The Rwandan Ethnic Crisis Of The 1990s: An Historical Analysis Of The Causes And A Strategy For Forgiveness And Reconciliation From A Seventh-Day Adventist Perspective, Hesron R. Byilingiro

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Statement of the Task

In 1994, the central Africa nation of Rwanda experienced a large-scale genocide in which thousands of people were killed. Many Christians including Adventists participated in these mass killings. It is the task of this study to investigate (1) the historical causes of the genocide, (2) why Seventh-day Adventist Christians participated in the genocide, and (3) propose strategies for forgiveness and reconciliation from an Adventist perspective.

Methodology

The study is an historical and analytical investigation of the country and people of Rwanda from precolonial to post-independence time. It draws on the personal experience and direct interviews of …

Creación De Grupos Pequen̋Os Para Las Clases Media Y Alta De Santo Domingo, Carlos Reyes Javier Jan 2002

Creación De Grupos Pequen̋Os Para Las Clases Media Y Alta De Santo Domingo, Carlos Reyes Javier

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Conventional small groups have not achieved the expected results in middle and high classes in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The research showed that there is a great difference between the number of people baptized among the lower class and those of middle and high classes. The Holy Scriptures command Christians to evangelize all people without any discrimination. Because of the potential impact of small groups, it is important to use them in evangelizing both social classes.

The foundation for small groups is in the Scriptures. Besides, there are instructions in the writings of Ellen G. White about using small groups …

Affiliation Among Females In Wild Hamadryas Baboons (Papio Hamadryas Hamadryas), Larissa Swedell Jan 2002

Affiliation Among Females In Wild Hamadryas Baboons (Papio Hamadryas Hamadryas), Larissa Swedell

Publications and Research

Previous studies of hamadryas baboons have described a “star-shaped” sociogram, whereby the strongest social bonds within hamadryas one-male units are those between a leader male and his females and bonds among females are weak by comparison. This type of social organization has also been called “cross bonding” to distinguish it from the “female bonding” found in most papionin monkeys. Models of female primate socioecology have suggested that hamadryas baboons lack female bonding due to their reliance on scarce, widely-dispersed food resources. Here I report observational data from a wild population of hamadryas baboons in Ethiopia indicating that, while females varied …

Ranging Behavior, Group Size, And Behavioral Flexibility In Ethiopian Hamadryas Baboons (Papio Hamadryas Hamadryas)., Larissa Swedell

Publications and Research

This study reports group size, home range size, daily path lengths, seasonal effects on ranging behavior and qualitative information on diet for a population of hamadryas baboons inhabiting the lowlands of the northern Rift Valley in central Ethiopia. The minimum home range size and daily path length for this population are similar to those reported for other populations of hamadryas baboons in Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia. Group sizes, however, are much larger than those in most other hamadryas populations for which published data are available. The large group sizes in this area may be related to the abundance of one …

Psychometric Investigation Of The Validity And Reliability Of The Beliefs About Voices Questionnaire-Revised In A Sample Of Psychotic Outpatients, John James Blue Jan 2002

Psychometric Investigation Of The Validity And Reliability Of The Beliefs About Voices Questionnaire-Revised In A Sample Of Psychotic Outpatients, John James Blue

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Refractory auditory hallucinations are a continuing problem in the treatment of schizophrenic, schizoaffective and psychotically depressed patient populations as well as patients with psychotic disorder, not otherwise specified. To date, little is known about the assessment of such hallucinatory states. Currently there are only a few instruments designed to examine the characteristics of auditory hallucinations. The study examined the reliability and validity of the Beliefs About Voices Questionnaire-Revised (BAVQ-R) in a sample of psychotic outpatients experiencing refractory auditory hallucinations. The present study consisted of 91 subjects; 57 men and 34 women selected from four separate community outpatient settings, who experienced …

Becoming Visible : A Qualitative Analysis Of Female To Male Transsexuals' Coming Out Experiences, Emily R. Chernicoff Jan 2002

Becoming Visible : A Qualitative Analysis Of Female To Male Transsexuals' Coming Out Experiences, Emily R. Chernicoff

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

This research explores the coming-out processes of 11 transgendered individuals who underwent female-to-male sex reassignment. Its purpose is to expand upon the cultural literacy of clinicians called upon to support transgendered clients who present with the intent to transition. The thesis is predicated on the argument that the differently-gendered constitute an understudied and discrete cultural minority, similar to ethnic, racial and sexual minorities, for whom identity formation is similarly impacted by socio-cultural influences. Qualitative content analysis of transcribed semi-structured interviews was conducted. Phase analysis was found to parallel both Cass's 1979 stage-model theory of sexual minority identity formation, and Devor's …

War And The Business Corporation, Eric W. Orts Jan 2002

War And The Business Corporation, Eric W. Orts

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article addresses the relationship between modern warfare and business corporations. The Article begins by considering the nature of war, emphasizing the effects of globalization and the changing importance of national boundaries. The Article reviews leading theories of war and focuses on how the growth of multinational corporations in economic and political power has begun to rival the power of nation-states. Next, the Article addresses the nature of the business corporation in the context of modern war by surveying standard legal, ethical, and economic understandings of corporate governance. The Article concludes by arguing that the recognition of the moral and …

The Multinational And The "New Stakeholder": Examining The Business Case For Human Rights, Scott Greathead Jan 2002

The Multinational And The "New Stakeholder": Examining The Business Case For Human Rights, Scott Greathead

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Business managers who ignore these realities--the concerns of these new corporate stakeholders--do so at the risk of their company's brand and their own careers. These are just a few examples of the new stakeholders of multinational corporations--workers, consumers, investors, indigenous peoples, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the media...

The concerns of these new stakeholders embrace human rights. It is a much broader concept of human rights, however, than the civil and political rights that used to dominate the agenda. Former concerns centered on freedom from arbitrary arrest, detentions, and other due process rights, freedom of speech and association, and governmental abuses …

Breaking The Mimetic Contract: Notes On Ideology, Intersubjectivity, And Film Theory, Giorgio Bertellini, C. Paul Sellors Jan 2002

Breaking The Mimetic Contract: Notes On Ideology, Intersubjectivity, And Film Theory, Giorgio Bertellini, C. Paul Sellors

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

In this essay we would like to sketch out a few notes outlining historical and theoretical trajectories of the confusing, and often confused, relationships between ideology, history and subjectivity in Marx, Marxism and post-Marxism. Marx and Engels' approach to ideology in The German Ideology (1845-46), spawned and influenced a variety of interpretations and philosophical positions from not only the numerous schools of Marxism proper, but also structuralism, semiotics and psychoanalysis up to the very raison d'être of discourse theory and new historicism. This reaching influence occurs only at the cost of contradiction, however, between Marxist factions -- disagreements …

Writing Identity Into Space: The Relationship Between Ethnography, Autobiography, And Space In Bronislaw Malinowski's A Diary In The Strict Sense Of The Term And Claude Lévi-Strauss's Tristes Tropiques, Lawrence Phillips Jan 2002

Writing Identity Into Space: The Relationship Between Ethnography, Autobiography, And Space In Bronislaw Malinowski's A Diary In The Strict Sense Of The Term And Claude Lévi-Strauss's Tristes Tropiques, Lawrence Phillips

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

From a number of disciplinary perspectives autobiography has always presented a challenge to more or less discrete modes of reading and evaluating the text. To read autobiography as a literary text is to suppress its close relationship to the writer, however fictionalised and evasive the writing subject might be about a textual identity so closely related to his or her public persona. On the other hand, to read it as history or a documentary presentation of a life is to fail to acknowledge the heavy use of literary techniques and imbedded subjectivity that makes autobiography what it is. …

C.L.R. James, Mid-Century Marxism, And The Popular Arts, Kenton W. Worcester Jan 2002

C.L.R. James, Mid-Century Marxism, And The Popular Arts, Kenton W. Worcester

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

“Popular culture” has played a decidedly important role for many prominent Marxist thinkers: For Fredric Jameson, it is increasingly important in his work, for Terry Eagleton, a counterpoint to more high brow culture, and for Marx himself a potentially distracting area of inquiry. In the following examination of C.L.R. James’ interest in popular culture, Kenton Worcester argues that he was, contrary to the thought of some, very interested -- both in popular culture per se, and the relation of race to modes of expression which can only be considered “popular” in the finest sense.

Playful Attraction -- Examining The Nature Of Japanese Cruising, Phil Sawkins Jan 2002

Playful Attraction -- Examining The Nature Of Japanese Cruising, Phil Sawkins

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Much research has been done, in and out of the field of social anthropology, on courting and associated practices (especially in rural communities), such as yobai (literally night crawling -- entering a girl's house under cover of darkness in search of love), letter exchanging, wakamonoyado (literally young people's inn, a house where young people meet socially) omiai (arranged marriage), and so on. Most of this research has been done under the rubric of pre-marriage activities, or even, activities permitted because it is expected they'll lead to marriage [1]. The sheer volume of this research is undoubtedly a reflection …

Using Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis To Determine Age At Death, Jennifer Elizabeth Riddle Jan 2002

Using Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis To Determine Age At Death, Jennifer Elizabeth Riddle

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research took an age-related condition, diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) and used it to create a new technique for estimating the age at death of older human skeletal remains (age ≥40). Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis is a condition characterized spinally by ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament resulting in fusion of vertebrae; and extraspinally by enthesopathies, ossification at sites of ligament or muscle attachments. Using the Terry Collection, housed at the Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of Natural History, 1728 human skeletons of known age at death were analyzed looking for evidence of spinal DISH. Found in 94 individuals, the …

Perkembangan Perdagangan, Perkapalan Dan Pelabuhan Di British Borneo, 1800-1963, Hanizah Idris

Student Works (2000-2009)

For the last two decades, there have been remarkably few works that have dealt with British Borneo as a whole. Over time, different works particularly on the political and anthropological aspects have been written on British Borneo but separately as an individual state. Therefore, this thesis focuses on the development of trade, shipping and ports that are also of major significance in the study of British Borneo. From 1800 to 1963, British Borneo had experienced tremendous changes in the development of trade, shipping and ports. As a resource based territory, it has attracted traders and entrepreneurs from other parts of …

Fracture Patterns Of Fire Cracked Rock, An Analysis Of Artifacts From The Batesville Mounds, 22pa500, Panola County, Mississippi / By John Sullivan, John Sullivan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The excavations at Batesville Mound sites recovered a large quantity of artifacts. Fire Cracked Rock (FCR) was the major artifact type, if not sheer in weight certainly in number. Much research is being done in Texas, Michigan, Oregon and other states that have helped archaeologists to determine the different ways heated rocks fracture. Rocks will fracture in regular patterns depending on the rate and method of heat loss or gain. The patterns are expansion (dry) and compression (wet) fractures. A large amount of FCR in the mound fill and very little in the village area suggests that the mound refuse …

Threats, Free Speech, And The Jurisprudence Of The Federal Criminal Law, G. Robert Blakey, Brian J. Murray Jan 2002

Threats, Free Speech, And The Jurisprudence Of The Federal Criminal Law, G. Robert Blakey, Brian J. Murray

Journal Articles

In these materials, we set out a road map for the task of reforming the jurisprudence of threats and an articulation of its rationale under the First Amendment. In addition, we examine the basic jurisprudence of the federal criminal law, in particular, its traditional roots in notions of individual responsibility based on personal conduct and state of mind. In Part I, we analyze the district court and the Ninth Circuit opinions in the American Coalition litigation. In Part II, we trace the traditional theory and practice of free speech under the First Amendment, rooted in the history and various rationales …
