Using Evaluations To Break Down The Male Corporate Hierarchy: A Full Circle Approach, Edward Adams

Articles

This Article explores full circle evaluations in detail, arguing that corporate boards should implement such systems. Part I details full circle evaluations and explains the benefits associated with the use of such systems. Part II describes the potential legal duty to implement full circle evaluation systems. Part III argues that full circle evaluations consider the input of all persons in the corporation, thereby increasing the extent to which decisions concerning promotions are based on objective factors of merit and facilitating the advancement of women in the workplace. Part IV concludes that in light of all of the aforementioned considerations, the …

Recent Advances In Biological Weapons Detection, Lore Patton-Fehrman

Honors Capstones

The events at the end of2001 have made the threat from biological weapons a critical issue and a matter for public concern and safety. The detection and identification of a biological weapon with a portable device in a rapid and sensitive manner could mean the difference between a localized outbreak or an epidemic or even a pandemic. A review of recent technological articles was conducted for an overview of advances in the field of biological weapon detection. Three main branches of research were covered: methods detecting DNA/RNA, antibody based methods, and cell or tissue based methods. Most of the researched …

Skin Cancer Screening Program And Analysis, Jerwana A. Laster

Honors Capstones

Skin cancer is the most common and the most preventable form of cancer. Nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation, while melanoma is associated with intense episodes of ultraviolet exposure resulting in sunburns. Numerous risk factors are associated with the development of skin cancer. These include exposure to ultraviolet radiation; phenotypic factors such as skin type, eye and hair color, tendency to bum and tan and having freckles and moles; a personal or family history of skin cancer; and occupational sun exposure. Primary prevention behaviors include applying SPF 15+ sunscreen 30 minutes before exposure, reapplying SPF …

The Consequences Of Cranial-Facial Anomalies, Elissa Marie Andalina Jan 2002

The Consequences Of Cranial-Facial Anomalies, Elissa Marie Andalina

Honors Capstones

Everyday communication is essential. Not being able to communicate efficiently can pose many threats to a person with a communicative disorder. Throughout the process of my literature review, I have come to realize that the world of the speech-language pathologist is one of heterogeneity, and one must be able to expect the unexpected. As a future speech-language pathologist, I will be working with adults and children from diverse cultural backgrounds. To add to me knowledge as an undergraduate, I chose to research the topic of cranial-facial anomalies, because of my deep-rooted interest in helping children and adults. I chose to …

The focus of this paper will be providing a brief history of autism, diagnosing autism, and comparing and contrasting four intervention models which include: Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH), Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Sensory Integration therapy (SI therapy), and Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) TEACCH is an approach that "requires adaptations that must occur in three major areas of the child's life: home, school, and community. Starting with a comprehensive assessment, the approach comprises a number of interconnected elements, which are …

Boys' Aggression And Violence : A Lack Of Emotional Awareness, Samantha Lynn Flippin Jan 2002

Boys' Aggression And Violence : A Lack Of Emotional Awareness, Samantha Lynn Flippin

Honors Capstones

As boys enter into the beginning years of adolescence, they begin a journey into a completely different world. The onset of puberty results in physical and cognitive changes that are often unexpected and challenging. As the biological changes begin, adolescents transition into middle school, with more expectations and responsibilities from the adults in their lives. Unfortunately for boys, there are no outlets for all the frustration, fear, embarrassment, anger, or other intense emotions caused by these transitions. The purpose of this essay is to suggest a new way to examine the aggression and violence of boys. I propose that boys …

The Washington Equal Access To Justice Act: A Substantial Proposal For Reform, D. Greg Blankinship Jan 2002

The Washington Equal Access To Justice Act: A Substantial Proposal For Reform, D. Greg Blankinship

Washington Law Review

Under the Washington Administrative Procedures Act, a party can challenge an agency action in superior court. The Washington Legislature adopted the Equal Access to Justice Act, which provides fees to qualified parties that prevail in judicial reviews of agency actions, to encourage individuals and small businesses to oppose unjust agency actions. The effectiveness of this fee-shifting provision is significantly limited because awards are not authorized when a court decides that the agency action is substantially justified. The legislature should remove this limitation. Where the agency action involves factual determinations or the interpretation of statutes or regulations within the expertise of …

Stability And Optimization Of Photoconductivity In Thermally Vacuum Evaporated Indium (Iii) Sulfide Thin Films, Gustavo Rehder, Robert Engelken, Randy Stidham, Richard Tanner, Lee Ketchum, Anil Baral Jan 2002

Stability And Optimization Of Photoconductivity In Thermally Vacuum Evaporated Indium (Iii) Sulfide Thin Films, Gustavo Rehder, Robert Engelken, Randy Stidham, Richard Tanner, Lee Ketchum, Anil Baral

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Long term stability of photosensitivity versus time in indium (III) sulfide thin films thermally vacuum evaporated onto photocell-patterned printed circuit boards varies sensitively with several factors including contact metal type, contact metal diffusion and electromigration into the semiconductor, doping, and encapsulation method. Because of the significant photoconductivity and relative low toxicity and environmental impact of this compound semiconductor, it is important to better characterize these dependences toward commercial applications. We will report on measurements of photoconductivity vs. time as functions of such factors and evolving methods to stabilize this photoconductivity.

The Virtue Of Civility In The Practice Of Politics (Chapter Three Of The Virtue Of Civility In The Practice Of Politics), Philip D. Smith Jan 2002

The Virtue Of Civility In The Practice Of Politics (Chapter Three Of The Virtue Of Civility In The Practice Of Politics), Philip D. Smith

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "This chapter has more than one goal. First, I want to introduce readers to the apparatus of practices, institutions and virtues (PIV) that helps us understand what virtues are. Second, I want to explore the notion of politics a little, to see what its main problem is. (I will claim, perhaps surprisingly, that business management is largely a variation of politics.) Third, I want to reintroduce civility and suggest that it is an important contributor to solving the political problem (and problems of management).

Throughout this chapter, I will emphasize process. As we shall see, process is integrated in …

Level Set Segmentation Of Mr Images For Extraction Of Femur Bone And Tissues, Christina Shanti Nayagam Jan 2002

Level Set Segmentation Of Mr Images For Extraction Of Femur Bone And Tissues, Christina Shanti Nayagam

Student Works (2000-2009)

This research explores a potentially useful segmentation algorithm, known as the level set method. It is suitable for images obtained from the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRJ) modality, despite the fact that MR images have low contrast between bone and tissue. The level set method is a numerical technique designed to track the evolution of an interface. The fast marching version of the method is implemented for two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) segmentation in this research. Femur segmentation is the main thrust of this thesis, however brain and heart images are also presented. Pre-processing steps are first performed for the 2-0 …

An Evaluation Of Relationship Marketing And Customer Retention Practices In The Hotel Industry, Lisa Kenny Jan 2002

An Evaluation Of Relationship Marketing And Customer Retention Practices In The Hotel Industry, Lisa Kenny

Theses

Customer relationships have received considerable attention from both academics and practitioners. It is accepted that relationship marketing is keeping, not just getting customers, (Berry, 1983). However, it has been criticised that firms frequently focus on attracting customers (the “first act”) but then pay little attention to what they should do to keep them (the “second act”) (Berry and Parasuraman, 1991). It has been demonstrated that it is far less expensive to retain a customer than to acquire a new one. The increasing emphasis of relationship marketing is based on the assumptions that building committed customer relationships results in guest satisfaction, …
