The Spanish Attempt To Tribalize The Darién, 1735-50, Ignacio Gallup-Diaz
The Spanish Attempt To Tribalize The Darién, 1735-50, Ignacio Gallup-Diaz
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
Spanish officials in eastern Panama believed that Christianized Indians would serve as surrogates for Spanish settlers or troops, and their attempts to administer the region were grounded upon establishing alliances with selected Indian leaders. At the same time, pirates and other intruders also saw the need for alliances with Indian men in order for their endeavors to succeed. Through a process in which Europeans and Indians played an equal part, the early modern period saw the creation of several new indigenous leaders. The chieftains who interacted with outsiders were forced to create new ways of ruling on the ground as …

Rape By Drugs: A Statutory Overview And Proposals For Reform, Patricia J. Falk
Rape By Drugs: A Statutory Overview And Proposals For Reform, Patricia J. Falk
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
The methods by which human beings accomplish nonconsensual sexual activity with fellow humans are almost limitless. They use physical force; they beat, choke, and knock their victims unconscious. They kidnap and restrain them. They use weapons and threats of immediate force to subdue their quarry. They come in groups with the superior strength of their number. They exploit the element of surprise. They coerce, extort, and blackmail others into sexual submission. They lie, pretend, impersonate, and defraud, trapping the unwary in webs of deceit. They victimize mentally ill, mentally disabled, physically weak, and physically incapacitated persons. They abuse their positions …
Development Of A Yeast Biosensor Strain For The Identification Of Genotoxic Compounds, Robin M. Reed
Development Of A Yeast Biosensor Strain For The Identification Of Genotoxic Compounds, Robin M. Reed
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Advances in combinatorial chemistry have provided the pharmaceutical industry with innumerable lead compounds that could potentially serve as therapeutic agents. One of the challenges in the further development of such compounds is to rapidly, yet inexpensively, distinguish those that have undesirable effects such as genotoxicity. Thus, a simple biological assay that would permit the identification of potential DNA mutagens, and be adaptable to high-throughput technologies would be cost effective in screening such lead compounds. The current methods use the Ames and SOS tests involving prokaryotic organisms, while systems that utilize mammalian cell culture and/or animal testing are time-consuming and expensive. …
A World Of Their Own: Woman And Folklore In Inter-War Britain, Natalie Holub
A World Of Their Own: Woman And Folklore In Inter-War Britain, Natalie Holub
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
The period between the First and Second World Wars was an unsettling time for women in Great Britain. After the First World War, the media, governmental acts, and everyday society urged women to return to the home. This was an especially difficult concept for women to accept after they had played a very public role during the war actively contributing to the war effort. My thesis explores three novels of interwar England that feature female characters seeking purpose in places outside of the traditional role of housewife. Ashe of Rings by Mary Butts, Harriet Hume by Rebecca West, and Lolly …

The review of relevant literature shows that this option provides positive experiences in a primary level classroom. Adaptable center plans are included as well as management and assessment suggestions.
Bridging The Gap: A Summer Bridge Curriculum Designed For Students Looping From First To Second Grade, Kristen M. May
Bridging The Gap: A Summer Bridge Curriculum Designed For Students Looping From First To Second Grade, Kristen M. May
All Graduate Projects
A literature review was conducted about academic learning loss during summer break. The literature search indicated that reading and math skills were most affected, and test scores in these areas decreased after a long summer break. Literature about the benefits of a looping program was also reviewed. The literature showed that this kind of program allowed for strong student-teacher relationships to be developed, increased the teacher's knowledge about their students' strengths and weaknesses, and decreased the amount of time reviewing skills at the beginning of the school year. The purpose of this project was to develop a summer curriculum for …

Tempest In A Teacup Or The Mystique Of Sexual Legal Discourse, Dana Neacsu
Tempest In A Teacup Or The Mystique Of Sexual Legal Discourse, Dana Neacsu
Law Faculty Publications
This article is about sex; but not about sex meaning gender, an adjective, or “that thing we are.” It is about sexual behavior. It is, in Professor Franke's words, about sex as verb--“that thing we do”--or, to quote Judge Posner, it is about that “quintessential private activity [of] our culture.” However, it does not focus on sex as “the ultimate animal necessity.” That would be the realm of today's talk shows headed by Jerry Springer and his ilk. Instead, it focuses on the pervasiveness of sexual discourse in the legal realm and tries to explain the reason behind it. This …
The Integration Of Music Education Strategies Into The Regular First Grade Elementary Classroom, Gloria Jane Frueh
The Integration Of Music Education Strategies Into The Regular First Grade Elementary Classroom, Gloria Jane Frueh
All Graduate Projects
A handbook of activities for teaching music in an elementary first grade classroom was developed for use by first grade regular classroom teachers. A review of current educational research implicates music as being a valued discipline in early educational development of children. A number of public schools do not have a music specialist. If music education is to be part of the school's curriculum, it will have to be taught by the regular classroom teacher. Using the National Standards for Music Education and this handbook as a guide, teachers can address the nine music education fundamentals. Integration and assessment strategies …

Images Of Service: Reflections From The Campus Compact Midwest Collaboration Community Service Directors Fellowship Program 2000-2001, Beth Blissman, Jay Cooper
Higher Education
We Americans are people of the journey. From boats across the Atlantic by way of Pilgrim quest, to the holocaust of the middle passage, to classic travelogues such as On the Road or Travels with Charley (in Search of America}, the stamp of the mythic journey seems to be indelibly planted on our national psyche. And as we all know, journeys have several staple elements: anticipation, consumption of a variety of foods at exorbitant prices, wrestling with a roadmap, and children in the back crying, "Are we there yet?" A quintessentially American component to the journey, however, is the postcard.

Earning Deference: Reflections On The Merger Of Environmental And Land-Use Law, Michael Allan Wolf
Earning Deference: Reflections On The Merger Of Environmental And Land-Use Law, Michael Allan Wolf
UF Law Faculty Publications
The bedrock notion that courts should, in the overwhelming majority of cases, defer to lawmakers is currently under attack in the nation's courts, commentary and classrooms. Leading the way are several United States Supreme Court Justices who, in cases involving the Commerce Clause, the Takings Clause and Section Five of the Fourteenth Amendment, are much more willing than their immediate predecessors to second-guess the motives and tactics of elected and appointed officials at all levels of government. Given this new juris-political reality, it is more important than ever that local government officials--who are often (though, certainly, not always justifiably) viewed …

Recent Developments In Federal Income Taxation: The Year 2001, Ira B. Shepard, Martin J. Mcmahon Jr.
UF Law Faculty Publications
This recent developments outline discusses, and provides context to understand the significance of, the most important judicial decisions and administrative rulings and regulations promulgated by the Internal Revenue Service and Treasury Department during 2001 - and sometimes a little farther back in time if we find the item particularly humorous or outrageous. Most Treasury Regulations, however, are so complex that they cannot be discussed in detail and, anyway, only a devout masochist would read them all the way through; just the basic topic and fundamental principles are highlighted. Amendments to the Internal Revenue Code generally are not discussed except to …

An Innovative Soil Test For Predicting Nitrogen Mineralization, F. M. Hons, R. L. Haney, A J. Franzluebbers
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
A routine soil testing procedure for soil N mineralization is needed that is rapid and precise. Not accounting for N mineralization can result in over application of N, especially in soils with a history of manure application. Our objectives were to compare results from a recently proposed rapid lab procedure with i) long-term N mineralization under standard laboratory conditions, ii) actual forage N uptake from soil receiving dairy cattle (Bas taurus) manure in a two-year field study and iii) yields of various crops throughout Texas and Oklahoma. The rapid procedure is based on the quantity of CO2 …
Soil Health And Global Sustainability: Translating Science Into Practice, John W. Doran
Soil Health And Global Sustainability: Translating Science Into Practice, John W. Doran
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Interest in the quality and health of soil has been stimulated by recent awareness that soil is vital to both production of food and fiber and global ecosystems function. Soil health, or quality, can be broadly defined as the capacity of a living soil to function, within natural or managed ecosystem boundaries, to sustain plant and animal productivity, maintain or enhance water and air quality, and promote plant and animal health. Soil quality and health change over time due to natural events or human impacts. They are enhanced by management and land-use decisions that weigh the multiple functions of soil …
Soil Health As An Indicator Of Sustainable Management, John W. Doran, Stamatis Stamatiadis, John Haberern
Soil Health As An Indicator Of Sustainable Management, John W. Doran, Stamatis Stamatiadis, John Haberern
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Population growth, a widening gap between the rich and poor, environmental degradation, and a re-evaluation of energy use and alternatives will shape life in the 21st century. We will be challenged to increase food supplies for a global population one-and-a-half to two times its current size. But as agricultural systems grow to meet the demands of more people, increased pressure will be placed on our natural resources: competition for land, water and energy resources from both urban and industrial sectors becomes more acute and the available land base remains static or shrinks. Under current practices increased food production will greatly …

Recycled Paper Products As Substitutes For Gelling Agent In Screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Larval Diet, M. F. Chaudhury, L. Alfredo Alvarez, L. Lopez Velazquez
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Absorbent recycled paper products were tested and compared with a sodium polyacrylate gelling agent, Aquatain, for solidifying larval diets of the screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel). A recycled newsprint product, Terra-Mulch, when mixed with water and dietary ingredients produced a diet medium of homogeneous texture that supported larval growth and development comparable to the standard diet prepared with the gelling agent. Biological yields as calculated from number of pupae per tray from both the diets were similar. Three other types of recycled paper products were tested. Although less homogeneous in texture, these diets were as good as the diet with Terra-Mulch. …

Genome Scale Comparison Of Mycobacterium Avium Subsp. Paratuberculosis With Mycobacterium Avium Subsp. Avium Reveals Potential Diagnostic Sequences, John Bannantine, Emily Baechler, Qing Zhang, Lingling Li, Vivek Kapur
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The genetic similarity between Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis and other mycobacterial species has confounded the development of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis-specific diagnostic reagents. Random shotgun sequencing of the M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis genome in our laboratories has shown >98% sequence identity with Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium in some regions. However, an in silico comparison of the largest annotated M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis contigs, totaling 2,658,271 bp, with the unfinished M. avium subsp. avium genome has revealed 27 predicted M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis coding sequences that do not align with M. avium subsp. avium sequences. BLASTP analysis of the 27 predicted …

Winter Survival In Switchgrass Populations Bred For High Ivdmd, Kenneth P. Vogel, A. A. Hopkins, K. J. Moore, K. D. Johnson, I. T. Carlson
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
In vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) was improved by three cycles (C) of recurrent selection in a switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) population but significant winter kill occurred in the Cycle 4 (C4) mass selection nursery. Stand density losses in strains differing in IVDMD also were noted in pastures intensively grazed for 3 yr. Two studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of genetic changes in IVDMD on plant survival of switchgrass. Seed was harvested from the original high IVDMD C3 parent clones to produce half-sib family seedlings that were planted into a replicated half-sib progeny evaluation nursery in 1991 …
