Cross-Examining Expertise In The Wto Dispute Settlement Process, Christopher T. Timura Jan 2002

Cross-Examining Expertise In The Wto Dispute Settlement Process, Christopher T. Timura

Michigan Journal of International Law

Part I of this Note surveys some of the recent contributions that social theorists and social scientists have made to our understanding of the role of experts in society, and also the structure of expert communities. Experts are everywhere in modern life, and individuals are with increasing frequency asked to extend their trust to experts and bodies of knowledge that they have little or no opportunity to question. Part II highlights how the WTO Agreement deals with experts, using recent WTO panel reports to illustrate the ways in which the DSB has operationalized its various provisions. Part III suggests two …

Evaluation Of Several Metrics Of Benthic Macroinvertibrates, Scott Lynch Jan 2002

Evaluation Of Several Metrics Of Benthic Macroinvertibrates, Scott Lynch

Open Access Master's Theses

This study simulates individuals that are modeled after benthic macroinvertebrate populations from streams in Vermont. Using the EPA biological scoring criteria for assessing the overall condition of streams, we analyzed two metrics (parameters) associated with these criteria. The two metrics, taxa richness and Community Loss Index (CLI) have "critical" values that were set by the EPA. These "critical" values although well established are not be justified statistically. In order to analyze these "critical" values, we analyzed three different options: sample size, taxonomic level, and changing the "critical" value to achieve our goal.

We asked the question, how often would two …

Lecithin Organogel-Based System For Topical Application Of Ketorolac Tromethamine, Angela Attar Nasseri Jan 2002

Lecithin Organogel-Based System For Topical Application Of Ketorolac Tromethamine, Angela Attar Nasseri

Open Access Master's Theses

Among various nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), ketorolac tromethamine has been widely used for post operative and emergency treatment of pain. However, it accompanies adverse side effects including gastrointestinal irritation when administered orally. Topical administration of ketorolac offers the advantage of enhanced drug delivery to the affected sites with a reduced incidence of gastrointestinal side effects. However, as skin is an exceptionally effective barrier to most chemicals, very few drugs can permeate it in amounts sufficient to deliver a therapeutic dose. Therefore, systems that make the skin locally more permeable and thereby enable transdermal delivery are of great interest. Lecithin organogels …

Disc Golf: Sport For Sustainable Community, Craig Hotchkiss Jan 2002

Disc Golf: Sport For Sustainable Community, Craig Hotchkiss

Open Access Master's Theses

This project, Disc Golf: Sport for Sustainable Community, aims to promote the sport of disc golf as an environmentally reverent and cost effective, recreational opportunity for a sustainable community. This paper also suggests enhancements to the signs and maps of a disc golf course in order to include environmental interpretation aspects into the recreational facility. Reviewing the material will enable a community to determine potential disc course locations and designs.

This project describes the sport of disc golf to introduce the principal concepts for those who may be unfamiliar with the sport. In the United States, The President's Council on …

Green Mapping Pawtuxet Village, Rhode Island: A Community Sustainabilty Assessment, Andrea Mcneill Underwood Jan 2002

Green Mapping Pawtuxet Village, Rhode Island: A Community Sustainabilty Assessment, Andrea Mcneill Underwood

Open Access Master's Theses

Sustainability, while it is a global movement, is not well understood by the public. The main goals of this project were to develop a process to educate community residents in Pawtuxet Village, Rhode Island about sustainability across scales (local, state, region, nation and beyond) and to help a community to create a definition and vision of sustainability locally.

Two main tools were used. First, a series of workshops was organized to teach a community group about sustainability and to suggest ways in which it might apply to their own community. Second, a Green Mapping system was used to develop a …

Distribution Of Clinostomum Marginatum (Yellow Grub) Metacercaria In Smallmouth Bass Populations From Crooked Creek In North Central Arkansas, James J. Daly, Bruce Deyoung, Terryl L. Hostetler, Randal J. Keller

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Four hundred thirty-three smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) were collected from ten sites on Crooked Creek in North Central Arkansas from just below the city of Harrison to the White River in the summers of 1988-90. Necropsy of these hosts for yellow grub (Clinostomum marginatum) metacercariae showed a range of mean abundance (average/fish) from 1.4 ±1.9 (SD) at a far up stream site to 105 ± 368 at the White River juncture. An increasing mean abundance of C. marginatum was seen from the uppermost sites of the creek downstream to the White River. Relating stream mileage with mean abundance gave a …

Modeling Of Electrofusion Coils For Performance Optimization, Steve Farmer, Robert A. Sims Jan 2002

Modeling Of Electrofusion Coils For Performance Optimization, Steve Farmer, Robert A. Sims

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Modeling physical parameters provides a virtual design environment allowing the confirmation and optimization of electrofusion characteristics. Finite element incorporate physical parameters and their interactions along common boundaries defined within a model geometry. The electrofusion of polymeric piping is a widely accepted means of assembling piping systems with zero-leakage integrity. The key parameters in the fusion process are the coil resistance, the current passing through the coil and the time the current is applied. Modeling the coil and applying current to the model is accomplished using the MATLABpartial differential equations (PDE) toolbox. This paper presents the method of modeling and the …

Fire Effects On Three Trophic Levels In A Central Arkansas Grassland, Laura Skelton, Amy Polk, Brenna C. Fitzgerald, Matthew D. Moran Jan 2002

Fire Effects On Three Trophic Levels In A Central Arkansas Grassland, Laura Skelton, Amy Polk, Brenna C. Fitzgerald, Matthew D. Moran

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We studied the effect of a late growing-season fire on the plant and foliar arthropod communities in a naturally occurring grassland. In central Arkansas, these grasslands are common on south-facing slopes where shallow soils and hot/dry weather conditions during the summer cannot support the growth of a forest community. Patches of grassland were burned in the autumn (4 November, late growing season), often the time of natural fires in Arkansas, and compared to unburned areas. Fire increased the biomass of forbs and decreased the biomass of grasses, although overall biomass was not different between treatments. Among the foliar arthropods, herbivores …

Epidermal Papilloma In An Ozark Hellbender (Cryptobranchus Alleganiensis Bishopi) From The Spring River Of Northwest Arkansas, Stanley E. Trauth, John C. Harshbarger, Patrick Daniel

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

An Ozark hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis bishopi) with multiple, large, warty skin lesions was collected in the Spring River, Fulton County, Arkansas, in 1994. The specimen was a female, 560 mm in total length, and had a mass of 1,947 g. Tissues were formalin-fixed, and three lesions were processed for histopathology. The normal skin at the tumor margins had a stratified squamous epidermis overlying a loose, well-vascularized, heavily pigmented dermis. Poison glands and mucous glands extended from the epidermis into the dermis. The lesions, in contrast, were masses of epidermal cells up to 100 times thicker than the normal epidermis. They …

Bats Of The Jessieville Ranger District, Ouachita National Forest, Arkansas, C. Renn Tumlison, Tobin Fulmer, Tommy Finley, David A. Saugey

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

During July and August 2000 and 2001, mist nets were set concentrated on three drainages in the Jessieville District of the Ouachita National Forest: North Fork Ouachita River (ten sites), Irons Fork Creek (five sites), and Muddy Creek (two sites). A total of 83 bats representing seven species was caught during 20 evenings (43 net nights). Sampled habitats included pools in road ruts, intermittent streams, man-made ponds on ridgelines, a wet road rut fed by a seep, small drainages that flowed only after a heavy rain, a standing pool in a clearing, and larger streams. Eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis) …

Analysis Of Stormwater Policy: Rogue River Watershed, Kent County Michigan, Mike Buth Jan 2002

Analysis Of Stormwater Policy: Rogue River Watershed, Kent County Michigan, Mike Buth

McNair Scholars Journal

When people think of water pollution, the image of a large pipe discharging a toxic chemical from a factory probably comes to mind. This type is classified as point-source pollution and in the past accounted for many water pollution problems. Today it is regulated and is not as large of a problem as it had been. Now we are facing different problems that are not quite so easy to see. Increased amounts of stormwater runoff in developing and urbanized areas are discharged into rivers and streams, carrying many different types of pollutants into the water from many different sources spread …

Societal Response To Developmental Differences And Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Outcomes, Randall R. Osborne Jan 2002

Societal Response To Developmental Differences And Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Outcomes, Randall R. Osborne

McNair Scholars Journal

Recent findings indicate an increased concern that conventional substance abuse treatment models consistently reflect less than satisfactory outcomes when applied to adolescents. This study investigates developmental differences among adolescents and adults as a possible cause of the disparity. The author conducted interviews with substance abuse professionals, developmental psychologists, adolescents in treatment, and adolescents no less than six months out of treatment. Questions focus on assessment agendas, developmental and motivational differences among adolescents and adults, movement along the addiction continuum, developmental tasks of adolescence, and adolescent receptivity. The results of the interviews among each group are compared and consistencies are noted. …

Resistance Of The Tick Dermacentor Variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae) Following Challenge With The Bacterium Escherichia Coli (Enterobacteriales: Enterobacteriaceae), Shane M. Ceraul, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Wayne L. Hynes

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In addition to a soluble response, many invertebrates control bacterial infections by means of phagocytosis or melanotic encapsulation. In some insects, Escherichia coli growth is reported to be inhibited by aggregation/encapsulation. Soluble and phagocytic responses to bacterial challenge have been reported in ticks, but evidence of an aggregation/encapsulation response was reported only for inanimate (araldite) implants. Ticks were challenged by direct inoculation of bacteria into the hemocoel cavity. By plating, no viable E. coli were detected 6 h postinoculation. A direct fluorescence assay (DFA) revealed aggregated bacteria 1 h postinoculation. Furthermore, DFA showed aggregated bacteria at 6, 24, and 48 …
