Exercise Behavior In Older Adults: Processes Of Change, Andrea Mainardi

Open Access Master's Theses

Despite the significant health and quality of life benefits of exercise, more than 40% of the older adult population in America do not participate in any dedicated physical activity. As the number of older adults grows, it becomes increasingly important to meet the public health challenge to help seniors adopt and maintain exercise behavior in order enhance the overall well being of this population. The purpose of this study is to qualitatively explore the applicability of the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change with respect to exercise adoption and maintenance among older adults and to identify the processes of change used …

The Cellular Divide: A Comparative Analysis Of Mobile Phone Usage In Spain And The United States, Deborah J. Slezak '02 Jan 2002

The Cellular Divide: A Comparative Analysis Of Mobile Phone Usage In Spain And The United States, Deborah J. Slezak '02

Honors Projects

The usage of mobile phones has dramatically increased in the past decade, narrowing the boundaries of size, space, and time. It is this "death of distance" that will be the single most important economic force shaping all of society over the next half century. The economic prosperity of the United States has contributed to the increase in this "luxury" telecommunication device, but how can the rapid increase in European countries with lower per capita incomes such as Spain be explained? The purpose of this paper is to examine mobile phone usage and penetration rates in the United States compared to …

Ethics Counsel's Role In Combating The 'Ostrich' Tendency, Susan Saab Fortney Jan 2002

Ethics Counsel's Role In Combating The 'Ostrich' Tendency, Susan Saab Fortney

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

To illustrate the importance of ethics advisors playing an active role in building a law firm's ethical infrastructure, this article focuses on ethics problems related to hourly billing. Ethics experts who have studied hourly billing recognize attorneys' reluctance to report billing misconduct, In the book, THE HONEST HOUR, Professor William G. Ross refers to the inclination of attorneys to close their eyes when they suspect billing irregularities. Professor Lisa G. Lerman made a similar observation in noting that firm attorneys who share income may "turn a blind eye to misconduct" by another firm attorney.' Both Professors Lerman and Ross recommend …

Digital Millennium Copyright Act: Can It Take Down Internet Infringers?, David L. Clark Jan 2002

Digital Millennium Copyright Act: Can It Take Down Internet Infringers?, David L. Clark

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

In response to the growing digital age, Congress enacted the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA") on October 28, 1998. Unlike traditional copyright statutes, the DMCA does not address the act of infringement but instead focuses on the technology that makes infringement easier. Copyright holders have begun to develop encryption technology to prevent unauthorized use of their works, and the DMCA assists those efforts by prohibiting any person from circumventing those security provisions or selling decryption devices. The DMCA also encourages Internet Service Providers ("ISPs") to disable websites that are accused of copyright infringement; it protects the ISPs with a safe …

Gain-Bandwidth Characteristics Of Thin Avalanche Photodiodes, Majeed M. Hayat, Oh-Hyun Kwon, Yi Pan, Paul P. Sotirelis, Joe C. Campbell, Bahaa E.A. Saleh, Malvin Carl Teich Jan 2002

Gain-Bandwidth Characteristics Of Thin Avalanche Photodiodes, Majeed M. Hayat, Oh-Hyun Kwon, Yi Pan, Paul P. Sotirelis, Joe C. Campbell, Bahaa E.A. Saleh, Malvin Carl Teich

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The frequency-response characteristics of avalanche photodiodes (APDs) with thin multiplication layers are investigated by means of a recurrence technique that incorporates the history dependence of ionization coefficients. In addition, to characterize the autocorrelation function of the impulse response, new recurrence equations are derived and solved using a parallel computer. The mean frequency response and the gain-bandwidth product are computed and a simple model for the dependence of the gain-bandwidth product on the multiplication-layer width is set forth for GaAs, InP, Al/sub 0.2/Ga/sub 0.8/As, and In/sub 0.52/Al/sub 0.48/As APDs. It is shown that the dead-space effect leads to a reduction (up …

Maximum-Likelihood Image Estimation Using Photon-Correlated Beams, Majeed M. Hayat, Muhammad Sajjad Abdullah, Adel Joobeur, Bahaa E.A. Saleh Jan 2002

Maximum-Likelihood Image Estimation Using Photon-Correlated Beams, Majeed M. Hayat, Muhammad Sajjad Abdullah, Adel Joobeur, Bahaa E.A. Saleh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A theory is presented addressing the fundamental limits of image estimation in a setup that uses two photon-correlated beams. These beams have the property that their photon arrivals, as a point process, are ideally synchronized in time and space. The true image represents the spatial distribution of the optical transmittance (or reflectance) of an object. In this setup, one beam is used to probe the image while the other is used as a reference providing additional information on the actual number of photons impinging on the object. This additional information is exploited to reduce the effect of quantum noise associated …

Problems In Defining And Controlling The Unauthorized Practice Of Law, Linda Galler Jan 2002

Problems In Defining And Controlling The Unauthorized Practice Of Law, Linda Galler

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

A lively debate is taking place within the states on the question whether lawyers should be permitted to practice law in professional services organizations that provide both legal and nonlegal services and that are owned, in whole or in part, by nonlawyers. At this time, the states are divided; some endorse the notion of multidisciplinary practice (MDP) while others do not. At its August 2000 meeting, the American Bar Association (ABA) House of Delegates rejected a proposal to permit lawyers practicing in MDPs to render legal services. In so doing, the House urged the states to enforce their laws prohibiting …

The Unchanging Face Of Legal Malpractice: How The "Captured" Regulators Of The Bar Protect Attorneys, Lawrence W. Kessler Jan 2002

The Unchanging Face Of Legal Malpractice: How The "Captured" Regulators Of The Bar Protect Attorneys, Lawrence W. Kessler

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Over the last century the. legal malpractice tort has remained constant while the rest of the legal world of negligence has been modified to increase duties and influence conduct to conform to our modern sense of fairness. In a century in which consumers of products have been catapulted out of the legal dungeon of "no privity" to the shining sea of strict product liability, in which consumers of medical services have been protected by the creation of an entirely new tort of informed consent, and in which trespassers have been given protections against dangerous conditions, only the consumers of legal …

Development Of An Introductory Experimental/Adventure Education Course For Exercise Science Majors At Southern Connecticut State University, Patricia Ann Payne Jan 2002

Development Of An Introductory Experimental/Adventure Education Course For Exercise Science Majors At Southern Connecticut State University, Patricia Ann Payne

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

As part of the self-study process, core courses and field experiences of the Exercise Science Teacher Education Preparation Program (Exstep) were closely evaluated for their effectiveness in preparing pre-service teachers for student teaching and future employment. The problem was a lack of effective facilitation methods by the pre-service teachers in the Exstep program especially in the area of adult education principles, which include the affective domain of teaching and learning (SCSU Exstep self-study, 2000). An introductory course in experiential/adventure education would facilitate the principles of adult education, thereby enhancing students understanding of"affective" teaching methodologies, as well as philosophies, by giving …

Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Training Program Using In-Service Training And A Computer-Assisted Instruction Program For The 344th Air Refueling Squadron, Mark David Lilly

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Over the past several years, the Air Force has realized a decline in the experience levels of its workforce. This decline, in conjunction with the influx of replacement personnel, has resulted in training gaps within the ranks of the United States Air Force.

The problem is that the 344th Air Refueling Squadron, as a training oriented organization, has realized gaps in its aircrew experience levels based on the continual personnel turnover of its aircrew workforce. The purpose of this project was to develop, implement and evaluate an inservice training program and a computer-assisted instruction software program for aircrew members of …

Fast, Cheap, And Out Of Control: Lessons From The Icann Dispute Resolution Process, Elizabeth G. Thornburg

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

The Internet is constantly expanding, both as a means of communication and as a means of commerce. As its contacts among people and businesses expand, more and more disputes will arise and will need resolution. These disputes will evolve both from business-to-consumer transactions and from business-to-business transactions. Some of the claims will include breach of contract, breach of warranty, and even fraud. Others will concern intellectualproperty rights such as trademarks, copyrights, and patents. Still others will involve competition law, raising issues of antitrust, trade disparagement, and other claims of unfair competition. Alleging defamation, invasion of privacy and emotional distress, some …

Telecommunications Law: Open Access To Cable Broadband Transmission: At&T Corp. V. City Of Portland, 216 F.3d 871 (9th Cir. 2000), Deborah L. Lively

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

In AT&T Corp. v. City of Portland, the Ninth Circuit considered whether a local cable franchising authority could condition the transfer of a cable franchise upon the cable operator's grant of unrestricted access to its cable broadband transmission facilities.

In 1998, AT&T - the nation's largest long-distance telephone provider - proposed a merger with Telecommunications, Inc. ("TCI"), which was among the nation's largest cable-television operators. In the merger, AT&T received access to TCI's cable broadband transmission system as a conduit for AT&T's "@Home" Internet service. A cable broadband system provides Internet access at much faster speeds than through typical modem …

Hyperlinks To And From Commercial Websites, Christopher J. Volkmer

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

E-commerce, through the use of a website, is a business reality. This is true for companies of any size, in any location, selling any kind of product or service. Doing business over the Internet is part of what all companies must do to compete; with this new form of business, however, comes new legal issues. As e-commerce develops, it is important for business owners to keep advancing their knowledge in order to manage the risks that come with new opportunities.

Hyperlinks are basic building blocks used to connect the sites of the World Wide Web, and their use has significant …

Traditional Free-Speech Law: Does It Apply On The Internet?, A. John Harper Iii Jan 2002

Traditional Free-Speech Law: Does It Apply On The Internet?, A. John Harper Iii

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

The First Amendment states that Congress "shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press." But as Oliver Wendell Holmes recognized, the First Amendment "obviously was not intended to give immunity for every possible use of language." Accordingly, the Supreme Court's free-speech jurisprudence has traditionally been one of line drawing - distinguishing protected from unprotected speech by evaluating its content in light of the medium through which it is expressed. In terms of content, there are generally three categories of speech: "(1) speech that everyone has a right to (political speech, speech about …

Packet Sniffers And Privacy: Why The No-Suspicion-Required Standard In The Usa Patriot Act Is Unconstitutional, Robert Berkowitz Jan 2002

Packet Sniffers And Privacy: Why The No-Suspicion-Required Standard In The Usa Patriot Act Is Unconstitutional, Robert Berkowitz

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

The legal standards for electronic surveillance, like the underlying technologies themselves, are constantly evolving. Originally aimed at analog telephones with landlines, the law has had to develop in order to deal with an expanding array of electronic communications, most recently the Internet. The challenge is a double one: statutes allowing surveillance must balance law enforcement's need for information with the privacy rights of the subjects of surveillance and the public at large. The USA Patriot Act, passed in the wake of the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., is the most recent attempt to strike this balance. …

Disappearing Youth In American Politics? Campus, Community, And Political Participation By Undergraduate Students, Stephanie Reinhart '02 Jan 2002

Disappearing Youth In American Politics? Campus, Community, And Political Participation By Undergraduate Students, Stephanie Reinhart '02

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

Public participation in American politics has long been discussed as deficient at best, falling far short of democracy’s goal of an enlightened and participatory citizenry. In no age group is this more apparent than America’s young adults, particularly those in their early years of voting eligibility. This segment of the population has been repeatedly criticized for their disinterest and lack of involvement in politics, primarily because only a small number of young adults vote in elections. In fact, several researchers argue that young adults are less likely to participate in politics than ever before (Astin, Parrott, Korn, and Sax 1997; …

The Effects Of A Parent-Child Communication Activity On The Worries Of Siblings Of Children With Autism, Sara M. Irwin '02 Jan 2002

The Effects Of A Parent-Child Communication Activity On The Worries Of Siblings Of Children With Autism, Sara M. Irwin '02

Honors Projects

This study was designed to obtain objective results about the effects of two different parent-child activities on the siblings of children with autism. Participants were eighteen 6-13 year-old siblings of children with autism and their parents. One group of parent-child pairs completed a workbook focused on autism-specific worries, while another group of parent-child pairs played board games together. The children in each group completed a questionnaire about their autism-related worries at the end of the activity. Results demonstrated that the workbook was useful in making parents more aware of specific worries that their children have as shown by a strong …

Evaluating The Collaborative Efforts Of Teachers And Parents Of Children With Autism Spectrum, Lindsey Vacco '02 Jan 2002

Evaluating The Collaborative Efforts Of Teachers And Parents Of Children With Autism Spectrum, Lindsey Vacco '02

Honors Projects

Educators have emphasized the importance of parent involvement in the educational process for decades. The definitions of parent involvement, however, have changed over time with a current emphasis on genuine parent-school collaboration where parents are seen as partners in their child's education. Such collaboration is especially crucial when the children have special needs, such as those on the autism spectrum. Autism spectrum disorders pose unique challenges to the home-school relationship in part due to the child's communication and social impairments. This study is part of a larger, ongoing study examining home-school relationships between parents and teachers of children with autism …

Barriers To Creativity In The Conceptual Phase Of Engineering Design : Perceptions Of Designers At Rolls Royce Aerospace (Bristol) In New Projects Engineering, Rachel Amanda Jane Carkett

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Anecdotal evidence from experienced engineers suggest that barriers to creativity are often due to the limitations of current technology, methods and support systems (Baird, Moore, & Jagodzinski, 2000). The aim of this research was to explore what the perceived barriers to creativity are and how they are circumvented by design engineers working in New Projects Engineering (NPE), Rolls-Royce Aerospace (Bristol). Semi-structured interviews with four employees working in engineering design comprised a Scoping Study. This provided a general overview of the major issues perceived by the design engineers regarding barriers to creativity and resulted in six themes being identified. These themes …

Factors For Effective Learning Groups In Face-To-Face And Virtual Environments, Charles R. Graham Jan 2002

Factors For Effective Learning Groups In Face-To-Face And Virtual Environments, Charles R. Graham

Faculty Publications

Group work has been a powerful instructional method used in face-to-face learning environments. To date, group work has not reached the same prominence in distance learning environments where there is a strong emphasis on independent or individualistic learning. This may be due in part to the perceived difficulty of engaging students in working together at a distance, as well as a general lack of knowledge about the factors that contribute to effective virtual group work. This paper reviews the literature related to creating effective learning groups in face-to-face and virtual environments. Research from the following four areas was used: cooperative …

Parental Psychological Control: Implications For Childhood Physical And Relational Aggression, David A. Nelson, Nicki R. Crick

Faculty Publications

Children who experience difficulties with peers also tend to experience both concurrent social–psychological difficulties and long-term negative developmental outcomes. Specifically, a significant amount of research has identified peer rejection and isolation as significant precursors to academic troubles and socially deviant behavior (DeRosier, Kupersmidt, & Patterson, 1994; Kupersmidt, Coie, & Dodge, 1990; Parker & Asher, 1987; Parker, Rubin, Price, & DeRosier, 1995). Substantial research and intervention efforts have consequently been dedicated to an understanding of the problem behaviors commonly identified as correlates or antecedents of peer rejection. Childhood aggression is one of the most significant predictors of peer rejection, and has …

The Adaptive Advantage Of Symbolic Theft Over Sensorimotor Toil: Grounding Language In Perceptual Categories, A Cangelosi, S Harnad

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Using neural nets to simulate learning and the genetic algorithm to simulate evolution in a toy world of mushrooms and mushroom-foragers, we place two ways of acquiring categories into direct competition with one another: In (1) "sensorimotor toil,” new categories are acquired through real-time, feedbackcorrected, trial and error experience in sorting them. In (2) "symbolic theft,” new categories are acquired by hearsay from propositions – boolean combinations of symbols describing them. In competition, symbolic theft always beats sensorimotor toil. We hypothesize that this is the basis of the adaptive advantage of language. Entry-level categories must still be learned by toil, …

A Rawlsian Approach To Solving The Problem Of Genetic Discrimination In Toxic Workplaces, Robert A. Bohrer Jan 2002

A Rawlsian Approach To Solving The Problem Of Genetic Discrimination In Toxic Workplaces, Robert A. Bohrer

San Diego Law Review

The Human Genome Project (HGP) may well be the beginning of a technological leap that rivals the advent of the Industrial Age.2 The principal goal of the project is to map and fully sequence3

the twenty- four chromosomes that contain the complete genetic contents of a

normal human cell. The human genome consists of twenty-two pairs of chromosomes plus the X and Y chromosomes that determine gender.4 As would be expected for such a technologically adventurous undertaking, the HGP has been accompanied by a substantial outpouring of concern about the ethical, legal, and social issues that will arise from this …
