Wv Works…Does It? An Examination Of Post-Welfare Hardship In West Virginia, Elizabeth Carter Mcgaha Jan 2002

Wv Works…Does It? An Examination Of Post-Welfare Hardship In West Virginia, Elizabeth Carter Mcgaha

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the six years since the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) of 1996 was signed into law, there has been a lot of talk about the large numbers of people who have left the welfare rolls during this time, but little has been said about whether or not those who have left have done so successfully. In 1999, a research team from West Virginia University (WVU) conducted a random statewide study of leavers in West Virginia, which examines the hardship experienced by former recipients since leaving the program, such as, the inability to pay for food, medical …

Developmental Versus Prescriptive Advising: An Investigation Of Advising Delivery At A Major University., Kristi Doniel Wood Jan 2002

Developmental Versus Prescriptive Advising: An Investigation Of Advising Delivery At A Major University., Kristi Doniel Wood

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Academic advising is an essential connection between student and university. Two types of advising, prescriptive and developmental, are examined in relation to the level of advising (pre-major versus major) and type of advisor (full time advisors or parttime graduate student advisors for pre-majors, and faculty or full-time department advisors for majors) in four academic areas selected for contrast in advising approaches at a large land grant institution. Questionnaires were developed, piloted, finalized, and administered to select upper division students and their pre-major and major advisors concerning the types of advising practiced and student perceptions of each. Results showed that full-time …

Participants' Beliefs About Educational Risk And Resilience In Energy Express, A Summer Intervention Program For West Virginia's Elementary Schoolchildren, Lynn G. Mcmullen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Energy Express is a six-week summer program to promote the school success of elementary school children living in rural and low-income communities of West Virginia. Throughout the course of the program, college student AmeriCorps members provide literacy, art, and recreation activities for multiage groups of 5 to 8 children under the direction of a site coordinator, most often a local education professional. The purpose of this study was to describe the beliefs of Energy Express participants about educational risks faced by West Virginia schoolchildren, and to examine the effects of those beliefs on daily program decisions and interactions with children. …

Compositional Perspectives On The Exchange Of Muna Slate Wares In The Late And Terminal Classic Northern Maya Lowlands, Christopher M. Gunn Jan 2002

Compositional Perspectives On The Exchange Of Muna Slate Wares In The Late And Terminal Classic Northern Maya Lowlands, Christopher M. Gunn

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This thesis presents the results of petrographic point counting analyses of Muna Slate ware, thepredominant slipped ceramic ware in the Northern Maya Lowlands during the Late and TerminalClassic Periods (600-1000 A.D.) of Maya prehistory. Recently, it was hypothesized that MunaSlate wares were centrally produced and distributed from the Puuc Hills site of Sayil (Smyth andDore 1994; Smyth et al. 1995). Given that Muna Slate wares may be considered utilitariansubsistence items (sensu Brumfiel and Earle 1987), this suggestion runs counter to severalarguments that ancient Maya utilitarian ceramics production is associated with outlyingcommunities and that their distribution is localized. In the research …

Coarse Orange Pottery Exchange In Southern Veracruz: A Compositional Perspective On Centralized Craft Production And Exchange In The Classic Period, Wesley Durrell Stoner

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This research seeks to elucidate the role of relatively large-scale ceramic productionindustries located at the Classic period center of Matacapan in the Sierra de los Tuxtlas, SouthernVeracruz, Mexico. Arnold et al. (1993) have suggested that the specialized production atComoapan, the largest production locality at Matacapan, was oriented toward supplying theregion with ceramics. This production locality overwhelmingly specialized in manufacturingone standardized ware, Coarse Orange, into necked and neckless jars, which are found in manyparts of the region. The compositional techniques of instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) andpetrography were employed to investigate the distribution of this ware. Control groups weresampled from known production …

On Making Anti-Essentialist And Social Constructionist Arguments In Courts, Suzanne B. Goldberg Jan 2002

On Making Anti-Essentialist And Social Constructionist Arguments In Courts, Suzanne B. Goldberg

Faculty Scholarship

One of my most intense disagreements with another lawyer during nearly a decade of lesbian and gay rights litigation concerned social constructionism. The lawyer (a law professor, if truth be told) wanted to argue in an amicus brief to the United States Supreme Court that sexual orientation, like race, was a social constructed category. He reasoned that since the Court had condemned race discrimination even while recognizing the "socio-political, rather than biological" nature of race, it would similarly be willing to invalidate a measure discriminating against lesbians, gay men and bisexuals, even while recognizing the socially constructed nature of sexual …

Identification And Characterization Of Contact Sites Between Human Chorionic Gonadotropin And The Amino Terminal Region Of The Luteinizing Hormone/Choriogonadotropin Receptor, Rebecca Mccaffrey Jan 2002

Identification And Characterization Of Contact Sites Between Human Chorionic Gonadotropin And The Amino Terminal Region Of The Luteinizing Hormone/Choriogonadotropin Receptor, Rebecca Mccaffrey

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The luteinizing hormone / choriogonadotropin receptor (LH/CG-R) is a member of theG protein-coupled receptor family. The LH/CG-R has seven transmembrane helices, threeexoloops, three cytoloops, a C-terminal tail, and an extensive N-terminal exodomain. Theexodomain is capable of binding hormone with high affinity without hormone action. Previousstudies have shown that the amino-terminal region of the LH/CG receptor contacts both subunitsof human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). In particular, three residues (Leu20, Cys22, and Gly24)were found to be crucial for hormone binding. In this thesis work, benzoylphenylalanine (Bpa),a photoactivatable reagent, was used to continue investigating the interactions of the N-terminalregion of the LH/CG-R with hCG. …

The Effects Of Human Capital, Social Capital, And The Ethnic Enclave Economy On The Earnings Of Immigrants (The Case Of The Mariel Cuban Émigrés), Todd Macegan West Jan 2002

The Effects Of Human Capital, Social Capital, And The Ethnic Enclave Economy On The Earnings Of Immigrants (The Case Of The Mariel Cuban Émigrés), Todd Macegan West

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

This thesis analyzes the extent to which an enclave economy affects the earnings of immigrants compared to that of human and social capital. Ordinal Least Squares (OLS) multiple regressions are used to compare the degree of effects of independent variables on earnings: the first equation is the baseline model for the enclave economy, the second incorporates human capital, and the third incorporates social capital. The dependent variable is monthly earnings. The independent variables include (1) a set of control variables, (2) the primary and enclave labor-markets, and (3) human and social capital characteristics. Findings show that an enclave economy has …

Croatan Indians In Bulloch County, Malinda Maynor

Bulloch County Historical Society Publications

A Master’s thesis written by Malinda Maynor on Croatan, or Lumbee, Indians in Bulloch County and the ways in which they maintained their identity after leaving Robeson County, North Carolina.

Abstract:

In 1890, Croatan Indian men and women, now called Lumbees, began leaving Robeson County, North Carolina to work in turpentine camps in Bulloch County, Georgia. There a Croatan settlement emerged that re-created many features of their North Carolina home. In this period, Georgia, and the South as a whole, legally encoded racial segregation and threatened to force Bulloch County Croatans into a black or white identity. But rather than …

Organizational Climate And Commitment: A Case Study Of An Urban Nonprofit Organization, William Sawyer Grant Jan 2002

Organizational Climate And Commitment: A Case Study Of An Urban Nonprofit Organization, William Sawyer Grant

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management

This qualitative study investigates the relationship between the two constructs: Organizational Climate and Organizational Commitment.

Litwin and Stringer (1968) suggested that a molar model is needed to explain employee behavior and motivation. Climate was proposed as this molar construct. Research concerning Organizational Climate resulted in multiple definitions and little consensus concerning the number and use of multiple dimensions of this construct. The almost exclusive use of survey methods coupled with methodological confusion with Organizational Culture created difficulty with the use of this important construct.

Organizational Commitment research resulted in a number of competing definitions. Research by Meyer and Allen (1997) …

The Greatest Problem With Which The Library Is Confronted: A Survey Of Academic Library Outreach To The Freshman Course, Cindy Pierard, Kathryn A. Graves

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The Freshman Year Experience movement has created an excellent opportunity for academic library outreach. Its values, which include collaboration among various campus units charged with supporting student success and a focus on student mastery of key academic skills, correspond well with the objective of many college and university libraries: to become a more central part of the institution's educational mission. This chapter provides a discussion of academic library outreach to one of the movement's most significant components, the freshman course. The aim is to provide an overview of historic and contemporary trends in postsecondary freshman programming and corresponding library outreach …

Cultural Scripts Of Parental Intervention In Conflict, Kristina L. Mcdonald '02 Jan 2002

Cultural Scripts Of Parental Intervention In Conflict, Kristina L. Mcdonald '02

Honors Projects

Parents frequently intervene in the conflicts that children experience with other peers. The work of Ross, Hastings and their colleagues has alerted researchers to the possibility that parents engage in such intervention in part to teach children lessons. Ross and her colleagues have focused on the role of such intervention for teaching children rules about possession and property rights. Whereas property rights might be particularly salient in cultures such as the European-American subgroups in the U.S. that emphasize individualism and market forces, this might be less salient in other cultures. Many of the cultural groups in Indonesia emphasize collectivism, social …

Ethnography And The Idealized Accounts Of Science In Law, David S. Caudill Jan 2002

Ethnography And The Idealized Accounts Of Science In Law, David S. Caudill

San Diego Law Review

n Part I, I confirm the idealizations of science in law and their implications for legal scholarship and practice. In Part II, I describe the ethnographic method used by science studies scholars, with reference to my own ethnographic analysis of interviews with three neuroscientists. I conclude Part II by identifying various social aspects of science that comprise a complex picture of scientific activity. In Part ill, I discuss the implications of ethnomethodology for trial practice, including deposition analysis, Daubert-type hearings, cross-examination techniques, and drafting jury instructions. Part IV addresses anticipated criticisms of my arguments.

Feminist Legal Writing, Kathryn M. Stanchi Jan 2002

Feminist Legal Writing, Kathryn M. Stanchi

San Diego Law Review

Because feminist legal advocates must use legal writing to persuade

their audience and push for change in the law, they must confront the dilemma of whether to follow legal writing conventions and risk altering or losing their feminist message or whether to break from convention and risk losing the legal audience. Feminist legal scholarship, in many different ways, has made great progress in dealing with this dilemma. The focus of this Article, however, is on several pieces of feminist legal scholarship that have confronted the dilemma by pushing the bounds of conventional legal language and legal writing. These pieces, by …

Migration And Cultural Identity: Performing The Afro-Caribbean Woman's Struggle, Elvinet Samantha Wilson Jan 2002

Migration And Cultural Identity: Performing The Afro-Caribbean Woman's Struggle, Elvinet Samantha Wilson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Current research suggests a relationship between cultural identity negotiation and the phenomenon of border crossing. While a wealth of literature exists on the topic of migration, few studies reflect a scope that includes in-depth analysis of the experiences of Afro-Caribbean women in the United States.Through ethnographic and autoethnographic methodologies, and using a feminist theoretical lens, this study explores issues relating to cultural identity negotiation in the lives of 10 Black women from Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Trinidad, who now reside in the Midwest region of the United States. Analysis based on a grounded theory approach, allowed themes to emerge from …

Writing In The Contact Zone: Three Portraits Of Reflexivity And Transformation, Laurene L. Christensen Jan 2002

Writing In The Contact Zone: Three Portraits Of Reflexivity And Transformation, Laurene L. Christensen

Dissertations and Theses

Culture is at the core of language teaching. Because classrooms are contact zones (Pratt 1991), teachers must have a well-developed sense of their own intercultural competence so that they may better facilitate the cross-cultural discovery inherent in language teaching. Teacher preparation programs need to provide opportunities for new teachers to increase their intercultural awareness. The purpose of this research was to qualitatively understand the experiences of pre-service teachers in a required culture-learning class at a large urban university. Specifically, the focus of this study was the completion of a mini-ethnography project designed to give the students a cross-cultural exchange. Since …

Public Outreach And The "Hows" Of Archaeology : Archaeology As A Model For Education, Jon Darin Daehnke Jan 2002

Public Outreach And The "Hows" Of Archaeology : Archaeology As A Model For Education, Jon Darin Daehnke

Dissertations and Theses

There is growing awareness of the importance of public outreach in archaeology. Many professional archaeologists argue that in order to ensure continued funding we must communicate the relevance of our discipline to the public in a more effective manner. Furthermore, it is often argued that public outreach and education provides perhaps the only reliable defense against looting and rampant psuedoarchaeology.

Current outreach activities, however, tend to focus on what archaeologists have discovered about the past. While this type of outreach is important, a more effective model for public outreach would focus on the methods of archaeology, rather than the results. …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Site locations that provided essential geophysical resources including natural water sources, rock outcrops, arable land and a topographical regime that facilitated site drainage and water harvesting along with a strategic view of the surrounding area were available in limited number and widely distributed on the Karak Plateau, Jordan. As a result of competition for sites with access to these important resources, ancient site to resource spatial relationships are expected to have changed with changes in site density. Surveys conducted on the Karak Plateau, Jordan have reported a five-fold decrease in the number of sites during the Umayyad phase of the …
