Inuit Land Use Patterns In The Hopedale Region, Deirdre A. Elliott
Inuit Land Use Patterns In The Hopedale Region, Deirdre A. Elliott
Northeast Historical Archaeology
This paper presents preliminary insights from an exploratory archaeological survey of the Hopedale region, Nunatsiavut. Despite its continued importance — from the 17th century as an Inuit whaling community — to the late 18th century with one of Labrador’s first Moravian missions, to today as the seat of the Nunatsiavut government, Hopedale has seen relatively little archaeological activity since the 1930s, and most of the islands and bays near the town had never been surveyed. A brief survey in the summer of 2018 recorded nearly 30 prehistoric, historic, and ethnographic sites, affirming the Labrador Inuit Association’s 1977 statement– “Our footprints …

In The Shadows Of Conquest: The Modern Maya Syncretic Legacy, Kimberly Weaner
In The Shadows Of Conquest: The Modern Maya Syncretic Legacy, Kimberly Weaner
Liberty University Research Week
Modern-day Guatemala is a unique illustration of the cultural and historical impacts of Spanish Colonialism. The Spanish Empire did not encounter a powerful central civilization to rival the likes of the Incas in Peru or the Aztecs in Mexico. Instead, Guatemala housed the remnants of the Maya, a once powerful civilization past their height. These Maya remnants fought hard to preserve their culture, forcing the Spanish conquistadors to come up with new methods of enslavement and authority. When the Spanish arrived in 1524, the Maya had collapsed into several small, fortified kingdoms, the strongest of which were the K’iche and …
Deceptive Innocence: Exploring The Symbolic Interpretation Of Purity In Little Billy's Letters, Lindsay Anton
Deceptive Innocence: Exploring The Symbolic Interpretation Of Purity In Little Billy's Letters, Lindsay Anton
Liberty University Research Week
This study attempts to answer the question, “How does the symbolic interpretation of innocence in Little Billy's letters influence the responses from famous individuals?” Over a period of several years, a little boy named Billy Geerhart wrote fan letters to a range of notable individuals: Richard Nixon, Mr. Rogers, Oprah Winfrey, Billy Graham, Johnny Cash, Charles Manson, and thousands more (Harness, 2010). He captured their attention through humorous, innocent, and whimsical letters. To his surprise, almost all of these celebrities responded to him in personalized letters. On a superficial level, this might seem like an obsessed kid reaching out to …

Therapeutic Benefits Of Psychedelics: Effectiveness For Addiction Treatment, Mental Health Issues, And End-Of-Life Care, Emma Roberts
Therapeutic Benefits Of Psychedelics: Effectiveness For Addiction Treatment, Mental Health Issues, And End-Of-Life Care, Emma Roberts
Student Works
As more research is done, psychedelics are increasingly recognized as a viable option for addiction treatment, mental health issues, and end-of-life care. Studies have hit roadblocks in the past due to the stigma surrounding psychedelics that formed in the 1960s. Since then, regulations have loosened, and psychedelic therapy has become a possible alternative for those who do not find their current treatments effective (Al-Harbi, 2012, as cited in Gardner, 2019; Gardner, 2019). Psychedelics can help individuals abstain from addictions (Sharma et al., 2023). Additionally, psychedelics can be a viable treatment for mental illnesses (Nygart et al., 2022) and can be …

We Clear The Way: United States Army Combat Engineers In The Second World War's Southwest Pacific Theater, 1942-1945, Marc C. Jeter
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The immense scope and scale of World War II required its combatants to conduct operations in every conceivable climatic condition and topographical setting. This fact has continued to represent a double-edged sword for the historiography of this conflict. The researcher may pursue any number of elements of this war to pursue and have done so. That said, aspects remain not yet mined from the cavernous topographical lode eight decades after this war. One such angle of this war not yet fully researched and analyzed by historians is that of General Douglas MacArthur and the US Army’s operational record and experiences …

A Phenomenology Study- Vicarious Trauma Among School Counselors And Teachers Working With Students From The Northern Triangle In Elementary Title I Schools, Janeth B. Santiesteban
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The present phenomenological study aimed to describe the lived experiences of school counselors and teachers working at elementary Title I schools in Maryland with students from the Northern Triangle (a region of Central America comprising El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras). The assumption was that these education professionals may undergo struggles and demands that may put them at risk of vicarious trauma due to the trauma those students and their families have endured. The theory guiding this study was the transactional theory of stress and coping (Lazarus,1966; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) and the stress theory (Cohen et al., 1997), which converge …

Popular Music And Sociocultural Empathy In The Elementary Classroom, Kelsey M. Packman
Masters Theses
This qualitative ethnographic study explores the undocumented effects of popular music on elementary students’ social and cultural empathy. Previous studies have explored the effects of popular music on adolescent and college-age students, but no study has researched these effects in the elementary classroom. This study aims to show that learning about socially-relevant popular music in a social setting advances students’ sociocultural and musical development. The researcher recruited eighty elementary-aged students from a private school in the Las Virgines School District in Los Angeles to participate in this study. The participants were sorted into subgroups by grade, and each subgroup was …
Slot Machine Addiction: The Untold Story Of Contradictions Between Self And America's Neoliberal Risk Society, Melanie C. Falconer
Slot Machine Addiction: The Untold Story Of Contradictions Between Self And America's Neoliberal Risk Society, Melanie C. Falconer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The ability to take risks is nothing short of heroism in the modern United States which thrives on a diet of hyper mobility, technological progress, and globalized, deregulated “free” markets. Such relentless instability affirms scholarly contentions that the U.S. is now a “risk society.” Indeed, in Gambling with the Myth of the American Dream: The Pokerization of America, rhetoric scholar Aaron Duncan suggests that media stories of modern poker tournaments signify a collective desire to grapple with this heightened modern “chanciness” within our established gambling lore and make it cohere with our deeply cherished notions of American individualism. While Duncan …

Great Leader, Great Learner: Shepherd-Teachers, Self-Directed Learning, And The Preaching Moment In Small Southern Baptist Churches, Matthew Thomas Gowin
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to explore the influence of the shepherd–teacher’s learning attributes, informed by adult learning theory, on the preaching moment within a conservative Southern Baptist congregation. Malcolm S. Knowles offered the theory guiding this study in his concepts of andragogy and self-directed learning. Knowles introduced an educational model that emphasizes adult learning and primarily self-directed learning. The study observed whether being a self-directed learner impacts the shepherd–teacher’s instructional activities, including preparation and delivery. The study addressed an identified gap between adult learning theory and homiletics. The multiple-case study started by surveying pastors with the …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation delves into the profound impact of the Second Great Awakening on American higher education and its enduring social consequences. Examining the period from the late eighteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century, the research uncovers the core belief that drove the Awakening—that America and its citizens were chosen for a divine purpose, endeavoring to manifest the kingdom of heaven on Earth. It explores how Protestant-led revivalism and social reform movements fueled by this core belief influenced the establishment and evolution of American higher education. Through in-depth case studies of Andover Theological Seminary, Lane Seminary, and Oberlin College, the research …

Creating A Podcast: Research About Reproductive Justice Accessible To The Public, Taylor Hansen
Proceedings of GREAT Day
In this paper, I will explain how I created a podcast about the findings from my research about reproductive justice. In this study, reproductive justice was understood as the right to have children, the right to not have children, and the right to have children in a safe and dignified environment. Starting from recommendations about what efforts should be made to promote reproductive justice, this project sought to find out what grassroots organizations are currently doing. In order to understand how grassroots organizers are addressing reproductive issues today, I interviewed eight leaders who are conducting this work in Western New …

The Silent, Spoken Stress: How A Lack Of Dialogue Perpetuates Vocal Issues And Lowered Quality Of Life In Educators, Peighton Cervoni
Proceedings of GREAT Day
This presentation examines the heavy burden of vocal issues and stress amongst educators in the Southern Tier of New York. Teachers are deemed one of the most at-risk groups of people for contracting vocal disorders according to the International Labor Organization (Araújo et al. 2008). Female teachers are disproportionately affected by vocal issues as caused by both biological and sociocultural factors. This disproportion then translates into their teaching, which then in turn affects their students’ learning and their job satisfaction. By incorporating evidence from articles, personal correspondence, and formal interviews with educators of various concentrations, this study demonstrates that teachers …

A Pxrf, Ftir And Sem/Eds Analysis Of The White Pigment On White Cross-Lined Ware, Rachel Pinkman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The current study will examine the composition of the pigment used for decorating a type of Predynastic Egyptian ceramic vessels known as “white cross-lined ware” or “C-ware.” Two collections of white cross-lined ware have been analyzed by visual analysis, portable x-ray fluorescence (pXRF), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy with an electron dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). The composition of this pigment may help scholars understand and recognize trade networks within and/or outside of Egypt, the types of materials Egyptian potters used and if different pigment recipes were employed for C-ware at different Predynastic sites. Furthermore, the identification …
Death Of The Subject: Heidegger And Foucault On Subject And Subjectivity, Qiuyue Chen
Death Of The Subject: Heidegger And Foucault On Subject And Subjectivity, Qiuyue Chen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The discourse on subjectivity, a central theme in philosophy, has garnered attention from thinkers like Heidegger and Foucault. Heidegger critiques subjectivity through a lens of metaphysics and ontology, while Foucault examines it as a social construct. This thesis aims to analyze their critiques and find common ground. The first chapter delves into Heidegger's critique of Cartesian subject and subject-object dualism in Being and Time and Being and Truth, arguing it obstructs a comprehensive understanding of human existence. In the second chapter, Foucault's analysis of subjectification, notably in The History of Sexuality, illustrates how the process of subjectification shapes self-knowledge and …
