relation between folk expertise and wild plant classification in Little Dixie, a seven-county vernacular cultural region in central Missouri. A successive pile-sort task was administered to ten local wild plant "experts" and ten "novices" of Euro-American descent to investigate how ethnobotanical knowledge influences the cognitive construction of folk taxonomies. The results indicate that experts categorize plants according to utilitarian features (e.g., edibility, medicinal value) and morphology (e.g., herbs, trees) while novices rely almost exclusively on morphological traits. While the classification strategies of experts and novices are substantially different, a single categorization system is common to both …

An Empirical Exploration Of Bus Travel Times And Dwell Times In A Highly Competitive Exclusive Busway, Daniel A. Rodriguez, Arturo Ardila Jan 2002

An Empirical Exploration Of Bus Travel Times And Dwell Times In A Highly Competitive Exclusive Busway, Daniel A. Rodriguez, Arturo Ardila

Journal of Public Transportation

Busway transit has reemerged as a cost-effective transportation alternative for providing urban mobility. This article examines the operational characteristics of an exclusive busway svstem with high passenger ridership and subject to the competitive forces of individual operators. Results of a running time model suggest that the increase in running time associated with an additional passenger movement is low but that the delay imposed by recurrent vehicle deceleration and acceleration related to frequent stops is high. Frequent vehicle stops reduce fuel efficiency, increase pollution, reduce travel time, and decrease productivity. Results of several specifications of dwell-time regression models indicate that established …

Changing Tides And Changing Focus: Mapping The Challenges And Successes Of One State's Implementation Of The Adoption And Safe Families Act Of 1997, Scottye J. Cash, Scott D. Ryan, Alison Glover

Journal of Family Strengths

In 1997, the Adoption and Safe Families Act shifted from the preservation of families to an emphasis on safety, permanency, and well-being through expediting the termination of parental rights, establishing exceptions to the reasonable efforts clause of preserving the family, and fiscal incentives for finalizing adoptions. The current project assessed the role of a full service array in achieving the outcomes set forth in ASF A. Concept mapping was utilized to elicit information from participants (both urban and rural) regarding the identified research question. Participants recognized family preservation versus safety, community connections, mandates versus reality, and worker recruitment and retention …
