Chaotic Free-Space Laser Communication Over Turbulent Channel, N. F. Rulkov, Mikhail Vorontsov, L. Illing Dec 2002

Chaotic Free-Space Laser Communication Over Turbulent Channel, N. F. Rulkov, Mikhail Vorontsov, L. Illing

Electro-Optics and Photonics Faculty Publications

The dynamics of errors caused by atmospheric turbulence in a self-synchronizing chaos-based communication system that stably transmits information over a ∼5  km free-space laser link is studied experimentally. Binary information is transmitted using a chaotic sequence of short-term pulses as a carrier. The information signal slightly shifts the chaotic time position of each pulse depending on the information bit. We report the results of an experimental analysis of the atmospheric turbulence in the channel and the impact of turbulence on the bit-error-rate performance of this chaos-based communication system.

How Massive Single Stars End Their Life, A. Heger, C. L. Fryer, S. E. Woosley, N. Langer, Dieter H. Hartmann Dec 2002

How Massive Single Stars End Their Life, A. Heger, C. L. Fryer, S. E. Woosley, N. Langer, Dieter H. Hartmann

Publications

How massive stars die - what sort of explosion and remnant each produces - depends chiefly on the masses of their helium cores and hydrogen envelopes at death. For single stars, stellar winds are the only means of mass loss, and these are chiefly a function of the metallicity of the star. We dicuss how meallicity, and a simplified prescription for its effect on mass loss, affects the evolution and final fate of massive stars. We map, as a function of mass and metallicity, where black holes and neutron stars are likely to form and where different types of supernovae …

He Ii Reverberation In Active Galactic Nucleus Spectra, Mark C. Bottorff, Jack A. Baldwin, Gary J. Ferland, Jason W. Ferguson, Kirk T. Korista

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

This paper compares the observed reverberation response lags and the intensity ratios of the broad-line region (BLR) emission lines He II λ1640, He II λ4686, and C IV λ1549 with predictions. Published observations indicate that the He II λ1640 lag is 3 times shorter than the lags of He II λ4686 or C IV λ1549. Diverse models, however, do not reproduce this observation. Extensive improved numerical simulations of the hydrogenic isoelectronic sequence emission show that the He II spectrum remains especially simple, even in the central regions of a luminous quasar. Line trapping never builds up a significant population of …

A Service Discovery-Enabled Lcd Projector Device, Jeevan Kale

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The widespread deployment of inexpensive communications technology, computational resources in the networking infrastructure and network-enabled end devices pose a problem for end users: how to locate a particular network service or device out of those accessible. Service providers use Service Discovery Services (SDS) to advertise the descriptions of available or already running services, while clients use SDS to compose queries for locating these services. Service descriptions and queries use the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) to encode vendor specific information and device- or service-specific capabilities as well as the actions addressed to the device or service. This report presents the architecture …

Self-Assembly, Templation And Biomimetics, Xuehe Li Dec 2002

Self-Assembly, Templation And Biomimetics, Xuehe Li

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Self-assembly, templation and biomimetics are three important, overlapping areas in supramolecularChemistry. Some contributions to these three areas are introduced. Novel substituted trispyridylmethanol derived ligands were synthesized to mimic the active site of carbonic anhydrase. The key two-step process in constructing the trispyridylmethanol core structure is proven to be more efficient than the traditional one-step synthesis. Self-assembly is a very efficient way to form nanoscale structure from relatively simple subunits. Tetraphenylmethane-based subunits were synthesized. The result of self-assembly reactions demonstrated the formation of 1~3 nm sized molecules in one step. Potential multi-generation self-assembly on this subunit is also discussed. A novel …

On The Effect Of Random Errors In Gridded Bathymetric Compilations, Martin Jakobsson, Brian R. Calder, Larry A. Mayer

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

We address the problem of compiling bathymetric data sets with heterogeneous coverage and a range of data measurement accuracies. To generate a regularly spaced grid, we are obliged to interpolate sparse data; our objective here is to augment this product with an estimate of confidence in the interpolated bathymetry based on our knowledge of the component of random error in the bathymetric source data. Using a direct simulation Monte Carlo method, we utilize data from the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean database to develop a suitable methodology for assessment of the standard deviations of depths in the interpolated …

Two-Photon Bremsstrahlung Processes In Atoms: Polarization Effects And Analytic Results For The Coulomb Potential, A. A. Krylovetskiĭ, N. L. Manakov, S. I. Marmo, Anthony F. Starace Dec 2002

Two-Photon Bremsstrahlung Processes In Atoms: Polarization Effects And Analytic Results For The Coulomb Potential, A. A. Krylovetskiĭ, N. L. Manakov, S. I. Marmo, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

The partial wave analysis of two-photon free–free (bremsstrahlung) electron transition cross sections during scattering by a static potential U(r), as well as by an atom with a nonzero angular momentum, is carried out. The dipole interaction with radiation is taken into account in the second order of perturbation theory for the general case of elliptic polarization of photons. The polarization and angular dependences of the twophoton potential scattering amplitude is presented as a combination of the scalar product of electron momenta and photon polarization vectors and five atomic parameters containing Legendre polynomials of the scattering angle as …

Search For Minimal Supergravity In Single-Electron Events With Jets And Large Missing Transverse Energy In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1.8 Tev, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

We describe a search for evidence of minimal supergravity (MSUGRA) in 92.7 pb-1 of data collected with the DØ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp̅ collider at√s =1.8 TeV. Events with a single electron, four or more jets, and large missing transverse energy were used in this search. The major backgrounds are from W +jets, misidentified multijet, tt̅, and WW production. We observe no excess above the expected number of background events in our data. A new limit in terms of MSUGRA model parameters is obtained.

Surface And Deep Ocean Circulation In The Subpolar North Atlantic During The Mid-Pleistocene Revolution, Amy K. Wright, Benjamin P. Flower Dec 2002

Surface And Deep Ocean Circulation In The Subpolar North Atlantic During The Mid-Pleistocene Revolution, Amy K. Wright, Benjamin P. Flower

Marine Science Faculty Publications

We investigated surface and deep ocean variability in the subpolar North Atlantic from 1000 to 500 thousand years ago (ka) based on two Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) sites, Feni drift site 980 (55°29′N, 14°42′W) and Bjorn drift site 984 (61°25′N, 24°04′W). Benthic foraminiferal stable isotope data, planktic foraminiferal faunas, ice‐rafted debris data, and faunally based sea‐surface temperature estimates help test the hypothesis that oceanographic changes in the North Atlantic region were associated with the onset of the 100‐kyr world during the mid‐Pleistocene revolution. Based on percentage of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (s) records from both sites, surface waters during interglacials and glacials …

Level Oriented Formal Model For Asynchronous Circuit Verification And Its Efficient Analysis Method, Eric G. Mercer, Tomoya Kitai, Chris Myers, Yusuke Oguro, Tomohiro Yoneda

Faculty Publications

Using a level-oriented model for verification of asynchronous circuits helps users to easily construct formal models with high readability or to naturally model datapath circuits. On the other hand, in order to use such a model on large circuits, techniques to avoid the state explosion problem must be developed. This paper first introduces a level-oriented formal model based on time Petri nets, and then proposes its partial order reduction algorithm that prunes unnecessary state generation while guaranteeing the correctness of the verification.

Sea Surface Salinity Measurements In The Historical Database, Frederick M. Bingham, Stephan D. Howden, Chester J. Koblinsky Dec 2002

Sea Surface Salinity Measurements In The Historical Database, Frederick M. Bingham, Stephan D. Howden, Chester J. Koblinsky

Faculty Publications

We have examined historical distributions of sea surface salinity (SSS) observations in a data set consisting of a combination of the World Ocean Database 1998 (WOD98) and a thermosalinograph and bucket salinity database collected from volunteer observing ships. It is well known that SSS in much of the world's ocean is measured infrequently or not at all. We find that 27% of one-degree squares in the world ocean (open and coastal, excluding the Arctic Ocean) had no observations of SSS in the historical database, and 70% had 10 or fewer. Systematic sampling of SSS (more than 10,000 observations per year …

Canenermiut Lifeways And Worldview And Western Fish And Wildlife Management, Carl T. Jack Dec 2002

Canenermiut Lifeways And Worldview And Western Fish And Wildlife Management, Carl T. Jack

Rural Development

The Canenermiut inter-generational worldview embodies the proper use and conservation of the resources necessary to sustain life from time immemorial. The classical Yupiaq conservation ethics in the utilization of subsistence resources are well established and practiced to this day by Canenermiut that is geared to the survival of their culture and community. When western fish and wildlife managers promulgate regulations from urban areas of Alaska on the taking of subsistence resources in rural Alaska they often find out that rural residents such as the Canenermiut ... are unwilling to follow the regulations. Caneneq is a coastal area between Kusquqvak (Kuskokwim) …

Excitation Of The Ionized Nitrogen Molecule In The Aurora, Kim Nielsen Dec 2002

Excitation Of The Ionized Nitrogen Molecule In The Aurora, Kim Nielsen

Physics

An understanding of the excitation mechanism of the ionospheric molecules during auroral activity is of vital importance for the overall ionospheric understanding including its interaction with the magnetosphere. In this thesis we study two emissions originating from the excited nitrogen molecule ion. The first negative (0,1) emission at 4278 Å originating from the B state, and Meinel (2,0) emission at 7852 Å originating from the A state during moderate to strong aurora have been observed with an imaging spectrograph at Poker Flat, Alaska. The B state has a short lifetime compared to the inverse collision frequency at auroral altitudes, while …

Rapid Evaluation Of The Gel Strength Of Gtl Products During A Prolonged Trans-Alaska Pipeline Shutdown, Michael Donovon Timmcke Dec 2002

Rapid Evaluation Of The Gel Strength Of Gtl Products During A Prolonged Trans-Alaska Pipeline Shutdown, Michael Donovon Timmcke

Engineering

A prolonged winter shutdown of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline (TAPS) could cause the fluid in the pipeline to form a gel with sufficient strength to prevent restart. With the economic viability of a North Slope Gas-To-Liquid (GTL) plant improving, understanding the effect the addition of GTL products to TAPS will have on the gel strength of pipeline fluids is essential to quantify the risk of such a project. This study presents the development of a fast cold ramp technique to predict the gel strength of TAPS fluids. The gel strength of various blend ratios of GTL and crude oil are determined …

Determining The Impacts Of Storage Practice And Treatment Technology On The Formation Of Disinfection Byproducts, Greta Myerchin Mcgee Dec 2002

Determining The Impacts Of Storage Practice And Treatment Technology On The Formation Of Disinfection Byproducts, Greta Myerchin Mcgee

Theses (Unassigned)

Disinfection byproducts (DBP) are formed during the reaction of chemical disinfectants with natural organic material (NOM). DBPs are potential carcinogens and are regulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEP A) under the Disinfectant/DBP (D/DBP) rule. High concentrations of NOM in drinking water sources used by Alaska's communities often result in the formation of DBPs during treatment. Since surface water sources in the Arctic are frozen for 6-9 months of the year, communities are often forced to store raw water for treatment during the winter or treat and store enough drinking water during the summer to last through the winter. …

Energetics Of Hibernation In The Arctic Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus Parryii Kenicotti), Shawna Karpovich Dec 2002

Energetics Of Hibernation In The Arctic Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus Parryii Kenicotti), Shawna Karpovich

Biological Sciences

Arctic ground squirrels (Spermophilus parryii kenicotti) hibernate underground; experiencing burrows temperatures of -5 to -25C̊. Hibernation consists of 7-9 months of torpor interrupted every 2-3 weeks by 10-20 h arousal episodes with high body temperatures and metabolic rates. Metabolic rates and body temperatures were measured during arousal episodes under temperate and arctic conditions. No difference in cost of arousal episodes was detected. Yet, when the cost of thermogenesis during torpor was included, proportional cost of arousal episodes decreased from 86 to 27% comparing temperate to arctic conditions. The relationship between metabolic rate and body temperature was examined during the recooling …
