An Overview Of Bibliotherapy As An Intervention For Young Children, Lisa Ludwig Jan 2002

An Overview Of Bibliotherapy As An Intervention For Young Children, Lisa Ludwig

Graduate Research Papers

Young children can benefit from therapy to deal with disabilities, abuse, normal developmental issues such as famiily problems, and social-emotional issues. One approach to helping children manage psychological issues is bibliotherapy. In its simplest form, bibliotherapy can be described as the practice of using books in treatment, or helping with books (Pardeck & Pardeck, 1993; Pardeck & Pardeck, 1987). The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on bibliotherapy and to examine its possible applications, its effectiveness, and best practices in carrying out the intervention.

Teaching Nctm Standards Through Subject Areas In The Kindergarten Classroom, Elizabeth Tata O'Neil Jan 2002

Teaching Nctm Standards Through Subject Areas In The Kindergarten Classroom, Elizabeth Tata O'Neil

Graduate Research Papers

Teachers are being expected to provide a full range of experiences for their students. But in reality, many early childhood programs have reading readiness and literacy as the only focus. In many situations, mathematics instruction is an afterthought. Many students are not given quality instruction because little time in the school day is left, once language arts instruction is completed. This is even more true for students in half-day programs.

One way to alleviate this disparity is to incorporate math instruction within other subject areas. This can be achieved if teachers are educated in the National Council of Teachers of …

Mono And Multiphasic Analysis Of Growth Curves Selected Of A Japanese Quail Line At 5-Week's Body Weight, Handan Çamdevi̇ren, Bahar Taşdelen

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this research, monophasic, diphasic and triphasic logistic growth curve functions used to introduce the growing of the body weight in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) are presented. In male and female Japanese quail, the diphasic growth curve fits better than the other growth curves because of residual variance, autocorrelation and determination coefficients. In addition, the diphasic growth function is compared with the monophasic growth function to study the relationship between these two approaches for describing growth curves.

In The Dark Woods I Lost My Way, Debbie Kupinsky Jan 2002

In The Dark Woods I Lost My Way, Debbie Kupinsky

LSU Master's Theses

When I had journeyed half our life's way, I found myself in a shadowed forest. For I had Lost the path that does not stray Ah, it is hard to speak of what it was, That savage forest, dense and difficult, Which even in recall renews my fear: So bitter-death is hardly so severe! Dante Alegheri Inferno Canto 1 Dante's passage refers to the losing of a spiritual path, but for me it refers to the destruction of the past, memory and self. My work deals with the loss of the past and the burdens of memory. It deals with …

Characteristic Avifauna Of White-Sand Forests In Northern Peruvian Amazonia, Jose Alvarez Alonso Jan 2002

Characteristic Avifauna Of White-Sand Forests In Northern Peruvian Amazonia, Jose Alvarez Alonso

LSU Master's Theses

Recently, it has been shown that the high species richness in western Amazonia is related to habitat heterogeneity. Some habitats are rapidly disappearing or deteriorating as a result of anthropogenic activities, resulting in loss of species. One such unique habitat is white-sand forest (hereafter WSF), which is patchily distributed and restricted to a few areas in the northern Peruvian Amazonia. Although it is known that these unique forests are rich in endemic plants, very few studies of the fauna or ecology of these habitats have been conducted. I evaluated and determined the species composition of the avifauna of the white-sand …

This research project topic was selected because of the need for raised cultural awareness in elementary classrooms, as indicated in current research findings. I chose African-American literature because in this region of the United States, Iowa in particular, the classrooms tend to be largely homogenous. Children who are from African-American descent find themselves to be in the minority in their classroom settings.

These children are not seeing many other children like themselves in their school community. It is therefore important that they see themselves in the literature shared within this community, in order to help them to relate to their …

Literature Review : Using Humor With Children, Carol J. Aswegen Thornhill

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to explore and review the literature on humor, particularly as it relates to interactions with children. Often adults, whether they are parents or teachers, devalue the use of humor in dealing with children. Research supports that humor is a beneficial component of social interactions, especially with children. Studies have shown that children are receptive to humor beginning at very young ages, and that their sense of humor is developed and finely tuned as they mature. Findings show that by using humor in social situations, stress levels can be de-escalated, defensive reactions are reduced--which in …

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) have become a major health concern with the industrial revolution and technological advances. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently estimated the cost of MSDs at $13 to $20 billion annually. Back, spine, and spinal cord disorders add up to 60% of the total MSD injuries. Based on pervious studies, it is known that lumbar ligaments play a limited or little role in stabilizing the spine; where as the musculature around the spine is the major stabilizing structure. However, repetitive or prolonged static displacement or load induces creep in passive tissues of the spine …

Transformation Of Paradise: Geographical Perspectives On Tourism Development On A Small Carribbean Island (Utila, Honduras), Frances Heyward Currin Jan 2002

Transformation Of Paradise: Geographical Perspectives On Tourism Development On A Small Carribbean Island (Utila, Honduras), Frances Heyward Currin

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis addresses the recent development of tourism on Utila, the westernmost island of the Bay Islands of Caribbean, Honduras. Especially during the 1990s, international tourists, mostly Europeans and North Americans, were attracted to the island because it was a relatively inexpensive place to dive on a beautiful fringing reef and to enjoy other benefits of a tropical beach community. Larger nearby islands, Roatán and Guanaja, had developed something of a tourism industry earlier. A review of the economic and culture history of Utila reveals that modern islanders -- English-speaking Anglo- and Afro-Caribbeans originally from the Cayman Islands were preadapted …

Rum Aroma Descriptive Analysis, Sabina Maza Gomez Jan 2002

Rum Aroma Descriptive Analysis, Sabina Maza Gomez

LSU Master's Theses

Rum contains a large number of compounds that contribute to the complex aroma, some of which present in a very small amount. This fact represents a problem for the use of chemical analysis as a way to ascertain the quality of rum and to determine differences in rums products. Descriptive sensory analysis techniques can be useful in such circumstance, not only because they are easier to achieve, but because they give valuable information on the actual perceived aroma of the products. The first part of this work consisted of the development of lexicon for describing rums. A group of 5 …

In-Vitro Gene Disruption Using Tn7-Based Transposition: Evaluation Of Its Utility And Efficiency In Generating A Brucella Virb1 Knockout, Jeffrey W. Mercante

LSU Master's Theses

A Tn7-based transposition system carrying a kanamycin resistance gene has been used to disrupt a known virulence gene of Brucella melitensis 16M and Brucella abortus 2308 in-vitro. The suicide plasmid pBAvirB1::kan-29 was created, in part, by cloning the B. abortus virB1 gene into a vector that is not stably maintained in Brucella spp. The cloned virB1 gene was then mutagenized by in-vitro transposition of a Tn7-based transposon. This construct was used in-vivo to insert a disrupted virB1 gene in place of the wild type virB1 found in B. abortus 2308 and B. melitensis 16M by homologous recombination. The resulting virB1 …
