Regional Specific Brain Apoe Modulation By The Estrous Cycle And Exogenous Estrogen, Emily Rosario
Regional Specific Brain Apoe Modulation By The Estrous Cycle And Exogenous Estrogen, Emily Rosario
Masters Theses
Previous studies have demonstrated that 17β-estradiol can modify apolipoprotein E (apoE) expression. I found that apoE protein varied as a function of the estrous cycle and 17β-estradiol (E2) in a region specific manner in the mouse brain. I also found that apoE concentration was lowest on estrus in the hippocampus, cingulate cortex and frontal cortex; apoE concentration was highest on estrus in the olfactory bulb and cerebellum. No changes in apoE were found in the striatum throughout the estrous cycle. Exogenous E2 significantly raised tissue levels in the olfactory bulb and cerebellum, but did not increase apoE in cortical samples …
Phylogeography And Genetic Diversity Of The Seal Salamander (Desmognathus Monticola), Erin D. Casey
Phylogeography And Genetic Diversity Of The Seal Salamander (Desmognathus Monticola), Erin D. Casey
Masters Theses
Phylogeography is defined as the spatial distribution of taxa with respect to geologic and geographic events. It is well documented that the distributions of many taxa have been affected by glacial events during the Pleistocene Era. The patterns generated can be very complex and result from shifts in climate and/or vegetation.
The Seal salamander, (Desmognathus monticola), is one species that still has questions pertaining to its phylogeography. The range of this species extends from southwestern Pennsylvania to northern Alabama and Georgia, with a highly disjunct, state-endangered population in the Red Hills of Alabama. The main goal of this study …
Mitochondrial Dna And Microsatellite Genetic Variation Of Dollar Sunfish (Lepomis Marginatus), Nancy A. Schable
Mitochondrial Dna And Microsatellite Genetic Variation Of Dollar Sunfish (Lepomis Marginatus), Nancy A. Schable
Masters Theses
Dollar sunfish (Lepomis marginatus) at the Savannah River Site were sampled from two radiocesium contaminated ponds with a history of thermal elevation and from reference ponds with no history of radioactive or thermal contamination. Fluorescent sequencing of a portion of the mitochondrial control region showed no genetic variation within or between populations. Centrarchidae microsatellite loci Lma 120 (6 alleles, N=124 from 5 populations), Lma 20 (10 alleles, N=37 from 3 populations) and Rb 7 (14 alleles. N=17 from 2 populations) were variable for dollar sunfish. An additional 9 microsatellite primer pairs were designed for dollar sunfish. Testing of the designed …
Phylogenetics Of Lymnaeidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) With Emphasis On The Evolution Of Susceptibility To Fascioloides Magna Infection, Sarah Renee Joyce
Phylogenetics Of Lymnaeidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) With Emphasis On The Evolution Of Susceptibility To Fascioloides Magna Infection, Sarah Renee Joyce
Masters Theses
Snails in Lymnaeidae serve as intermediate hosts in the transmission of many trematode species, including Fascioloides magna that is responsible for disease and death in domestic livestock in North America. Previous classifications of lymnaeid snails have relied primarily on morphological characters that exhibit high levels of homoplasy; thereby, impeding a sound assessment of relationships in this group. The present study provides a phylogenetic hypothesis for lymnaeid snails employing sequences from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nrDNA, and addresses the evolution of susceptibility to Fascioloides infection in lymnaeid snails. The final data set, comprising ten species of lymnaeid snails …
A Web Content Management And Personalization Model Using One-To-One Strategy For Higher Educational Institutions, Yee Pong Ng
A Web Content Management And Personalization Model Using One-To-One Strategy For Higher Educational Institutions, Yee Pong Ng
Masters Theses
This research explored a Web content management and personalization model for higher educational institutions. Through a review of literature and data collected from users, it formulated a conceptual model for Web content management and personalization. The study used the Web site of School of Technology at Eastern Illinois University as a typical case from which to develop the model for higher educational institutions. Understanding the factors influencing user attitudes about the adoption of new Web technologies is extremely important. Such an understanding can help Web developers develop a theoretical framework for a Web model as well as identify its components. …
Latitudinal Differentiation In The Effects Of The Toxic Dinoflagellate Alexandrium Spp. On The Feeding And Reproduction Of Populations Of The Copepod Acartia Hudsonica, Sean Colin, Hans G. Dam
Latitudinal Differentiation In The Effects Of The Toxic Dinoflagellate Alexandrium Spp. On The Feeding And Reproduction Of Populations Of The Copepod Acartia Hudsonica, Sean Colin, Hans G. Dam
Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications
Blooms of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium spp. increase in their frequency, toxicity and historical presence with increasing latitude from New Jersey (USA) to the Gaspé peninsula (Canada). Biogeographic variation in these blooms results in differential exposure of geographically separate copepod populations to toxic Alexandrium. We hypothesize that the ability of copepods to feed and reproduce on toxic Alexandrium should be higher in copepods from regions that are frequently exposed to toxic Alexandrium blooms. We tested this hypothesis with factorial common environment experiments in which female adults of the copepod Acartia hudsonica from five separate populations ranging from New Jersey to …
Distance Education And Dementia Caregivers: A Comparison Of Three Methods, Mary Colleen Corrigan
Distance Education And Dementia Caregivers: A Comparison Of Three Methods, Mary Colleen Corrigan
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the research is to examine the family experience of dementia caregiving and design an educational intervention to assist family members in the caregiving role. Stress results when a caregiver confronts environmental demands (dementia behaviors) that threaten personal well-being. The perception of threat is the process of primary stress appraisal. Caregivers evaluate coping options, a process of secondary stress appraisal. Positive secondary appraisal (view the situation as amenable to change) has the potential to trigger re-appraisal of the primary threat, and to reduce overall stress.
Education is one way to affect secondary appraisal. Adult learners benefit from progressive …

The Uniform Trust Code (2000) And Its Application To Ohio, David M. English
Faculty Publications
This article provides an overview of the U.T.C., focusing on how its enactment would change existing Ohio law. The drafting of the U.T.C. was prompted by the much greater use of trusts in recent years. This greater use of the trust and consequent rise in the number of day-to-day questions involving trusts led to a recognition by the Commissioners that the trust law in most states is thin, leaving many gaps between the often few statutes and reported cases
The Establishment Clause As A Structural Restraint: Validations And Ramifications, Carl H. Esbeck
The Establishment Clause As A Structural Restraint: Validations And Ramifications, Carl H. Esbeck
Faculty Publications
The opening phrase of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." The free exercise clause functions as an individual right with its purpose being to forestall personal religious harm. Its underlying principle is that in religious matters a person ought to be free of coercion caused by the government and thereby not made to suffer for cause of conscience. The function of the establishment clause is altogether different, for its purpose is to restrain government from using its powers to act on matters …

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning
Editors' Message
In his essay Two Kinds of Thinking Carl Jung describes direct and indirect thinking. Associated with language, direct thinking’s premier ability is parsing and defining reality so that we might work on that reality and act in the world. Associated with imagery, dreaming, and story telling, indirect thinking taps the realm of mythos where we dwell in fantasies and paradoxes. Indirect thinking is neither a contradiction nor denial of rationality. Rather, it is thinking that operates by a different logic, one capable of offering different insights, different versions of possible realities.
Jung’s two kinds of thinking reflect a …

True learning—learning which results in some permanent cognitive change—is far too unpredictable to be controlled by format curricular designs. The formal curriculum of English studies is valuable largely as a stage setting for educational accidents.
Beyond Merit Selection, Luke Bierman
Beyond Merit Selection, Luke Bierman
Fordham Urban Law Journal
This Article reviews some of the factors that have diminished the appeal of merit selection for judges. It examines why merit selection has never been an entirely successful answer for reformers looking for nonpartisan solutions. It advocates addressing other aspects of the judicial office to promote judicial independence. It concludes by suggesting that there be an educational credential for becoming a judge. Such a solution, it is argued, would offer legitimacy to judicial aspirants and would provide independent, accountable, impartial, and well-trained judges regardless of selection method.
The Cedaw As A Collective Approach To Women's Rights, Brad R. Roth
The Cedaw As A Collective Approach To Women's Rights, Brad R. Roth
Michigan Journal of International Law
This Article will identify the individualist paradigm with the main current of contemporary liberal-individualist political thought, and more specifically with the approach to women's rights reflected in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which can be read most straightforwardly as reflecting a liberal-individualist conception of how the individual, society, and the State interrelate. This approach, dominant in the international human rights system as well as in the legal systems of some of the most influential States, can usefully be identified as that of the political Center.
Is Tom Shaffer A Covenantal Lawyer?, Marie Failinger
Is Tom Shaffer A Covenantal Lawyer?, Marie Failinger
Faculty Scholarship
In this festschrift article in honor of Tom Shaffer, the author considers what Shaffer’s work may share with “covenantal” ethics, a form of ethical argument that is not interchangeable with other traditions familiar from Shaffer’s body of work, such as the ethics of friendship or care or the ethics of virtue. Describing the ancient understanding of covenants, the article explores a few of the complexities arising from covenantal ethics in a professional context, themes such as the creation of obligation by historical decision, which has implications for the treatment of strangers; the ambivalence of covenantal ethics on the value of …

Kitty Hawk And Beyond: The Wright Brothers And The Early Years Of Aviation: A Photographic History, Ronald R. Geibert, Patrick B. Nolan
Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff
This handsomely illustrated book tells the story of two twentieth-century heroes who fashioned from the raw materials of ingenuity and ambition a legacy that will live forever in aviation history. Aided by over 100 rarely seen photographs from the Wright brothers' personal collection, the authors tell the story of Wilbur and Orville Wright: how they went from operating a printing shop and bicycle store in Dayton, Ohio, to ushering in the Age of Flight; why Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, was chosen as the site of their initial experiments; and how Orville made the crucial discovery that led to man's first …

Technology has changed drastically since my arrival at Asbury Theological Seminary as media librarian in 1981. We have come a long way from thermal transparencies and black and white reel to reel video. However, be assured that since technology is constantly changing, I am always learning as we go through each class. I will work actively with you as we move through this course together.

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law
The April 2, 2002, Federal Circuit opinion in Enzo Biochem, Inc. v. Gen-Probe Inc., may have the greatest potential impact on a multidimensional basis of any decision from that court in recent years. Far more important than whatever disruption takes place domestically—which may be fixed through Congressional or further judicial action—one must look to the foreign impact of the Enzo opinion. This decision threatens to undermine the patent basis for American protection of biotechnology inventions abroad, once the case is understood and embodied in the several foreign patent laws. Problems with Enzo are not limited to biotechnology. What’s good for …

Borrowings Into Kisi As Evidence Of Mande Expansionism And Influence, George Tucker Childs
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Strong claims have been made as to the influence of Mande languages on the languages of the Atlantic Group. This paper analyzes Mande borrowings in one Atlantic language in order to understand the nature of that influence. The Atlantic language of focus is Kisi, a member of the Southern Branch, spoken primarily in Guinea. The Kisi people have separated from their closest relatives on the Atlantic Coast in historic times, probably due to the second Mande expansionist wave of the sixteenth century at the collapse of the Mali Empire. Today the Kisi are completely surrounded and interpenetrated by speakers of …
