Positive Attitudes Lead to Success: An Intervention Program for Elementary Discipline-Challenged Male Students

This dissertation describes the Positive Attitudes Lead to Success Club (PALS), a program designed to help 20 5th-grade male students in an elementary school of 760 students improve their behavior and achieve academic success. An analysis of the Discipline Report data for the last 3 years reveals that Campostella Elementary (CES) has had an unacceptable amount of referrals by the standards set forth by Norfolk Public Schools (NPS) for unacceptable behavior. These 20 students have received 80% of all referrals for the past school year. Such information …

Review Of Soil Conservation Legislation : Carnarvon Horticultural Area, Jean-Pierre Clement Jan 2002

Review Of Soil Conservation Legislation : Carnarvon Horticultural Area, Jean-Pierre Clement

Agriculture reports

Lower Gascoyne Management Strategy The Carnarvon horticultural area has suffered considerable erosion damage following flooding of the Gascoyne River. Factors contributing to the erosion include a move to greater vegetable production, the carrying out of unauthorised earthworks and general confusion about the laws that apply to land management and erosion control. With this context, the purpose of this report is: • to clarify the laws applying to erosion control in the Carnarvon horticultural area; • to identify the public authorities with management responsibility for erosion control; and • to suggest a model by which erosion controls and management responsibilities can …

A Potential Nutraceutical From Leuconostoc Mesenteroides B-742 (Atcc 13146); Production And Properties, Chang-Ho Chung Jan 2002

A Potential Nutraceutical From Leuconostoc Mesenteroides B-742 (Atcc 13146); Production And Properties, Chang-Ho Chung

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

There is an emerging market for functional oligosaccharides for use in foods. Currently, technology for the production of oligosaccharides is limited to extraction from plant sources, acid or enzymatic hydrolysis of polysaccharides or synthesis by transglycosylation reactions. Oligosaccharides also can be produced using a Leuconostoc fermentation and restricting the polymer size by the addition of maltose. Maltose limits the dextransucrase reaction, yielding high concentrations of a-glucooligosaccharides. Branched oligomers produced by this process were found to be readily catabolized by bifidobacteria and lactobacillus but were not readily utilized by either Salmonella sp., or E. coli, pointing toward their use in intestinal …

Northern Pintail Nest Site Selection, Nest Success, Renesting Ecology And Survival In The Intensively Farmed Prairies Of Southern Saskatchewan: An Evaluation Of The Ecological Trap Hypothesis, Kenneth Daniel Richkus Jan 2002

Northern Pintail Nest Site Selection, Nest Success, Renesting Ecology And Survival In The Intensively Farmed Prairies Of Southern Saskatchewan: An Evaluation Of The Ecological Trap Hypothesis, Kenneth Daniel Richkus

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Unlike most prairie nesting ducks (Anas spp.), the North American population of northern pintails (A. acuta, hereafter pintails) has failed to respond as expected to improved wetland conditions on the U.S. and Canadian prairies during the mid to late 1990s. My primary objectives were to test the “ecological trap hypothesis” on a landscape level by examining pintail nest site selection and nest success in a highly agricultural environment in southern Saskatchewan. I also used radiotelemetry to estimate renesting and breeding season survival rates of female pintails; two parameters that are important in productivity and life cycle models. Most (51%) pintail …

Bonytail (Gila Elegans) May Enhance Survival Of Razorback Suckers (Xyrauchen Texanus) In Rearing Ponds By Preying On Exotic Crayfish, Nathan Lenon, Krystyna Anne Stave, Tom Burke, James E. Deacon

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

This study examined the potential of bonytail (Gila elegans) to enhance survival of young razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus) in rearing ponds by serving as a biological control agent for young stages of Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarki). Large populations of crayfish in rearing ponds negatively affect the survival of razorback suckers, through predation and competition for food. Traps made with 6.34 mm (0.25 inch) mesh have been used in an effort to reduce crayfish populations, however crayfish less than 17 mm carapace length (CPL) are able to escape. Juvenile bonytail in experimental trials ate young crayfish ranging in size from …

Bile Duct Response To Repeated Cerulein Induced Pancreatitis In The Rat, Ali̇ Menteş, Hasan Aydede, Ümi̇t Bayol, Funda Yilmaz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The typical morphology of common bile duct strictures in chronic pancreatitis suggests a pathogenesis not of encasement, but of mural changes in the common bile duct. Cerulein, 20 µg/kg was administered to male Wistar rats in four subcutaneous doses, hourly for 3 h, and was recorded as one application. Group A served as controls and received subcutaneous saline. Group B1 received one application of Cerulein and was sacrificed after 24 h. Group B2 was similar to B1, but was sacrificed two weeks later. Group B3 was given two applications of Cerulein with an interval of two weeks and was sacrificed …

Vegetation Effects On Airborne Particles And Soil Gradation Near Mesquite Dunes, Ann Marleau Pitchford Jan 2002

Vegetation Effects On Airborne Particles And Soil Gradation Near Mesquite Dunes, Ann Marleau Pitchford

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the effect of vegetation on gradation of surficial soils and airborne concentrations of particulate matter at a site in the mesquite sand dunes within the Jornada Experimental Range, a research ranch near Las Cruces, New Mexico. Particles less than 10 microns in diameter were of particular interest. This study site was chosen because it had been in used in previous studies, and meteorological instruments and dust collectors were already installed. Aerodynamic size distributions for soil and airborne particulate matter samples collected at different positions near and on the dunes were determined using a laboratory settling tube apparatus. …

Cognitive Rehabilitation: A Method For Improving Sustained And Selective Attention In Adolescents With Attentional Deficits, Glinda Rae Bullock Jan 2002

Cognitive Rehabilitation: A Method For Improving Sustained And Selective Attention In Adolescents With Attentional Deficits, Glinda Rae Bullock

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is an inherited neuropsychological disorder affecting 3% to 5% of the school-aged population of the United States and having no identified single cause. The primary treatment recommended for those suffering from attentional deficits is multimodal, which includes psychostimulant medication in the form of methylphenidate (Ritalin) and behavioral/educational interventions. However, there is a subset of sufferers who, though taking psychostimulant medications and undergoing behavioral and educational interventions, continue to suffer the symptoms of attentional deficits: distractibility, impulsiveness and aggressive behavior; Those affected by acquired brain injuries as the result of some external trauma or neurological disorder suffer …

Tadpole Shrimp (Triops Longicaudatus) Responses To Acute And Developmental Hypoxic Exposure, Stacey Lynn Harper Jan 2002

Tadpole Shrimp (Triops Longicaudatus) Responses To Acute And Developmental Hypoxic Exposure, Stacey Lynn Harper

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Tadpole shrimp Triops longicaudatus (Crustacea: Branchiopoda: Notostraca) were reared under normoxic (19--21 kPa O2), moderate (10--13 kPa O2) or severe (1--3 kPa O2) hypoxic conditions to investigate the effects of developmental Po2 (partial pressure of oxygen) on adult metabolic, respiratory and cardiovascular physiology. Growth rates were independent of developmental Po2, although adult body size was significantly smaller in tadpole shrimp reared under severe hypoxic conditions relative to those reared under normoxic conditions. Most organisms increase respiratory surface area in response to hypoxic exposure. Yet growth of the epipodites (proposed respiratory structure) relative to mass (Y = aMb) was significantly reduced …

Cuba's Tourist Industry: Parallel Economies And Social Stratification, Marie Nathan Hummel Jan 2002

Cuba's Tourist Industry: Parallel Economies And Social Stratification, Marie Nathan Hummel

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

International tourism has played an important role in unintended social changes in socialist countries. These social and cultural changes affect not only the economic, political and cultural genre of the government, but also of its citizens; This thesis asks the question, "Has the re-introduction of international tourism in Cuba diluted and compromised the egalitarian goals of the revolution"? I intend to show that the consequences of Cuba's emerging tourist industry has not only compromised the ideology of the revolution, but has in fact seen a return of a pre-revolution stratified society and parallel economies, one based on the peso and …

Exploring The Shivwits Production Zone, Eva Albrecht Jensen Jan 2002

Exploring The Shivwits Production Zone, Eva Albrecht Jensen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Shivwits Plateau is situated on the Arizona Strip in the northwest corner of Arizona. It is a relatively unexplored area rich in archaeological resources. This study provides three areas of exploration of the prehistoric Virgin Anasazi Pueblo period. Three research questions are posed. Are there substantial Virgin Puebloan sites on the Shivwits Plateau? Through compiled site data and analysis of settlement models the information supports the conclusion that there was a substantial prehistoric use of the Shivwits Plateau; A specific question about pottery production guides the second part of the research. Was the sherd-tempered Shivwits Plain and Shivwits Corrugated …

Salient Features Of Contextual Interference And Knowledge Of Results, Morgan Steven Kearney Jan 2002

Salient Features Of Contextual Interference And Knowledge Of Results, Morgan Steven Kearney

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The current study investigated the relationship between the contextual interference effect and knowledge of results manipulations. Specifically, three variations of a relative timing task were presented in either a blocked or random schedule, and participants were either required to error estimate or given no instruction concerning estimation. A 2 (Acquisition Context) x 2 (Error Estimation Frequency) ANOVA was used to analyze absolute error (AE), variable error (VE) and a relative timing measure (AE(prop.)). The main effects that there was a blocked advantage during retention. In addition, a 100% estimation advantage existed for AE and VE, but was not present for …

A Noise Detection, Noise-Motion Separation And A Cancer Recognition Theory And Algorithm, Alexander Popovich Jan 2002

A Noise Detection, Noise-Motion Separation And A Cancer Recognition Theory And Algorithm, Alexander Popovich

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we describe a noise detection and a motion-noise separation algorithm, as well as the stochastic properties of the noise. The difference between corresponding pixels subject to one type of noise, of two frames, has mean vector equal to (0,0,0), and variance covariance matrix with relatively small variances, for the (R, G, B) difference values. The other type of noise is a result of disturbance of the light equilibrium due to motion in neighboring or nearby pixels. In this type of noise the mean of the difference is non-zero. Every pixel not included in the one type of …

Bird Perches And Soil Amendments As Revegetation Techniques For Landslides In Puerto Rico, Aaron Blakely Shiels Jan 2002

Bird Perches And Soil Amendments As Revegetation Techniques For Landslides In Puerto Rico, Aaron Blakely Shiels

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Landslides represent one of the most severe natural disturbances in tropical rainforests. The loss of the topsoil layer is detrimental to plant establishment and plant succession as it contains the soil seed bank, as well as the majority of the nutrients essential for plant growth. In this study, I introduced bird perches to six Puerto Rican landslides with three types of surfaces (bare, climbing fern, grass) to test the limitation of bird-dispersed forest seeds in landslides and to accelerate forest seedling establishment. I also mixed four soil amendments (Cecropia leaves, Cyathea fronds, forest soil, and commercial fertilizer) in five recent …

Negotiation And Autonomy In A Fast Food Restaurant, Eric Orion Silva Jan 2002

Negotiation And Autonomy In A Fast Food Restaurant, Eric Orion Silva

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study is an attempt to apply the negotiated order perspective to the analysis of the lived experience of workers in two franchised fast food restaurants. Drawing primarily on the work of Anselm Strauss (1978) and D. H. J. Morgan (1975), I have examined data taken from auto-ethnographic and overt observation. I found that workers in different negotiation contexts would use implicit and explicit negotiation to achieve internal and external goals. Worker's negotiation strategies depended on the actor's individual proclivities and their interpretation of the negotiation context. Issues subject to negotiation included wages, the schedule, the amount of effort expended, …

Food Safety Knowledge And Safe Practice Attitudes Of Employees In Fine Dining And Quick Service Restaurants, Jee Hye Shin Jan 2002

Food Safety Knowledge And Safe Practice Attitudes Of Employees In Fine Dining And Quick Service Restaurants, Jee Hye Shin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The foodservice industry has a responsibility to provide safe food to all customers. Food safety and foodborne illness (FBI) prevention, therefore, have become a primary concern in the foodservice industry. The first step in this food safety chain is employee awareness of food safety procedures to mitigate the potential of causing FBI if correct procedures are not practiced; The purpose of this study was to examine whether a difference in food safety knowledge and attitudes exists between fine dining restaurant and quick service restaurant (QSR) employees. The relationship between attitudes toward food safety and food safety knowledge was also examined …

The Study And Optimization Of The Enzyme Inhibition Bioassay 96 For The Detection Of Organophosphate And Carbamate Compounds, Stephen Christopher Twomey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Faster, simpler, and more cost-effective held screening tools can increase the amount of information available concerning the location, source, and/or concentration of pollutants present in the environment. The Enzyme Inhibition Bioassay 96 (EIB 96) is one such field-screening tool; The EIB 96 is an assay that can detect the presence of organophosphate and carbamate compounds, providing scientists with valuable information to focus their future sampling efforts. The assay is based on the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase by organophosphate and carbamate compounds. The organophosphate and carbamate compounds that were used in this project were the pesticides carbaryl, chlorpyrifos, diazinon, dichlorvos, …

Power And Political Process: The Case Of The Ivanpah Airport, Amy Gayle Walker Jan 2002

Power And Political Process: The Case Of The Ivanpah Airport, Amy Gayle Walker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines power and political processes involved in the decision to construct a second commercial airport for Las Vegas, NV and the southern Nevada region. Using interview data and document analysis I argue that the organizational capacity of the state and its relative autonomy enabled state actors to dominate the airport's development process by defining the need and setting the agenda for the project. Additionally, state officials acquired the land for the project by circumventing established mechanisms for public participation and involvement. The findings support a state-centered approach to understanding who wields power and how in political processes. Ultimately, …

Two Non-Specific Indicators Of Stress: Enamel Hypoplasia And Harris Lines, Marta Pilar Alfonso Durruty Jan 2002

Two Non-Specific Indicators Of Stress: Enamel Hypoplasia And Harris Lines, Marta Pilar Alfonso Durruty

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Harris lines (HL) and enamel hypoplasia (EH) are two non-specific indicators of stress, commonly used in the reconstruction of the health status in past and present populations. The aim of this study was to determine if there is a correlation between these two markers. To achieve this aim, a sample of 136 individuals from two archaeological sites (Az-71 and Az-l40) from northern Chile was analyzed. HL and EH showed no correlation in terms of presence absence at the individual level. In addition, HL and EH, by age of the individual at the time of the defect formation, showed a completely …
