In Indonesia, paternalistic models of health care, social distance between clients and service providers, and cultural norms discourage family planning clients from playing an active role in consultations. This report discusses the interventions needed to encourage clients to communicate more openly and more vigorously with providers. The study confirmed that educational interventions directed to family planning clients can help them become effective partners in their own care, assuming they meet with receptive providers. Communication interventions like Smart Patient complement and reinforce provider interpersonal communication and counseling training by giving clients the confidence and the skills to take advantage of increased …

The primary purpose of this essay is to suggest ways to create a universally inclusive curriculum, which, by definition, addresses the learning needs of all students, including students with disabilities or, in this case, students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Presented with the opportunity of having a d/Deaf students in a public speaking class, we reflect on the accommodations made, the assumptions inherent in an inclusive classroom, and the ideology of ableism. American schools traditionally have reflected and promoted societal values of autonomy and independence in the development of the individual child. This limited perspective on how humans come to know focuses on the accrued cultural capital of each learner and neglects the role of 'the other' in the construction of meaning. Such a view can be especially debilitating for students who have been identified as marginal learners. This dissertation examines both literary and non-literary works to illustrate how leftist writing was profoundly influenced by notions of eugenics which circulated widely in Depression-era America, though often just beneath the surface. One of the most popular movements during the Great Depression was the attempt to prove that certain groups of the American population were "unfit" and that society should take intentional steps to intervene in citizens' reproductive rights. This eugenics doctrine was so pervasive that it became embodied in a variety of texts, including many "leftist" texts, thereby producing an ideological crisis for many of these writers. This is a field study of families and home visitors in Early Head Start. Its purpose is to understand the social context of infants born into poverty and to understand the home visiting relationship when families receive intervention services from home visitors who are socially and economically different. Two questions were posed: First, how do socially and economically diverse families perceive infant well-being? Second, what is the experience of families who participate in Early Head Start? The study used interviews, participant observation, and cultural interpretation to understand the perspective of participant families.

Japanese Ningyo (dolls) are static art, individual sculptures and expressions of creativity. This paper explores the loss of these wonderful works of art. While western dolls fetch high prices and are highly sought after if even a few decades old, we explore the destination of most ningyo as they fail to be recognized or preserved. Particularly the dolls fashioned by women to decorate their homes, as their beauty fades they are set aside. What has happened to them? What is taking their place as globalization is changing the decorating desires of the Japanese?

The logic behind globalized advertising appeals is based on the premise that cultural value systems are converging. Yet, there is no clear agreement regarding the superiority of standardized campaigns vs. localized ones. One reason for this lack of agreement deals with the extent to which various cultures share similar values. The goal of this study is to apply a relatively new framework dealing with value differences developed by Schwartz [Adv. Exp. Soc. Psychol. 25 (1992) 1.] to New Zealand and the USA by looking at the connection between these values and possessions. The hypotheses received mix support. The results confirm …

There have been a limited number of studies investigating cross-cultural similarities and differences in family functioning. Previous research that has been conducted on the family functioning of families with a depressed member has indicated unhealthy family functioning as compared to families without a depressed member (Keitner, Miller, Epstein, Bishop, & Fruzzetti, 1987; Miller, Kabacoff, Keitner, Epstein, & Bishop, 1986; Sawyer, Sarris, Baghurst, Cross, & Kalucy, 1988). Culture is at the core of language teaching. Because classrooms are contact zones (Pratt 1991), teachers must have a well-developed sense of their own intercultural competence so that they may better facilitate the cross-cultural discovery inherent in language teaching. Teacher preparation programs need to provide opportunities for new teachers to increase their intercultural awareness. The purpose of this research was to qualitatively understand the experiences of pre-service teachers in a required culture-learning class at a large urban university. As Japan underwent rapid modernization and economic expansion after World War II, its cultural complex transformed into a postmodern mingling of Western and Eastern cultures, merging modern and antiquated tradition (Heine 1995:29). The Japanese have absorbed many Western traditions without immigrating, or living outside of their own (Eastern) society; Japanese marriage rituals exhibit such Eastern and Western cultural minglings. Buildings are a materialization of culture at a particular point in time. Subsequent modifications and new buildings express the culture at that time. The buildings of one city block, Squares 39 and 40, are examined at various points in time over the past three hundred years to document changes in the material expression of culture, and thereby, modification in the culture itself. The history of the city is viewed from the perspective of the people and the buildings of this single city block. Until fairly recently, researchers have not done much theoretical work on the subject of family law. Although the move towards theoretical work is a positive one, unfortunately, most of the latest reforms in family law have been uninformed by empirical studies. Furthermore, the few empirical studies that have been conducted are replete with intractable problems.

This qualitative study investigates the relationship between the two constructs: Organizational Climate and Organizational Commitment.

Litwin and Stringer (1968) suggested that a molar model is needed to explain employee behavior and motivation. Climate was proposed as this molar construct. Research concerning Organizational Climate resulted in multiple definitions and little consensus concerning the number and use of multiple dimensions of this construct. The almost exclusive use of survey methods coupled with methodological confusion with Organizational Culture created difficulty with the use of this important construct.

This project considers the demands American women confront about their societal roles, particularly cultural discourses that urge women to become biological mothers. These discourses become especially compelling during eras when women transgress ideological boundaries, leaving the constructed domestic space and taking places in the public sphere. I analyze responses to these discourses as they are manifested in literature written between 1928 and 1948 as well as in the late twentieth century. My analysis, informed by cultural studies and feminist theory, depends upon my use of intersubjectivity theory, particularly as articulated by Jessica Benjamin. I discuss the role of the body …

Towards the end of the Twentieth Century there were a number of examples of change to public policy that were not the product of political debate and public consideration. Rather, they appear to have originated in another less visible, and therefore less open to critique manner. It is argued that it is changes to the general thrust of public opinion that have given validity to these policy changes.
