Landscaping The Lehigh: The Creation Of A Middle Industrial Landscape In Nineteenth-Century Pennsylvania., Augustine Nigro
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Located sixty miles above Philadelphia, the Lehigh Valley follows the seventy-mile path of the Lehigh River as it descends from the Pocono Mountains south through the Blue Mountains into the rich agricultural lands of the Appalachian Great Valley. From 1817 to 1829, the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company developed a system of slack water navigation along the river. With the opening of the channel in 1829, extractive industries …

Progression Of Chronic Renal Disease In Several Animal Models: Possible Role Of Decreased Renal Nitric Oxide Production As A Primary Causative Factor., Aaron D. Erdely
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Chronic renal disease is the progressive loss of renal function that can lead to end-stage renal disease. Recent studies from our laboratory have shown decreased total NO production in patients with renal disease. Animal models have shown decreased total and renal NO production and chronic NOS inhibition in otherwise healthy rats causes renal injury. The overall objective in this set of studies was to investigate intrarenal NO production in various models of CRD and determine if NO deficiency parallels, and perhaps causes renal injury. In the first study, we report that normal male SD rats exhibit age-dependent declines in total …
