Decentralized And Adaptive Sensor Data Routing, Mengxia Zhu Jan 2002

Decentralized And Adaptive Sensor Data Routing, Mengxia Zhu

LSU Master's Theses

Wireless sensor network (WSN) has been attracting research efforts due to the rapidly increasing applications in military and civilian fields. An important issue in wireless sensor network is how to send information in an efficient and adaptive way. Information can be directly sent back to the base station or through a sequence of intermediate nodes. In the later case, it becomes the problem of routing. Current routing protocols can be categorized into two groups, namely table-drive (proactive) routing protocols and source-initiated on-demand (reactive) routing. For ad hoc wireless sensor network, routing protocols must deal with some unique constraints such as …

Louisiana Mass Media Perceptions Of The Lsu Agcenter's Communications Effort, Robert James Soileau Jan 2002

Louisiana Mass Media Perceptions Of The Lsu Agcenter's Communications Effort, Robert James Soileau

LSU Master's Theses

LSU AgCenter Communications sends news stories and materials to all three major mass media for news - newspaper, radio and television - in the state of Louisiana. These news releases are designed to educate and inform the general public about LSU AgCenter programs and research through the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service and the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station. LSU AgCenter Communications wanted to know the effectiveness of its news effort in terms of usage by the media, and what was the media’s perception of the LSU AgCenter and the topics covered by communications. Three researcher-designed surveys were developed, one for each …

Approaches To Measuring The Frequency Of Achondroplasia And Hypochondroplasia Causing Fgfr-3 Mutations In Human Sperm, Andrew Timothy Daters Jan 2002

Approaches To Measuring The Frequency Of Achondroplasia And Hypochondroplasia Causing Fgfr-3 Mutations In Human Sperm, Andrew Timothy Daters

LSU Master's Theses

Achondroplasia and hypochondroplasia are two forms of skeletal dysplasias caused predominantly by single base mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 gene (FGFR-3). The mutation for achondroplasia is a G1138A/C substitution and the mutation for hypochondroplasia (occurring about 50% of the time) is a C1620A/G substitution. Recent genetic studies have shown that spontaneous mutations for achondroplasia and hypochondroplasia occur exclusively on the paternally derived chromosome, suggesting that these mutations occur preferentially during spermatogenesis. For unknown reasons, the mutation rates at these FGFR-3 nucleotides appear to occur at a much higher frequency than nucleotide specific mutation rates observed in other …

A Comparison Of Storm Hydrographs From Small Urban Watersheds With Different Land Use Patterns In Baton Rouge, Josey Wade Walker Jan 2002

A Comparison Of Storm Hydrographs From Small Urban Watersheds With Different Land Use Patterns In Baton Rouge, Josey Wade Walker

LSU Master's Theses

Statistics gathered by FEMA indicate that nine of ten federal disasters are related to flooding. Research has demonstrated that increases in flooding can be contributed to urbanization or the construction of new residential and commercial developments (Anderson, 1970; Arnold & Gibbons, 1996; Putnam, 1972). New development has two main problems associated with it. First is the increase in impervious surfaces due to new parking lots, buildings, and streets (Booth & Leavitt, 1999; Seaburn, 1969). Second is the elimination of natural vegetation, which reduces evapotranspiration and lowers the soil’s ability to absorb precipitation (Hewlett, 1982). This study first demonstrates the relationship …

Development Of A Magnetite Tracer Protocol For Seasonal Measurement Of Bed Sediment Biodiffusion Coefficients, Paul D. Libbers Jan 2002

Development Of A Magnetite Tracer Protocol For Seasonal Measurement Of Bed Sediment Biodiffusion Coefficients, Paul D. Libbers

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis describes the development of a particle tracer technique for making short-term, in situ measurements of aquatic bed sediment biodiffusion coefficients. The bioturbation process in the upper sediment layers of streams, lakes, estuaries, and the marine environment moves particles and porewater. When present, organic chemicals, metals, colloids, etc., are transported across these layers and exchanges may occur at the sediment-water interface. Fickian biodiffusion coefficients that characterize such particle movements, Db (cm2/yr), are used for assessing chemical diagenesis rates and contaminant fluxes and are specific to each site. Chemical Fate and Transport (CFaT) models, developed for tracking contaminants in aquatic …

Human Heir, Andrew Jay Saluti Jan 2002

Human Heir, Andrew Jay Saluti

LSU Master's Theses

Human heir catalogues the mechanism as living being through character and interaction. The life of basic machines such as hand tools and anvils is characterized by the interaction with other mechanical forms and the collaboration with their creator, the human machine. The concepts of function, personality, relevance, and existence are observed on seemingly lifeless elements, and the simplicity of the human mechanism is explored.

A Chemical View Of The Most Ancient Metazoa – Biomarker Chemotaxonomy Of Hexactinellid Sponges., Volker Thiel, Martin Blumenberg, Jens Hefter, Thomas Pape, Shirley A. Pomponi, John K. Reed, Joachim Reitner, Gert Worheide, Walter Michaelis Jan 2002

A Chemical View Of The Most Ancient Metazoa – Biomarker Chemotaxonomy Of Hexactinellid Sponges., Volker Thiel, Martin Blumenberg, Jens Hefter, Thomas Pape, Shirley A. Pomponi, John K. Reed, Joachim Reitner, Gert Worheide, Walter Michaelis

Faculty Scholarship

Hexactinellid sponges are often considered to be the most ancient metazoans. Lipid biomarkers from 23 species were studied for information on their phylogenetic properties, particularly their disputed relation to the two other sponge classes (Demospongiae, Calcarea). The most prominent lipid compounds in the Hexactinellida comprise C28 to C32 polyenoic fatty acids. Their structures parallel the unique patterns found in demosponge membrane fatty acids (‘demospongic acids’) and strongly support a close phylogenetic association of the Demospongiae and the Hexactinellida. Both taxa also show unusual mid-chain methylated fatty acids (C15–C25) and irregular C25- and C40-isoprenoid hydrocarbons, tracers for specific eubacteria and Archaea, …

Content Analysis Of Children’S Literature Depiction Of Modern Agriculture, David William Mixdorf Jan 2002

Content Analysis Of Children’S Literature Depiction Of Modern Agriculture, David William Mixdorf

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to investigate children's books and determine if they are portraying agricultural changes over the last 100 years, and whether the different revolutions of farming (horse, tractor, and technology) and alternative methods of farming are being represented.

The population of books examined were picture books, juvenile fiction, and informational books appropriate for K-6th grade. The population was limited to books published between 1982-2002, the United States as the geographical setting, and the main focus of the story was a farm setting. Fifty books were randomly selected from specific subject headings. The researcher discovered that modem …

The Effects Of Reading Poetry In Library Classes On Circulation Of The Library’S Poetry Collection, Mary Musselman Jan 2002

The Effects Of Reading Poetry In Library Classes On Circulation Of The Library’S Poetry Collection, Mary Musselman

Graduate Research Papers

Many of the elementary poetry books on the shelves of the Manson Northwest Webster Barnum Center library in Barnum, Iowa were not being checked out by students. By reading poetry from those books to third and fourth graders during library time the librarian hoped to stimulate interest in those poetry books and increase circulation of them. After keeping track of the poetry book circulation before and after reading poetry to the groups, the reading did in fact increase the circulation of the poetry books significantly at the .05 level.

Children In Pornography After Sharpe, Janine Benedet Jan 2002

Children In Pornography After Sharpe, Janine Benedet

Articles & Book Chapters

In its recent decision in R. v. Sharpe, the majority of the Supreme Court of Canada upheld the Criminal Code provisions prohibiting the possession and making of child pornography, subject to two exceptions. Despite a narrow construction of the definition of child pornography and a broad reading of the statutory defences, the majority found that prohibiting individuals from making and possessing some kinds of child pornography was an unjustifiable limit on the freedom of expression guaranteed by s. 2(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The dissent would have upheld the legislation in its entirety. This article argues …

The Northeast Pacific Globec Program: Coastal Gulf Of Alaska, Thomas J. Weingartner, Kenneth Coyle, Bruce Finney, Russell Hopcroft, Terry Whitledge, Richard Brodeur, Michael Dagg, Edward Farley, Dale Haidvogel, Thomas Royer

CCPO Publications

(First Paragraph) The Gulf of Alaska (GOA) continental shelf encompasses approximately 370,000 km2, or about 13% of the U.S. continental shell and supports a rich and diverse marine ecosystem including some of the largest commercial fisheries in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone. Of particular economic importance is the salmon fishery, which was worth on the order of $170 million (landed value) in 2000 accrued from a catch of over 100 million fish. However, there is considerable variability on both interannual and longer time scales in harvest and recruitment success to this and other GOA fisheries. Of recent interest …

Regulating Reproductive Technologies In Canada, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Albert Wallrap Jan 2002

Regulating Reproductive Technologies In Canada, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Albert Wallrap

Articles & Book Chapters

This chapter will identify and examine the major legal issues raised by the development and proliferation of technologies involved in assisted reproduction. It will review the application of existing legal principles, statutes and common law rules to these issues, and will illustrate the uncertainty present in the current legal regime in Canada. The chapter will then evaluate the need for a unified regulatory framework for reproductive technologies ("RTs").' While the focus of the chapter is an identification and review of the legal issues, it should be understood that these are shaped in a moral, ethical and social context.

De/Reconstructing Appearances: Lope De Vega's Inversion Of Female Beauty In The Rimas Humanas Y Divinas Del Licenciado Tome De Burguillos, Mark J. Mascia

Languages Faculty Publications

This article illustrates how Lope de Vega, in his Rimas Humanas y Divinas Del Licenciado Tome de Burguillos, subverts idealized female beauty through the glorification of a more commonplace feminine object, while the time-honored poetic conventions which favored the former are deconstructed and replaced by a new anti-norm of female objectification.

Mating Behaviors In Parasitic Wasps, Christine Landek Jan 2002

Mating Behaviors In Parasitic Wasps, Christine Landek

Honors Capstones

Mating behavior was examined in two species of parasitic wasps, Spalangia endius and Nasonia vitripennis. Contact, mounting, courting, and copulatory behavior were investigated for both species. Observations over reencounter behaviors were also examined. Male mate choice of virgin or mated females was looked at for N. vitripennis. N. vitripennis tended to initially contact both virgins and mated females. However, males copulated more with virgins. The behaviors that showed up most consistently in both species were wing fanning, leg tapping, and dorsal mounting. When the wasps would reencounter each other after copulation, S. endius would not court again, whereas N. vitripennis …

What About Us? Bringing Infertility Into Reproductive Health Care, Okonofua Friday, Bishakha Datta Jan 2002

What About Us? Bringing Infertility Into Reproductive Health Care, Okonofua Friday, Bishakha Datta

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Infertility is a major reproductive health problem throughout much of the world. Despite the prevalence and seriousness of infertility, the population and reproductive health field has largely neglected this problem. National policies and international donor organizations have been one-sided in their focus on programs designed to prevent unwanted pregnancies. This issue of Quality/Calidad/Qualité, with clinic-based narratives and case reports from India and Nigeria, illustrates what is involved in trying to address the problem of infertility in developing countries. A possible framework for incorporating limited infertility care into a family planning or reproductive health program includes providing education and counseling, preliminary …

Cancer Dose-Response Modeling Of Low Dose Radiation Exposure, Gizelle Susette Baker Jan 2002

Cancer Dose-Response Modeling Of Low Dose Radiation Exposure, Gizelle Susette Baker

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Many late effects from exposure to ionizing radiation, including cancers, have been described in the literature. The identification and quantification of radiation-induced health effects is an important and complex issue. Recommendations for radiation safety and protection from the International Commission on Radiological Protection are made using a linear no threshold risk model on epidemiological data. A major obstacle in this process is the limited availability of data to directly measure the health effects of radiation on human populations. One way to circumvent this problem IS to use experimental data from laboratory animals and extrapolate across species to man. The cancer …

Federal Judicial Selection In The Fourth Circuit, Carl W. Tobias Jan 2002

Federal Judicial Selection In The Fourth Circuit, Carl W. Tobias

Law Faculty Publications

Professor Tobias assesses federal judicial selection for the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and for North Carolina. His Essay ascertains that four of fifteen active judgeships that Congress has authorized for the court have remained vacant over a considerable period and that a seat designated for North Carolina has been unfilled for seven years. He finds that these judicial vacancies may affect the appellate justice which the Fourth Circuit delivers and that North Carolina deserves.

Some Theological Implications Of Two Catholic Responses In Care And Prevention To The Hiv/Aids Pandemic In Korea And The Philippines, Yong-Seong Roh Jan 2002

Some Theological Implications Of Two Catholic Responses In Care And Prevention To The Hiv/Aids Pandemic In Korea And The Philippines, Yong-Seong Roh

Theses

Dialogues with two Catholic institutions in Korea and the Philippines concerned with those suffering from AIDS and working to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS highlight the ambiguities and contradictions in both current knowledge and attitudes. Among the general public and church members there is considerable misunderstanding about the issues both the nature of the disease and the Church's moral teaching. Catholic institutions and secular based NGOs reveal the importance of interactive social networks in promoting positive responses in the face of widespread prejudice and stigmatization.

Suffering arising from HIV/AIDS presents a challenge to promote an ethics of relieving the misery …
