A Model-Based Definition Of The Generic Remanufacturing Business Process, Winifred Ijomah Jan 2002

A Model-Based Definition Of The Generic Remanufacturing Business Process, Winifred Ijomah

Plymouth Business School Theses

Remanufacturing is a process of bringing used products to a "like-new" functional state by rebuilding and replacing their component parts. The practice has a low profile in world economies, however, studies indicate that it obtains cost savings in the region of 20% to 80%, as well as quality similar to that of an equivalent "new" product. In fact, in excess of 73,000 firms are engaged in some sort of remanufacturing in the United States alone. The key remanufacturing issues are the ambiguity in its definition and the scarcity of its analytic models. The objective of the research was to address …

Patterns Of Phamaceutical Advertising To Physicians: An Exploratory Content Analysis Of Printed Pharmaceutical Ads Targeted To Pediatricians, Paul Tebbey

Theses

A content analysis of pharmaceutical product ads targeted toward pediatricians in the professional media was conducted to determine the extent to which they were informative as well as the quantity and types of information presented. The content analysis model selected was based on previously published and widely implemented standards that have been documented to support research propositions. The study analyzed 67 separate products ads that were published in pediatrician-targeted journals during the first half of 2002. The results indicate that each pharmaceutical product ad contains an abundance of information (average = 5.1 cues) that may help in educating and Morming …

Making A Business Case For Integrating Multidimensional Sustainability In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Thea Jung Jan 2002

Making A Business Case For Integrating Multidimensional Sustainability In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Thea Jung

Theses

To grow their bottom lines, companies invest in business value drivers. This thesis examined whether multidimensional sustainability performance could be one of those drivers in the pharmaceutical industry. There are currently very few (if any) mandatory requirements for integrating multidimensional sustainability. Nor are there standardized methods of integrating, measuring, or communicating multidimensional sustainability. This thesis reviewed, compared, and contrasted (also known as benchmarking) voluntary sustainability initiatives and pharmaceutical company sustainability initiatives. The results were as follows: 1) the concept of multidimensional sustainability is generally understood; 2) integrating multidimensional sustainability is the morally and ethically correct action for pharmaceutical companies to …

The United States Of America And The International Criminal Court, Diane Marie Amann, M.N.S. Sellers Jan 2002

The United States Of America And The International Criminal Court, Diane Marie Amann, M.N.S. Sellers

Scholarly Works

The United States of America has not ratified the treaty establishing a permanent international criminal court, and it is highly un-likely to do so. This is not simply a question of delay caused by cumbersome ratification procedures; rather, it reflects deep-seated opposition by the U.S. executive branch and by many members of Congress. The United States voted against the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court when it was adopted on July 17, 1998, at the U.N. Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries. President William J. Clinton approved signature of the statute on the last day that a state, by signing, could …

Clinton's Foreign Policy And The Politics Of Intervention: Cases Of Ethnic Cleansing And Democratic Governance, Daneta G. Billau Jan 2002

Clinton's Foreign Policy And The Politics Of Intervention: Cases Of Ethnic Cleansing And Democratic Governance, Daneta G. Billau

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines the sources of U.S. President Bill Clinton's foreign policy, with special attention to understudied political elements of intervention. The basis of this study is the Clinton Doctrine, in which Clinton opposed ethnic cleansing, and supported democratic governance worldwide. The primary research question asks to what extent and why was there a variation in Clinton's application of his own doctrine in the specific cases of Rwanda in 1994, Haiti in 1994, and East Timor in 1999. To address this question, the following five hypotheses are posited:

H1: The more vital interests are at stake, and the closer the …

The Challenge Of Policing Immigrant Communities, Benjamin J. Goold Jan 2002

The Challenge Of Policing Immigrant Communities, Benjamin J. Goold

All Faculty Publications

Providing effective policing for immigrant communities is one of the greatest challenges facing law enforcement agencies in the United States today. Despite the fact that police departments across the country have worked hard to improve their relations with immigrant communities in recent years, research suggests that many immigrants continue to encounter considerable difficulties in their dealings with the police and the criminal justice system in general. Language barriers, cultural differences, and a lack of familiarity with the US legal system, are all factors that can prevent immigrants from gaining access to justice or taking advantage of important criminal justice services. …

What Do We Do When We Do Law And Popular Culture, Jessica Silbey Jan 2002

What Do We Do When We Do Law And Popular Culture, Jessica Silbey

Faculty Scholarship

"What We Do When We Do Law and Popular Culture" establishes a theoretical framework for analyzing legal popular culture, taking as its point of departure Richard Sherwin's book "When Law Goes Pop." The article stresses what Professor Silbey considers to be three major stumbling blocks in the growing interdiscipline of law and popular culture. She argues that if we are to advance our understanding of the relationship between law and popular culture, we must follow at least three simple charges: (1) demarcate our beginning concepts, such as law or culture, so that amidst the vast phenomena that may be called …

Conceptualizing Constitutional Litigation As Anti-Government Expression: A Speech-Centered Theory Of Court Access, Robert L. Tsai Jan 2002

Conceptualizing Constitutional Litigation As Anti-Government Expression: A Speech-Centered Theory Of Court Access, Robert L. Tsai

Faculty Scholarship

This Article proposes a speech-based right of court access. First, it finds the traditional due process approach to be analytically incoherent and of limited practical value. Second, it contends that history, constitutional structure, and theory all support conceiving of the right of access as the modern analogue to the right to petition government for redress. Third, the Article explores the ways in which the civil rights plaintiff's lawsuit tracks the behavior of the traditional dissident. Fourth, by way of a case study, the essay argues that recent restrictions - notably, a congressional limitation on the amount of fees counsel for …

Framing The Public Square, Jay D. Wexler Jan 2002

Framing The Public Square, Jay D. Wexler

Faculty Scholarship

For at least the past decade or so, law-and-religion scholars have vigorously debated the issue of whether it is proper for American citizens to rely on religious reasons when talking about and reaching decisions on issues of public concern, including law. Those who argue that religion should be kept out of such decisionmaking and discourse contend that reliance on religious reasons: (1) violates principles of separation of church and state, (2) unfairly excludes nonbelievers from meaningful participation in public discourse, (3) creates unacceptable divisiveness, and (4) risks the domination of Christian beliefs in public discourse to the detriment of religious …

Transracial Adoption (Tra) And The Development Of Ethnoracial Identity, Mairi Mckenna Jan 2002

Transracial Adoption (Tra) And The Development Of Ethnoracial Identity, Mairi Mckenna

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Research on the experience of transracial adoption and the development of identity has indicated that supports for this process are required. Research that has not named transracial adoption as negatively impacting on identity has also recommended these kinds of family supports. There has, however, been a disquieting absence of such support programs. It is for these reasons that I have set out to start the process of identifying the best practices for such supports and begin the process of creating such a program. The methodology is influenced by a number of different theories: participatory action research (PAR), needs assessment, capacity …

Mechanical Response Of Nets Of Graphical Objects, Rakesh Kumar Bajaj Jan 2002

Mechanical Response Of Nets Of Graphical Objects, Rakesh Kumar Bajaj

Masters Theses

"This research produces networks of graphical objects that respond to human manipulation in a fashion that would be deemed physically reasonable. That is, a graphical network is given a mechanics-like behavior in the presence of the human interaction. In this approach, nonlinear models replace commonly used linear models to mimic physical reality better. Software solutions are provided via a class library useful for such interactive visual modeling"--Abstract, page iii.

Substituting Mediation For Arbitration: The Growing Market For Evaluative Mediation, And What It Means For The Adr Field, Robert A. Baruch Bush Jan 2002

Substituting Mediation For Arbitration: The Growing Market For Evaluative Mediation, And What It Means For The Adr Field, Robert A. Baruch Bush

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The past decade has seen significant expansion in the acceptance and use of mediation as a process for handling disputes. That expansion has been particularly marked in the legal and business sectors. Indeed, old hands in the ADR field observe that mediation has begun to replace arbitration as the "process of choice" in the ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) "market," including institutional users like courts and major private consumers of ADR like businesses. All this is seen by some as part of the "mainstreaming" of mediation discussed by Joseph Folger's lead article in this Symposium. The primary question examined in this …

Using Authentic Learning To Teach Basic Technology Skills, Steven Burken Jan 2002

Using Authentic Learning To Teach Basic Technology Skills, Steven Burken

Graduate Research Papers

During the past decade, most school districts have been required to write technology plans that have included the goal that students will become technologically literate. Teachers and administrators have been challenged to teach technology skills that will help student solve problems in the work place. What has been commonplace is for schools to offer courses or units in which students acquire skills without applying them to real world problems. This paper takes a look at the literature and research surrounding the use of technology, and the learning of technology skills, in the framework of authentic learning.

Starting Over: A Tentative Theory Exploring The Effects Of Past Relationships On Postbereavement Remarried Couples, Andrew Scott Brimhall, Michelle Engblom-Deglmann

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

Using grounded theory methodology 24 participants were asked to discuss how the death of a previous spouse, either theirs or their partner’s, was currently affecting their second marriage. Participants were interviewed individually and as a couple. The central category was memories of the deceased spouse. Six additional categories emerged from the data: past spouse on pedestal, current/past comparison, insecurity of current spouse, curiosity about past spouse/relationship, partner’s response to curiosity, and impact on the current relationship. Existing literature, auditors, and participant feedback were all used to validate the results. Expanding on a tentative theory (Brimhall, Wampler, & Kimball, 2008), provisional …
