Sex Tourism And The Child: Latin America's And The United States' Failure To Prosecute Sex Tourists, Kathy J. Steinman Jan 2002

Sex Tourism And The Child: Latin America's And The United States' Failure To Prosecute Sex Tourists, Kathy J. Steinman

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

The international tourism industry drives the world's economy and often provides a potential solution to the economic problems of developing countries. Since the 1960s, international travel has increased seven-fold. It is estimated that by 2010, the number of international tourists will be 967 million. However, there is a darker side to the tourism industry, which delves into the realm of child prostitution and exploitation, namely sex tourism. Child sex tourism is an incredibly lucrative, worldwide industry. In recent years, Central and South America have become the new "playground" for sexual predators seeking children as their prey. This note focuses on …

The Puffery Of Lawyers, Rodney A. Smolla Jan 2002

The Puffery Of Lawyers, Rodney A. Smolla

University of Richmond Law Review

Lawyers advertise to attract clients. Politicians advertise to attract voters. Businesses advertise to attract customers. All of these advertisers advertise with a common subtext: choose me, because I'm better than the rest. Hire me, vote for me, buy my product, and good things will happen. The message may be blunt, explicit, direct, linear. But often it is not. The bludgeon is not the tool of choice in modem mass advertising. The message, more commonly, is presented with subtlety, often merely suggested, often presented with indirection, irony, camp, or comedy. Information as such is not the point. The stuff of modern …

The Blurry Line Between "Mad" And "Bad": Is "Lack-Of-Control" A Workable Standard For Sexually Violent Predators?, Georgia Smith Hamilton Jan 2002

The Blurry Line Between "Mad" And "Bad": Is "Lack-Of-Control" A Workable Standard For Sexually Violent Predators?, Georgia Smith Hamilton

University of Richmond Law Review

In January 1993, thirty-one-year-old Michael Crane entered a tanning salon in Johnson County, Kansas and exposed himself to the nineteen-year-old female attendant. Thirty minutes later, he entered a nearby video store and waited for all of the customers to leave. Once the store was empty, Crane exposed himself to the twenty-year-old female clerk, threatened to rape her, grabbed her by the back of the neck, and demanded that she perform oral sex on him. He then suddenly and abruptly stopped the attack and ran out ofthe store.

DNA-based vaccines were employed to assess protective immunity against herpes simplex virus in experimental infections of hairless (strain SKH1) and BALB/c mice. Mice were vaccinated with plasmids containing the herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) glycoprotein B (gB) or D (gD) genes under the human cytomegalovirus immediate-early promoter control. Vaccines were injected intramuscularly (i.m.) or intraperitoneally (i.p.) as purified DNA alone or as formulations supplemented with different non-ionic block copolymers. Antibody responses were assessed by immunofluorescence and radioimmunoprecipitation assays. Mice inoculated with either gB or gD plasmid, alone or with non-ionic block copolymers CRL 1029 and CRL 1190, produced high levels …

Capacitative Calcium Entry Mechanism In Porcine Oocytes, Zoltán Macháty, Jagdeece J. Ramsoondar, Aaron J. Bonk, Kenneth R. Bondioli, Randall S. Prather Jan 2002

Capacitative Calcium Entry Mechanism In Porcine Oocytes, Zoltán Macháty, Jagdeece J. Ramsoondar, Aaron J. Bonk, Kenneth R. Bondioli, Randall S. Prather

Faculty Publications

The presence of the capacitative Ca2+ entry mechanism was investigated in porcine oocytes. In vitro-matured oocytes were treated with thapsigargin in Ca2+-free medium for 3 h to deplete intracellular calcium stores. After restoring extracellular calcium, a large calcium influx was measured by using the calcium indicator dye fura-2, indicating capacitative Ca2+ entry. A similar divalent cation influx could also be detected with the Mn2+-quench technique after inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate-induced Ca2+ release. In both cases, lanthanum, the Ca2+ permeable channel inhibitor, completely blocked the influx caused by store depletion. Heterologous expression of Drosophila trp in porcine oocytes enhanced the thapsigargin-induced Ca2+ influx. …

Faculty Publications

Bovine brucellosis is a serious zoonotic disease affecting some populations of Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) and bison (Bison bison) in the Greater Yellowstone Area, USA. The fear that elk and/or bison may spread Brucella abortus to livestock has prompted efforts to reduce or eliminate the disease in wildlife. Brucella abortus strain RB51 (RB51) vaccine has recently been approved for use in cattle. Unlike strain 19 vaccine, RB51 does not cause false positive reactions on standard brucellosis serologic tests. If effective, it may become the vaccine of choice for wildlife. In February 1995, 45 serologically negative female elk calves …

An Indirect Elisa To Detect The Serologic Response Of Elk (Cervus Elaphus Nelsoni) Inoculated With Brucella Abortus Strain Rb51, Lesley A. Colby, Gerhardt G. Schurig, Philip H. Elzer Jan 2002

An Indirect Elisa To Detect The Serologic Response Of Elk (Cervus Elaphus Nelsoni) Inoculated With Brucella Abortus Strain Rb51, Lesley A. Colby, Gerhardt G. Schurig, Philip H. Elzer

Faculty Publications

An indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to identify elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) with Brucella abortus strain RB51 (RB51)-specific antibodies using a mouse monoclonal antibody specific for bovine IgG1. This test was relatively easy to perform, accurate, and easily reproducible; therefore it could be standardized for use between laboratories. In addition, we attempted to compensate for inherent variabilities encountered when comparing ELISA readings from multiple samples taken from many animals over time. Optical density (OD) readings for each sample were converted into a percent positivity value for analysis. A negative cutoff value was determined above which a sample was …

Brucella Abortus Strain Rb51 Vaccination In Elk Ii. Failure Of High Dosage To Prevent Abortion, Terry J. Kreeger, Walter E. Cook, William H. Edwards, Philip H. Elzer, Steven C. Olsen

Faculty Publications

Brucella abortus strain RB51 is used as a vaccine because it induces antibodies that do not react on standard serologic tests for brucellosis allowing differentiation between vaccination and infection. Strain RB51 was evaluated in captive elk (Cervus elaphus) to determine if vaccination protected against abortion following experimental challenge. Thirty elk were vaccinated intramuscularly with 1.0 × 1010 colony-forming units (CFU) of strain RB51 in March 1998. Fourteen of these were given a booster dose of 1.13 × 1010 CFU exactly 1 yr later. All vaccinated elk seroconverted via a modified dot blot assay to strain RB51 with the booster group …

The Ta (transcribed, subset a) subfamily of L1 LINEs (long interspersed elements) is characterized by a 3-bp ACA sequence in the 3′ untranslated region and contains ∼520 members in the human genome. Here, we have extracted 468 Ta L1Hs (L1 human specific) elements from the draft human genomic sequence and screened individual elements using polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) assays to determine their phylogenetic origin and levels of human genomic diversity. One hundred twenty-four of the elements amenable to complete sequence analysis were full length (∼6 kb) and have apparently escaped any 5′ truncation. Forty-four of these full-length elements have two intact open …

Effects Of Melatonin On Hemolymph Glucose And Lactate Concentrations In The Fiddler Crab, Uca Pugilator, Kathryn M. Dalton Jan 2002

Effects Of Melatonin On Hemolymph Glucose And Lactate Concentrations In The Fiddler Crab, Uca Pugilator, Kathryn M. Dalton

Honors Theses

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is an indolamine hormone produced by the pineal gland that works to regulate sleep/wake cycles and activity rhythms. The effects of melatonin in metabolism are far from understood. Melatonin was injected into the fiddler crab, Uca pugilator, to investigate the effects of melatonin on hemolymph glucose and lactate levels. Following injection at t=O, hemolymph samples were collected at t=O.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 5.0 hours. Melatonin caused a decrease in the stress response to injection and also caused delayed hyperglycemia. Melatonin-injected crabs also retained the glucose and lactate rhythymicity when compared to saline-injected crabs. Glucose and lactate rhythms followed …

Figuring Rhetoric: From Antistrophe To Apostrophe Through Catastrophe, Jane Sutton, Mari Lee Mifsud Jan 2002

Figuring Rhetoric: From Antistrophe To Apostrophe Through Catastrophe, Jane Sutton, Mari Lee Mifsud

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This essay explores rhetoric tropologically through various strophes: antistrophe, catastrophe, and apostrophe. Our purpose is to delineate problems and possibilities that these tropes pose for rhetoric in an effort to create new rhetorics. We seek to display the antistrophic and catastrophic figurations of rhetoric and then use visual lenses of photography and cinema to disrupt the figurations. Following the disruption, we seek to heighten sensibilities to other figurations, in particular an apostrophic figuration. We cast apostrophe as a figure for change because it marks a deeply felt turn toward difference and otherness. Turned as such, rhetoric becomes erotic.

Colony Composition And Demographics Of Beavers In Illinois, Stanley T. Mctaggart Jan 2002

Colony Composition And Demographics Of Beavers In Illinois, Stanley T. Mctaggart

Masters Theses

Beavers (Castor canadensis) have been extensively studied throughout North America, but little research has been conducted on this species in Illinois and the Midwest. Beavers exhibit wide variations in colony composition and demographics over their broad geographic range, so regional research is important for sound management. The objectives of this study were to investigate the: (1) typical composition of beaver colonies in Illinois; (2) reproductive potential of female beavers in Illinois; (3) sex-age composition of beaver populations in Illinois; and (4) efficacy of night-vision surveys versus removal trapping for estimating colony size. This study was conducted during the 1999-00 and …

Anger: In Black & White: A Meta Analysis, James Hazlewood Jan 2002

Anger: In Black & White: A Meta Analysis, James Hazlewood

Masters Theses

The following research investigates whether black and white populations have divergent perceptions of anger and anger expressions in black and white males. A great deal of the research to follow concerns itself with exploring what anger is and how it is delineated. What becomes readily apparent is that anger is a complex component of human experience. There is general agreement that culture and environment are important components in anger expression. The purpose of this research is three fold: 1. Investigate the definition of anger. 2. Investigate whether black and white populations view anger differently and if so how, and 3. …
