Why Embroidery? An Answer From The Ancient Andes, Anne Paul Jan 2002

Why Embroidery? An Answer From The Ancient Andes, Anne Paul

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In her meticulous classification of fabric structures, Irene Emery wrote that needlework "is basically one of the simplest crafts, a homely activity that can be practiced by almost anyone on almost any material. But, with fine and carefully chosen materials plus a high degree of skill and imagination in handling them, needlework can be raised almost to the rank of a fine art" (1966:246). I suspect that Emery would not object to my deletion of the word "almost" when discussing the examples of fine art embroidered by certain pre-Conquest Andeans.

Within the ancient Andean world, needlework is not exclusively identified …

From Court To Convent: A Silk Embroidered Sampler From Colonial Mexico, Bobbie Sumberg Jan 2002

From Court To Convent: A Silk Embroidered Sampler From Colonial Mexico, Bobbie Sumberg

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Silk appears frequently in many Mexican textiles and garments such as rebozos, skirts, and huipils or blouses. In this paper I discuss a different tradition, that of sampler embroidery in the urban style.

Yrene Escandon was reported to be a lady in waiting for Empress Carlotta, who reigned in Mexico with her husband Emperor Maximilien from 1863-1867. During this time and before entering a convent after her service she and some friends embroidered a sampler replete with floral, religious, animal, and bird motifs. Using this remarkable piece in the collection of the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe …

Introduction To Chachapoyas Textile Catalogue., Lena Bjerregaard Jan 2002

Introduction To Chachapoyas Textile Catalogue., Lena Bjerregaard

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

This work contains the thorough analysis of forty-one of the best-preserved textiles from the mummy find at Laguna de los Condores (1997). The textiles are now all in the Leymebamba Museum, either in storage or on exhibition. The textiles were partly found loose in the chullpas, partly as part of a mummy - either as inner or outer wrapping or for instance tucked under the chin of the deceased to keep the head in place.

Conditions:

All the textiles analyzed were in surprisingly good condition - after about 500 years in the rainforest all "normal" organic material would have …

The Women Of Palmyra—Textile Workshops And The Influence Of The Silk Trade In Roman Syria, Cynthia Finlayson Jan 2002

The Women Of Palmyra—Textile Workshops And The Influence Of The Silk Trade In Roman Syria, Cynthia Finlayson

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

By the second century A.D., the oasis empire of Tadmor, Syria (Roman Palmyra) had eclipsed Nabataean Petra to the south in Jordan as the premier trading conduit for the exotic goods of Asia, India, and China as they found their way by caravan and ship to the hungry markets of the West and Rome. Palmyra functioned as the only viable source of water, salt, and pasture for all large trading expeditions as they ventured across the Northern Syrian Desert to the Mediterranean ports of Antioch, Tyre, Sidon, and Aleppo. Sensuous silk was among the most prized of the exotic goods …

Susceptibility Of Raccoons (Procyon Lotor) To Infection With Mycobacterium Bovis, Mitchell V. Palmer, W. Ray Waters, Diana L. Whipple Jan 2002

Susceptibility Of Raccoons (Procyon Lotor) To Infection With Mycobacterium Bovis, Mitchell V. Palmer, W. Ray Waters, Diana L. Whipple

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Tuberculosis due to Mycobacterium bovis infection is endemic in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the northeastern portion of the lower Michigan peninsula (USA). Various wild carnivores and omnivores, including raccoons (Procyon lotor), are infected with M. bovis within the endemic area. To investigate the pathogenesis of tuberculosis in raccoons and the likelihood of M. bovis transmission from infected raccoons to other susceptible hosts, we experimentally inoculated raccoons with single oral doses of M. bovis (ranging from 30 to 1.7 x 105 colony forming units [CFU]), five daily oral doses of M. bovis (ranging from 10 …

Milk Containing Mycobacterium Bovis As A Source Of Infection For White-Tailed Deer Fawns (Odocoileus Virginianus), M. V. Palmer, W. R. Waters, D. L. Whipple Jan 2002

Milk Containing Mycobacterium Bovis As A Source Of Infection For White-Tailed Deer Fawns (Odocoileus Virginianus), M. V. Palmer, W. R. Waters, D. L. Whipple

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Setting:White-tailed deer represent the first wildlife reservoir of Mycobacterium bovis in the United States. The behavior of does with nursing fawns provides several potential mechanisms for disease transmission. Little information exists concerning transmission between doe and fawn, specifically transmammary transmission.

Objective: Determine if fawns can become infected by ingestion of milk replacer containing M. bovis, thus simulating transmission from doe to fawn through contaminated milk.

Design: Seventeen, 21-day-old white-tailed deer fawns were inoculated orally with 2x108 CFU (high dose, n=5), 2.5 x 105 to 2.5 x 106 CFU (medium dose, n=5), and 1x104 CFU (low …

Nebraska's Endangered Species Part 1: Introduction And The Insects, Brett C. Ratcliffe, Steve Spomer

University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information

There is now an ongoing, unprecedented loss of species diversity throughout the world as well as a decline in the absolute numbers of organisms from the smallest microorganism to the largest mammal. The current loss of biota has several causes. One is the destruction, conversion, or degradation of entire ecosystems with the consequent loss of entire assemblages of species. Another is the accelerating loss of individual species within communities or ecosystems as a result of habitat disturbance, pollution, and exploitation. Third, and more subtle, is the loss of genetic variability. Selective pressures such as habitat alteration, the presence of chemical …

A Genetic Evaluation Of Growth In Sheep Using Random Regression Techniques, R. M. Lewis, S. Brotherstone Jan 2002

A Genetic Evaluation Of Growth In Sheep Using Random Regression Techniques, R. M. Lewis, S. Brotherstone

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Repeated measures of live weight in growing animals are used to describe the path by which they travel from birth to maturity. A family of growth functions-the Gompertz is one in particular-has been used successfully to describe this journey with relatively few parameters (most importantly mature size and a rate parameter). However, using these functions to differentiate the genetic merit of individual animals to grow is problematic since the estimates of these parameters are highly correlated and are obtained with varying precision among animals. An alternative is random regression (RR) methodology. It allows environmental effects specific to the time of …

Comparative Epidemiology Of Scrapie Outbreaks In Individual Sheep Focks, C. A. Redman, P. G. Coen, R. M. Lewis, W. S. Dingwall, J. D. Foster, M. E. Chase-Topping, N. Hunter, M. Woolhouse, L. Matthews Jan 2002

Comparative Epidemiology Of Scrapie Outbreaks In Individual Sheep Focks, C. A. Redman, P. G. Coen, R. M. Lewis, W. S. Dingwall, J. D. Foster, M. E. Chase-Topping, N. Hunter, M. Woolhouse, L. Matthews

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Data recording the course of scrapie outbreaks in 4 sheep flocks (2 in Cheviot sheep and 2 in Suffolks) are compared. For each outbreak the data on scrapie incidence and sheep demography and pedigrees cover periods of years or decades. A key finding is that the incidence of clinical cases peaks in sheep 2-3 years old, despite very different forces-of infection. This is consistent with age-specific susceptibility of sheep to scrapie, as has beenreported for cattle to bovine spongiform encephalopathy and for humans to variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Scrapie incidence was higher in ewes than rams and at certain times of years, …

Changes In Muscularity With Growth And Its Relationship With Other Carcass Traits In Three Terminal Sire Breeds Of Sheep, H. E. Jones, R. M. Lewis, M. J. Young, C. C. Warkup Jan 2002

Changes In Muscularity With Growth And Its Relationship With Other Carcass Traits In Three Terminal Sire Breeds Of Sheep, H. E. Jones, R. M. Lewis, M. J. Young, C. C. Warkup

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Data were available for 160 sheep (50 Suffolk males, 50 Suffolk females, 40 Texel males and 20 Charollais males). One fifth of animals within each breed and sex were slaughtered at each of 14, 18 or 22 weeks of age and two-fifths slaughtered at 26 weeks. After slaughter linear measurements were taken on the carcass. The left side of each carcass was then separated into eight joints and each joint dissected into lean, bone and fat. Five muscularity measures (three for the longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) muscle, one for the hind leg and one for the whole carcass) and …

Responses To Selection For Lean Growth In Sheep, G. Simm, R. M. Lewis, B. Grundy, W. S. Dingwall Jan 2002

Responses To Selection For Lean Growth In Sheep, G. Simm, R. M. Lewis, B. Grundy, W. S. Dingwall

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

This paper reports the selection responses achieved, and related results, following 9 years of index selection for lean growth in Suffolk sheep. The breeding goal of the index used comprised carcass lean weight and carcass fat weight at a constant age, with relative economic values of + 3 and –1 per kg. The selection criteria were live weight (LWT), ultrasonic fat depth (UFD) and ultrasonic muscle depth (UMD) adjusted to a constant age of 150 days. By year 9, responses in LWT, UFD and UMD in both sexes, as judged by the divergence between selection and control line performance, amounted …
