Prevalence And Characterization Of Non-O157 Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia Coli On Carcasses In Commercial Beef Cattle Processing Plants, Terrance M. Arthur, Genevieve A. Barkocy-Gallagher, Mildred Rivera-Betancourt, Mohammad Koohmaraie

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Beef carcass sponge samples collected from July to August 1999 at four large processing plants in the United States were surveyed for the presence of non-O157 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Twenty-eight (93%) of 30 single-source lots surveyed included at least one sample containing non-O157 STEC. Of 334 carcasses sampled prior to evisceration, 180 (54%) were found to harbor non-O157 STEC. Non-O157 STEC isolates were also recovered from 27 (8%) of 326 carcasses sampled after the application of antimicrobial interventions. Altogether, 361 non-O157 STEC isolates, comprising 41 different O serogroups, were recovered. O serogroups that previously have been associated with …

Zola(R) Energy: On The Film Adaptations Of Emile Zola's La Bete Humaine, Walter C. Metz Oct 2002

Zola(R) Energy: On The Film Adaptations Of Emile Zola's La Bete Humaine, Walter C. Metz

Publications

This essay reads the Fritz Lang film noir, Human Desire (1954) as an intertextual reworking of La Bete humaine (Jean Renoir, 1938), in turn an adaptation of Emile Zola's eponymous novel (1890). I argue that whereas Renoir's film worries about the impending World War II, Lang's grapples with the noir legacy of a post-war world devoid of hope. This traps Zola's novel in a middle ground: the novel is set on the brink of the French destruction in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871, but is written twenty years afterward.

The Paradox Of Auxiliary Rights: The Privilege Against Self-Incrimination And The Right To Keep And Bear Arms, Michael Steven Green Oct 2002

The Paradox Of Auxiliary Rights: The Privilege Against Self-Incrimination And The Right To Keep And Bear Arms, Michael Steven Green

Duke Law Journal

According to Locke's theory of the social contract, which was widely accepted by the Founders, political authority is limited by those natural moral rights that individuals reserve against the government. In this Article, I argue that Locke's theory generates paradoxical conclusions concerning the government's authority over civil disobedients, that is, people who resist the government because they believe it is violating reserved moral rights. If the government lacks the authority to compel the civil disobedient to abide by its laws, the result is anarchism: The limits on governmental authority are whatever each individual says they are. If the government has …

The Development Of A Multipurpose Trap (The Nzi) For Tsetse And Other Biting Flies, S. Mihok Oct 2002

The Development Of A Multipurpose Trap (The Nzi) For Tsetse And Other Biting Flies, S. Mihok

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

New trap designs for tsetse (Glossinidae), stable flies (Muscidae: Stomoxyinae), and horse flies (Tabanidae) were tested in Kenya to develop a multipurpose trap for biting flies. Many configurations and colour/fabric combinations were compared to a simplified, blue-black triangular trap to identify features of design and materials that result in equitable catches. New designs were tested against conventional traps, with a focus on Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. longipennis Corti, Stomoxys niger Macquart, and Atylotus agrestis (Wiedemann). A simple design based on minimal blue and black rectangular panels, for attraction and contrast, with a trap body consisting of an innovative configuration …

The Conceptual Model Of Peace Operations (Cmpo) As A Framework For Comparing National Doctrines For International Peacekeeping Operations, Paul R. Rickert

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This research generates a method for easy comparison of national military doctrines as they pertain to peacekeeping operations by using the Conceptual Model of Peace Operations (CMPO) as an organizational framework. Microsoft Excel is utilized as an interface as a means for individuals or organizations to compare individual national peacekeeping doctrines on an independent framework. This project also utilizes graphing techniques to allow users to view more generalized comparisons of doctrine so conclusions might be more readily drawn with regards to specific areas of coverage, areas of doctrine needing to be more fully or less extensively addressed, and the political …

The State of the Union and Recommendation Clauses of Article II, Section 3provide that the President "shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient. "Those thirty-one words envision the President as the lead active participant in the embryonic stages of the making of laws. Eight separate principles animate the President's legislative duties and powers before the presentment process. When the State of the Union and Recommendation Clauses are seen to have this textual and analytical subtlety, they reveal …

Rocking The Washington Monument: Subverting Capitalism: The Punk Rock Subculture Of Washington, D C, Mike Addabbo Oct 2002

Rocking The Washington Monument: Subverting Capitalism: The Punk Rock Subculture Of Washington, D C, Mike Addabbo

Southern Anthropologist

(Winning Entry 2002 SAS Student Paper Competition: Undergraduate) The punk subculture of Washington, D.C., proclaims a strong, anti-commercial, anti-consumerism, and anti-capitalism sentiment. Operating as a separate network of bands and listeners from the major record labels of the U.S., the subculture attempts to challenge the role of profit in musical production. The creation of CDs, T-shirts, and other commodities by the subculture suggests otherwise, but through its independent network of bands, labels, and venues, these commodities circulate at a lower cost than those within its parent culture. In emphasizing artistic credibility over profit, the ideals of the subculture attempt to …

The Relationship Of Ethnicity Ethnic Identity And Problem Type To Preferences For Counselor Race In College Students: A Survey Of African-American And European-American Students, Sara H. Bausch Oct 2002

The Relationship Of Ethnicity Ethnic Identity And Problem Type To Preferences For Counselor Race In College Students: A Survey Of African-American And European-American Students, Sara H. Bausch

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

African-American and European-American participants were surveyed to determine the relationship of ethnicity, ethnic identity, and type of presenting problem on preferences for counselor ethnicity. Participants indicated their preferences for counselor characteristics, including ethnicity, for personal and academic problems. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and regression techniques. The results indicated that African American participants prefer ethnically similar counselors and all participants with high ethnic identity prefer ethnically similar counselors. The results suggested that participants prefer different characteristics for different problems. Participants indicated more willingness to seek help for academic problems. Ethnicity was a significant predictor of preference for an …

Market Failures And The Evolution Of State Regulation Of Managed Care, Frank A. Sloan, Mark A. Hall Oct 2002

Market Failures And The Evolution Of State Regulation Of Managed Care, Frank A. Sloan, Mark A. Hall

Law and Contemporary Problems

Sloan and Hall reflect on whether the market defects identified explain why the managed care revolution has stalled and whether patient protection laws can help put managed care back on track. From a perspective of reliance on market forces to achieve socially desirable outcomes, the fundamental failure of managed care is the failure to produce competing systems of health care delivery that force competitive processes and consumer choice to focus on trade-offs between the cost and quality of care.

Dragon On Terrorism: Assessing China's Tactical Gains And Strategic Losses Post-September 11, Mohan Malik Dr. Oct 2002

Dragon On Terrorism: Assessing China's Tactical Gains And Strategic Losses Post-September 11, Mohan Malik Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The U.S. relationship with China and the global war on terrorism are the two most significant strategic challenges faced by the Bush administration. Both are vital and complex; the way the administration manages them will shape American security for many years. While there is a growing literature on both key strategic issues, little analysis has been done on the intersection of the two. This monograph fills the gap as the author assesses how the war on terrorism has affected China. He concludes that the war on terrorism radically altered the Asian strategic environment in ways that negated China's foreign policy …

Reid’S Foundation For The Primary/Secondary Quality Distinction, Jennifer Mckitrick Oct 2002

Reid’S Foundation For The Primary/Secondary Quality Distinction, Jennifer Mckitrick

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

Thomas Reid (1710-1796) offers an under-appreciated account of the primary/secondary quality distinction. He gives sound reasons for rejecting the views of Locke, Boyle, Galileo and others, and presents a better alternative, according to which the distinction is epistemic rather than metaphysical. Primary qualities, for Reid, are qualities whose intrinsic natures can be known through sensation. Secondary qualities, on the other hand, are unknown causes of sensations. Some may object that Reid’s view is internally inconsistent, or unacceptably relativistic. However, a deeper understanding shows that it is consistent, and relative only to normal humans. To acquire this deeper understanding, one must …

Impact Of Early Surgical Correction Of Curves In Paralytic Scoliosis, Stefan M. Knoeller, Ralf D. Stuecker Oct 2002

Impact Of Early Surgical Correction Of Curves In Paralytic Scoliosis, Stefan M. Knoeller, Ralf D. Stuecker

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this investigation was to investigate the advantages of early surgery in patients suffering from neuromuscular scoliosis. METHODS: Between January 1992 and January 1998, 20 patients with paralytic scoliosis, with an average age of 15 years, were treated surgically in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, University Hospital, Feiburg, Germany. The parameter investigations included correction of the scoliosis independent of preoperative curves, operation time independent of Cobb angles, complications and blood loss. Surgery included a dorsal semi rigid instrumentation with pedicle screws in the lumbo-sacral region and sublaminar wiring in the thoracic area. RESULTS: The preoperative scoliotic curve …

Mode Of Loosening Of Matt-Finished Femoral Stems In Primary Total Hip Replacement, Yaser M. Behairy, William H. Harris Oct 2002

Mode Of Loosening Of Matt-Finished Femoral Stems In Primary Total Hip Replacement, Yaser M. Behairy, William H. Harris

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Major advances have occurred in total hip replacement (THR) surgery aiming at minimizing or delaying loosening of the components. Currently, substantial controversy exists regarding the possible role of the surface finish of cemented femoral stems in the loosening process. Several authors have recently suggested that a roughened surface finish of the femoral component in cemented THR can predispose the implant to early loosening and subsequently severe osteolysis. The aim of this study was to evaluate both the incidence of, and the mode of loosening of the cemented femoral components in a large series of primary THR with matt-finished surface …

Linkage Analysis Of A Large Inbred Family With Congenital Megaloblastic Anemia, Jamil R. Al-Alami, Marwan K. Tayeh, Mahmoud Y. Al-Sheyyab, Hatem I. El-Shanti

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Megaloblastic anemia during infancy and early childhood often reflects a hereditary disorder of cobalamin9s absorption, transport, or intracellular metabolism. There are 3 well defined autosomal recessive syndromes manifesting with megaloblastic anemia due to defects in cobalamin absorption or transport, namely congenital pernicious anemia, Imerslund-Grasbeck syndrome and Transcobalamin II deficiency. The genes responsible for the 3 disorders are gene intrinsic factor (GIF), MGA1 and TCN2, as well as the gene for Transcobalamin I, TCN1 are mapped or cloned, or both. METHODS: We describe the clinical picture of 7 patients from 3 sibships, belong to one large inbred family who presented …
