The Limnology Of Lake Clark, Alaska, Alexander Xanthus Wilkens Dec 2002

The Limnology Of Lake Clark, Alaska, Alexander Xanthus Wilkens

Biological Sciences

This study gathered baseline limnological data to investigate the thermal structure, water quality, phytoplankton, and zooplankton of Lake Clark, Alaska. Results indicate Lake Clark is oligotrophic and mixes biannually, but stratification is weak and thermoclines are deep. Longitudinal gradients were seen in measurements of temperature, suspended solids, turbidity, light penetration, algal biomass, and zooplankton density. Wind and tributary inputs determine the thermal regime. Glacially-influenced tributaries drive turbidity and light gradients by introducing suspended solids to the inlet end of the lake. Suspended solids likely create the algal biomass gradient by limiting the light available for photosynthesis in the inlet basin. …

Winter Foraging Ecology Of Moose In The Tanana Flats And Alaska Range Foothills, C. Tom Seaton Dec 2002

Winter Foraging Ecology Of Moose In The Tanana Flats And Alaska Range Foothills, C. Tom Seaton

Biological Sciences

I studied woody browse distribution, production, removal, species composition, twig size, moose diets, and predicted daily intake of resident and migratory moose in the Tanana Flats and adjacent Alaska Range Foothills, Alaska, 1999-2000. Density of moose in these areas was high (1.1 moose/km²). Moose were experiencing density-dependent effects on reproduction and growth, exhibited by low adult twinning rate (6%) and absence of pregnant yearlings, yet 17.5 kg higher 10-month-old calf body weights in the migratory segment. Of all willow, poplar, and paper birch plants sampled, 74% had a broomed architecture, which I attributed to heavy use by moose. Using a …

A Search For Identity In The Narrative Maelstrom: A Psychoanalytic Approach To Ishmael In Moby-Dick, Kim Christopher Williamson Dec 2002

A Search For Identity In The Narrative Maelstrom: A Psychoanalytic Approach To Ishmael In Moby-Dick, Kim Christopher Williamson

English

'Call me Ishmael.' This opening line has confronted many a wary student first opening Moby-Dick. This thesis also confronts this line, by way of the enigma that is the narrator of the novel. Critics have long noted the fragmented nature of Moby-Dick, especially its oddly varying points of view. The book opens with a homodiegetic narrator telling a sea adventure tale, but by the end is dominated by a heterodiegetic narrator telling the story of Ahab's tragedy. Using classic Freudian psychology and some Lacanian theory, this thesis makes a case for the complexity and importance of Ishmael in the structure …

Comparison Of Snowshoe Hare Populations In Interior Alaska, Bjorn Flora Dec 2002

Comparison Of Snowshoe Hare Populations In Interior Alaska, Bjorn Flora

Biological Sciences

Snowshoe hares, Lepus americanus, are a 'keystone' prey species in northern boreal forests and experience population fluctuations of 8-11-years. Despite intense responses of both vegetation and predators to changes in hare densities, landscape-scale comparisons of hare populations in Alaska have been limited to qualitative descriptions. We conducted capture-recapture studies of snowshoe hares at 5 locales in the Tanana valley, from Tok in the east to Clear in the west from 1999 to 2002. Snowshoe hare densities were highest in 1999 (x=6.36 ha⁻¹, SE=0.63) and declined thereafter. We were unable to detect declines in apparent survival during declining densities in our …

The Ecological Genetics Of Gynodioecy In Silene Acaulis L. (Caryophyllaceae): Spatial Sex Structure And Inbreeding Depression, Stephen Robert Keller Dec 2002

The Ecological Genetics Of Gynodioecy In Silene Acaulis L. (Caryophyllaceae): Spatial Sex Structure And Inbreeding Depression, Stephen Robert Keller

Biological Sciences

Gynodioecy, the co-occurrence of females and hermaphrodites, is considered an intermediate step in the evolution of separate sexes in flowering plants. Highly variable female frequencies among populations suggest structuring of sex determining genes and differences in the relative fitness of females and hermaphrodites as seed parents. I investigated spatial variability in sex ratio and the effects of inbreeding on offspring quality in Silene acaulis. Female frequencies varied among populations from 0.32 to 0.69, and most were at temporal equilibrium. Females were significantly clumped within two of six populations. Females produced from 4 to 27 times as many fruits as hermaphrodites. …

Growth, Foraging Behavior And Distribution Of Age-0 Arctic Grayling In An Alaskan Stream, Cheryl Ann Dion Dec 2002

Growth, Foraging Behavior And Distribution Of Age-0 Arctic Grayling In An Alaskan Stream, Cheryl Ann Dion

Fisheries

I evaluated the ability of three models to relate habitat characteristics to habitat quality for age-0 Arctic grayling Thymallullus arcticus in an Alaska stream. A temperature-based growth model made accurate predictions, showing it can reliably assess thermal habitat quality. Deviations between predicted and observed growth were useful because they identified the timing of possible critical periods, when competition for food or space may cause density-dependent mortality and emigration. A foraging model consistently overestimated the mean prey size of fish, showing that such models need further work before then can accurately assess food availability from invertebrate drift. A habitat selection model …

Feasibility Of Using Standard Targets To Measure Sound Attenuation In Rivers With Varying Suspended Sediment Loads, Carl T. Pfisterer Dec 2002

Feasibility Of Using Standard Targets To Measure Sound Attenuation In Rivers With Varying Suspended Sediment Loads, Carl T. Pfisterer

Fisheries

In this study I examined the feasibility of using standard targets to measure sound attenuation in water due to suspended sediment. I determined that the variability of the target strength measurements was sufficiently high to prevent the use of this measure in obtaining accurate attenuation estimates. Average target strength values for a 1.5 inch tungsten carbide sphere differed by as much as 11.4 dB with spreads of the upper and lower 90% values as high as 18 dB. This high variability was likely due to a combination of factors that include multipath signal returns (exacerbated by relatively high transducer side …

Spawning Habitat Characteristics Of Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasii) In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Brandee Lynn Gerke Dec 2002

Spawning Habitat Characteristics Of Pacific Herring (Clupea Pallasii) In Prince William Sound, Alaska, Brandee Lynn Gerke

Fisheries

Spawning habitats of Pacific herring in Prince William Sound, Alaska were analyzed to determine the importance of habitat features including vegetation type, percent vegetative cover, substrate type, water depth, and shoreline slope in the importance of herring spawning ground selection. Sidescan sonar data were used to compare bottom habitat characteristics of herring spawning areas vs. non-spawn areas. No significant differences in vegetation or substrate type were detected between areas where herring do and do not spawn. Generalized linear models and analysis of variance models were constructed to predict the probability of herring spawn and estimate egg densities given habitat information …

Stratigraphy, Major Oxide Geochemistry, And ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar Geochronology Of A Tephra Section Near Tok, Alaska, Janet Schaefer Dec 2002

Stratigraphy, Major Oxide Geochemistry, And ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar Geochronology Of A Tephra Section Near Tok, Alaska, Janet Schaefer

Geosciences

Stratigraphy, major oxide geochemistry, and ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar geochronology are used to describe a tephra section near Tok, Alaska, north ofthe Wrangell volcanic field. This tephra section contains seven type II tephras and two type I tephras. Hornblende in a tephra near the base of the section was dated at 627.5 +/- 47.7 ka using the ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar method of single-step total laser fusion. This hornblende-rich tephra is here named the Tetlin Tephra. The age and composition of the Tetlin Tephra indicates that it is likely the product of an explosive phase of activity of Mount Drum volcano, where petrologically similar domes were …

Geology And Gold Mineralization Of The Richardson District, East-Central Alaska, Garth E. Graham Dec 2002

Geology And Gold Mineralization Of The Richardson District, East-Central Alaska, Garth E. Graham

Geosciences

The Richardson district contains multiple granitic units intruding gneiss and schist. The Bald Knob prospect contains gold-bearing quartz veins with the assemblage Bi-̊ Au-̊ hedleyite and high methane fluid inclusions. These features indicate very low fs₂-f₀₂ conditions, lower than any reported for 90 Ma interior Alaska gold systems, including the nearby Democrat and Buckeye prospects. The Bald Knob and Democrat Lode prospects returned ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar ages of 1̃04 and 9̃0 Ma, respectively. Peraluminous dikes possess collisional tectonic signatures and interpreted age of 114 Ma. Younger dikes and 3 km² granite pluton possess arc-type compositions and yield ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar ages of 9̃0 Ma. …

Attenuation Of The Lg Phase In Interior Alaska, Duncan A. Marriott Dec 2002

Attenuation Of The Lg Phase In Interior Alaska, Duncan A. Marriott

Geosciences

A simultaneous inversion of a large dataset produced robust estimates of regional attenuation for the Lg phase in interior Alaska. Data were collected from summer 1999 through summer 2001 from the Broadband Experiment Across the Alaska Range (BEAAR). Spectra calculated from this dataset were used in a nonlinear simultaneous least squares inversion to determine source factors, path effects and site amplification terms. The average regional attenuation of the Lg phase in interior Alaska was found to be: LgQ(f)=166f⁰·⁵⁸ Variation in regional attenuation has two main characteristics: variation on small spatial scales caused by small crustal heterogeneities, and increased excitation of …

Comparison Of Geodetic And Glaciological Mass Balance On Gulkana Glacier, Alaska, Leif Harrington Cox Dec 2002

Comparison Of Geodetic And Glaciological Mass Balance On Gulkana Glacier, Alaska, Leif Harrington Cox

Geosciences

The net mass balance on Gulkana Glacier has been measured since 1966 by the glaciological method, in which seasonal balances are measured at three index sites and extrapolated over large areas of the glacier. Systematic errors accumulate through time in this method; therefore the geodetic balance, in which errors are independent of time, was calculated for comparison to and possible calibration of the glaciological method. Digital elevation models (DEMs) of the glacier in 1974, 1993, and 1999 were prepared and geodetic balances computed, giving -6.0+̲0.5 m of water equivalent (weq) from 1974 to 1993 and -11.8+̲0.5 m weq from 1974 …

Evidence For An Epigenetic Mechanism By Which Hsp90 Acts As A Capacitor For Morphological Evolution, Vincent E. Sollars, Xiangyi Lu, Li Xiao, Xiaoyan Wang, Mark D. Garfinkel, Douglas M. Ruden Dec 2002

Evidence For An Epigenetic Mechanism By Which Hsp90 Acts As A Capacitor For Morphological Evolution, Vincent E. Sollars, Xiangyi Lu, Li Xiao, Xiaoyan Wang, Mark D. Garfinkel, Douglas M. Ruden

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Morphological alterations have been shown to occur in Drosophila melanogaster when function of Hsp90 (heat shock 0-kDa protein 1α, encoded by Hsp83) is compromised during development1. Genetic selection maintains the altered phenotypes in subsequent generations1. Recent experiments have shown, however, that phenotypic variation still occurs in nearly isogenic recombinant inbred strains of Arabidopsis thaliana2. Using a sensitized isogenic D. melanogaster strain, iso-KrIf-1, we confirm this finding and present evidence supporting an epigenetic mechanism for Hsp90’s capacitor function, whereby reduced activity of Hsp90 induces a heritably altered chromatin state. The altered chromatin state is evidenced by ectopic expression …

From March to May 2001, aerosol size distributions and chemical compositions were measured using differential mobility analyzers (DMA), an aerodynamic particle sizer (APS), Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactors (MOUDI), and denuder samplers onboard the Twin Otter aircraft as part of the Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE)-Asia campaign. Of the 19 research flights, measurements on four flights that represented different aerosol characteristics are analyzed in detail. Clear-column radiative closure is studied by comparing aerosol extinctions predicted using in situ aerosol size distribution and chemical composition measurements to those derived from the 14-wavelength NASA Ames Airborne Tracking Sun photometer (AATS-14). In the boundary layer, …

Lake-Catchment Interactions With Climate In The Low Arctic Of Southern West Greenland, N. John Anderson, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Christopher E. Gibson, Bent Hasholt, Melanie J. Leng

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Arctic hydrology plays a central role in the earth’s heat balance and ocean circulation (Vörösmarty et al. 2001). Future changes associated with human influence on the climate system are also predicted to cause major changes in the energy and hydrologic mass balance of Arctic catchments. Climate change will likely affect permafrost and snowmelt, which dominate Arctic hydrology and control the chemistry of surface runoff (and hence streams and lakes) as water percolates through the active layer. However, the controls and dynamic impact of snowmelt are poorly understood, because this critical timeframe is often missed by sampling programs. In the Søndre …

Monitoring Of Sandstorms With Rocsat-1 Oci Data, Shih-Jen Huang, Gin-Rong Liu, Tsung-Hua Kuo, Tang-Huang Lin, Chih-Kang Liang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The Ocean Color Imager (OCI) onboard the ROCSAT-1 Satellite was employed to demonstrate its capability in monitoring sandstorm events around Mongolia and northwestern China where they have been occurring in great frequency over these past few years. The OCI measures the radiance from the visible to near infrared regions in six spectral channels. The radiance can be used to calculate the aerosol optical depth (AOD) of the atmosphere through an atmospheric correction algorithm. The variation in the AOD during January and February of 2001 is investigated in this study. A set of OCI images covering the Yellow Sea was selected …

Experimental Nonlinear Modeling Of A Rotating Machine With An Oil Film Bearing, Chiou-Fong Chung, Pi-Cheng Tung, Chiang-Nan Chang Dec 2002

Experimental Nonlinear Modeling Of A Rotating Machine With An Oil Film Bearing, Chiou-Fong Chung, Pi-Cheng Tung, Chiang-Nan Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this study the system identification method is applied to obtain a nonlinear equation for an oil film rotating system. The centrifugal force induced by an unbalanced mass is used as the input signal for identification, and the phase between the input signal and the measured output vibration amplitude is calculated to perform the identification. Stability analysis and system performance are evaluated by using the root locus and the Floquet-Liapunov theorem. Based on the model, the oil whirl of the journal bearing can be predicted. A comparison between the simulation results and some experimented data shows the feasibility of the …

Application Of The Force Control On The Working Path Tacking, Sun-Run Wang, Zhi-Zhong Qiao, Pi-Cheng Tung Dec 2002

Application Of The Force Control On The Working Path Tacking, Sun-Run Wang, Zhi-Zhong Qiao, Pi-Cheng Tung

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

For the application of tracking the path on workpieces, the CCD (Charge Couple Device) identificating system is generally used as one of the popular resolutions. However, the implementation of CCD identificating system is complex and environmental-limited. This study presents a compliant motion controller by using the end-effector installed with a force sensor. This results the smoothly path tracking on a workpiece. By applying the algorithm of Fuzzy into this compliant motion, the compliant control is improved and the path on the workpiece is found more quickly and accurately. A radius compensating method is used to correct the measured data. The …
