Vocs, Pesticides, Nitrate, And Their Mixtures In Groundwater Used For Drinking Water In The United States, Paul Squillace, Jonathon Scott, Michael Moran, B. T. Nolan, Dana Kolpin

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Samples of untreated groundwater from 1255 domestic drinking-water wells and 242 public supply wells were analyzed as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment Program of the U.S. Geological Survey between 1992 and 1999. Wells were sampled to define the regional quality of the groundwater resource and, thus, were distributed geographically across large aquifers, primarily in rural areas. For each sample, as many as 60 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), 83 pesticides, and nitrate were analyzed. On the basis of previous studies, nitrate concentrations as nitrogen ≥3 mg/L were considered to have an anthropogenic origin. VOCs were detected more frequently (44%) than …

Pharmaceuticals, Hormones, And Other Organic Wastewater Contaminants In U.S. Streams, 1999-2000: A National Reconnaissance, Dana Kolpin, Edward Furlong, Michael Meyer, E. Michael Thurman, Steven Zaugg, Larry Barber, Herbert Buxton Jan 2002

Pharmaceuticals, Hormones, And Other Organic Wastewater Contaminants In U.S. Streams, 1999-2000: A National Reconnaissance, Dana Kolpin, Edward Furlong, Michael Meyer, E. Michael Thurman, Steven Zaugg, Larry Barber, Herbert Buxton

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

To provide the first nationwide reconnaissance of the occurrence of pharmaceuticals, hormones, and other organic wastewater contaminants (OWCs) in water resources, the U.S. Geological Survey used five newly developed analytical methods to measure concentrations of 95 OWCs in water samples from a network of 139 streams across 30 states during 1999 and 2000. The selection of sampling sites was biased toward streams susceptible to contamination (i.e. downstream of intense urbanization and livestock production). OWCs were prevalent during this study, being found in 80% of the streams sampled. The compounds detected represent a wide range of residential, industrial, and agricultural origins …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Research was conducted during 1996–2000 to develop baits for delivering an oral rabies vaccine to raccoons (Procyon lotor) and coyotes (Canis latrans). A bait was sought that: (1) was attractive to the target species, (2) could be distributed by aircraft, (3) was as effective (or more so) than the currently used fish meal polymer bait, and (4) could be produced in large numbers by automated procedures and could be purchased by user groups at substantially lower cost.

Ten field trials were conducted to document raccoons’ bait flavor preferences, evaluate a new vaccine sachet bait coated with …

The Crucible Of Flight, Adrian Kinnane Jan 2002

The Crucible Of Flight, Adrian Kinnane

Local and Rare Books

Adrian Kinnane’s unpublished manuscript “The Crucible of Flight” is an in depth look at what outside influences helped the Wright Brothers become the first to be successful in the quest for flight. Kinnane considers that the difference between them and their competitor/colleagues may well have been the difference that crowned them ultimately with success. His main focus is the familial and personal forces that set the Wrights apart. He studies the Wright family bond, the friendly and adversarial ties the Wrights developed outside the family bond, and the fraternal bond between Orville and Wilbur Wright.

Bio-Ethics And Physician Liability: The Liability Effects Of Developing Pain Management Standards, Steven E. Stark Jan 2002

Bio-Ethics And Physician Liability: The Liability Effects Of Developing Pain Management Standards, Steven E. Stark

St. Thomas Law Review

As the legal and regulatory environment related to health law becomes more complex, a health care provider's exposure to potential civil liability claims from patients and their families, possible disciplinary charges from regulatory agencies, and state and federal criminal charges has expanded as well. It is often stated that the law is intended to define and enforce legal duties, not moral or ethical obligations. Nevertheless, bioethical debates help shape the development of accepted professional standards which, if violated, often form the basis for imposition of civil, criminal, and administrative penalties. Developing ethical debates result in "prevailing professional standards" that lead …

Charles Dickens' Bleak House: Mr. Tulkinghorn As A Successful Literary Lawyer, Maureen E. Markey Jan 2002

Charles Dickens' Bleak House: Mr. Tulkinghorn As A Successful Literary Lawyer, Maureen E. Markey

St. Thomas Law Review

After a short summary of the story of Bleak House, this Article analyzes the character of Mr. Tulkinghorn as a "successful literary lawyer" according to the criteria described by Richard Weisberg in his book Poethics. This Article concludes that, although Mr. Tulkinghom may be considered "successful" in one sense of the word-he is powerful, he achieves his goals, he makes money-he is an abject failure from an ethical, moral, humanistic, or any other perspective. Mr. Tulkinghorn's behavior simply cannot and should not be justified under ethical norms. This Article challenges attempts by lawyers to do so, as providing ammunition for …

Begging The Court's Pardon: Justice Denied For The Poorest Of The Poor, Daniel M. Cohen Jan 2002

Begging The Court's Pardon: Justice Denied For The Poorest Of The Poor, Daniel M. Cohen

St. Thomas Law Review

Astonishing as it may seem, if Benjamin Franklin were alive today, and he sought to collect alms for the poor on Fort Lauderdale Beach, he would, by force of law, find himself summarily expelled from the area. If Mr. Franklin then returned, seeking thus to heed the call of his conscience to help the downtrodden and oppressed, the great statesman and Founding Father of the United States would find himself placed under arrest. For the City of Fort Lauderdale, with the imprimatur of the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeal, has deemed it Right and Good that soliciting a passerby for …

The People Drunk Or The People Sober - Direct Democracy Meets The Supreme Court Of Florida, Thomas Rutherford Jan 2002

The People Drunk Or The People Sober - Direct Democracy Meets The Supreme Court Of Florida, Thomas Rutherford

St. Thomas Law Review

In 1999 opponents of race and gender preferences in public education, public employment, and public contracting submitted to the Florida Secretary of State four petitions to end those practices in Florida. The sponsors, styling themselves as the Florida Civil Rights Initiative ("FCRI"), were led by businessman and University of California Regent Ward Connerly. The petitions were filed under the authority of Article XI, Section 3, of the Florida Constitution, which authorizes the direct proposal of constitutional amendments by the people. They were closely patterned after successful initiatives in California and Washington, where Connerly had been instrumental in securing adoption. Addressing …
