Habitat Use Of Urban Bats In Springfield, Missouri, Sarah Jane Robertson Jan 2002

Habitat Use Of Urban Bats In Springfield, Missouri, Sarah Jane Robertson

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

During the summers of 1998-2000, the Anabat II bat detector system was placed in a mosaic of habitats within Springfield, Missouri and surrounding rural areas in southern Missouri to compare the activity indices of nine bat species between urban and rural environments. A total of 1,876 echolocation call sequences was recorded, identified to species and analyzed; 1,066 were from 42 Springfield sites, and 810 were from 22 rural locations. For all species combined, urban bat activity tended to be higher than rural activity, but those differences were only significant at the reading taken 3 hours after sunset. Eptesicus fuscus activity …

Quantification Of Land-Use Impact On Stream Water Quality, Scott Dennis, Indrajeet Chaubey, Brian Haggard Jan 2002

Quantification Of Land-Use Impact On Stream Water Quality, Scott Dennis, Indrajeet Chaubey, Brian Haggard

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Accelerated eutrophication of Beaver Lake in northwest Arkansas is a major environmental concern. When developing watershed-management plans to protect lake water quality, it is important that linkages among land-use activities and water quality of tributary streams be quantified. This study assessed longitudinal base-flow and storm-flow water quality at War Eagle Creek and quantified linkages between stream water quality and land-use conditions within the War Eagle Creek sub-watershed of the Beaver Lake watershed. We collected six water samples: three from base-flow conditions and three from storm-flow conditions during Spring 2002. In general, concentrations of nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N), total N (TN), total …

Writing Toward Democracy: Service-Learning And Composition, Glenn C. Hutchinson Jr. Jan 2002

Writing Toward Democracy: Service-Learning And Composition, Glenn C. Hutchinson Jr.

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

This study will show how encouraging students to write toward democracy could help them to become better writers and citizens. Service-learning can help students learn to write through active inquiry, collaboration with different discourse communities, and consideration of their roles as citizens. However, service-learning must meet three challenges in order to be successful.

First, I will argue that freshman composition's subordinate status as a service course to the university can inhibit a pedagogy of service-learning. Even though service-learning may be a useful term to name this pedagogy, I propose that we find a different name in order to emphasize student …

Antigenic Community Between Schistosoma Mansoni And Biomphalaria Glabrata: On The Search Of Candidate Antigens For Vaccines, Nathalie Chacon, S. Losada, B. Noya, B. Alarcon De Noya, O. Noya Jan 2002

Antigenic Community Between Schistosoma Mansoni And Biomphalaria Glabrata: On The Search Of Candidate Antigens For Vaccines, Nathalie Chacon, S. Losada, B. Noya, B. Alarcon De Noya, O. Noya

Physician Assistant Studies Faculty Publications

We have previously confirmed the presence of common antigens between Schistosoma mansoni and its vector, Biomphalaria glabrata. Cross-reactive antigens may be important as possible candidates for vaccine and diagnosis of schistosomiasis. Sera from outbred mice immunized with a soluble Biomphalaria glabrata antigen (SBgA) of non-infected B. glabrata snails recognized molecules of SBgA itself and S. mansoni AWA by Western blot. Recognition of several molecules of the SBgA were inhibited by pre-incubation with AWA (16, 30, 36, 60 and 155 kDa). The only specific molecule of AWA, inhibited by SBgA, was a 120 kDa protein. In order to determine which epitopes …

Environmental Law Of Armed Conflict, Nada Al-Duaij

Dissertations & Theses

This thesis explains the law of the environment during armed conflicts in five parts. Part One, “General Background of Armed Conflict,” focuses on the nature of armed conflict, including international and national disputes, civil war, and the problem of applying international legal duties to internal belligerents, the impact of armed conflict on civilians, and the environmental impact of preparing for, engaging in, and recovering from armed conflict. Part Two, “Environmental Protection in International Humanitarian Law,” examines the definition of international humanitarian law (IHL), focusing particularly on the environmental protection provisions in the IHL and its current inadequacy as a tool …

'Rogue States' Within American Borders: Remedying State Noncompliance With The International Covenant On Civil And Political Rights, Margaret S. Thomas

Journal Articles

Nearly a decade after the United States ratified the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the treaty's implementation is incomplete. A complex maze of reservations, understandings, and declarations has hindered domestic implementation, as has Congress 's failure to pass national implementing legislation. Almost every state in the Union has laws that violate the Covenant. For example, the treaty requires that in criminal matters, juveniles must be tried in a manner that takes account of their age. Nevertheless, California and many other states frequently treat minors as adults in such matters. Because the Senate declared the treaty to be non-self-executing, …

Feminist Legal Writing, Kathryn M. Stanchi Jan 2002

Feminist Legal Writing, Kathryn M. Stanchi

Scholarly Works

To lay the groundwork for the exploration of feminist legal writing, this Article first summarizes the traditions and conventions of persuasion and persuasive writing-how they are characterized in law and how they are taught in law school. It then summarizes a type of language in linguistic theory called "antilanguage," which is language created by groups in society that are outcasts or otherwise excluded from the dominant social class to rebel against the dominant class. Analyzing several pieces of feminist legal scholarship that use unconventional writing techniques, this Article identifies a type of feminist legal antilanguage. This feminist legal antilanguage uses …

The Blues In Three Parts: A Collection Of Poetry, Short Stories, And A Screenplay, Desha Tolar Kelly

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis is entitled, “The Blues in Three Parts: A Collection of Poetry, Short Stories, and a Screenplay.” The first part, a collection of poetry, contains themes of childhood and adolescence, love and loss, life struggles, writing, and death. The second part, a collection of short stories, contains five stories centered on similar themes. The third and final part, a screenplay entitled “Cow”, contains elements of the first two parts as well. The epigraph, which contemplates the idea that the blues is not only music, but all the ups and downs of life, sets the stage for the central thread, …

Hourly Variations In Planktonic Larval Concentrations On The Inner Shelf: Emerging Patterns And Processes, Elizabeth D. Garland, Cheryl Ann Zimmer Jan 2002

Hourly Variations In Planktonic Larval Concentrations On The Inner Shelf: Emerging Patterns And Processes, Elizabeth D. Garland, Cheryl Ann Zimmer

Journal of Marine Research

Planktonic larvae are unlikely to be randomly distributed over time or in space. Fluctuations in larval density may result from a variety of physical and biological processes. To identify relatively high-frequency patterns of larval variation for an inner-shelf environment, zooplankton were sampled hourly for 3 d using an automated plankton pump. Moored ~80 cm above bottom, the pump was located in 8 m of water on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Densities of all larval groups were highly variable: 5-746 m-3 for barnacle cyprids, 0-668 m-3 for polychaetes, 0-516 m-3 for bivalves, 6-414 m-3 for …

Intermingling Of Two Pseudocalanus Species On Georges Bank, D. J. Mcgillicuddy Jr., A. Bucklin Jan 2002

Intermingling Of Two Pseudocalanus Species On Georges Bank, D. J. Mcgillicuddy Jr., A. Bucklin

Journal of Marine Research

Physical and biological controls on the springtime distributions of Pseudocalanus moultoni and P. newmani on Georges Bank are examined by assimilating observations into a coupled physical-biological model. Monthly snapshots of abundance are derived from U.S. GLOBEC Georges Bank broad-scale surveys during 1997. The forward problem is posed as an advection-diffusion-reaction equation for the copepod concentration. The adjoint method of data assimilation is used to invert for the biological sources and sinks implied by the observed changes in abundance between surveys and the flow during the intervening period. Based on this analysis, the two species appear to have distinct population centers …
