Examining The "Skin Trade" : A Cultural And Juridical Analysis Of The Internet's Perpetuation Of The Sex Tourism Industry, Janelle Sanders Jan 2002

Examining The "Skin Trade" : A Cultural And Juridical Analysis Of The Internet's Perpetuation Of The Sex Tourism Industry, Janelle Sanders

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Sex trafficking of women is projected to take over as the leading international crime activity, surpassing drugs and weapons. Trade in human beings is a high-profit and low-risk venture that is reinforced by a blatant lack of law enforcement and governmental interest. Trafficking continues to exist because societies and cultures continue to marginalize, objectify, and accept abuse against women. Whether women choose or are forced into sex trafficking, they find it almost impossible to get out of the sex industry once they have been trafficked. The women face abuse, isolation, lack of sustenance, violence, and no freedom. Sex tourism developed …

A Protocol For Mpa Data Collection And Comparison : Case Studies In Temperate And Tropical Oceans, Marnie Meyer

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Habitat degradation and depleting fisheries are a significant problem in today's oceans. Human impacts such as overfishing, destructive fishing practices, pollution and recreation have contributed to unhealthy marine ecosystems. These marine ecosystems are of great importance historically, biologically, and economically. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) have been established to protect marine biodiversity, conduct scientific research and education, promote natural and cultural resources within a certain area, and reduce user conflict among stakeholders. In this paper, seven MPAs located throughout the world in temperate and tropical oceans are researched. A template spreadsheet was created for each MPA that provides detailed information including …

A Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Trichloroethylene Contamination In The Aquifers Under The Former Fort Ord Landfill, Kristy J. Meyer Jan 2002

A Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Trichloroethylene Contamination In The Aquifers Under The Former Fort Ord Landfill, Kristy J. Meyer

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a volatile organic compound the U.S. Army used extensively on the former Fort Ord prior to the post's closure. TCE is a probable human carcinogen and can cause a range of health effects depending on the quantity and duration of exposure. Fort Ord operated a group of landfills located on the post. The Army used these landfills for disposal of TCE-containing waste, and TCE subsequently leached into and contaminated the A-, 180-foot (Upper), and 180-foot restricted (Lower) aquifers. My project goals were to compile relevant information on the landfill and trichloroethylene, determine where the areas of highest …

Finding Potential Linkages Between Age, Severity, And Water Stress In Pitch Canker, Fussarium Circinatum, Infested Monterey Pines In Asilomar State Park, Monterey, California, Dave Contreras

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Pitch Canker, Fusarium circinatum, is a disease that affects pines. Particularly of importance in California is the endemic Monterey Pine, Pinus radiata. One aspect of the study was to determine if there is a relationship between age and severity levels on pitch canker infested Monterey Pines corresponding to water stress. The other focus of the study was to see how age is affected by pitch canker, as associated by severity level. Monterey Pine survey data from 2000-2001 was collected by Asilomar State Park ecologists and used to determine pitch canker presence and water stress samples were obtained. No statistically significant …

A Multivariate Analysis Of The Human Development Index, Basudeb Biswas, Frank Caliendo Jan 2002

A Multivariate Analysis Of The Human Development Index, Basudeb Biswas, Frank Caliendo

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

A multivariate technique called principal component analysis is used to combine measures of human development. The first principal component index is the linear combination of component indexes with maximal information content. This multivariate technique accounts for differences in the variances of component indexes as well as interdependence among the component indexes. The first principal component of the three indexes used in the HDI (life expectancy, education, GDP) yields rankings nearly identical to the HDI itself. We interpret this as theoretical support for the HDI ranking system as a Inetric of international hUlnan development.

The Effects Of Economic Growth And Public Support Of Health Services On Longevity--A Panel Data Analysis, Basudeb Biswas Jan 2002

The Effects Of Economic Growth And Public Support Of Health Services On Longevity--A Panel Data Analysis, Basudeb Biswas

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

It is now recognized that the growth rate of per capita real income is not the only indicator of development. Development is a multidilnensional concept that focuses on development ofhuman beings through removal of poverty, ill health, illiteracy, and other social deprivations. The observed positive correlation between the growth of GNP per head and the average quality of life may not be as strong as it appears to be. It is argued that the causal relation between income and life expectancy, which is taken as a proxy for the index of quality of life works mainly through the impact of …

An Efficient Mechanism To Control Correlated Externalities: Redistributive Transfers And The Coexistence Of Regional And Global Pollution Permit Markets, Arthur J. Kaplan, Emilson C.D. Silva Jan 2002

An Efficient Mechanism To Control Correlated Externalities: Redistributive Transfers And The Coexistence Of Regional And Global Pollution Permit Markets, Arthur J. Kaplan, Emilson C.D. Silva

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

We compare tradable permit markets and emission taxes as self-enforcing mechanisms to control correlated externality problems. By "correlated" we mean multiple pollutants that are jointly produced by a single source but which simultaneously cause differentiated regional and global externalities (e.g., smog and global warming). By "self-enforcing" we mean mechanisms that account for the endogeneity that exists between competing jurisdictions in the setting of environmental policy within a federation of regions. We find that joint domestic and international permit markets are Pareto efficient, while joint emissions taxes are not.

The Right Of Refuse: A Call For Adequate Protection Of A Pharmacist's Right To Refuse Facilitation Of Abortion And Emergency Contraception, Donald W. Herbe

Journal of Law and Health

The purpose of this Note is not to argue for or against either the pro-life or pro-choice positions. The purpose of this Note is to shed light on a serious moral dilemma that faces many pharmacists today, to call for universal acceptance in the pharmacy profession of a right of conscience, and to suggest adequate state and national legislative measures that would protect and prevent pharmacists from having to act contrary to their basic moral convictions. Section I provides background regarding present day abortive and contraceptive drug therapies and the role of the pharmacist in providing such medications. Section II …

Using Aquatic Invertebrates To Delineate Seasonal And Temporary Wetlands In The Prairie Pothole Region Of North America, Ned H. Euliss Jr., David M. Mushet, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 2002

Using Aquatic Invertebrates To Delineate Seasonal And Temporary Wetlands In The Prairie Pothole Region Of North America, Ned H. Euliss Jr., David M. Mushet, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Tillage can destroy or greatly disturb indicators of hydric soils and hydrophytic vegetation, making delineation of tilled wetlands difficult. The remains of aquatic invertebrates (e.g., shells, drought-resistant eggs, and trichopteran cases) are easily identifiable and persist in wetland substrates even when wetlands are dry. Additionally, these remains are not easily destroyed by mechanical tillage. To test the feasibility of using invertebrate remains to delineate wetlands, we used two methods to identify the wetland edge of ten seasonal and ten temporary wetlands, evenly divided between grassland and cropland landscapes. First, we identified the wetland edge using hydric soil and vegetation indicators …

Floristic Quality Assessment Of One Natural And Three Restored Wetland Complexities In North Dakota, Usa, David M. Mushet, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Terry L. Shaffer Jan 2002

Floristic Quality Assessment Of One Natural And Three Restored Wetland Complexities In North Dakota, Usa, David M. Mushet, Ned H. Euliss Jr., Terry L. Shaffer

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Floristic quality assessment is potentially an important tool for conservation efforts in the northern Great Plains of North America, but it has received little rigorous evaluation. Floristic quality assessments rely on coefficients assigned to each plant species of a region’s flora based on the conservatism of each species relative to others in the region. These ‘‘coefficients of conservatism’’ (C values) are assigned by a panel of experts familiar with a region’s flora. The floristic quality assessment method has faced some criticism due to the subjective nature of these assignments. To evaluate the effect of this subjectivity on floristic quality assessments, …

Short Report: Therapeutic Efficacy Of Chloroquine Combined With Primaquine Against Plasmodium Falciparum In Northeastern Papua, Indonesia, J. Kevin Baird, Iwa Waidy, Awalludin Sutanihardja, Suradi, Purnomo, Hasan Basri, Sekartuti, Ester Ayomi, David J. Fryauff, Stephen L. Hoffman Jan 2002

United States Navy: Publications

Chloroquine combined with primaquine was evaluated for therapy of uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum in nonimmune Javanese migrants to northeastern Papua, Indonesia. Subjects were randomized to treatment with standard chloroquine therapy (25 mg/kg in 3 doses over the course of 48 hours) with 30 mg primaquine administered daily for 28 days (n = 25) or a placebo of primaquine (n = 28). The 14-day cumulative incidence of therapeutic failure was 56% with primaquine and 79% with placebo (odds ratio [OR], 0.35; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.1–1.3; P = 0.08). Primaquine administered daily created a marginally significant improvement in therapeutic …

Bangs, Robert Gramzinski, Hasan Basri, Priyanto Sismadi, Gerri B. Miller, Jeffrey D. Chulay, David J. Fryauff, Stephen L. Hoffman, J. Kevin Baird

United States Navy: Publications

Thirty-eight of 295 subjects participating in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of the efficacy of daily administration of atovaquone/proguanil for malaria prevention developed malaria at some time during the 20-week prophylaxis period. These subjects (3 atovaquone/proguanil recipients and 35 placebo recipients) were treated with 4 tablets of atovaquone/proguanil per day for 3 days. Atovaquone/proguanil provided safe, well-tolerated, and effective therapy for uncomplicated malaria in nonimmune Indonesians.

United States Navy: Publications

Oral chloroquine is the treatment of choice for uncomplicated Plasmodium malariae infections worldwide. We did a prospective 28-day in-vivo assessment of the efficacy of chloroquine for treatment of P. malariae on Legundi Island in Lampung Bay, Sumatra, Indonesia. Of 28 patients, one had recurrent parasitaemia on day 28, and two had persistent parasitaemia to day 8. Whole-blood chloroquine and desethylchloroquine concentrations were at ordinarily effective levels (≥100 μg/L) on day 8 in both cases of persistent parasitaemia. These findings suggest that clinical resistance to chloroquine by P. malariae occurs in the Indonesian archipelago of southeast Asia.
