The Impact Of Buffer Strips And Stream-Side Grazing On Small Mammals In Southwestern Wisconsin, Erik W. Chapman, Christine A. Ribic Jan 2002

The Impact Of Buffer Strips And Stream-Side Grazing On Small Mammals In Southwestern Wisconsin, Erik W. Chapman, Christine A. Ribic

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The practice of continuously grazing cattle along streams has caused extensive degradation of riparian habitats. Buffer strips and managed intensive rotational grazing (MIRG) have been proposed to protect and restore stream ecosystems in Wisconsin. However, the ecological implications of a switch from traditional livestock management to MIRG or buffer strip establishment have not been investigated. Differences in small mammal communities associated with riparian areas on continuously grazed and MIRG pastures, as well as vegetative buffer strips adjacent to row crops, were investigated in southwestern Wisconsin during May–September 1997 and 1998. More species (mean of 6–7) were found on the buffer …

Availability Of Food Resources, Distribution Of Invasive Species, And Conservation Of A Hawaiian Bird Along A Gradient Of Elevation, Paul C. Banko, Peter T. Oboyski, John W. Slotterback, Steven J. Dougill, Daniel M. Goltz, Luanne Johnson, Megan E. Laut Jan 2002

Availability Of Food Resources, Distribution Of Invasive Species, And Conservation Of A Hawaiian Bird Along A Gradient Of Elevation, Paul C. Banko, Peter T. Oboyski, John W. Slotterback, Steven J. Dougill, Daniel M. Goltz, Luanne Johnson, Megan E. Laut

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Aim

We evaluated how an elevation gradient affects: (1) the availability of food required by a specialist seed-eater, Loxioides bailleui Oustalet (Drepanidinae), or palila, and hence the distribution of this endangered Hawaiian bird, and (2) the distribution of alien threats to Loxioides populations, their primary foods, and their dry-forest habitat, and hence strategies for their conservation.

Location

We worked throughout the subalpine forest that encircles Mauna Kea Volcano, Hawai‘i Island, but we focused our studies mainly on the western slope between 2000 and 3000 m elevation, where the gradient of elevation was greatest and palila were most abundant.

Methods

We …

Master Conservationist Awards, John Owens

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances

It is a distinct pleasure to be with you this evening to present the Master Conservationist awards. I appreciate the opportunity to recognize those who have gone the extra mile to enhance Nebraska's natural resources and our way of life. Their efforts take on even more importance in a year like this when drought conditions have threatened field crops, pastures, and rangeland, as well as water for livestock and the citizens of our state. Times like this underscore how important it is for us to recognize the delicate balance of nature.

The Master Conservationists we honor tonight have long-recognized the …

Coccidia (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) Of The Mammalian Order Chiroptera, Donald W. Duszynski Jan 2002

Coccidia (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) Of The Mammalian Order Chiroptera, Donald W. Duszynski

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The coccidia are protists (phylum Apicomplexa) that, likely, are both the most abundant (numbers of individual zoites) and most speciose of all the kinds of parasites found in/on mammals. They also are among the least studied and understood, with the exception of those species that cause pathology in domesticated Artiodactyla. In this review, I focus only on the largest family of the phylum, Eimeriidae Minchin, 1903, because its members often are among the most prevalent apicomplexans of mammals, and because there has never been a taxonomic summation for those species that infect Chirpotera. In all published descriptions of bat coccidia, …

The Structure Of The Nucleus Of Odonaticola Polyhamatus (Gregarinea: Actinocephalidae), A Parasite Of Mnais Strigata (Hagen) (Odonata: Calopterygidae), Kasumi Hoshide, John J. Janovy Jr. Jan 2002

The Structure Of The Nucleus Of Odonaticola Polyhamatus (Gregarinea: Actinocephalidae), A Parasite Of Mnais Strigata (Hagen) (Odonata: Calopterygidae), Kasumi Hoshide, John J. Janovy Jr.

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The nucleus of Odonaticola polyhamatus was isolated from the body and observed with light, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. The nucleus had a thick thread-like structure with which it was tied to the septum. This thread-like structure has not been reported or described previously. The gregarine nuclear surface was covered with a fine fibrous net. This is the first report of the surface structure of a gregarine nucleus as revealed by SEM. Inside the nuclear membrane was a thin honeycomb layer similar to that reported for some other gregarines. Several spherical nucleoli and numerous electron dense small structures were …

Potential Pathological Effects Of Blood Flukes (Digenea: Sanguinicolidae) On Pen-Reared Marine Fishes, Stephen A. Bullard, Robin M. Overstreet Jan 2002

Potential Pathological Effects Of Blood Flukes (Digenea: Sanguinicolidae) On Pen-Reared Marine Fishes, Stephen A. Bullard, Robin M. Overstreet

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Sanguinicolids, or fish blood flukes, infect the vascular system of both marine and freshwater fishes, and some act as serious pathogens of hosts in aquaculture. Blood flukes typically possess a relatively benign relationship with wild fishes; however, cultured hosts near appropriate intermediate hosts (i.e., snail, bivalve, or polychaete) may accumulate heavy infections of the worms and their eggs. The resulting disease, sanguinicoliasis, has caused mass mortalities of fish reared in ponds and cages in North America, Europe, and Asia. In the life cycle, the cercaria emerges from the intermediate invertebrate host and penetrates into and matures in the definitive fish …

Accounting For The Slow Growth Of American Privacy Law, Rodney A. Smolla Jan 2002

Accounting For The Slow Growth Of American Privacy Law, Rodney A. Smolla

Law Faculty Publications

American privacy law is surprisingly weak. If privacy law were a stock, its performance over the last century would not be deemed impressive.  It has been a consistently poor achiever, barely keeping up with inflation. I speak here of privacy law in the tort sense, and the four torts that are classically understood to comprise invasion of privacy: 1) false light; 2) publication of private facts; 3) intrusion; and 4) appropriation. Of these four torts, only appropriation (or "the right of publicity") has been a ripping success for plaintiffs, a genuine high-return stock, and a species of intellectual property, even …

Electrical Conductivity Monitoring Of Soil Condition And Available N With Animal Manure And A Cover Crop, R. A. Eigenberg, John W. Doran, John A. Nienaber, Richard B. Ferguson, B. L. Woodbury Jan 2002

Electrical Conductivity Monitoring Of Soil Condition And Available N With Animal Manure And A Cover Crop, R. A. Eigenberg, John W. Doran, John A. Nienaber, Richard B. Ferguson, B. L. Woodbury

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Development of sustainable agricultural management systems will depend, in part, on the ability to better use renewable resources, such as animal manure, and to synchronize the levels of soil available N with crop plant needs during the growing season. This study was conducted at the US Meat Animal Research Center in the central USA to determine whether differences in electromagnetic (EM) soil conductivity and available N levels over a growing season can be linked to feedlot manure/compost application and use of a green winter cover crop. A series of soil conductivity maps of a research cornfield were generated using global …

Reductions In Grassland Species Evenness Increase Dicot Seedling Invasion And Spittle Bug Infestation, Brian J. Wilsey, H. Wayne Polley Jan 2002

Reductions In Grassland Species Evenness Increase Dicot Seedling Invasion And Spittle Bug Infestation, Brian J. Wilsey, H. Wayne Polley

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Previous experiments that tested whether diverse plant communities have lower invasibility have all varied species richness. We experimentally varied evenness of four grassland species (three grasses and one forb) by planting a field experiment in Texas, and monitored the number of unplanted dicot and monocot species that invaded plots for two growing seasons. By varying evenness, we eliminated any sampling effect in our diversity treatment, because all plots contained the same plant species. Experimentally reducing evenness led to a greater number of dicot invaders, which emerged in plots throughout the growing season, but had less of an effect on monocot …

Tillage And Beef Cattle Manure Effects On Soil Nitrogen In A Dryland Rotation, R. C. Schwartz, R.L. Baumhardt, T.H. Dao Jan 2002

Tillage And Beef Cattle Manure Effects On Soil Nitrogen In A Dryland Rotation, R. C. Schwartz, R.L. Baumhardt, T.H. Dao

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Minimum tillage practices used in dryland cropping systems that reduce soil water evaporation and erosion may also decrease efficiency of manure nutrient utilization. We initiated a study in 1997 to investigate the effects of surface-applied stockpiled and composted beef cattle (Bos taurus) manure on soil N and sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) yields and N-uptake within a wheat-sorghum-fallow dryland crop rotation. Paired terraces with no-tillage (NT) and stubble-mulch tillage (ST) systems were main plots of a single rotation phase. Stockpiled manure, composted manure, or commercial fertilizer (urea + ammonium phosphate) were …

Development Of Hydrotaea Aenescens (Diptera: Muscidae) In Manure Of Unweaned Dairy Calves And Lactating Cows, Jerome Hogsette, Robert Farkas, Reginald Coler Jan 2002

Development Of Hydrotaea Aenescens (Diptera: Muscidae) In Manure Of Unweaned Dairy Calves And Lactating Cows, Jerome Hogsette, Robert Farkas, Reginald Coler

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

In laboratory studies performed in the United States and Hungary, the dump fly Hydrotaea aenescens (Wiedemann) was reared successfully in manure of 1- to 8-wk-old dairy calves, and in manure from adult lactating dairy cows. Survival in manure collected from 1-wk-old calves was poor (7.2%), better in manure collected from 2- and 3-wk-old calves (53.5%), and best in manure collected from 4- to 8-wk-old calves (71.4%). Survival in cow manure was slightly lower (47.4%) than that in calf manure. Reasons for different rates of development in the United States and in Hungary, and by calf age are discussed as are …

Development Of A Chromatographic Method For The Analysis Of Carbohydrates In Posidonia Coriacea In Artificial Cultures, Olivia J. Oldfield Jan 2002

Development Of A Chromatographic Method For The Analysis Of Carbohydrates In Posidonia Coriacea In Artificial Cultures, Olivia J. Oldfield

Theses : Honours

Carbohydrates in P. coriacea leaves were analysed to determine if, when in artificial culture, they were unable to replenish their carbohydrate stores once the seed starch reserve was consumed. While no evidence was found to suggest that this was happening, other findings were made. Soluble carbohydrates determined in P. coriacea were sucrose, fructose, glucose, trehalose, myo-inositol and mannitol. However, mannitol was only found in in situ plants sampled in June. This may be due to high epiphyte coverage elevating plant stress and therefore mannitol levels. P. coriacea grown in tissue culture has soluble carbohydrate levels up to 20-fold higher than …

An Investigation Of The Perceptions Of The Policy Maker, Teachers And Students Of The Current Primary 4 Gifted Education Program In Singapore, Veeramangai Arulselvi Muthiah

Theses : Honours

As Singapore is a rapidly expanding technological society, there is a strong need for emergent thinkers or innovators due to global competition. Therefore, the identification of exceptionally able children is critical for the continued growth of Singapore. Singapore is a very small nation and relies strongly on human resources for its progress and prosperity. Hence, early identification of exceptionally able children will be an advantage to the nation. Education of gifted and talented children is just as important as the education of children with disabilities or developmental delay. In addition, there is growing concern among many Singaporeans that the current …

The Short Term Effects Of A Fire Fighting Foam And Fire Retardant On Selected Flora From Australia's Southwest, Andrew B. Kennedy Jan 2002

The Short Term Effects Of A Fire Fighting Foam And Fire Retardant On Selected Flora From Australia's Southwest, Andrew B. Kennedy

Theses : Honours

Chemical fire suppressants arc used extensively throughout Australia's Southwest to contain and suppress wildfires. Despite several studies being conducted into their effects on terrestrial vegetation in North America and Eastern Australia, where a variety of significant effects were found, no such investigation has been carried out in Australia's Southwest. This study examined the short-term effects of a fire fighting foam and fire retardant on selected flora from Australia's Southwest. Various concentrations of fire fighting foam and fire retardant were applied to seeds and seedlings of several native species. Native species were chosen for their high abundance and widespread distribution throughout …

Invasion Of Indigenous Vegetation In South-Western Australia By Leptospermum Laevigatum (Gaertn.) F. Muell. (Myrtaceae), Anya Lam Jan 2002

Invasion Of Indigenous Vegetation In South-Western Australia By Leptospermum Laevigatum (Gaertn.) F. Muell. (Myrtaceae), Anya Lam

Theses : Honours

The current paradigm of biodiversity conservation requires the assessment of alien plant invaders, and their potential negative impacts on indigenous species and communities. Leptospermum laevigatum (Gaertn.) F. Muell. (Victorian tea tree/ Coast tea tree) is indigenous to eastern Australia. It has invaded ecosystems within its natural biogeographic range, within new ranges in Australia and overseas. The species is listed as a high priority weed in the Environmental Weed Strategy for Western Australia. However, the basis for its listing has been casual observation rather than focussed research. This study of L. laevigatum is unique in being the first to …

T(H)Ree Rhizome(S) On 'Close/Open' Encounters With Kinsella's Pastoralism Of The 'Radical' Kind, Klyth Tan Soo-Hong Jan 2002

T(H)Ree Rhizome(S) On 'Close/Open' Encounters With Kinsella's Pastoralism Of The 'Radical' Kind, Klyth Tan Soo-Hong

Theses : Honours

In his elaborative Landbridge 'statement of intent', Western Australian and International poet John Kinsella - whose phenomenal rise since the '90s is now a worldwide literary success story that needs no introduction - asserts a profound interest for the 'pastoral radical' (Kinsella, ed. Kinsella, Landbridge, 1999): “I'm particularly interested in the 'pastoral radical'- in blending the so-called pastoral tradition with the lingui.stically innovative. This 'hybrid' ironises the pastoral construct but allows for genuine movement through rural spaces. Landscape is central to my project - ways of seeing, questions of occupation and space, the position and relevance of the so-called 'lyrical …

Sexually Dimorphic Behavioral Responses To Prenatal Dioxin Exposure, Rieko Hojo, Sander Stern, Grazyna Zareba, Vincent P. Markowski, Christopher Cox, James T. Kost, Bernard Weiss

Psychology

Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats received a single oral dose of 0, 20, 60, or 180 ng/kg 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin on day 8 of gestation. Each litter contributed a single male-female pair trained to press a lever to obtain food pellets under two operant behavior procedures. Initially, each lever press was reinforced. The fixed-ratio (FR) requirement was then increased every four sessions from the initial setting of 1 to values between 6 and 71. We then studied responses for 30 days under a multiple schedule combining FR 11 and another schedule requiring a pause of at least 10 sec between responses (DRL 10-sec). TCDD …

Purification Of The Hmg1 Protein And Investigation Of Its Interactions With Diepoxide Cross-Linked Dna, Gayle Pageau Jan 2002

Purification Of The Hmg1 Protein And Investigation Of Its Interactions With Diepoxide Cross-Linked Dna, Gayle Pageau

Honors Theses

HMG1 is a nonhistone chromosomal protein that binds preferentially to some types of globally modified DNA. HMG1 has been implicated in the cellular response to the anti-cancer agent cisplatin, functioning to block excision repair of specific distorted platinated DNA lesions and resulting in enhanced cytotoxicity. We have investigated whether other DNA-binding agents also produce lesions that are recognized by HMG1. Specifically, we used polyacrylamide gel shift assays to monitor the potential HMG1 binding of diepoxybutane interstrand cross-links, which have been suggested to induce DNA bending. We isolated the native protein from chicken erythrocytes and expressed engineered HMG domain proteins in …

Recognizing The Interdependence Of Rights In The Antidiscrimination Context Through The World Conference Against Racism , Catherine Powell, Jennifer H. Lee Jan 2002

Recognizing The Interdependence Of Rights In The Antidiscrimination Context Through The World Conference Against Racism , Catherine Powell, Jennifer H. Lee

Faculty Scholarship

This background paper assesses the importance of integrating gender into efforts to address racial discrimination and related intolerance in the WCAR process. While this background paper primarily focuses on racial discrimination, the analysis may be applied to xenophobia and related intolerance where these experiences are "raced" experiences. Addressing these forms of intolerance in a comprehensive manner requires unmasking the ways in which race intersects with gender and other status. A gender analysis is needed to make racism more fully visible, because "racial discrimination does not always affect men and women equally or in the same way." Women often experience compounded …

Lamprey And Oyster River Watersheds River Stewardship Program, Margaret Watkins Jan 2002

Lamprey And Oyster River Watersheds River Stewardship Program, Margaret Watkins

PREP Reports & Publications

This project was designed for riverfront landowners and local land use decisionmakers to fill a critical gap in shoreland protection: land management by individual riparian landowners. By working directly with individuals in a hands-on venue, we intended to build a more informed public, knowledgeable about the value of riparian buffers. A better appreciation of the value of buffers not only improves stewardship of individual properties, but also is likely to inspire stronger support for regulatory approaches to shoreland protection. The project addressed several NHEP goals. The approach was to hold a series of public workshops, lead by specialists in water …

Mechanistic Studies To Elucidate The Role Of Lipid Vehicles On Solubility, Formulation And Bioa Vailability Of Poorly Soluble Compounds, Inayet Dumanli Jan 2002

Mechanistic Studies To Elucidate The Role Of Lipid Vehicles On Solubility, Formulation And Bioa Vailability Of Poorly Soluble Compounds, Inayet Dumanli

Open Access Dissertations

Lipids have been utilized to increase the bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs which resulted in with advent of High Throughput Screening (HTS). Although lipids have been used to improve bioavailability of a few drugs for almost twenty years, they are still not well characterized. There are limited publications about the effects of physicochemical properties of the lipid vehicle, such as class of lipid (i.e. glyceride, propylene glycol ester), fatty acid chain length, MW and polarity on lipid solubility, formulation and bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs. Knowledge of such relationship can improve quick screening of these vehicles. The goals of this …
