Bacillus Anthracis Spore Concentrations At Various Carcass Sites, Pamala Rose Coker Jan 2002

Bacillus Anthracis Spore Concentrations At Various Carcass Sites, Pamala Rose Coker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Bacillus anthracis, the etiological agent of the disease anthrax, is a bacteria of great importance, both in the past and today. Despite this importance, many questions remain regarding defending against its use as a biological weapon, the bacteria's variation in virulence, and its epidemiology in nature. Using Etest strips (AB BIODISK, Solna, Sweden) to measure the MICs, 25 genetically diverse isolates of B. anthracis were tested to determine their susceptibility to seven clinically relevant antimicrobial agents. Using the NCCLS MIC breakpoints for staphylococci, three isolates were found to be resistant to penicillin and negative for beta-lactamase production. From a group …

Antipredator Conditioning In Mississippi Sandhill Cranes (Grus Canadensis Pulla), Jennifer Jill Heatley Jan 2002

Antipredator Conditioning In Mississippi Sandhill Cranes (Grus Canadensis Pulla), Jennifer Jill Heatley

LSU Master's Theses

The Mississippi Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis pulla), the most endangered North American crane, is considered critically endangered and is protected by Federal and State law. Substantial funding has established the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge in Southern Mississippi and an artificial insemination / breeding facility at the Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species in New Orleans, Louisiana to promote species recovery. In spite of extensive time, labor, and money invested in captive propagation, juvenile Mississippi Sandhill Cranes suffer substantial mortality due to predation by bobcats (Lynx rufus), coyotes (Canis latrans) and red tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) upon reintroduction …

Sorority Rituals : Rites Of Passage And Their Impact On Contemporary Sorority Women, Mari Ann Callais Jan 2002

Sorority Rituals : Rites Of Passage And Their Impact On Contemporary Sorority Women, Mari Ann Callais

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Very little research has been conducted to assess the effects of sorority membership on undergraduate sorority women. While there have been numerous studies conducted concerning fraternity men, there has been limited research concerning sorority women only and no studies that explore the effects of ritual on the sorority experience. Does ritual have an impact on the values and behavior of contemporary sorority women? Addressing this question requires an in-depth understanding of the role of the sorority experience and examination of the experience to determine if it provides to its membership what it is intended to provide. Based on research conducted …

Attachment Object Effects On Children's Anxiety During School-Related Transitions, Lauriann M. Jones Jan 2002

Attachment Object Effects On Children's Anxiety During School-Related Transitions, Lauriann M. Jones

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Because a child's first day of school can be anxiety provoking, familiar soothing inanimate objects, such as blankets, might help to minimize discomfort related to this novel situation. The current study examined the anxiety level of twenty-six one- to four-year-old children and their mothers at three times 1) before the first day of school, 2) during separation from their mother on the first day of school, and 3) after home from their first day of school. Maternal report was used to assess child and mother anxiety levels (Likert scale 0- 10) and child level of attachment to a familiar inanimate …

Effects Of Fire Frequency And The Red Imported Fire Ant On Native Insects In A Louisiana Longleaf Pine Savanna, Deanna M. Colby

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Ants and ground beetles were collected in pitfall traps from a longleaf pine savanna in the early stages of restoration. Insect abundance and species richness were compared among four treatment combinations of two fire frequencies and presence and absence of an exotic ant, Solenopsis invicta, the red imported fire ant. Amdro® was used to suppress S. invicta. Fire treatments consisted of a single fire in a two year period or two fires in a two year period, one applied each year. Fires were applied late in the growing season both years. Ten of the 28 ground beetle species …

Pathogenic Mechanisms Of Photobacterium Damselae Subspecies Piscicida In Hybrid Striped Bass, Ahmad A. Elkamel

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Photobacterium damselae subspecies piscicida, previously known as Pasteurella piscicida, is an important pathogen of hybrid striped bass and many fish species cultured in brackish water in the United States, Japan, Europe, and the Mediterranean. The purpose of this study is to investigate virulence mechanisms that contribute to the pathogenesis of this organism. The ability of P. damselae to survive/replicate within hybrid striped bass macrophages was evaluated with an in vitro killing assay. Results indicated that the numbers of bacteria recovered from macrophages at 3, 6, 12, and 18 hours of incubation increased significantly over time. In contrast, the numbers of …

Molecular Phylogeny Of Melanospora And Diaporthales, And Population Genetics Of Dogwood Anthracnose Fungus, Ning Zhang Jan 2002

Molecular Phylogeny Of Melanospora And Diaporthales, And Population Genetics Of Dogwood Anthracnose Fungus, Ning Zhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Unresolved phylogenetic problems in pyrenomycetes and population structure of an asexual plant pathogen (Discula destructiva) were investigated. Analyses based on DNA sequences of nuclear encoded small and large subunit RNA genes (SSU and LSU nrDNA) and deduced amino acid sequences of a subunit of RNA polymerase II gene (RPB2) indicated that five genera previously considered in Ceratostomataceae of Sordariales were related to Hypocreales. Melanospora (including the type) and a genus of Ceratostomataceae formed a basal clade, but monophyly of the five genera and of the genus Melanospora was rejected. Discula destructiva and four other Discula species were derived from within …

Quality can be designed into online courses by focusing on complex tasks, using multiple perspectives, establishing a learning community, encouraging the social negotiation of meaning and providing assistance for learners at various levels. While good design can go a long way to ensure quality in online courses, the quality of the …

The Established And Potential Mediating Variables In The Child's Understanding Of Advertising Intent: Towards A Research Agenda, Margaret-Anne Lawlor, Andrea Prothero Jan 2002

The Established And Potential Mediating Variables In The Child's Understanding Of Advertising Intent: Towards A Research Agenda, Margaret-Anne Lawlor, Andrea Prothero

Articles

This paper aims to explore in detail the issue of advertising intent, with particular reference to the child. The literature review examines the importance of age, and cognitive and social development in this field, and considers whether or not children can distinguish between television programming and advertising. What the literature review illustrates is that research studies thus far have conflicting viewpoints on these areas. Within the research to date, there are also a number of important issues which do not seem to be addressed. Most notably, there is little research which considers the impact of advertising upon children, from the …

Production Of Transgenic Goats By Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer, Brett C. Reggio Jan 2002

Production Of Transgenic Goats By Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer, Brett C. Reggio

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A series of experiments were conducted to produce transgenic goats by somatic cell nuclear transfer (NT). In all experiments, donor cells were electrically fused to enucleated metaphase II oocytes, then chemically activated. In a preliminary study to evaluate embryonic development following NT with proliferating or quiescent fibroblast or cumulus cells, significantly more embryos reconstructed with quiescent cumulus cells fused (77%) compared with proliferating cumulus cells (41%), proliferating fibroblasts (36%) or quiescent fibroblasts (37%). Improved development to the eight- to sixteen-cell stage was observed when fibroblast cells were serum starved (serum starved 39% vs. serum fed 15%). However, there was no …

Researching The History Of Software: Mining Internet Resources In The "Old World," "New World,"And The "Wild West", Philip Frana Jan 2002

Researching The History Of Software: Mining Internet Resources In The "Old World," "New World,"And The "Wild West", Philip Frana

Selected Works

So wrote the great philosopher and poet Jorge Augustín Nicolás Ruiz de Santayana in his essay" The Elements and Function of Poetry."[1] Without doubt, the advent of the early Web unleashed a mania, an unreasonable recklessness that to this day resists being swept back under the rug. How can we tease" sanity" out of the Web? Can the historian put this madness to good use?

Lessons From Martin: The Ada And Athletics Don't Mix, Thomas E. Green Jan 2002

Lessons From Martin: The Ada And Athletics Don't Mix, Thomas E. Green

Journal of Law and Health

Martin is a professional golfer in his twenties who is stricken by Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber Syndrome. This disability makes it medically impossible for him to play golf without the use of a golf cart. Martin sued the PGA Tour in 1997 after his request to use a golf cart in a tour event was denied. The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the Ninth Circuit's ruling allowing Martin to use a golf cart for PGA events. In another case, after initially allowing the golfer, Olinger, to compete in the qualifying rounds, the District Court, and subsequently the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, …

A Jurisprudential Analysis Of Government Intervention And Prenatal Drug Abuse, Susan Fortney Jan 2002

A Jurisprudential Analysis Of Government Intervention And Prenatal Drug Abuse, Susan Fortney

Journal of Law and Health

This article takes a different approach in considering the problem of prenatal drug abuse. After briefly discussing government intervention and constitutional issues, this article will consider the concept of duty and correlative rights. This discussion of duty and correlative rights suggests that the government can take measures to curb prenatal drug use without recognizing fetal rights. The article concludes with a discussion of the utility of criminal legislation as compared to public health legislation that treats drug addiction as a disease requiring treatment. As formulated, the proposal for public health legislation is not based on any concept of fetal rights. …

The Roma Of Eastern Europe In Transition: Historical Marginalization, Misrepresentation, And Political Ethnogenesis, Michael Bobick Jan 2002

The Roma Of Eastern Europe In Transition: Historical Marginalization, Misrepresentation, And Political Ethnogenesis, Michael Bobick

Honors Papers

This thesis primarily deals with how the ongoing political transformations in Central and Eastern Europe have affected one particular group, the Roma or Gypsies. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, many initially greeted the radical reconfiguration of hegemonic governmental structures with nationalist zeal, and the democratization of socialist regimes was universally hailed as a victory for all. But for the Roma, a historically persecuted pariah group continually surrounded by misconceptions and Orientalist stereotypes, the radical transformation to "Western" capitalism and democracy must not be viewed in such a positive light. As an ethnic group the Roma exhibit a wide-ranging …

All Hands Withdrawn: Touch And The Failure Of Intimacy In A Passage To India And The Pisan Cantos, Douglas Diesenhaus Jan 2002

All Hands Withdrawn: Touch And The Failure Of Intimacy In A Passage To India And The Pisan Cantos, Douglas Diesenhaus

Honors Papers

Have there ever been two more dissimilar writers in literary history than E.M. Forster and Ezra Pound? Forster, fatherless from the age of twenty-two months, educated in the British public school system and at Cambridge, influenced by the Apostles and the Bloomsbury group, wrote from within the shaping pressures of English tradition. In pictures and paintings, he appears always out of place or fatigued, with his head falling back against a cushion or chair. With his slight build, dainty style, and small, roundish head projecting forward into his nose, he fails to cut much of a figure next to the …

Inheriting A Jewish Consciousness: Reading With A Sense Of Urgency In George Eliot's Daniel Deronda, Joshua Mason Jan 2002

Inheriting A Jewish Consciousness: Reading With A Sense Of Urgency In George Eliot's Daniel Deronda, Joshua Mason

Honors Papers

Forever circled in pen, marked off from the surrounding text, this passage remains months later, my point of entry into Daniel Deronda (1876), George Eliot's final novel; a work ambitious in scope and resistant to definition, both celebrated and dismissed for its portrayal of Jews. Following his return from the Continent, his Jewish ancestry having been fully disclosed, Deronda describes this "inherited yearning" to Mordecai in terms that seem to suggest a heritable principle of racial or spiritual identity:

"Suppose the stolen offspring of some mountain tribe brought up on a city of the plain, or one with an inherited …

Cross-Examining Expertise In The Wto Dispute Settlement Process, Christopher T. Timura Jan 2002

Cross-Examining Expertise In The Wto Dispute Settlement Process, Christopher T. Timura

Michigan Journal of International Law

Part I of this Note surveys some of the recent contributions that social theorists and social scientists have made to our understanding of the role of experts in society, and also the structure of expert communities. Experts are everywhere in modern life, and individuals are with increasing frequency asked to extend their trust to experts and bodies of knowledge that they have little or no opportunity to question. Part II highlights how the WTO Agreement deals with experts, using recent WTO panel reports to illustrate the ways in which the DSB has operationalized its various provisions. Part III suggests two …

Evaluation Of Several Metrics Of Benthic Macroinvertibrates, Scott Lynch Jan 2002

Evaluation Of Several Metrics Of Benthic Macroinvertibrates, Scott Lynch

Open Access Master's Theses

This study simulates individuals that are modeled after benthic macroinvertebrate populations from streams in Vermont. Using the EPA biological scoring criteria for assessing the overall condition of streams, we analyzed two metrics (parameters) associated with these criteria. The two metrics, taxa richness and Community Loss Index (CLI) have "critical" values that were set by the EPA. These "critical" values although well established are not be justified statistically. In order to analyze these "critical" values, we analyzed three different options: sample size, taxonomic level, and changing the "critical" value to achieve our goal.

We asked the question, how often would two …

Lecithin Organogel-Based System For Topical Application Of Ketorolac Tromethamine, Angela Attar Nasseri Jan 2002

Lecithin Organogel-Based System For Topical Application Of Ketorolac Tromethamine, Angela Attar Nasseri

Open Access Master's Theses

Among various nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), ketorolac tromethamine has been widely used for post operative and emergency treatment of pain. However, it accompanies adverse side effects including gastrointestinal irritation when administered orally. Topical administration of ketorolac offers the advantage of enhanced drug delivery to the affected sites with a reduced incidence of gastrointestinal side effects. However, as skin is an exceptionally effective barrier to most chemicals, very few drugs can permeate it in amounts sufficient to deliver a therapeutic dose. Therefore, systems that make the skin locally more permeable and thereby enable transdermal delivery are of great interest. Lecithin organogels …

Green Mapping Pawtuxet Village, Rhode Island: A Community Sustainabilty Assessment, Andrea Mcneill Underwood Jan 2002

Green Mapping Pawtuxet Village, Rhode Island: A Community Sustainabilty Assessment, Andrea Mcneill Underwood

Open Access Master's Theses

Sustainability, while it is a global movement, is not well understood by the public. The main goals of this project were to develop a process to educate community residents in Pawtuxet Village, Rhode Island about sustainability across scales (local, state, region, nation and beyond) and to help a community to create a definition and vision of sustainability locally.

Two main tools were used. First, a series of workshops was organized to teach a community group about sustainability and to suggest ways in which it might apply to their own community. Second, a Green Mapping system was used to develop a …
