Firm-Based Training For Young Australians : Changes From The 1980s To The 1990s, Michael Long, Stephen Lamb

LSAY Research Reports

This report examines changes in the extent, pattern and outcomes of participation in firm-based education and training by young Australians. It compares results for the mid-1990s from the Australian Youth Survey (AYS) with the already- published results for the mid-1980s from the Australian Longitudinal Survey (ALS). The decade between these two surveys witnessed substantial policy initiatives intended to lift the quantity and quality of training experienced by Australian workers. This research report draws on the most comprehensive available data to analyse the changes in training experienced by young workers over that time. The key findings which are examined in the …

Labor Scheduling With Employee Turnover And Absenteeism, Fred F. Easton, John C. Goodale Jan 2002

Labor Scheduling With Employee Turnover And Absenteeism, Fred F. Easton, John C. Goodale

Management - All Scholarship

Most labor staffing and scheduling models presume that all employees scheduled for duty reliably report for work at the beginning of their shift. For industries with even moderate turnover or absenteeism, this assumption may be quite costly. We present a profit-oriented labor scheduling model that accounts for the day-to-day flux of employees and capacity induced by voluntary resignations, new hires, experience curves, and absenteeism. The proposed model also anticipates revenue losses due to reneging by customers whose patience decays exponentially with queue time. Our computational studies suggest that firms with comparatively high transaction volumes, long transaction times, and/or relatively tight …

Asynchronous Training Delivery Methods Used In Business And Industry, Jeffrey D. Rose

Graduate Research Papers

Effective training is a crucial component of a company's success. Traditional training delivery methods can be inconvenient, and cause conflicts with other trainee responsibilities. In this case, there are a number of alternative training delivery methods that can be used. The problem of this study was to identify the various asynchronous industry training methods, determine the advantages and disadvantages of each, and identify how selected Iowa industries are using these methods.

Filling Preposition-Based Templates To Capture Information From Medical Abstracts, Gondy Leroy, Hsinchun Chen Jan 2002

Filling Preposition-Based Templates To Capture Information From Medical Abstracts, Gondy Leroy, Hsinchun Chen

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Due to the recent explosion of information in the biomedical field, it is hard for a single researcher to review the complex network involving genes, proteins, and interactions. We are currently building GeneScene, a toolkit that will assist researchers in reviewing existing literature, and report on the first phase in our development effort: extracting the relevant information from medical abstracts. We are developing a medical parser that extracts information, fills basic prepositional-based templates, and combines the templates to capture the underlying sentence logic. We tested our parser on 50 unseen abstracts and found that it extracted 246 templates with a …

Spanish For School Nurses: A Specialized Program For Use In Teaching Basic Spanish To Nurses Who Work In A Multicultural Environment, William Earl Wood Jr.

MA TESOL Collection

During the past twenty years, there has been a great influx of Spanish speaking people into the United States, especially the state of North Carolina. This increase of Spanish speakers has had an impact on all areas of society: employment, housing, health care, transportation, and education. This project focuses on language training for a specialized group who has a daily need to communicate in this new environment: school nurses. It examines materials that are currently available to teach nurses the Spanish language. It discusses the language requirements that nurses use to function in a multicultural environment. It looks at some …

Personal Account Books Of Sir Walter Scott, Sam Mckinstry, Marie Fletcher Jan 2002

Personal Account Books Of Sir Walter Scott, Sam Mckinstry, Marie Fletcher

Accounting Historians Journal

This study examines the personal account books of Sir Walter Scott, the world-renowned Scottish author, a topic not explored before by Scott scholars or accounting historians. It sets the account books in the context of Scott's accounting education and experience, which took place at the time of the Scottish Enlightenment, an 18th century movement which saw a great flowering of writings on accountancy in Scotland as well as considerable progress in the arts and sciences. The style, layout and content of the account books is also studied from the point of view of elucidating Scott's domestic financial arrangements and expenditure …

Professional Dominance: The Relationship Between Financial Accounting And Managerial Accounting, 1926-1986, Alan John Richardson Jan 2002

Professional Dominance: The Relationship Between Financial Accounting And Managerial Accounting, 1926-1986, Alan John Richardson

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper examines the relationship between financial and managerial accounting as reflected in articles, editorials and letters to the editor published in Cost and Management, the Canadian trade magazine for management accountants, between 1926 and 1986. It has been claimed that during this period management accounting techniques lost their relevance to manufacturers, in part, due to the dominance of financial accounting over managerial accounting. This is also the period in which management accounting struggled to become recognized as a profession distinct from financial accounting. The analysis thus focuses on the jurisdictional dispute between financial and managerial accounting and the mechanisms …
