G02-1445 Understanding Vaccines, Dicky D. Griffin, Steve Ensley, David R. Smith, Grant Dewell

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide explains the basics of vaccine value, the differences between types of vaccines used in animals, and discusses vaccine selection and vaccination program development.

Vaccines are an important part of disease prevention and control. Like insurance, vaccines come at a cost, including the price of the vaccine, labor to administer the vaccine, localized tissue damage from vaccine injections, and increased metabolic demand of the animal causing potential performance loss during the time the animal is developing a proper immune response. The increased metabolic demand can cause the animal to look depressed and therefore may be confused with illness. This …

The Abcs And Ntbs Of Gmos: The Great European Union-United States Trade Debate - Do European Restrictions On The Trade Of Genetically Modified Organisms Violate Internaitonal Trade Law, Sarah Lively

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The genetic engineering of agriculture has spurred a lively worldwide discussion, and the technology has found both enthusiastic fans and formidable foes. Specifically, the United States has signed on as a proponent of the genetic modification of agriculture. In fact, the United States has become the largest producer of genetically modified organisms ("GMOs") and is consequently the leading exporter of genetically modified goods. On the other side of this debate lies the European Community ("EC"). The European Community is much less enthusiastic about GMOs and effectively questions their presence in our environment and food products. The European Community has focused …

Frye Remains The Standard For Determining The Admissibility Of Expert Testimony In Pennsylvania Courts: Blum V. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Kristie Kline

Duquesne Law Review

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court held that expert testimony, in accordance with the Frye rule, must be generally accepted in the relevant scientific field to be considered as evidence, and that the federal practice of including expert testimony under more relaxed principals would not be followed in Pennsylvania courts.

Legal Obstacles To Private Ordering In Marine Fisheries, Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

Part II of this Article surveys the challenges of marine conservation, the failures of existing regulatory regimes, and the potential for property rights in marine resources. Part III discusses the nature of private ordering, providing examples that arise from the fisheries context. Part IV discusses how legal rules can inhibit private ordering. That section focuses in particular on how antitrust law has impeded cooperative fishery management. Part V then explores possibilities for overcoming antitrust obstacles to private ordering. This Article concludes with some broader thoughts about the implications of this research for resource conservation.

Cattle Cycles, Expectations, And The Age Distribution Of Capital, David Aadland Jan 2002

Cattle Cycles, Expectations, And The Age Distribution Of Capital, David Aadland

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper builds a dynamic forward-looking model describing the approximate ten-year cattle cycle. The theoretical model improves on existing models by (1) allowing cow-calf operators to make investment decisions on both the cow and calf margins, (2) formally recognizing the age distribution of the capital stock, and (3) considering a mixed scheme of rational and naive expectations. The model.is then calibrated and used to simulate artificial data that endogenously generates ten-year cycles in the total stock of cattle.

Economic Principles Of Sustainable Multi-Use Fisheries Management, Keith R. Criddle Jan 2002

Economic Principles Of Sustainable Multi-Use Fisheries Management, Keith R. Criddle

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Economic prescriptions for the sustainable management of fisheries have typically been framed in the context of commercial fisheries. Fishery management failures have been characterized as a consequence of disjointedness between individually rational decisions and globally sensible outcomes-the "tragedy of the commons". The solutions proposed by economists flow from the insight that rational self-interest can lead to socially beneficial outcomes when ownership is secure and prices reflect the opportunity cost of resource use. Theoretical and empirical analyses have demonstrated that sole ownership, individual quotas, territorial use rights, fishing cooperatives, and common property management regimes can promote biologically and economically sustainable fisheries. …

The Owl Question, Faith Shearin Jan 2002

The Owl Question, Faith Shearin

Swenson Poetry Award Winners

May Swenson Poetry Award Volume 6, with foreward by Mark Doty. The Owl Question underscores and relishes life's transitions from young girl to woman, from child to wife to mother, and from isolation to connection this poet's bright sense of abundance and awe, here expressed in finely tuned detail and refreshingly open observation, reads like a collective memory. Though private and closely held, these questionings are as familiar as our own souls, and in their transformation to poetry, Shearin has created the very "map" she wishes to guide her when she "can't learn the world fast enough."

English Composition As A Happening, Geoffrey Sirc Jan 2002

English Composition As A Happening, Geoffrey Sirc

All USU Press Publications

From the Introduction: "Contemporary Composition is still inflected by the epistemic turn taken in the 1980s, convincing me that we need to remember what we've forgotten—namely, how impassioned resolves and thrilling discoveries were abandoned and why. I'd like to retrace the road not taken in Composition Studies, to salvage what can still be recovered... I want to inspect the wreckage, in order to show what was the promise of the Happenings for Composition, as well as the huge gray longueur of its pale replacement, Eighties Composition. In so doing, I hope to begin a reconfiguration of our field's pre- and …

Writing With Elbow, Pat Belanoff, Marcia Dickson, Sheryl I. Fontaine, Charles Moran Jan 2002

Writing With Elbow, Pat Belanoff, Marcia Dickson, Sheryl I. Fontaine, Charles Moran

All USU Press Publications

Peter Elbow is one of those scholars who had such an impact on his field that by mid-career he had already attained icon status. As an early proponent of what became known as process theory, Elbow, with others working along similar lines, developed a powerful body of theory that gradually reoriented instruction in writing toward an emphasis on invention and revision-toward the process of writing as a mode of thinking-and consequently toward a focus on the interaction between writer and audience, instead of on the traditionally conceived product of writing, the text. It is not too much to claim that …

Meat Traceability: Are U.S. Consumers Willing To Pay For It?, David L. Dickenson, Deevon Bailey Jan 2002

Meat Traceability: Are U.S. Consumers Willing To Pay For It?, David L. Dickenson, Deevon Bailey

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This article reports the results from a series of laboratory auction markets in which consumers bid on meat characteristics. The characteristics examined include meat traceability (i.e., the ability to trace the retail meat back to the farm or animal or origin), transparency (e.g., knowing that the meat was produced without growth hormones, or knowing the animal was humanely treated), and assurances (e.g., extra meat safety assurances). This laboratory study provides non-hypothetical bid data on U.S. consumer preferences for traceability, transparency, and assurances (TTA) in red meat at a time when the U.S. currently lags other countries in development ofTTA meat …

When Talk Is Not Cheap: Substantive Penance And Expressions Of Intent In Rebuilding Cooperation, William P. Bottom, Kevin Gibson, Steven E. Daniels, J. Keith Murnighan

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Interpersonal relationships can be fragile. The mere perception of opportunistic behavior can lead to a breakdown in cooperation. Once damaged, the question then arises as to whether and how cooperation might be restored. Noncooperative game theory raises serious doubts about the possibilities, although interactional justice and impression management research have shown that verbal explanations can dampen reactions to aversive behavior. Philosophical, anthropological, and ethological research all suggest that genuine forgiveness may require something more tangible and substantive than an explanation. Thus, the current experiment investigated the effects of explanations and varying forms of substantive amends on the restoration of mutual …
