The Impact Of Burnout On Human Physiology And On Operational Performance: A Prospective Study Of Soldiers Enrolled In The Combat Diver Qualification Course, Charles A. Morgan Iii, Tracey Cho, Gary Hazlett, Vladimir Coric, Jeff Morgan

National Security Faculty Publications

(from p. 201) "If little is known about the pathophysiology of burnout, even less is known about the actual impact of burnout on military operational performance. This is due to a lack of studies focused on military performance. Whether or not soldiers may feel symptoms of burnout is one thing - whether this state actually affects how they do their job is another. Within the current environment (reduced forces, increased training rates, increased deployment rates, extended tours) we believe that military personnel may be at significant risk for the development of burnout. Further, we wondered if there was a demonstrable …

Effectiveness Of A Relaxation Technique To Decrease The Memory And Behavior Problems Of Alzheimer's Patients, Stella Maris Verna Jan 2002

Effectiveness Of A Relaxation Technique To Decrease The Memory And Behavior Problems Of Alzheimer's Patients, Stella Maris Verna

Frank Dilley Award for Outstanding Doctoral Study

This study explored the effects of instruction in a relaxation technique on patients diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD). The two-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was implemented with 34 pairs of AD patients and caregivers in a group setting. It was hypothesized that treatment patients, compared with controls, would show (a) increased mental functioning, measured by their scores on the Annotated Mini-Mental State Examination (AMMSE) (Folstein, Folstein, & McHugh, 1975); and (b) decreased memory and behavior problems, measured by caregivers' scores on the memory and Behavior Problems Checklist (MBPC) (Zarit, Orr, & Zarit, 1985). Treatment subjects were instructed in …

The Effects Of A Direct Instruction Versus A Non-Direct Instruction Classroom Environment On Behavior Patterns At The Middle School Level, Pamela D. Davis

Theses & Honors Papers

The purpose of this research was to complete an historical comparison of behavior patterns exhibited by students at a small rural middle school in Southside, Virginia during the 2000-2001, and the current 2001-2002 academic years. In addition, the research includes components of the effects of a non-direct instruction classroom versus a direct instruction classroom environment on such behavior patterns. All students' discipline records in grades 6 through 8 were evaluated for the study. The numbers of referrals written on individual students were considered in addition to the types of referrals written.

Equal Pay, Comparable Worth And The Wage Gap : From Rosie The Riveter To The Presen, Aimee Edwards-Altadonna Jan 2002

Equal Pay, Comparable Worth And The Wage Gap : From Rosie The Riveter To The Presen, Aimee Edwards-Altadonna

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The major question that I will attempt to answer is: Equal Pay and Comparable Worth, what does it all mean for women and the wage gap? I want to take the legalese and distill down to its fundamental basics and then convey what it means for women. How do these laws affect women, and what led to the laws being enacted? How did the Rosies' play a part in the equal pay laws? How did women organize themselves to ensure a positive change for all women? Also I want to take the whole process one step further and make it …

Beyond "Pesticides And Beyond" : The Partnership Of Creative Writing And Service Learning In Engendering And Perpetuating Social Activism, Paul David Tuff Jan 2002

Beyond "Pesticides And Beyond" : The Partnership Of Creative Writing And Service Learning In Engendering And Perpetuating Social Activism, Paul David Tuff

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This paper examines how the partnering of service learning with creative writing produces and perpetuates social activism, especially with regard to farmworkers. First, I use a personal narrative to explain how our experiences influence the way we think about--or ignore--farmworkers and their struggles. I then discuss preparations made by my classmates and I from the fall 2001 432S course, "Pesticides and Beyond: The Enduring Legacy," before placement at service learning sites. These preparations included: classroom discussions of the historical, cultural, political, and ideological foundations of farmworker struggles; analyses of how power, privilege, and prejudice oppress farmworkers in America; and research …

Academic Advising Strategies For The At-Risk Student, Angie K. Tudor Jan 2002

Academic Advising Strategies For The At-Risk Student, Angie K. Tudor

Graduate Research Papers

"They often come to class without a pen or paper, put off buying a textbook, do not complete initial assignments, become erratic in attendance, and one day, they simply disappear" (Rouche, 1993, p.37). This description of an at-risk student was provided by a faculty member expressing concern over the plight of this unique category of students in higher education. At-risk students are students who, through no fault of their own, have been denied some of the advantages granted to the majority of college students. "These advantages include growing up in a loving, supportive family, having adequate financial resources, or having …

In For A Calf Is Not Always In For A Cow: An Analysis Of The Constitutional Right Of Anonymity As Applied To Anonymous E-Commerce, Sharon K. Sandeen Jan 2002

In For A Calf Is Not Always In For A Cow: An Analysis Of The Constitutional Right Of Anonymity As Applied To Anonymous E-Commerce, Sharon K. Sandeen

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The ability of Internet users to be anonymous is often touted as one of the benefits of the Internet. It is argued that anonymity on the Internet should be protected because it enhances the free exchange of ideas and helps preserve individual privacy. But anonymous on-line communications have an obvious darkside. Anonymous Internet messages and advertisements increase the potential for fraud by making it difficult, if not impossible, for the true identities of communicants to be traced. This article explores the tension that exists between efforts to regulate anonymous Internet communications and the free speech principles of the First Amendment. …

Poor Rural Neighborhoods And Early School Achievement, Teresa R. Eagle, Robert Bickel, Cynthia Smith Jan 2002

Poor Rural Neighborhoods And Early School Achievement, Teresa R. Eagle, Robert Bickel, Cynthia Smith

Leadership Studies Faculty Research

School consolidation and the search for economies of scale are threatening to render the neighborhood school obsolete. Nevertheless, students and their families do live in neighborhoods. Consequently, education researchers have asked if there are neighborhood-based advantages and disadvantages which influence student achievement. Research has yielded conflicting results. This may be due to failure to properly define and measure neighborhood, acknowledging variation in its nature from place to place. We use ethnographic material to help operationalize the concept neighborhood for use in quantitative research on two very poor, rural counties in West Virginia. We then do a contextual analysis to gauge …

Attachment Disorders And Personality Disorders : A Possible Connection, Jen Sacora Jan 2002

Attachment Disorders And Personality Disorders : A Possible Connection, Jen Sacora

Graduate Research Papers

Researchers now propose that attachment theory can be applied beyond childhood. They believe attachment exists in adulthood and influences adult relationships. Possible connections between personality disorders and well-known approaches to personality development such as attachment theory have been made (Brennan & Shaver, 1998).

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships between parent-infant attachment which influence adult relationships and psychopathology. Theories of personality development as they relate to attachment will be explored as well as influence of early childhood experiences on personality. Finally, possible connections between attachment disorders and personality disorders will be speculated.

Discontinuities And Continuities: A New Way To Understand Virtual Work, Mary Beth Watson-Manheim, Kevin Crowston, Katherine M. Chudoba Jan 2002

Discontinuities And Continuities: A New Way To Understand Virtual Work, Mary Beth Watson-Manheim, Kevin Crowston, Katherine M. Chudoba

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

“Virtual” is a potent buzzword, freely applied to many situations, with many meanings. In this exploratory study, we develop a more precise understanding of "virtual" to describe changing work environments. Specifically, we propose a framework to classify work environments based on the type of discontinuities involved. Discontinuities are gaps or a lack of coherence in aspects of work. The framework allows us to compare research across different topics and work settings. We use the framework to classify 75 published articles on virtual work environments or earlier, related research streams. We observed that many studies were simultaneously addressing existing or emerging …
