Spaces Of Appearance: Writings On Contemporary Theatre And Performance, Antony David C. Williams
Spaces Of Appearance: Writings On Contemporary Theatre And Performance, Antony David C. Williams
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis, a collection of previously published materials, reflects a plural and evolving engagement with theatre and performance over the past fifteen years or so: as researcher, writer, editor, teacher, practitioner, spectator. These have rarely been discreet categories for me, but rather different modalities of exploration and enquiry, interrelated spaces encouraging dynamic connectivities, flows and further questions. Section 1 offers critical accounts of the practices of four contemporary theatre directors: Jerzy Grotowski, Robert Wilson, Peter Brook and Ariane Mnouchkine. Section 2 draws on elements of contemporary philosophy and critical thinking to explore the mutable parameters of performance. lt proposes performative …

When Litigation Is Not The Only Way: Consensus Building And Mediation As Public Interest Lawyering, Carrie Menkel-Meadow

British social philosopher Stuart Hampshire recently articulated the fundamental and foundational principles of the modem conflict resolution movement (and I do call it a movement). He asserted that, "there will always be a plurality of different and incompatible conceptions of the good and there cannot be a single comprehensive and consistent theory of human virtue. Correspondingly, "our political enmities in the city or state will never come to an end while we have diverse life stories and diverse imaginations.'' Hampshire, a socially progressive, socialist philosopher hoped to articulate universal conceptions of the good. In his lifetime of reflection on this …

The Historical Ceramics Of Camp Floyd, Jennifer L. Elsken
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an historical archaeological project involving the classification and analysis of the ceramics found at Camp Floyd, a 19th century military site 40 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. United States military troops were dispatched to the Utah Territory to establish a Pony Express Station and an Overland Stage Trail, to assert federal authority in the Territories, and to end the ongoing conflict between the federal government and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The primary research question concerned the ceramic usage patterns at Camp Floyd as compared to other military sites and non-residential …

Oral history - and spoken word collections generally - are assuming increasing importance in digital libraries as the storage, transmission and reproduction infrastructure improves. This paper describes three synergistic approaches to user needs analysis, explains how they are being applied to guide the design of systems to provide access oral history collections (using a s test bed the Shoah Foundations collection of over 50,000 videotaped oral history interviews), presents preliminary results from so -called “discount requirements analysis” and an analysis of “early access” requests, and draws some design implications. The results show a wide variety of users and uses of …

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article points out the potential of religious syncretism to ensure the political, social and economic security of Ukraine. The interpretation of religious syncretism not only as a sociocultural phenomenon, but also as a process of formation of this phenomenon is substantiated. The study singled out the stage of interfaith dialogue from the process of religious syncretism, which should form the basis for mutual understanding of faiths. This stage is considered as a multi-level communication of churches with separate structural directions, including the communicative direction of the denomination-society, in particular, the issue of economic and social security, and interfaith communication. …

Civilization in indigenous society were either created from philosophy ideology or strong belief based on [adat] that has been practiced in their daily lives. Adat on the other hand was reflected through the act of individual behaviour or society, which they practiced it in every aspect of their lives. Adat would be meaningless if it does not have intensity and integrity. Therefore society, which lives without adat, is like lives without identity and cultures. ln this context, Civilization in indigenous society was reflected through their demeanour behaviour or action that does not deviate from their norms and values. For the …

Perdebatan Kaum Tua Dan Kaum Muda Di Minangkabau Dalam Beberapa Masalah Pemikiran Islam, Saidul Amin
Student Works (2000-2009)

Some Islamic thought problems are discussed, such as tariqah, tawassul and wasilah, rabitah, ijtihad and modernization of Islamic thought. Kaum Tua was known to be very tolerant in practicing their Islamic beliefs and was able to combine it with original Minangkabau's culture and customs which were influenced by some teachings of animism, dynamism and hinduism. They also accepted and practiced sufism doctrines and rejected the ijtihad and modernization of Islamic …

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Hate Crimes Reporting And Administrative Policies As They Relate To Community Policing., Everett Otto Elliott
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
It has been 12 years since the passing of the Hate Crimes Statistics Act. Since that time much has been written about it. However, not many useful applications have been developed using the data that is collected. The author goes about identifying important discoveries made since 1990 about the nature of reporting hate crimes. The author also identifies problems with the reporting of hate crimes. By using a combination of the data from Hate Crime Statistics collected under the Uniform Crime Reports and data from the Sample Survey of Law Enforcement Agencies, the author hopes to be able to identify …
Helping Families To Capitalize On Literacy In Their Homes, Paula K. Azinger
Helping Families To Capitalize On Literacy In Their Homes, Paula K. Azinger
Graduate Research Papers
Literacy events of some sort occur most everyday in every home. Most schools have not considered some children's homes to be a source of rich literacy experiences, yet literacy practices are embedded within the daily routines of almost every family (McCarthey, 1997). The opportunities provided for children's participation in literacy practices in the home environment are closely related to parents' own literacy use at home. This article presents case studies of four families that each had a child involved in America Reads, a federally funded after-school program. The case studies are the result of an ongoing investigation of families' perceptions …

Christian Identity: An American Heresy, David Ostendorf
Christian Identity: An American Heresy, David Ostendorf
Journal of Hate Studies
Christian Identity is a belief system so strange, indeed bizarre, that most Americans who know anything about it dismiss it outright and relegate those who believe it to the quaint and quirky fringes of the nation’s religious subcultures. How seriously, for example, can one take the notion that God created Adam as a white man and that other races are sub-human? Or the belief that the lost tribes of Israel traversed Europe, landed in Great Britain, and crossed the Atlantic to inherit—as white Christian racialists—the promises of God? Or that Jesus came only to reach out to and save this …

Peer Group Instructional Conversation: Collaboration In Context, Linda Greene Capalbo
Open Access Dissertations
American schools traditionally have reflected and promoted societal values of autonomy and independence in the development of the individual child. This limited perspective on how humans come to know focuses on the accrued cultural capital of each learner and neglects the role of 'the other' in the construction of meaning. Such a view can be especially debilitating for students who have been identified as marginal learners. This study examines how social interaction organizes participation opportunities and strategies for members of a peer learning group, including a student designated language learning disabled. The study documents the development and negotiation of individual …
Land Use And Ceramic Distributions In Western Rough Cilicia, Turkey, Jennifer Ferrell
Land Use And Ceramic Distributions In Western Rough Cilicia, Turkey, Jennifer Ferrell
Nebraska Anthropologist
The Rough Cilicia Survey Project (RCSP) has been collecting data on the southern Mediterranean coast of Turkey (known as Rough Ci/icia) since 1996. This paper is a preliminary analysis of how the architectural and ceramic data collected by the survey team may be utilized. It is theorized here that the frequency of certain ceramic types may be linked to amount of architecture. However, this paper is not meant to be conclusive, but is rather a starting point for future studies of this data.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study follows the construction of terrorist bombings in four major United States’ newspapers. Data was collected from two sources, including a listing of the population of articles related to each attack and the first page full-length article of each attack. The population or articles were analyzed for date, length, and general intent and the individual articles were analyzed for keywords that corresponded to categories such as Aggressor, Victim, Motive, and Target. The data from these two sources were combined to provide a basis on which the mass media could be compared for the way in which terrorist bombings are …
