Nf526 Spring Millers, Ronald C. Seymour, Gary L. Hein

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Biology, migration, and management of spring millers.

Millers can be abundant in and around homes each year, especially in May and early June. At this time of year, the moths are most likely the adult stage of the army cutworm, a common pest of wheat and alfalfa.

When millers emerge and begin to move westward in the spring, area residents have little recourse but to patiently await their departure. There are a few tactics, however, that can help lessen moth activity in and around homes:

Keep outside lighting to a minimum. These night-flying moths are attracted to lights. A porch …

G02-1443 Care Of Veterinary Vaccine Syringes, Dicky D. Griffin, Steve Ensley, David R. Smith, Grant Dewell, Marilyn Buhman Jan 2002

G02-1443 Care Of Veterinary Vaccine Syringes, Dicky D. Griffin, Steve Ensley, David R. Smith, Grant Dewell, Marilyn Buhman

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide explains the basics of veterinary vaccine syringe cleaning and care.

Inadequately cleaned vaccine syringes are often responsible for localized infections associated with vaccination. Swellings around the injection site is common, especially when killed vaccines such as clostridial bacterins are given subcutaneously. Generally, these swellings can be considered good evidence that the animal is developing a proper immune response, but if the injection site swelling is greater than a small hen's egg, the swelling may be due to infection and should be examined.

Refugee Law Is Not Immigration Law, James C. Hathaway Jan 2002

Refugee Law Is Not Immigration Law, James C. Hathaway

Book Chapters

The spectacle of the governments of Australia, Indonesia, and Norway playing pass the parcel with 400 refugees, most of them Afghans, is not an edifying one... Yet the issues of responsibility, over which the three governments are arguing, are important ones which, left unsettled in this and other cases, could only worsen the prospects for all refugees in the longer run. For the truth is that when what agreement has been painfully achieved between nations on how to deal with refugees breaks down, the natural reaction is to erect even higher barriers than already exist.

Introduction: Theorizing The Connections Among Systems Of Subordination, Nancy Levit Jan 2002

Introduction: Theorizing The Connections Among Systems Of Subordination, Nancy Levit

Faculty Works

Theorizing the Connections Among Systems of Subordination introduces a symposium that addresses issues on the leading edge of identity theory, race theory, and critical social theory. It explains the concepts of anti-essentialism, intersectionality, multiple consciousness, multi-dimensionality, and post-intersectionality. It investigates the ways specific types of oppression - such as racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia - support and feed off of one another. It explores the dynamics of subordination that make different forms of subordination connected to each other - the mechanisms by which subordinating systems buttress each other. Where one sees sexism, one frequently can find racism; where classism exists, …

The Economics Of Enmity, Ward Farnsworth Jan 2002

The Economics Of Enmity, Ward Farnsworth

University of Chicago Law Review

This Article considers whether courts should regard enmity between litigants as a transaction cost and thus as a justification for awarding damages when a property right would otherwise be available as a remedy. It begins by examining the phenomenon of enmity generally, and concludes that enmities can be both ethically justified and instrumentally useful depending on their origins. The normative status of enmity also depends on the consequences of how it is expressed. The law understandably tends to punish enmity when it motivates out-of-pocket expenditures to make someone else worse off, but generally not when it motivates the absorption of …

Fiber Optic Sensor Response To High Levels Of Fat In Cream, Czarena L. Crofcheck, Frederick A. Payne, Clair L. Hicks, M. Pinar Mengüç, Sue E. Nokes Jan 2002

Fiber Optic Sensor Response To High Levels Of Fat In Cream, Czarena L. Crofcheck, Frederick A. Payne, Clair L. Hicks, M. Pinar Mengüç, Sue E. Nokes

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

A light backscatter technique using optical fibers to deliver and receive light was investigated for measuring the milkfat content of unhomogenized cream. Light backscatter through cream at wavelengths of 450 to 900 nm was measured for fiber separation distances from 2 to 6.5 mm and for cream containing 10 to ~40 weight percent (wt%) milkfat. Unhomogenized cream (~40 wt% milkfat) was mixed with skim milk (~0.05 wt% milkfat) to yield samples with five different milkfat levels. Three optical response models were tested for correlation with milkfat content: one using the light intensity measurement at a single separation distance, the second …

Effects Of Field Size And Landscape Composition On Grassland Birds In South-Central Iowa, David Joseph Horn, Rolf R. Koford, Malinda L. Braland Jan 2002

Effects Of Field Size And Landscape Composition On Grassland Birds In South-Central Iowa, David Joseph Horn, Rolf R. Koford, Malinda L. Braland

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Many species of grassland birds have been shown to avoid smaller fields. The avoidance of smaller fields, however, has not been consistently reported; avoidance may occur in one study, but not in another. To examine one possible reason for these inconsistencies, we examined how landscape composition influenced the relations between occurrence or abundance and field size. The study took place during the 1998 breeding season on 44 Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) fields located in Adair, Ringgold, and Union counties. The relations between occurrence, abundance, and field size were not influenced by landscape composition for any species.

Factors Influencing The Occurrence Of Birds That Use Feeders In Iowa, David Joseph Horn, Steve E. Fairbairn, Richard J. Hollis Jan 2002

Factors Influencing The Occurrence Of Birds That Use Feeders In Iowa, David Joseph Horn, Steve E. Fairbairn, Richard J. Hollis

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Since its inception in 1984, data from the annual Iowa "Winter Bird Feeder Survey" have provided valuable information about birds that use feeders in Iowa such as spatial and temporal population trends. Using data from the 1988 and 1994 Surveys, we examined how the occurrence of bird species that use feeders was influenced by geographic location, the habitat surrounding a house, and the types of seeds offered at a house. Of the 23 species examined, the occurrence of 8 species was influenced by latitude, 22 species were influenced by the habitat surrounding the house, and 22 species were influenced by …
