Resistance Of The Tick Dermacentor Variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae) Following Challenge With The Bacterium Escherichia Coli (Enterobacteriales: Enterobacteriaceae), Shane M. Ceraul, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Wayne L. Hynes

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In addition to a soluble response, many invertebrates control bacterial infections by means of phagocytosis or melanotic encapsulation. In some insects, Escherichia coli growth is reported to be inhibited by aggregation/encapsulation. Soluble and phagocytic responses to bacterial challenge have been reported in ticks, but evidence of an aggregation/encapsulation response was reported only for inanimate (araldite) implants. Ticks were challenged by direct inoculation of bacteria into the hemocoel cavity. By plating, no viable E. coli were detected 6 h postinoculation. A direct fluorescence assay (DFA) revealed aggregated bacteria 1 h postinoculation. Furthermore, DFA showed aggregated bacteria at 6, 24, and 48 …

Age And Growth Of Largemouth Bass At Freshwater Lagoon, Humboldt County, California, Stephen Will Pagliughi

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The quality of the largemouth bass fishery at Freshwater Lagoon was evaluated by assessing age structure, stock structure, condition, and growth characteristics. A total of 1,511 largemouth bass was sampled from 1986 through 2000 using a boat electroshocker. Scales were collected from 706 fish and assigned ages. Eleven age classes were identified with a maximum age of 10 years. Age assignment precision between two readings was 95%. Paired scale and otolith (sagittae) samples were collected via hook-and-line from 20 largemouth bass in spring and early summer of 2002. The agreement rate of age determination between structures was used as a …

A Comparison Of Spatial And Temporal Patterns In Epiphytic Macroagal Assemlages Of The Seagrasses Amphibolis And Posidonia Coriacea, Paul Lavery, Mathew Vanderklift

Research outputs pre 2011

Studies of patterns in assemblages of epiphytic macroalgae growing on seagrasses have largely focussed at the scale of leaves or shoots. Few have examined patterns at larger spatial scales or the influence of host seagrass type on these patterns, despite interest in monitoring changes in epiphyte composition that can lead to the death of seagrasses. We studied spatial patterns in assemblages of epiphytic macroalgae on 2 seagrass species with different morphologies and longevity, Amphibolis griffithii and Posidonia coriacea, which co-occur on Success Bank, Western Australia. Epiphyte assemblages were described for each species at a hierarchy of spatial scales (sites separated …

Barriers To Creativity In The Conceptual Phase Of Engineering Design : Perceptions Of Designers At Rolls Royce Aerospace (Bristol) In New Projects Engineering, Rachel Amanda Jane Carkett Jan 2002

Barriers To Creativity In The Conceptual Phase Of Engineering Design : Perceptions Of Designers At Rolls Royce Aerospace (Bristol) In New Projects Engineering, Rachel Amanda Jane Carkett

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Anecdotal evidence from experienced engineers suggest that barriers to creativity are often due to the limitations of current technology, methods and support systems (Baird, Moore, & Jagodzinski, 2000). The aim of this research was to explore what the perceived barriers to creativity are and how they are circumvented by design engineers working in New Projects Engineering (NPE), Rolls-Royce Aerospace (Bristol). Semi-structured interviews with four employees working in engineering design comprised a Scoping Study. This provided a general overview of the major issues perceived by the design engineers regarding barriers to creativity and resulted in six themes being identified. These themes …

Pitch Estimation For Noisy Speech, Azar Khurshid Jan 2002

Pitch Estimation For Noisy Speech, Azar Khurshid

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

In this dissertation a biologically plausible system of pitch estimation is proposed. The system is designed from the bottom up to be robust to challenging noise conditions. This robustness to the presence of noise in the signal is achieved by developing a new representation of the speech signal, based on the operation of damped harmonic oscillators, and temporal mode analysis of their output. This resulting representation is shown to possess qualities which are not degraded in presence of noise. A harmonic grouping based system is used to estimate the pitch frequency. A detailed statistical analysis is performed on the system, …

Insights Into The Nature Of Retroviral Replication And Infection: Analyses Of Minus-Strand Dna Transfer, Double Infection, And Virion And Rna Dimer Maturation., Que Dang Jan 2002

Insights Into The Nature Of Retroviral Replication And Infection: Analyses Of Minus-Strand Dna Transfer, Double Infection, And Virion And Rna Dimer Maturation., Que Dang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Retroviruses are a family of RNA viruses that replicate through DNA intermediates by reverse transcribing their genome. One of the essential steps of reverse transcription is minus-strand DNA transfer, during which nascent DNA switches template usage from the 5′ end to near the 3′ of the viral RNA genome. We have determined that minus-strand DNA transfer is homology driven; a minimum homology length is required to align the newly synthesized DNA with the 3′ RNA template to facilitate an efficient and accurate transfer. In addition to the obligatory template strand transfer events necessary to complete reverse transcription, template switching also …

The Life And Keyboard Works Of (Franz) Xaver Scharwenka (1850-1924), Michael Patrick Mihalyo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

(Franz) Xaver Scharwenka (1850-1924) was a highly acclaimed performer, teacher, editor, and composer of international fame during the late Romantic period. Overshadowed by the innovative styles of a number of contemporaneous composers including Ravel, Debussy, and Scriabin, Scharwenka's works gradually disappeared from the teaching studio and the concert hall. Regrettably, his compositions, although critically acclaimed in his lifetime, are now for the most part out of print and rarely performed. This study explores Scharwenka's works as a significant addition to the repertory of the late Romantic literature for study and performance. This research project, the result of a lengthy investigation …

Hate Crime In The Media: A Content Analysis Of "The Washington Post" And "The New York Times"., Jennifer Michelle Hatcher Jan 2002

Hate Crime In The Media: A Content Analysis Of "The Washington Post" And "The New York Times"., Jennifer Michelle Hatcher

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 1990, the United States Congress passed the Hate Crime Statistics Act (HCSA) which set into motion the development of a law-enforcement based data collection system aimed at learning more about “hate crimes.” By 1999 the term “hate crime” had become so widely used and recognizable that when news broke of the murders of Matthew Shephard, a University of Wyoming student who was brutally murdered because he was gay, and James L. Byrd, a disabled black man who was savagely murdered because of his race, the media understandably labeled these acts as “hate crimes.” In this paper the authors will …

Wheat, Wealth, And Western Maryland: The Growth And Evolution Of Flour Milling In Frederick County, Maryland, 1748-1789., John F. Kvach

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis explores the evolution of flourmills in Frederick County, Maryland within the context of the economic and social development of western Maryland from 1748-1789. Western Maryland’s development differed greatly from that of most other areas in Maryland. A large German immigrant population, along with English and Scottish settlers, settled the valleys, of present day Frederick County, during the eighteenth century. These settlers grew wheat and created a need for mills and millers. Economically, mills created prosperity by attracting new businesses and settlers to the frontier. Politically and socially, millers influenced a region often in conflict with the tobacco interests …

Women's Roles In Fairy Tales: A Comparison Of The Portrayal Of Women In "Marienkind" Of The Brothers Grimm And Benedikte Naubert's "Ottilie"., Astrid Munder Jan 2002

Women's Roles In Fairy Tales: A Comparison Of The Portrayal Of Women In "Marienkind" Of The Brothers Grimm And Benedikte Naubert's "Ottilie"., Astrid Munder

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Gender roles have always been and will always be, explicitly or implicitly, a topic of literature. The different ways in which gender roles are depicted in the literature of a given period reflect the political and societal state of affairs of that period. Literary works must therefore be critically analyzed to understand them in the context of their times. German fairy tales provide important examples of this. In this thesis I will examine the literary genre of the fairy tales in order to illustrate how differently female and male authors approached the topic of the woman’s role. To do so, …

Conceptual-Associative System In Aboriginal English : A Study Of Aboriginal Children Attending Primary Schools In Metropolitan Perth, Farzad Sharifian Jan 2002

Conceptual-Associative System In Aboriginal English : A Study Of Aboriginal Children Attending Primary Schools In Metropolitan Perth, Farzad Sharifian

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

National measures of achievement among Australian school children suggest that Aboriginal students, considered as a group, are those most likely to end their schooling without achieving minimal acceptable levels of literacy and numeracy. In view of the fact that many Aboriginal students dwell in metropolitan areas and speak English as a first language, many educators have been unconvinced that linguistic and cultural difference have been significant factors in this underachievement. This study explores the possibility that, despite intensive exposure to non-Aboriginal society, Aboriginal students in metropolitan Perth may maintain, through a distinctive variety of English, distinctive conceptualisation which may help …

Student Learning And Cognition In Cooperative Small Groups : Towards A Fourth Metaphor Of Human Learning, Scott C. Zehnder Jan 2002

Student Learning And Cognition In Cooperative Small Groups : Towards A Fourth Metaphor Of Human Learning, Scott C. Zehnder

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Research into the benefits of cooperative learning has focussed most attention onto a social psychological perspective with the result that the putative cognitive benefits of these strategies have not been thoroughly researched and clearly delineated. One consequence of this research focus has been that cooperative learning strategies are not always adopted by teachers and included permanently into their regular classroom practice, thereby possibly denying some students the potential for cognitive gain. This study was conceived originally as an investigation into the claimed cognitive benefits of small-group cooperative learning from a cognitive perspective but the investigation of the cooperative learning literature …

Feminism has made significant contributions to peace and justice and Greenwood’s social activism provides the opportunity to explore these links. The media are a powerful tool for social change. In a global climate where violence and warfare are the media’s currency, Irene Greenwood’s broadcasting career provides opportunities to explore the historical connections …

Mutation Detection For Genotype/Phenotype Correlation Studies In Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease, Marie Mccluskey Jan 2002

Mutation Detection For Genotype/Phenotype Correlation Studies In Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease, Marie Mccluskey

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is one of the most common genetic disorders (Gabow, 1993), with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 400 to 1 in 1000 (Dalgaard, 1957; Gabow, 1993). The disease is the fourth leading cause of renal failure with more than 10 million people affected worldwide (Grantham, 1997). Mutations in at least two genes (PKD1, PKD2) can lead to the disease (European PDK Consortium, 1994; Mochizuki, et al, 1996). This project deals with autosomal dominant PKD, caused by mutations in the PKD1 gene, which account for 85% of reported cases.

The Use Of Scaffolding To Improve Student Learning With Interactive Multimedia Programs In Chemistry, Brian T. Grimes Jan 2002

The Use Of Scaffolding To Improve Student Learning With Interactive Multimedia Programs In Chemistry, Brian T. Grimes

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The process of balancing and interpreting chemical equations involves the consideration of an abstract, non-observable phenomenon coupled with multi-level representation. Students find it conceptually demanding to visualise the particulate level of matter and hence experience difficulty in balancing chemical equations with understanding. Interactive multimedia with dynamic computer graphics can provide students with accurate, concrete representations of the particulate nature of matter. Such tools, when coupled with appropriate implementation strategies, have the potential to improve learning about chemical reactions. The study investigated the use of scaffolding techniques to enhance and direct student learning when using an interactive multimedia software (IMM) program, …

The global hospitality industry is currently facing many challenges from the external business environment. These include the effects of global recession, a downturn in overall trade and an increased demand for service excellence from a much more quality conscious clientele. A more recent challenge, however, relates to an increase in global awareness of environmental issues. Contemporary consumers require goods and services to be produced, or delivered, in environmentally friendly ways. As a result, managers are being forced to reconsider their business strategies and activities. Indeed a wide range of industries has already responded to consumers' dictates on conservation issues. It …
