Diabetic Neuropathy. Correlation With Other Diabetic Microvascular Complications, Sami A. Bashi, Salem D. Alsuwaidan, Adnan A. Awada, Mohammed A. Al-Jumah, Ahmed A. Al-Arfaj, Osama M. Alem

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: We studied the frequency of neuropathy in Saudi patients with definite diabetic microvascular complications and compared it to patients without complications. A high frequency of neuropathy in patients with definite microvascular complications would suggest a vascular etiology. METHODS: The study group consisted of 201 type-2 diabetic patients followed in the diabetic clinic of King Fahad National Guard Hospital, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. These patients were screened for microvascular disease. Only symmetrical distal sensory and motor neuropathy cases were included in the study. Screening for retinopathy was carried out according to Klien’s criteria and nephropathy was diagnosed if albuminuria, …

Golfers' Tort Liability - A Critique Of An Emerging Standard, Daniel E. Lazaroff Jan 2002

Golfers' Tort Liability - A Critique Of An Emerging Standard, Daniel E. Lazaroff

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

This article argues that the recklessness standard applied by most contemporary courts to tort claims initiated by one sports participant against a co-participant is inappropriate in the context of golf. Rather, Professor Lazaroff asserts that golf is an activity in which a negligence standard should apply and that this lower threshold for liability can be utilized without chilling participation or altering the inherent nature of the sport. In sum, the recklessness standard generally used for more active or contact sports is unnecessary in the more passive and genteel setting of golf competition.

Incongruent Disproportionality, K. G. Jan Pillai Jan 2002

Incongruent Disproportionality, K. G. Jan Pillai

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Since 1997, a sharply divided Supreme Court has decreed that all laws enacted by Congress in exercise of its enforcement powers under the Fourteenth Amendment must pass a newly-minted test of "congruence and proportionality." The Court insisted that the test is necessary to restrain Congress from enacting "substantive" legislation that transgresses its "remedial" powers and unconstitutionally intrudes upon the domain of state sovereignty. Every enforcement legislation that subsequently came up for the Court's scrutiny was held unconstitutional for failure to satisfy the proportionality test. The most heartwrenching casualty of the test is the American with Disabilities Act, which the Court …

The Spectre Of Star Chamber: The Role Of An Ancient English Tribunal In The Supreme Court's Self-Incrimination Jurisprudence, Frank Riebli Jan 2002

The Spectre Of Star Chamber: The Role Of An Ancient English Tribunal In The Supreme Court's Self-Incrimination Jurisprudence, Frank Riebli

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The author investigates the Supreme Court's allusions to the ancient English Court of Star Chamber. Throughout its history, the Supreme Court has used the spectre of Star Chamber to develop at least three themes in its Self-Incrimination Clause jurisprudence. Star Chamber appears as a symbol of brutality, the end of a slippery slope towards which our criminal justice system would drift but for the Self-Incrimination Clause's protections. Star Chamber is frequently used to describe the boundaries of the "testimonial evidence" doctrine, and thereby the scope and policies underlying the Self-Incrimination Clause. Finally, Star Chamber has appeared as a symbol of …

Dinomor: Evoking Memories Of Dino's Dreams And Death, Tonu R. Soidla Jan 2002

Dinomor: Evoking Memories Of Dino's Dreams And Death, Tonu R. Soidla

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This is a transpersonal fantasy about the last days of the dinosaurs ca. sixty-five million years ago. I suppose that communication with the Timeless (or if one prefers to put it--with Another) in one's mind precedes intraspecies communication and that one of the first recognizable acts of mystical life is surrender. A more specific and of course more far-out and irreverent hypothesis underlying this fantasy is that--unlike the bulk of individual memory records--Timeless memory "seeds" of unspecified origin are transmittable by a [retro]enterovirus. This leads to the possibility of horizontal transmission of this type of memory. In the new host, …

An Analysis Of Client Records To Determine The Efficacy Of A Child Abuse Prevention Program For Parents, Monica Lynn Dellamea Jan 2002

An Analysis Of Client Records To Determine The Efficacy Of A Child Abuse Prevention Program For Parents, Monica Lynn Dellamea

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The alarming amount of abuse and maltreatment incurred by children in the United States has drawn large scale public attention only over the past century. Governmental agencies have since implemented programs to protect children from abusers after the abuse has been reported and sufficiently proven. Over recent decades new types of programs have originated to protect children before abuse occurs by educating parents who possess high risk factors for abusing children. These types of programs operate on the assumption that if parents can become knowledgeable about basic fundamentals of child development, learn to deal with daily stressors and challenges, and …

A Baseline Assessment Of Furbearers On The Upper Coastal Plain Of Virginia, A. Scott Bellows, Joseph C. Mitchell

Virginia Journal of Science

We assessed the status of furbearing mammals on Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia during the 1998-1999 trapping season with the cooperation of local licensed trappers. Our analyses were based on 345 captures representing of 10 mammal species, ranging from one bobcat (Lynx rufus) to 157 beavers (Castor canadensis). Mean number of captures per 100 trap nights was 17.0. Captures varied from 11.9 to 17.9 per 100 trap nights for conibear traps and 9.7 to 18.3 per 100 trap nights for leg-hold traps. External measurements of six species were similar to those reported for other populations …

Application Of Classification-Tree Methods To Identify Nitrate Sources In Ground Water, Timothy B. Spruill, William J. Showers, Stephen S. Howe Jan 2002

Application Of Classification-Tree Methods To Identify Nitrate Sources In Ground Water, Timothy B. Spruill, William J. Showers, Stephen S. Howe

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A study was conducted to determine if nitrate sources in ground water (fertilizer on crops, fertilizer on golf courses, irrigation spray from hog (Sus scrofa) wastes, and leachate from poultry litter and septic systems) could be classified with 80% or greater success. Two statistical classification-tree models were devised from 48 water samples containing nitrate from five source categories. Model 1 was con- structed by evaluating 32 variables and selecting four primary predictor variables (δ15N, nitrate to ammonia ratio, sodium to potassium ratio, and zinc) to identify nitrate sources. A δ15N value of nitrate plus …

Behavior Analysis: No Defense Required, James D. Dunne Ph.D. Jan 2002

Behavior Analysis: No Defense Required, James D. Dunne Ph.D.

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

Many people, professional educators and others, criticize what they call behavior modification because they believe it applies only to animals or people with disabilities and represents little more than the application of good common sense. This paper argues that behavior modification, more accurately called behavior analysis, has produced many procedures that apply to the behavior of people with and without disabilities across a variety of settings. This paper examines 4 behavior analytic teaching strategies (Personalized System of Instruction, Programmed Instruction, Direct Instruction, and Precision Teaching) to illustrate the sophistication and wide application of behavior analysis. It concludes that such behavior …

Passing The Torch Of Wildlife And Fisheries Management: Comparing The Attitudes And Values Of Younger And Older Conservation Professionals, Robert M. Muth, Rodney R. Zwick, Martha E. Mather, John F. Organ Jan 2002

Passing The Torch Of Wildlife And Fisheries Management: Comparing The Attitudes And Values Of Younger And Older Conservation Professionals, Robert M. Muth, Rodney R. Zwick, Martha E. Mather, John F. Organ

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Wildlife-related values in American society are undergoing considerable change. Within the last few decades, non-consumptive recreational use of wildlife has increased dramatically; groups that subscribe to animal protection values (ranging from animal welfare to animal rights to animal liberation) are exercising increasing influence over wildlife policy, and the ranks of people who practice wildlife rehabilitation have grown significantly. In this time of questioning and change, it should not be surprising that the attitudes and values of conservation professionals are in transition as well. Within many agencies and academic institutions, the traditional focus on game management (Geist et al. 2001) is …
