Not Everyone Who Speaks Spanish Is From Spain: Taino Survival In The 21st Century Dominican Republic, Pedro Ferbel-Azcarate Jan 2002

Not Everyone Who Speaks Spanish Is From Spain: Taino Survival In The 21st Century Dominican Republic, Pedro Ferbel-Azcarate

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The national identity of the Dominican Republic is based on an idealized story of three cultural roots-- Spanish, African, and Taíno--with a selective amnesia of the tragedies and struggles inherent to the processes of colonial domination and resistance. Further, African, Taíno and mixed AfroMestizo culture have been marginalized in favor of nationalist ideologies of progress and civilization found in the embrace of Hispanidad and Catholicism. In such a way, Dominicans have been disconnected from their African, their indigenous, and their mixed Afro-Mestizo Criollo (Creole) ancestry and cultural heritage, even though it is these ancestries and heritages which mark Dominicans with …

Biotechnological Production Of A Stereoselective Scfv Antibody Fragment, Lour-Evelyn Lezondra Jan 2002

Biotechnological Production Of A Stereoselective Scfv Antibody Fragment, Lour-Evelyn Lezondra

Honors Capstones

Antibodies are proteins of the immune system that exhibit exquisite specificity to their binding partners, called antigens. Binding occurs at the hypervariable region (Fv), which is capable of discriminating even enantiomeric molecules. By targeting on the DNA sequences that code for Fv and expressing it as a protein, the binding properties of an antibody can be assessed. In this project, the heavy and light chains of the Fv region (Vh and V[_) of an anti-amino acid antibody (anti-phenylalanine 67.36) were linked using a short nucleotide linker and four primers designed from previously determined sequences of Vh and V|_. The resulting …

In our report, we shall only focus on one of the most active frontiers of today's biotechnology-human genomics.

Gender, Crime, And Desistance: Toward A Theory Of Cognitive Transformation, Peggy C. Giordano, Stephen A. Cernkovich, Jennifer L. Rudolph Jan 2002

Gender, Crime, And Desistance: Toward A Theory Of Cognitive Transformation, Peggy C. Giordano, Stephen A. Cernkovich, Jennifer L. Rudolph

Sociology Faculty Publications

his article analyzes data derived from the first detailed long-term follow-up of a sample of serious adolescent female delinquents and similarly situated males. Neither marital attachment nor job stability, factors frequently associated with male desistance from crime, were strongly related to female or male desistance. A symbolic-interactionist perspective on desistance is developed as a counterpoint to Sampson and Laub's theory of informal social control, and life history narratives are used to illustrate the perspective. This cognitive theory is generally compatible with a control approach but (a) adds specificity regarding underlying change mechanisms, (b) explains some negative cases, and (c) fits …

Investigation Of The Relationship Between Middle School Science Teachers' Knowledge And Beliefs Regarding The Coherence And Connections Among Science Concepts And Their Classroom Practices, Francis Eberle Jan 2002

Investigation Of The Relationship Between Middle School Science Teachers' Knowledge And Beliefs Regarding The Coherence And Connections Among Science Concepts And Their Classroom Practices, Francis Eberle

Educational Studies Dissertations

This phenomenological investigation used an inductive qualitative research approach with multiple instruments and processes including a survey, interviews, classroom observations, concept maps, and classroom materials for data. The results suggest that middle school science teachers' ability to teach science in a connected and coherent fashion may be tied to their mental schema for organizing science ideas, curriculum materials, and their reflections on what they are teaching and why.

Globalization And International Trade Of Water (Chapter 2), Peter H. Gleick, Gary Wolff, Elizabeth L. Chalecki, Rachel Reyes Jan 2002

Globalization And International Trade Of Water (Chapter 2), Peter H. Gleick, Gary Wolff, Elizabeth L. Chalecki, Rachel Reyes

Political Science Faculty Publications

This chapter explores the implications of treating water as an economic good within global markets. While economic valuation can promote efficiency, it raises concerns over equity, ecological protection, and cultural values. The authors define key concepts—globalization, privatization, and commodification—and examine tensions between market allocation and the universal right to water.

Examples range from bottled water sales to proposals for bulk transfers, analyzed within international trade frameworks like GATT and NAFTA. The chapter emphasizes that sustainable water management requires integrating social and economic goals, ensuring equitable access, protecting ecosystems, and establishing clear national and international rules to prevent overexploitation and inequitable …

UNOAI Report 02-5

As the Advanced General Aviation Transport Experiments (AGATE) program completes its eight-year plan, the outcomes and industry effects reveal its successes and problems. AGATE engaged several different types of institutions, including federal agencies, business and industry, universities, and non-profit organizations. By examining the perceptions of those intimately involved as well as periphery members, this study shows the powerful consequences of this type of combination both now and in the future. The problems are a particularly useful illustration of the inter-working of a jointly funded research and development initiative. By learning how these problems are addressed, the study …

Effect Of Problem-Based Learning On Motivation In An Urban Science Classroom, Amy L. Pawlak Jan 2002

Effect Of Problem-Based Learning On Motivation In An Urban Science Classroom, Amy L. Pawlak

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

This study was conducted in effort to increase class participation and excitement about science in an urban science classroom. It focused on a class of ninth-grade students enrolled in a secondary general science class. The subjects were given a problem-based learning (PBL) project that required them to research an endangered species found in North America. Observations regarding engagement and behavior were recorded daily in a journal. The results show that excitement and participation increased for most, but not all students. However, no decrease in engagement was seen. Classroom behavior also improved during the course of the study. The PBL method …

Review: 'Immovable Laws, Irresistible Rights: Natural Law, Moral Rights, And Feminist Ethics', Rebecca Whisnant Jan 2002

Review: 'Immovable Laws, Irresistible Rights: Natural Law, Moral Rights, And Feminist Ethics', Rebecca Whisnant

Philosophy Faculty Publications

This collection of Pierce's essays traces the evolution of her thinking about natural law theory--and, more broadly, about talk of "natures" as normatively significant--over a period of 30 years. We see her move from a wholesale rejection of such talk, in her influential 1971 piece "Natural Law Language and Women," to a qualified admission that it can have its liberatory uses. Yet she maintains throughout that, progressive potential or no, natural law is far inferior to Kantian notions of rights and autonomy as a foundation for ethical thought.

The distribution and function of aquaporins (AQPs) have not previously been defined in sweat glands. In this study, AQP1, AQP3, and AQP5 mRNA were demonstrated in rat paw by reverse transcription (RT)–PCR, but AQP2 and AQP4 were not. AQP1, AQP3, and AQP5 protein were confirmed in these tissues by immunoblotting. AQP1 was identified in capillary endothelial cells by immunohistochemical labeling, but not in sweat glands or epidermis. Abundant AQP3 expression was seen in basal levels of epidermis, but not in sweat glands. AQP2 and AQP4 were not observed in either skin or sweat glands. Immunohistochemical labeling revealed abundant AQP5 in …

The Effects Of Acculturation Level On Verbal Learning In A Sample Of Hispanics Of Mexican-American Extraction, Anita S. Blair Jan 2002

The Effects Of Acculturation Level On Verbal Learning In A Sample Of Hispanics Of Mexican-American Extraction, Anita S. Blair

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This study is interested in the relationship of acculturation to performance on verbal learning tasks. The hypotheses of the study are that as acculturation to Anglo American culture approaches assimilation, total recall scores on the California Verbal Learning Test-II (CVLT-II) will increase and performance on a nonsense word task will not significantly correlate with acculturation level. A review of the literature on acculturation and test bias in Hispanic populations is followed by research on bilingual performance on memory tasks. As the independent variable, acculturation is examined on three levels: Mexican Oriented, Bicultural Oriented and Anglo Oriented using Scale One of …
