Characterization Of An Acyl-Coa Thioesterase That Functions As A Major Regulator Of Peroxisomal Lipid Metabolism, Mary Hunt, Karianne Solaas, Bengt F. Kase, Stefan E H Alexson Jan 2002

Characterization Of An Acyl-Coa Thioesterase That Functions As A Major Regulator Of Peroxisomal Lipid Metabolism, Mary Hunt, Karianne Solaas, Bengt F. Kase, Stefan E H Alexson

Articles

Peroxisomes function in b-oxidation of very long- and long-chain fatty acids, dicarboxylic fatty acids, bile acid intermediates, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, thromboxanes, pristanic acid and xenobiotic carboxylic acids. These lipids are mainly chain-shortened for excretion as the carboxylic acids or transported to mitochondria for further metabolism. Several of these carboxylic acids are slowly oxidized and may therefore sequester coenzyme A (CoASH). To prevent CoASH sequestration and to facilitate excretion of chain-shortened carboxylic acids, acyl-CoA thioesterases, which catalyze the hydrolysis of acyl-CoAs to the free acid and CoASH, may play important roles. We have here cloned and characterized a peroxisomal acyl-CoA thioesterase from …

Leftist Literature And The Ideology Of Eugenics During The American Depression, Sarah Catherine Holmes Jan 2002

Leftist Literature And The Ideology Of Eugenics During The American Depression, Sarah Catherine Holmes

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation examines both literary and non-literary works to illustrate how leftist writing was profoundly influenced by notions of eugenics which circulated widely in Depression-era America, though often just beneath the surface. One of the most popular movements during the Great Depression was the attempt to prove that certain groups of the American population were "unfit" and that society should take intentional steps to intervene in citizens' reproductive rights. This eugenics doctrine was so pervasive that it became embodied in a variety of texts, including many "leftist" texts, thereby producing an ideological crisis for many of these writers. Leftist literature …

The Effect Of An Integrated Curriculum On Fourth Graders' Achievement In And Attitude Toward Music Instruction, Shirley E. Lacroix

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an integrated curriculum on fourth graders' music achievement and attitudes toward general music instruction. Participants were two classes of fourth grade students (N = 41) randomly assigned to an experimental or control group. Taught by the same teacher, students in the experimental groups received integrated music and language arts instruction; students in the control groups received traditional music instruction. Prior to treatment, music background was assessed using the Music Background Questionnaire (Yoder-White, 1994) and Metropolitan Achievement Tests (1993) scores were gathered. In addition, data were collected across subjects' pretreatment …

Copper Toxicity In The Physiology And Early Development Of Fucus Serratus, Hanne Dalsgaard Nielsen Jan 2002

Copper Toxicity In The Physiology And Early Development Of Fucus Serratus, Hanne Dalsgaard Nielsen

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Fucus serratus was used in a series of laboratory experiments to study the effects of Cu2+ exposure on the early development of zygotes and physiological effects on adults collected from Cu2+ polluted and clean habitats. Comparative studies showed that Cu2+ tolerance in Fucus is an inherited character. Zygote development and growth of embryos and adults during Cu2+ exposure indicated that Fucus serratus from a Cu2+ polluted habitat had a higher tolerance limit than material from two clean habitats. Furthermore, there was no difference in the tolerance level of zygotes, embryos and adults from the same habitat. Chlorophyll fluorescence measurements showed …

Abiotic Stress Signalling In The Fucus Embryo, Susana Coelho Jan 2002

Abiotic Stress Signalling In The Fucus Embryo, Susana Coelho

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Fucoid algae live in the intertidal region where they experience daily fluctuations in light and external osmotic environment. High light, especially in combination with ultraviolet (UV) radiation and hyper-osmotic stress affected the cellular physiology of Fucus embryos. Two photoinhibition responses were recognised. Firstly, a rapid decline of the photosystem II (PSII) efficiency, linked with the operation of the xanthophyl cycle, followed by a slower decline correlated with reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. As a result of enhanced ROS production, a slower repair of the PSII efficiency was observed, particularly with increased UV-B doses. Development of the embryos was transiently affected …

Evaluation Of Radionuclide Induced Damage In Marine Invertebrates, Josephine Anne Hagger Jan 2002

Evaluation Of Radionuclide Induced Damage In Marine Invertebrates, Josephine Anne Hagger

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Limited studies have been carried out to assess the potential effects of ionising radiation on marine organisms. Therefore the general aims of this thesis were, (a) to assess the cytotoxic, genotoxic and developmental effects of ionising radiation on the embryo-larvae of two ecologically relevant marine invertebrates Mytilus edulis and Platynereis dumerilii, (2) to assess the effects of an environmentally relevant cocktail of radionuclides (3) to monitor the potential impact of radiation in the natural environment and finally (4) attempt to predict the potential effects of radiation at a population level. Following validation of developmental stages and mammalian based cytotoxic and …

Suitability Of Selected Raw Materials And By-Products In Formulated Feeds For Nile Tilapia Oreochromis Niloticus And African Catfish Clarias Gariepinus, Abdel-Wahab A. Abdel-Warith Jan 2002

Suitability Of Selected Raw Materials And By-Products In Formulated Feeds For Nile Tilapia Oreochromis Niloticus And African Catfish Clarias Gariepinus, Abdel-Wahab A. Abdel-Warith

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The current status of global aquaculture production was reviewed with a special emphasis on Africa and in particular Egypt. The main species of interest in this study were tilapia Oreochromis niloticus and African catfish Clarias gariepinus which are gaining popularity and are of considerable importance in the market of farmed fish in this continent and of economic relevance to Egypt and other Middle Eastern countries. Research was principally directed to establishing the suitability of specific feed ingredients and materials that could be included in balanced diets for both species. Various animal and plant by-products were selected to evaluate their nutritional …

Chromosomal Variation In Nucella Lapillus (L.) And Other Muricid Gastropods, Philip Lionel Pascoe Jan 2002

Chromosomal Variation In Nucella Lapillus (L.) And Other Muricid Gastropods, Philip Lionel Pascoe

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The Robertsonian polymorphism (numerical change in the chromosome complement by centric fusion or fission) in the dog-whelk (Nucella lapillus, Mollusca: Gastropoda) has been known and studied sporadically for almost 50 years. However, the possible causes, consequences and proposed correlations of this phenomenon remain enigmatic. Nucella lapillus (2n = 26 to 36), has undergone a marked reduction in chromosome number from its ancestral form; most other muricid species have a diploid chromosome number in the range 2n = 60- 70. Correlations have been proposed between chromosome number (or karyotype) and habitat (wave exposure), and also directly or indirectly with allozymes, shell …

Half A Loaf Is Predominant And Superior To None: Class Certification Of Particular Issues Under Rule 23(C)(4)(A), Jon Romberg

Utah Law Review

Mass-produced objects and ideas permeate our lives, as more and more becomes reproducible on a grander scale with decreasing marginal cost.' The world is suffused with a common stream of products and practices that issue from a single corporate or governmental source. Downstream, the wave washes over large groups of people, with a pattern of similar but not identical consequences left in its wake.

Stem Cell Research: Is The Law Preventing Progress?, Jennifer L. Enmon Jan 2002

Stem Cell Research: Is The Law Preventing Progress?, Jennifer L. Enmon

Utah Law Review

On August 9, 2001, President George W. Bush announced a change in federal policy allowing federal money to fund embryonic stem ("ES") cell research on selected ES cell lines. Medical advancements in this new millennium, including new treatments for diseased and damaged cells, may hinge on the promises of stem cell research. Scientists believe that stem cells will provide treatments for diseases, such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, which have no effective treatment to date.' Moreover, stem cells may provide a cure for debilitating spinal cord injuries that leave victims paralyzed. However, because some stem cells are derived from embryonic and …

The Pitfalls Of The Environmental Right-To-Know, Alexander Volokh Jan 2002

The Pitfalls Of The Environmental Right-To-Know, Alexander Volokh

Utah Law Review

Would you want your family to live near a plant containing acetone, acetaldehyde, methylbutyrate, ethylcaproate, hexylacetate, methanol, acrolein, and croton aldehyde? Perhaps not. Responding to Americans' fears of exposure to scary-sounding and possibly dangerous chemicals, and prompted by a few high-profile industrial accidents, Congress in 1986 adopted a far-reaching system of chemical-release reporting dubbed the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI).' Some states have adopted environmental information programs of their own.

Middle School Art And The Internet, John F. Bueltel Jan 2002

Middle School Art And The Internet, John F. Bueltel

Graduate Research Papers

This graduate project focuses on the efforts of one middle school art teacher to integrate the Internet into the middle school art curriculum at one middle school in Iowa. Classrooms with Internet access increased to 63 percent in 2000 (National Center for Education Statistics, 2000) with similar numbers of school age children ( 65 percent) having Internet access in their homes (U.S. Census Bureau, 2001). Art teachers have been reluctant to embrace this technology (Matthews, 1997) even though many art education resources exist on the Internet. The Internet can provide a vast resource of artwork from web sites published by …

A Social Studies/Science Technology Project Manual For Upper Elementary Educators In The Dubuque Community School District, Jenny M. Kress

Graduate Research Papers

In the last five years, the Dubuque Community School District's technology infrastructure has grown tenfold. With the implementation of a district-wide networked computer system also came growing expectations for classroom teachers to provide technological opportunities for students (Dubuque Community School District, 2001). With the administration's eagerness to bring Dubuque's students into the information world, teachers have not been provided with any technology curriculum or manuals on how to incorporate computer projects into their lessons. This graduate research project was developed to give the classroom teacher a means to provide these technological opportunities in a very systematic and step-by-step manner. The …

Integrating The Literature And Social Studies Curriculum, Christa S. Lynch Jan 2002

Integrating The Literature And Social Studies Curriculum, Christa S. Lynch

Graduate Research Papers

This paper reviews the historical development of curriculum integration, examining the relationship between literature and social studies and offers an original instructional unit based on this research. The literature will illustrate how, throughout American history, Progressives argued for integration of subjects but under some opposition from their contemporaries. An examination of recent literature will then demonstrate how and why curriculum integration is currently used.
