Five-Hundred Life-Saving Interventions And Their Misuse In The Debate Over Regulatory Reform, Lisa Heinzerling
Five-Hundred Life-Saving Interventions And Their Misuse In The Debate Over Regulatory Reform, Lisa Heinzerling
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
The author argues that John D. Graham, administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, holds strong anti-environmental biases and has perpetuated and encouraged a misrepresentation of his own research, which has largely influenced health, safety, and environmental regulation.

Beyond "Pesticides And Beyond" : The Partnership Of Creative Writing And Service Learning In Engendering And Perpetuating Social Activism, Paul David Tuff
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This paper examines how the partnering of service learning with creative writing produces and perpetuates social activism, especially with regard to farmworkers. First, I use a personal narrative to explain how our experiences influence the way we think about--or ignore--farmworkers and their struggles. I then discuss preparations made by my classmates and I from the fall 2001 432S course, "Pesticides and Beyond: The Enduring Legacy," before placement at service learning sites. These preparations included: classroom discussions of the historical, cultural, political, and ideological foundations of farmworker struggles; analyses of how power, privilege, and prejudice oppress farmworkers in America; and research …

Environmental Assessment : Middle Salt Creek Canyon Access Plan Canyonlands National Park, Utah, National Park Service, U.S. Department Of The Interior, Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands Research Bibliography
Salt Creek is the largest drainage in the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park. The creek supports one of the most important riparian ecosystems in the park. It is also the heart of the Salt Creek National Register Archeological District, the area with the highest recorded density of archeological sites in the park. A tributary canyon contains the spectacular Angel Arch, a well-known geologic formation that for many years has been a destination point for park visitors. In 1998 the U.S. District Court for the State of Utah ruled, in a lawsuit filed by the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, that …

Introduction To Endangered Peoples Of Africa And The Middle East : Struggles To Survive And Thrive, Robert K. Hitchcock, Alan J. Osborn
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Endangered Peoples of Africa and the Middle East: Struggles to Survive and Thrive is about human populations residing in Africa and the Middle East, a diverse region that is connected geographically, culturally, and historically. The African continent is vast and covers 11.7 million square miles, or an area slightly larger than the combined area of the United States and South America (Table 1). Today, the African continent is home to some 771 million people distributed within fifty-four separate countries. Of the world's continents, Africa is by far the most diverse culturally. In Sudan, for example, there are over 200 ethnic …

Sustaining Geographies Of Hope: Cultural Resources On Public Lands, Sandi Zellmer
Sustaining Geographies Of Hope: Cultural Resources On Public Lands, Sandi Zellmer
Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications
This Article integrates constitutional principles, statutory requirements, and federal policy governing the use and preservation of cultural resources to sketch out a decision-making framework for public land managers. Specific examples of cases where American Indian interests have been pitted against competing demands at Devils Tower National Monument, the Indian Pass area of the California Desert, and the Medicine Wheel are examined to illustrate optimal solutionssolutions allowing the greatest possible accommodation of cultural, even spiritual, interests, while protecting the resources from degradation. The conflicts at these sites, and the opportunities presented by these conflicts, show that federal agencies can adopt reasonable …

Effect Of Motor Vehicle Emissions On Respiratory Health In An Urban Area, David L Buckeridge, Richard Glazier, Bart J Harvey, Michael Escobar, Carl Amrhein, John Frank
Effect Of Motor Vehicle Emissions On Respiratory Health In An Urban Area, David L Buckeridge, Richard Glazier, Bart J Harvey, Michael Escobar, Carl Amrhein, John Frank
Office of the Provost
Motor vehicles emit particulate matter < 2.5 microm in diameter (PM(2.5)), and as a result, PM(2.5) concentrations tend to be elevated near busy streets. Studies of the relationship between motor vehicle emissions and respiratory health are generally limited by difficulties in exposure assessment. We developed a refined exposure model and implemented it using a geographic information system to estimate the average daily census enumeration area (EA) exposure to PM(2.5). Southeast Toronto, the study area, includes 334 EAs and covers 16 km(2) of urban area. We used hospital admission diagnostic codes from 1990 to 1992 to measure respiratory and genitourinary conditions. We assessed the effect of EA exposure on hospital admissions using a Poisson mixed-effects model and examined the spatial distributions of variables. Exposure to PM(2.5) has a significant effect on admission rates for a subset of respiratory diagnoses (asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, upper respiratory tract infection), with a relative risk of 1.24 (95% confidence interval, 1.05-1.45) for a log(10) increase in exposure. We noted a weaker effect of exposure on hospitalization for all respiratory conditions, and no effect on hospitalization for nonrespiratory conditions.
