Narrative, Meaning Making And Personal Development: Teachers' Storied Experience In Montessori, Steiner And Other Primary Classrooms, Gayle C. Ward
Narrative, Meaning Making And Personal Development: Teachers' Storied Experience In Montessori, Steiner And Other Primary Classrooms, Gayle C. Ward
Theses
This study explored how narrative was being used to foster meaning-making in Montessori, Steiner, Government and Catholic schools. In-depth interviews of twelve teachers from the four educational settings were used to collect the teachers' stories that comprised the data on narrative use. NUD*IST software was employed to organise data and to focus on emerging concepts through data analysis. A wide spectrum of narrative uses related to meaning making was revealed. These varied understandings support using narrative to foster insight on three levels relating to several theoretical views of narrative and its importance.

Earning Deference: Reflections On The Merger Of Environmental And Land-Use Law, Michael Allan Wolf
Law Faculty Publications
The bedrock notion that courts should, in the overwhelming majority of cases, defer to lawmakers is currently under attack in the nation's courts, commentary and classrooms. Leading the way are several United States Supreme Court Justices who, in cases involving the Commerce Clause, the Takings Clause and Section Five of the Fourteenth Amendment, are much more willing than their immediate predecessors to second-guess the motives and tactics of elected and appointed officials at all levels of government. ...
Postmortem Interval (Pmi) Determination At Three Biogeoclimatic Zones In Southwest Colorado, Maria T. Allaire
Postmortem Interval (Pmi) Determination At Three Biogeoclimatic Zones In Southwest Colorado, Maria T. Allaire
LSU Master's Theses
Three pig (Sus scrofa L.) carcasses were exposed during the summer in three different biogeoclimatic zones ranging in elevations from 6,700 to 11,100 feet in order to determine the rates of carrion decomposition and arthropod succession patterns on carrion in southwest Colorado. The carcasses were exposed in three scenarios: sun-exposed, shaded, and sun-exposed/shaded. Of the total 63 taxa collected, thirty species overlapped between two biogeoclimatic zones. A strong elevational preference is indicated for the Sarcophagidae taxon. A previously undescribed Boettcheria species was collected at 11,100 feet. The rates of decomposition lengthened as elevation increased due to a prolongation of the …

Reproductive Biology Of Smooth Cordgrass (Spartina Alterniflora), Xiaobing Fang
Reproductive Biology Of Smooth Cordgrass (Spartina Alterniflora), Xiaobing Fang
LSU Master's Theses
Smooth cordgrass (S. alterniflora) is a perennial grass that dominates the salt marsh in tidal wetlands along the Atlantic and Gulf Coast of North America and has been used for preventing soil erosion and restoring wetlands. Accessions collected from south Louisiana were studied to investigate flowering phenology, pollen viability, crossability, and seed production. S. alterniflora exhibited protogynous flowering where stigmas exserted 2 to 5 days from the floret prior to anthesis. Pollen shed primarily between 8:00 and 10:00 AM. Pollens were viable with average germination of 69% and stigma was receptive after exsertion. Pollen germinated in 15 minutes and pollen …
Misconceptions Surrounding The Safety Of Home Birth And Hospital Birth, Misty D. Richard
Misconceptions Surrounding The Safety Of Home Birth And Hospital Birth, Misty D. Richard
LSU Master's Theses
Much debate surrounds the topic of women choosing to deliver their infants at home with the services of a midwife. The outcomes of women beginning labor at home, ultimately delivering at home, and the infants born at home were studied in order to determine the safety of home birth among expectant women choosing to be attended by a midwife licensed to practice by the state of Louisiana. Trends associated with those choosing home birth and the frequency of home birth were also analyzed. The study was conducted using retrospective records of clients accepted during the study years 1986-2000. During the …

An Integrated Approach To Stormwater Management In The Coastal Zone, Clotho Alexis Spinner
An Integrated Approach To Stormwater Management In The Coastal Zone, Clotho Alexis Spinner
LSU Master's Theses
Undeveloped lands are inherently capable of handling the precipitation rates and severe storm events of a given area. As our communities continue to grow and expand, the stormwater management capabilities of an area’s natural systems will be impacted. Without thoughtful intervention, existing natural systems will be overwhelmed to the point of dysfunction, an unfortunate circumstance that has been the case in some of this country’s more urbanized areas. The main objective of this thesis is to demonstrate the process of applying an integrated greenway stormwater management system as an alternative approach to managing the present and future stormwater needs of …
Culinary Confusion: Using Osteological And Stable Isotopic Evidence To Reconstruct Paleodiet For The Ocmulgee/Blackshear Cordmarked People Of South Central Georgia, Bryan D. Tucker
LSU Master's Theses
The Ocmulgee Big Bend and Lake Blackshear regions of Georgia have diverse uplands and lowlands, rich in different types of food. Archaeological investigations have shown Late Woodland-style ceramics and artifacts extending up to the Middle Mississippian Period in these regions. Archaeologists have proposed the people of this region did not adopt maize agriculture or a Mississippian subsistence or cultural pattern during the Early Mississippian Period. This study tests this hypothesis with osteological and isotopic data from burials recovered from the Cannon site (9Cp52) and osteological data from the Telfair Mound site (9Tf2). Isotopic data demonstrate clearly that these people were …

The World Wide Web As A Vehicle For Advertising Movies To College Students: An Exploratory Study, Xiaoge Hu
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this study is to explore the World Wide Web as a vehicle for advertising movies to college students. Through a survey of LSU students, this study finds that online promotions as vehicles for advertising movies have great potential. Movie promotion websites are rated the second most effective form of movie advertising after television. The study found that people surf movie promotion websites mainly for movie show times, movie plot and cast information to compare film choices, and movie ticket purchases. The huge amount of data available and the 24/7 access to the internet is an important advantage. …

Evidence Of Postmortem Cultural Modification Of The Femora And The Poole-Rose Ossuary As Part Of The Feast Of The Dead Ceremony, Lori Kay Schiess
LSU Master's Theses
This study analyzes cutmarks on the femora from the Poole-Rose ossuary as evidence of postmortem cultural modification related to the Feast of the Dead. The ossuary is located in southern Ontario, Canada, and dates to A.D. 1550 ±50. The Feast of the Dead is a burial custom associated with the Huron and other groups of the Great Lakes. The relative size of the population is compared to other indigenous North American skeletal populations. The MNI using the femur for the adults of the Poole-Rose ossuary is 248, based on the presence of the proximal half of the shaft. The subadult …
Reliability Of Wavelet Analysis Of Heart Rate Variability During Rest And Exercise, Deborah Jean Stone
Reliability Of Wavelet Analysis Of Heart Rate Variability During Rest And Exercise, Deborah Jean Stone
LSU Master's Theses
The reliability of wavelet analysis (DWT), of heart rate variability during rest and exercise was examined for this study. All twenty-three participants visited the lab on two separate occasions no less than four weeks apart. All twenty-three participants were subjected to the spontaneous breathing (SB1), and HG60 exercise condition. Of those twenty-three participants, nine performed the HG20 exercise condition as well. It was found that during the SB1 condition, the R-R intervals were fairly reliable between days. However, the reliability of all the HRV parameters (SDNN, spectral components and wavelet components) were quite poor. Interestingly, however, during HG20, the reliability …
Litter And Ground Dwelling Spiders Of Mixed Mesophytic Forest In Southeast Louisiana, Joyce Fassbender
Litter And Ground Dwelling Spiders Of Mixed Mesophytic Forest In Southeast Louisiana, Joyce Fassbender
LSU Master's Theses
During Pleistocene glaciation much of the southeastern United States was covered with mixed mesophytic hardwood forest. These forests are composed predominantly of magnolia, holly, and beech with a mixture of other tree species, such as oak and hickory, and a distinct understory. Remnants of mixed mesophytic hardwood forests occur in the southern United States and are important refugia for disjunct and habitat-restricted species. In Louisiana, the mixed mesophytic forest habitat is found mostly in West Feliciana Parish, particularly in the area around St. Francisville. I chose two sites to conduct a study of spider diversity in litter habitats of disturbed …
The Practical Application Of Art And Technology: Delivering Interactive Educational Content To Young Children, Elma Sue Mccallum
The Practical Application Of Art And Technology: Delivering Interactive Educational Content To Young Children, Elma Sue Mccallum
LSU Master's Theses
I like simple things. More precisely I like taking complex things and distilling them to their simplest elements, those things that define their nature. Art and technology are two very different subjects. Simple and complex. Intuitive and analytical. Combining art and technology to deliver educational material with simple navigation, a child-friendly environment and playful, imaginative sounds that enhance rather than complicate the learning process, is the objective of my project. An interactive, educational CD for young children is the product of this thesis. Art has always been used to communicate ideas, thoughts and emotions; it expedites the delivery of the …

The Changing Face Of Hiv/Aids: An Anthropological And Epidemiological Study Of The Baton Rouge Area, Erica Brooke Gibson
The Changing Face Of Hiv/Aids: An Anthropological And Epidemiological Study Of The Baton Rouge Area, Erica Brooke Gibson
LSU Master's Theses
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the resulting Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) became widespread in the early 1980’s. At the beginning of the epidemic, HIV/AIDS was affecting mainly gay men. As the disease began to spread, more diverse populations were affected. Now, two decades later, the face of HIV and AIDS has changed. In the year 2000, the Baton Rouge area (which includes the parishes of Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, West Baton Rouge, and West Feliciana) had the highest detected rate of HIV/AIDS cases in the state, and the 16th highest detected rate of …
Men, Women, And Children, Marie Dufour Goodwin
Men, Women, And Children, Marie Dufour Goodwin
LSU Master's Theses
All of my fiction has to do with relationships. I suspect this is true of most creative writers, but in my place this broad theme takes precedence over other creative aspects of writing, such as language. While I would not call my prose minimalist, I have tried to set down my short stories in a plain rather than an involved or noticeably poetic idiom. As for the three-tiered division into “Men,” “Women,” and “Children,” the stories themselves naturally fell into these three categories, depending on the main, point-of-view character. I found it enthralling to change the authorial voice to conform …
The Chemistry Of Change: A Production Thesis In Directing, Anthony Greenleaf Winkler
The Chemistry Of Change: A Production Thesis In Directing, Anthony Greenleaf Winkler
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis is an account of the production process involved in directing The Chemistry of Change by Marlane Meyer. Particular attention is paid to the Suzuki and Viewpoint methods of actor training used in rehearsal; periods of discussion with the playwright regarding the script; negotiations with designers; and an evaluation of the audience reception of the public performances. These aspects of producing a play for the theatre are recorded from the point of view of the director and described with the intention of revealing the learning process for all involved in the collaborative process.
The Influences Of Parenting Styles On Children's Classroom Motivation, Kathryn Elizabeth Cramer
The Influences Of Parenting Styles On Children's Classroom Motivation, Kathryn Elizabeth Cramer
LSU Master's Theses
This study was part of a larger, longitudinal project investigating the relationships between family stress processes and children's development. The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationship between authoritarian, permissive, and authoritative parenting styles and children's classroom motivation as measured by child interviews and teacher perceptions. The population of this study included 281 first and third grade students and their parents in a mid-sized Southern city. Parenting styles data for this study were collected via mailed questionnaires consisting of the Primary Caregivers Practices Report (Robinson et al., 1995) and questions used to obtain demographic information. Motivation data …
Control Of Food Intake And Body Weight Following Smoking Cessation In Premenopausal Women, Jamie Lynn Neal
Control Of Food Intake And Body Weight Following Smoking Cessation In Premenopausal Women, Jamie Lynn Neal
LSU Master's Theses
Women experience more weight gain than men postcessation and are more aware of nicotine’s weight suppressing effects than men. Postcessation weight gain in women can be largely accounted for by significant increases in high fat foods from pre- to postcessation. Overeating found in the luteal phase, further compounds the increased caloric intake found postcessation. Few studies have evaluated the long-term effects of smoking cessation on macronutrient content and weight gain; and most have relied on self-report data. This study used the Macronutrient Self-Selection Paradigm (MSSP) and Food Preference Questionnaire (FPQ) to assess food intake in 17 women in the luteal …
Water Discharge Models, Seasonal Effluent Mass Loading, And Best Management Practices For Crawfish Ponds, Landon David Parr
Water Discharge Models, Seasonal Effluent Mass Loading, And Best Management Practices For Crawfish Ponds, Landon David Parr
LSU Master's Theses
Nearly 35,000 ha are used to grow crawfish in southwest and south-central Louisiana, and many of these ponds discharge into impaired water bodies. In 2002, proposed guidelines were published by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) assigning effluent limitations and standards for some aquaculture production systems and exempting others (e.g. crawfish ponds). This research had three objectives relative to crawfish ponds: develop water discharge models; final drawdown effluent quality and seasonal mass loading of solids and nutrients; and identification of Best Management Practices (BMPs) that could reduce effluent discharge and improve effluent quality. Models for south-central and southwest Louisiana …
The Synthesis Of New Biotin Derivatives And Their Bioactivity, Latisha Chanette Johnson
The Synthesis Of New Biotin Derivatives And Their Bioactivity, Latisha Chanette Johnson
LSU Master's Theses
Biotin is an essential growth factor found in all living cells. It functions as a cofactor for a group of coenzymes that catalyze transcarboxylation, decarboxylation, and carboxylation reactions. Acetyl CoA carboxylase catalyzes the first committed and regulated step in fatty acid synthesis in which malonyl CoA is the product. The biotin-dependent enzyme is found in all animals, plants, and bacteria. We studied the kinetic and structural aspects of acetyl CoA carboxylase, and in 1999 we reported the bioactivity and total synthesis of a unique first generation biotin-derived inhibitor of acetyl CoA carboxylase, 1(BP1). Kinetic studies on the activity of E. …
The Effect Of Experimental Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus On The Adenosine Triphosphate Content And Cellular Permeability Of The Canine Gastric And Jejunal Mucosa, Laura Elizabeth Peycke
The Effect Of Experimental Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus On The Adenosine Triphosphate Content And Cellular Permeability Of The Canine Gastric And Jejunal Mucosa, Laura Elizabeth Peycke
LSU Master's Theses
This study was designed to characterize changes in the content of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and cellular permeability of gastric and jejunal mucosa during gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). Our hypothesis stated that experimental GDV would result in a decrease in ATP content and cellular integrity of the gastric and intestinal mucosa that may improve after decompression and derotation of the stomach. Fifteen medium-to-large mixed-breed male dogs were randomly divided into three groups: GDV dogs, Ischemia dogs and Control dogs. All dogs were maintained on gas anesthesia for 210 minutes. The GDV dogs had a GDV for 120 minutes with a 90-minute period …

Utilization Of Rice Bran By Pythium Irregulare For Lipid Production, Hui Zhu
LSU Master's Theses
This research investigated the feasibility of utilizing rice bran as feedstock for submerged fermentation of Pythium irregulare to produce fungal lipids, which contain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) including arachidonic acid (AA, C20:4n6) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5n3). The fungal nutrient requirements, temperature characterization and growth modeling were determined in glucose-yeast extract media. Sixteen media combinations based on a 24 factorial design with four levels of glucose and yeast extract ranged from 1% to 4% and 0.25% to 1%, respectively, and corresponding carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N) ranged from 4 to 64, were examined. The suitable C/N for Pythium irregulare growth ranged from …
Improving The Design Of Golf Course Communities As Wildlife Habitats, Jason R. Watton
Improving The Design Of Golf Course Communities As Wildlife Habitats, Jason R. Watton
LSU Master's Theses
Golf course community developments present a unique opportunity to preserve and create wildlife habitat. Golf course management and development industries have become particularly cognizant of their environmental responsibilities in recent times and are responsive to new research. The specific focus of this thesis research is to provide guidance and encouragement for landscape architects designing wildlife habitat areas within golf course community developments. Specifically, I analyze the size, shape, and orientation of a selected number of wildlife habitat areas within the unique context of golf course community land usage. My hypothesis is that the spatial characteristics of a habitat area influence …
