Conformity And Dissent, Cass R. Sunstein Sep 2002

Conformity And Dissent, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Much of the time, human beings do what others do. This is perfectly sensible, because the actions and statements of other people convey valuable information about what should be done. In addition, most people want the good opinion of others, and this desire promotes conformity. But conformity can lead both groups and institutions in unfortunate and even catastrophic directions. The most serious problem is that by following others, people fail to disclose what they know and believe, thus depriving society of important information. Those who dissent, and who reject the pressures imposed by others, perform valuable social functions, often at …

Probability Errors: Some Positive And Normative Implications For Tort And Contract Law, Eric A. Posner Sep 2002

Probability Errors: Some Positive And Normative Implications For Tort And Contract Law, Eric A. Posner

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This paper examines the effect of tort rules on behavior if people are optimistic or insensitive relative to true probabilities. The paper shows that under certain conditions both strict liability and negligence cause levels of care that are higher than, or equal to, what is efficient (rather than lower). The paper also shows that under certain conditions strict liability and negligence cause the same level of activity among optimists (more than is efficient). Other implications for tort law are discussed, as are the sensitivity of the results to the choice of how to model probability errors. Implications for contract law, …

High-Resolution Magnetostratigraphy Of Speleothems From Snežna Jama, Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Slovenia, Pavel Bosák, Helena Hercman, Andrej Mihevc

KIP Articles

The Snežna jama Cave is located in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, NE Slovenia, in a Raduha Ridge. The cave is a huge, more or less horizontal fossil phreatic/epiphreatic conduit. It is penetrated by vertical shafts - invasion vadose (proglacial) caves. Close to the cave entrance, there is about 3 m high wall composed of speleothems - a complex sequence of flowstone with numerous breaks in deposition, six of them are principal. The lower part of the profile (about 85 cm) contains abundant terrigenous component (terra rossa-derived clay). Stalag- mites developed in several periods are completely buried by nearly horizontal younger sequences …

Evaluation Of Inspectra Uv Analyzer For Measuring Conventional Water And Wastewater Parameters, Lizette R. Chevalier, C. N. Irwin, J. N. Craddock Sep 2002

Evaluation Of Inspectra Uv Analyzer For Measuring Conventional Water And Wastewater Parameters, Lizette R. Chevalier, C. N. Irwin, J. N. Craddock

Publications

A relatively new analytical instrument for the measurement of BOD5, COD, TSS, TOC, nitrates and surfactants has been developed commercially. It is based on the use of ultraviolet spectrophotometry and a deterministic approach to analyze the sample’s spectrum by comparing it with a series of historical reference spectra. Using standard methods for the measurement of BOD5, TSS and TOC as true values, the use of this instrument was evaluated. The samples tested were obtained from both wastewater and water treatment facilities. Results indicate that the BOD5 measurement performed best. There was no correlation found for TSS or TOC.

Analysis Of A Campus-Wide Wireless Network, David Kotz, Kobby Essien Sep 2002

Analysis Of A Campus-Wide Wireless Network, David Kotz, Kobby Essien

Computer Science Technical Reports

Understanding usage patterns in wireless local-area networks (WLANs) is critical for those who develop, deploy, and manage WLAN technology, as well as those who develop systems and application software for wireless networks. This paper presents results from the largest and most comprehensive trace of network activity in a large, production wireless LAN. For eleven weeks we traced the activity of nearly two thousand users drawn from a general campus population, using a campus-wide network of 476 access points spread over 161 buildings. Our study expands on those done by Tang and Baker, with a significantly larger and broader population. We …

Bilateral Accidents With Intrinsically Interdependent Costs Of Precaution, Dhammika Dharmapala, Sandra A. Hoffmann Sep 2002

Bilateral Accidents With Intrinsically Interdependent Costs Of Precaution, Dhammika Dharmapala, Sandra A. Hoffmann

Economics Working Papers

The standard economic model of bilateral precaution postulates an interdependency between the care taken by injurers and victims that operates through the effects of each on the expected accident loss. This paper considers situations in which each party's precaution affects not only expected accident loss, but also directly affects the other party's cost of taking precaution. Generalizing the economic model of tort law in this way allows for a more complete analysis of when standard tort rules can and cannot induce optimal precaution. When this additional externality is introduced into a model of unilateral harm (where all accident losses are …

Cognitive Comparative Advantage And The Organization Of Work: Lessons From Herbert Simon's Vision Of The Future, Richard N. Langlois Sep 2002

Cognitive Comparative Advantage And The Organization Of Work: Lessons From Herbert Simon's Vision Of The Future, Richard N. Langlois

Economics Working Papers

In a marvelous but somewhat neglected paper, 'The Corporation: Will It Be Managed by Machines?' Herbert Simon articulated from the perspective of 1960 his vision of what we now call the New Economy the machine-aided system of production and management of the late twentieth century. Simon's analysis sprang from what I term the principle of cognitive comparative advantage: one has to understand the quite different cognitive structures of humans and machines (including computers) in order to explain and predict the tasks to which each will be most suited. Perhaps unlike Simon's better-known predictions about progress in artificial intelligence research, the …

Currency Depreciation And Korean Stock Market Performance During The Asian Financial Crisis, Wenshwo Fang, Stephen M. Miller Sep 2002

Currency Depreciation And Korean Stock Market Performance During The Asian Financial Crisis, Wenshwo Fang, Stephen M. Miller

Economics Working Papers

Structural shifts characterize the volatility of the Korean stock and foreign exchange markets during the 1997 Asian financial crisis. This paper employs an unrestricted bivariate GARCH-M model of stock market returns to investigate empirically the effects of daily currency depreciation on Korean stock market returns. The evidence shows that currency depreciation significantly affects stock market performance through three distinct channels: exchange rate depreciation adversely affects stock market returns, higher exchange rate depreciation volatility induces higher stock market returns, and exchange rate depreciation volatility raises stock market return volatility. The evidence suggests that small open stock markets are vulnerable to exchange …

On Modeling And Controlling The Effects Of Variable Labor Effort: A Theoretical Explanation Of The Truck System, William Alpert, John Stiver Sep 2002

On Modeling And Controlling The Effects Of Variable Labor Effort: A Theoretical Explanation Of The Truck System, William Alpert, John Stiver

Economics Working Papers

In most Industrial and Industrializing Countries, labor markets are characterized by employers offering packages of wage, non-wage, and working conditions to prospective workers. In return, workers offer to apply effort to tasks determined by employers. This paper attempts to examine these employer-employee contracts using a stockout avoidance model with employees providing variable labor effort.

Shirking And Motivation In Firms: Survey Evidence On Worker Attitudes, Lanse P. Minkler Sep 2002

Shirking And Motivation In Firms: Survey Evidence On Worker Attitudes, Lanse P. Minkler

Economics Working Papers

In an extensive national survey, 82.7% of the respondents report that they are very likely to keep an agreement to work hard if they agreed to, even if it was almost impossible for their employer to monitor them. Based on mean responses, the rank order of motivations in descending importance is: moral, intrinsic, peer-pressure, and positive incentives. Respondents also report that fairness considerations are important and that they are especially likely to keep agreements to do a good job with honest employers. Logit analysis indicates that increases in moral and intrinsic motivations increase the likelihood of keeping agreements to provide …

A Dynamic Stochastic Frontier Production Model With Time-Varying Efficiency, Evangelia Desli, Subhash C. Ray, Subal C. Kumbhakar Sep 2002

A Dynamic Stochastic Frontier Production Model With Time-Varying Efficiency, Evangelia Desli, Subhash C. Ray, Subal C. Kumbhakar

Economics Working Papers

In this paper we introduce technical efficiency via the intercept that evolve over time as a AR(1) process in a stochastic frontier (SF) framework in a panel data framework. Following are the distinguishing features of the model. First, the model is dynamic in nature. Second, it can separate technical inefficiency from fixed firm-specific effects which are not part of inefficiency. Third, the model allows one to estimate technical change separate from change in technical efficiency. We propose the ML method to estimate the parameters of the model. Finally, we derive expressions to calculate/predict technical inefficiency (efficiency).

One Vast Hospital, David Madden Sep 2002

One Vast Hospital, David Madden

Civil War Book Review

One vast hospital

That the Confederacy's Secretary of War, Judah P. Benjamin of New Orleans, was Jewish is an interesting, well-known fact. Almost equally well-known since 1866 is that, metaphorically, one of the Confederacy's most effective generals was Jewish. A childless widow, Phoebe Y....

Differential Test Performance In The American Educational System: The Impact Of Race And Gender, Stephen J. Finch, Harvey A. Farberman, Jordan Neus, Richard E. Adams, Deirdre Price-Baker Sep 2002

Differential Test Performance In The American Educational System: The Impact Of Race And Gender, Stephen J. Finch, Harvey A. Farberman, Jordan Neus, Richard E. Adams, Deirdre Price-Baker

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Contrary to Herrnstein and Murray (1994) who claim that racial groups have different cognitive endowments and that these best explain differential test score achievements, our regression analyses document that there is less improvement in test scores per year of education for African-Americans and women. That is, the observed group test score differences do not appear to be due to racial cognitive differences but rather to other factors associated with group-linked experiences in the educational system. We found that 666 of the subjects in the Herrnstein-Murray database had actual IQ scores derived from school records. Using these as independent controls for …

College Football Rankings And Market Efficiency, Ray C. Fair, John F. Oster Sep 2002

College Football Rankings And Market Efficiency, Ray C. Fair, John F. Oster

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The results in this paper show that various college football ranking systems have useful independent information for predicting the outcomes of games. Optimal weights for the systems are estimated, and the use of these weights produces a predictive system that is more accurate than any of the individual systems. The results also provide a fairly precise estimate of the size of the home field advantage. These results may be of interest to the Bowl Championship Series in choosing which teams to play in the national championship game. The results also show, however, that none of the systems, including the optimal …

Insensible Perspiration And Oily Vegetable Humor: An Eighteenth Century Controversy Over Vegetarianism, Ken Albala Sep 2002

Insensible Perspiration And Oily Vegetable Humor: An Eighteenth Century Controversy Over Vegetarianism, Ken Albala

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

Quack diets are nothing new. Nor have they always been easily dismissed. In eighteenth-century Italy, a virulent controversy arose over a meatless wonder diet. This controversy would eventually play itself out in the field of nutritional theory, as dietary writers crambled to incorporate the latest scientific findings into their recommendations.
