Furman Magazine
"At age 46, I finally realized that money and prestige meant nothing if I didn't have mental health and any joy in my work. I now make a third of my previous salary, but I sleep all night and laugh all day. I followed my 'gut feeling' and now work at a nature reserve. It's wonderful! Follow your sense of what is right for you."

Use Of High Pressure Liquid Chromatography To Detect And Quantify Oxytetracycline Marks In Walleye Otoliths And Dorsal Spines, Michael J. Hawkins
Use Of High Pressure Liquid Chromatography To Detect And Quantify Oxytetracycline Marks In Walleye Otoliths And Dorsal Spines, Michael J. Hawkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Oxytetracycline (OTC) is used to chemically mark calcified structures in walleye Stizostedion vitreum fry and fingerlings. Current visual methods for detection of these marks are subjective, and biologists are unable to quantify the amount of OTC in a sample. The goal of this study was to determine if high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a feasible and superior alternative for detecting and quantifying OTC in otoliths of fry-marked and spines of fingerlingmarked walleyes. Study objectives were to validate methodology of extraction of OTC from calcified tissue, detect and quantify extracted OTC using HPLC, and determine a cost comparison of current …
A Spurious Solution To A Genuine Problem: An In-Depth Look At The 1848 Import Drugs Act, Angela Walch
A Spurious Solution To A Genuine Problem: An In-Depth Look At The 1848 Import Drugs Act, Angela Walch
Faculty Articles
The Import Drugs Act has been relatively ignored by the academic community, and is most often relegated to a passing reference in a footnote. Yet the Act represents an important step in our nation's creation of a safe supply of drugs, and thus deserves some attention. In this paper, I give the Act that attention, and seek to place it in an historical context. In Chapter 1, I describe how Congressional action was prompted by medical conditions during the Mexican War and the belief that American soldiers were being given adulterated drugs. Chapter 2 describes the involvement of the professional …
Storm Clouds On The Horizon Of Darwinism: Teaching The Anthropic Principle And Intelligent Design In The Public Schools, Jeffrey F. Addicott
Storm Clouds On The Horizon Of Darwinism: Teaching The Anthropic Principle And Intelligent Design In The Public Schools, Jeffrey F. Addicott
Faculty Articles
Professor Addicott’s article addresses the future legal ramifications that the fledgling intelligent design movement and the scientific concept known as the Anthropic Principle will have on the teaching of Darwinian evolution in public schools. Both ideas are associated with the concept that an “unnamed” intelligent designer is responsible for the creation and sustainment of life. Predicting that the Supreme Court will ultimately allow, for instance, school boards to incorporate intelligent design in the science curriculum, he believes neither of the two ideas violate the Establishment Clause and cannot be “dismissed as yet another back door attempt by creationists to get …

Does Malnutrition During The Lactation Period Affect The Growth Of Bones And Teeth? -A Morphometric Study In Rats, Taner Zi̇ylan, Khalil Awadh Murshed, Aynur Emi̇ne Çi̇çekci̇başi
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
To evaluate the effect of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) on the growth of the mandible and incisor teeth as well as to know if the malnutrition produces modifications in the time of the eruption of the teeth in malnourished rats during the lactation period, animals were divided into experimental and control groups. Experimental pups fed by one mother's milk were doubled in their number to be twice to those of the control pups fed by one mother's milk (Park method). The animals were sacrificed at 20 and 40 days of age, and the body and total lengths of the mandible, and …

Effect Of Low Dietary Zinc Intake And Experimental Diabetes On The Zinc And Carbohydrate Metabolism In Rats, Zine Kechrid, Nazan Demi̇r, Cherif Abdennour, Noureddine Bouzerna
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
To investigate the effect of low dietary zinc intake and experimental diabetes (IDDM) on the zinc and carbohydrate metabolism, 8-week-old male wealing normal albino (Wistar) rats were fed diets containing either adequate (54mg/kg) or low zinc (1mg/kg) quantities for one week. Ten rats from each group (n=20) were then intraperitoneally injected with alloxan to induce diabetes. The rats were sacrificed after a further three weeks. Body weight gain and food intake were recorded regularly. On day 28, after an overnight fast, the animals were sacrificed and blood glucose, serum insulin, serum cholesterol concentrations, liver glycogen contents, and femur and pancreatic …

Vascular Plant And Epiphytic Lichen Communities In Canadian Aspen Parkland: Determinants Of Small-Scale Species Richness, H.L. Buckley
Vascular Plant And Epiphytic Lichen Communities In Canadian Aspen Parkland: Determinants Of Small-Scale Species Richness, H.L. Buckley
Aspen Bibliography
Within-community species-area relationships were examined for vascular plants and epiphytic lichens on Populus spp within 100 treed patches in an area of less than 4 km2 in the aspen parkland of south-central Alberta, Canada. Both plants and lichens were sampled on three scales (patch-scale and two within-patch scales). This study is one of the few to demonstrate scale-dependent species-area relationships at a small scale and highlights the importance of multi-scale sampling in ecology. At the larger patch scale, the relationship between plant species richness and area was positive for both the full plant dataset and the forest habitat specialist …

Dying Twice: Conditions On New York's Death Row, Michael B. Mushlin
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
In 1995 New York State revived the death penalty as a punishment for certain categories of murder, and established a “death row” for condemned men at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York (variously, “Clinton” or the “Prison”). Four years later, in October 1999, two committees of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York (the “Association”) joined together to study the conditions of confinement on this death row--or, as it is officially called, the Unit for Condemned Persons (the “UCP”). These committees--the Committee on Corrections and the Committee on Capital Punishment--formed a joint subcommittee (the …

Evaluating The Point Of Separation, During Carcass Fabrication, Between The Beef Wholesale Rib And The Beef Wholesale Chuck, B.J. Reuter, D.M. Wulf, B.C. Shanks, R.J. Maddock
Animal Science Faculty Publications
This study determined whether there is a logical point of value change, related to either tenderness or consumer acceptance, at which to separate the beef carcass within the rib/chuck region. Rib/chuck rolls (RCR); (n = 30) consisting of the ribeye roll and chuck eye roll subprimals (2nd through 12th rib locations) were cut into 22 steaks each (two steaks per rib location), and Warner-Bratzler shear force and consumer purchase preference were evaluated for steaks at each rib location. Steaks from different locations of the RCR were composed of differing proportions of several muscles: longissimus muscle (LM), spinalis dorsi and multifidus …
