Long and short interspersed elements (LINEs and SINEs) are retroelements that make up almost half of the human genome. L1 and Alu represent the most prolific human LINE and SINE families, respectively. Only a few Alu elements are able to retropose, and the factors determining their retroposition capacity are poorly understood. The data presented in this paper indicate that the length of Alu "A-tails" is one of the principal factors in determining the retropositional capability of an Alu element. The A stretches of the Alu subfamilies analyzed, both old (Alu S and J) and young (Ya5), had a Poisson distribution …

Accurate Quantification Of Steady And Pulsatile Flow With Segmented K-Space Magnetic Resonance Velocimetry, Haosen Zhang, Sandra S. Halliburton, James R. Moore, Orlando P. Simonetti, Paulo R. Schvartzman, Richard D. White, George P. Chatzimavroudis

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Conventional non-segmented magnetic resonance phase velocity mapping (MRPVM) is an accurate but relatively slow velocimetric technique. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the much faster segmented k-space MRPVM in quantifying flow. The axial velocity was measured in four straight tubes (inner diameter: 5.6–26.2 mm), using a segmented MRPVM sequence with seven lines of k-space per segment. The flow rate and flow volume were accurately quantified (errorssteady (r2=0.99) and pulsatile flow (r2=0.98), respectively. The measured velocity profiles and flow rates from the segmented sequence agreed …

Digital Image Similarity For Geo-Spatial Knowledge Management, James Carswell Sep 2002

Digital Image Similarity For Geo-Spatial Knowledge Management, James Carswell

Conference papers

The amount and availability of high-quality geo-spatial image data, such as digital satellite and aerial photographs, is increasing dramatically. Task-based management of such visual information and associated knowledge is a central concern for organisations that rely on digital imagery. We are developing geo-spatial knowledge management techniques that employ case-based reasoning as the core methodology. In order to provide effective retrieval of task-based experiences that center around geo-spatial imagery, we need to forward novel similarity metrics for directly comparing the image components of experience cases. Based on work in geo-spatial image database retrieval, we are building an effective similarity metric for …

Preserving Monumental Landscapes Under The Antiquities Act, Christine A. Klein Sep 2002

Preserving Monumental Landscapes Under The Antiquities Act, Christine A. Klein

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article examines the Antiquities Act, a 1906 statute that delegates authority to the President to establish national monuments on federal lands for the protection of prehistoric structures and relics. This modest statute, originally a scant one page in length, has set off a century of intermittent controversy that its drafters could not have anticipated. Although Congress probably intended that the statute merely protect archaeological ruins from looting by treasure hunters, presidents quickly began to utilize the statute to preserve large natural landscapes—ranging from President Theodore Roosevelt's establishment of the 800,000-acre Grand Canyon National Monument in 1908 to President Clinton's …

Domestic Relations Family Violence Intervention; Offender Rehabilitation; Dhr Program Certification; Parole Conditions, Jacqueline Knapp Sep 2002

Domestic Relations Family Violence Intervention; Offender Rehabilitation; Dhr Program Certification; Parole Conditions, Jacqueline Knapp

Georgia State University Law Review

The Act requires the perpetrator of family violence to undergo a certified family violence intervention program. These programs are charged a fee to be considered by the Department of Corrections for certification under the Act. Once approved, these programs may not solicit business and must agree in writing to satisfy the Act's requirements. The Department of Corrections retains the authority to deny, suspend, or revoke a certificate for any program not complying with the Act's requirements. The Act creates the State Commission on Family Violence to develop a comprehensive plan to end family violence.

Issues In Reserve Requirement And Monetary Management In Nigeria, Moses F. Otu, Moses K. Tule Sep 2002

Issues In Reserve Requirement And Monetary Management In Nigeria, Moses F. Otu, Moses K. Tule

Economic and Financial Review

Reserve requirement has been used over the years as a tool of monetary management. Accordingly, banks are required by law to hold a fraction of their deposit liabilities with the Central Bank as reserves. In recent times however, the use of reserve requirement has undergone modification, from drastic reductions to outright elimination. This is attributed to the perception that under rapidly changing structure and financial system innovations, reserve requirement is a weak tool of monetary management. This paper reviews these issues and examines the effects of required reserve on the balance sheet operations of Deposit Money Banks and its impact …

Modeling The Thermal Behavior Of A Surface-Micromachined Linear-Displacement Thermomechanical Microactuator, Christian D. Lott, Timothy W. Mclain, John N. Harb, Larry L. Howell Sep 2002

Modeling The Thermal Behavior Of A Surface-Micromachined Linear-Displacement Thermomechanical Microactuator, Christian D. Lott, Timothy W. Mclain, John N. Harb, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

Thermomechanical microactuators possess a number of desirable attributes including ease of fabrication and large force and displacement capabilities relative to other types of microactuators. These advantages provide motivation for improving thermomechanical microactuator designs that are more energy efficient and thus better suited for low-power applications. To this end, this paper describes the development and experimental validation of a finite-difference thermal model of a thermomechanical in-plane microactuator (TIM). Comparisons between the model and experimental results demonstrate the importance of including the temperature dependence of several parameters in the model. Strategies for reducing the power and energy requirements of the TIM were …

Branching Ratio Measurements Of Exclusive B+ Decays To Charmonium With The Collider Detector At Fermilab, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration Sep 2002

Branching Ratio Measurements Of Exclusive B+ Decays To Charmonium With The Collider Detector At Fermilab, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report on measurements of the branching ratios of the decays B+→χc10 (1P)K+ and B+→J/ψK+π+π-, where χc10(1P)→J/ψγ and J/ψ→μ+μ- in pp̅ collisions at √s=1.8 TeV. Using a data sample from an integrated luminosity of 110 pb-1 collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab we measure the branching ratios to be BR(B+→ χc10(1P)K+)=15.5±5.4(stat)±1.5(syst)±1.3(br)×10-4 and BR(B+→J/ψK+π+π-)=6.9±1.8(stat)±1.1(syst)±0.4(br)×10-4 where (br) is due …

Rascals, The State, And Civil Society In Papua New Guinea, Nand E. Hart Nibbrig Sep 2002

Rascals, The State, And Civil Society In Papua New Guinea, Nand E. Hart Nibbrig

Pacific Studies

This article contends that as conditions worsen in Papua New Guinea's urban areas, it is apparent that the escalating crime and violence associated with rascal gangs are creating new rules of authority. The cumulative effects of criminal activities associated with gangs are negating the existing social order, spreading fear deep within civil society. In so doing, these activities deliver yet another blow to the legitimacy of the state. Continuous migration and the concomitant expansion of the newly urbanized population are defining a new urban landscape. Likewise, the persistent drain of national wealth by pervasive corruption, civil war, or domestic unrest …
