A Model Reading Skills Guide For Secondary Teachers To Support Classes Across The Curriculum, Keith Edward Swanson Jan 2002

A Model Reading Skills Guide For Secondary Teachers To Support Classes Across The Curriculum, Keith Edward Swanson

All Graduate Projects

The need for students to learn reading skills in each of their core subject areas was studied. A skills guide, supported by research on effective reading strategies and assessment tools, was then developed to help promote successful reading by secondary students across the curriculum. The guide offers teachers various pre-reading, duringreading, and post-reading activities to enhance the reading done by students in their classes. It also provides assessment tools to enable teachers and students to measure their progress.

Writing An Important Body Of Scholarship: A Proposal For An Embodied Rhetoric Of Professional Practice, Jane Hindman Jan 2002

Writing An Important Body Of Scholarship: A Proposal For An Embodied Rhetoric Of Professional Practice, Jane Hindman

Publications and Research

Identifies a set of professional discursive practices of rhetoric teachers that reveal gendered power relations. Proposes an "embodied rhetoric" characterized and authorized in part by specific sorts of personal author- and context-saturated gestures. Concludes that an embodied rhetoric regenders academic discourse, assures agency and power to feminist theory and praxis, and facilitates efforts to effect change in teachers and students' lives.

Workplace Mythologies And Unemployment Insurance: Exit, Voice And Exhausting All Reasonable Alternatives To Quitting, Deborah Maranville Jan 2002

Workplace Mythologies And Unemployment Insurance: Exit, Voice And Exhausting All Reasonable Alternatives To Quitting, Deborah Maranville

Hofstra Law Review

This article argues that the requirement that workers exhaust alternatives to quitting in order to qualify for unemployment benefits is misguided. The requirement is premised on inaccurate assumptions about the world of work and the situation of employees. Albert Hirschman's Exit, Voice and Loyalty provides a theoretical framework for thinking about decisions to stay or leave in the economic and political realms. The exhaustion requirement is premised on a vision of employment as more like a political community than an economic marketplace. While this vision may be an attractive aspiration, it has little foundation in most twenty-first century workplaces.

Contradictions, Open Secrets, And Feminist Faith In Enlightenment, Heather Hughes Jan 2002

Contradictions, Open Secrets, And Feminist Faith In Enlightenment, Heather Hughes

Feminist Scholarship

INTRODUCTION: Judges often malign exception making as the erosion of legal rules, yet in the same breath sanction the territory that exceptions have eclipsed to date. Judges may embrace as precedent the course of exceptions that has shaped doctrine so far, but then cite the importance of enforcing common law rules to refuse exceptions that would redress violence against women. This paradoxical stance prompts many feminists to target ignorance of violence in women's lives as the source of judicial resistance to establishing exceptions to rules that prevent recovery for women's harms. These feminists call for education, for increased awareness, to …
