The Postcranial Skeleton Of The Family Limnoscelidae And Its Taxonomic Implications For Understanding Basal Amniotes, Natalia Kazimiera Wideman Jan 2002

The Postcranial Skeleton Of The Family Limnoscelidae And Its Taxonomic Implications For Understanding Basal Amniotes, Natalia Kazimiera Wideman

Theses Digitization Project

The Diadectomorpha is a central taxon in understanding the origin and early evolution of amniotes. It is considered a sister taxon to Amniota and is so similar to amniotes that some researchers have placed it within the Amniota itself. This group is composed of three families: the Limnoscelidae, the Tseajaiidae, and the Diadectidae. Being the most basal member of this group, the family Limnoscelidae is especially important in these studies.

Actin Dynamics Regulate Myosin Assembly In Muscle Cells, John Dylan Cook Jan 2002

Actin Dynamics Regulate Myosin Assembly In Muscle Cells, John Dylan Cook

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

During muscle cell (i.e. myocyte )development, organization of actin and myosin into the contractile unit (i.e. sarcomere) is required for proper muscle contraction. By disrupting the processes of muscle cell development, I am able to see which steps play important roles in proper maturation of myocytes. Elucidation of the key pathways in muscle development could lead to a better understanding of human cardiac hypertrophies and muscle myopathies. Since actin filament formation precedes myosin organization, I am using actin assembly inhibitors to determine if actin filaments are a necessary prerequisite for myosin organization. It is hypothesized that disruption of actin will …

Background

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bias and precision of 46 methods published from 1953 to 2000 for estimating resting energy expenditure (REE) of thermally injured patients.

Methods

Twenty-four adult patients with ≥20% body surface area burn admitted to a burn center who required specialized nutrition support and who had their REE measured via indirect calorimetry (IC) were evaluated. Patients with morbid obesity, human immunovirus, malignancy, pregnancy, hepatic or renal failure, neuromuscular paralysis, or those requiring a FiO2 >50% or positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) ≥10 cm H2O were excluded. One steady-state measured REE measurement (MEE) …

Roman Law In American Law: Twentieth Century Cases Of The Supreme Court, Samuel J. Astorino Jan 2002

Roman Law In American Law: Twentieth Century Cases Of The Supreme Court, Samuel J. Astorino

Duquesne Law Review

One of the most enduring problems of the legal history of the West concerns the influence of Roman law on the development and nature of subsequent legal systems. This Article examines cases decided roughly in the twentieth century by the United States Supreme Court in order to evaluate the manner, and extent, that that tribunal used Roman law. Legal historians who have ably chronicled the patterns of American legal development have almost totally ignored the presence of Roman doctrines in the jurisprudence of the United States. This Article delves into Roman Law in twentieth century Supreme Court cases to illustrate …

Probability And Statistics In The Legal Curriculum: A Case Study In Disciplinary Aspects Of Interdisciplinary, Mike Townsend, Thomas Richardson

Duquesne Law Review

This Article provides a general taxonomy for various types of educational interdisciplinarity. The discussion focuses, however, on what is called crossdisciplinary education, using a particular mathematics-based example to illustrate how crossdisciplinary education can be used to ask law students to (re)examine law as a discipline. The Article considers interdisciplinarity and the legal curriculum in the context of probability and statistics, using the well-known jury discrimination case of Castaneda v. Partida as a case study. The Article concludes with some brief observations on the importance of thinking about law as a discipline. This is the third installment of a work in …

Environmental Assessment : Middle Salt Creek Canyon Access Plan Canyonlands National Park, Utah, National Park Service, U.S. Department Of The Interior, Canyonlands National Park

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

Salt Creek is the largest drainage in the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park. The creek supports one of the most important riparian ecosystems in the park. It is also the heart of the Salt Creek National Register Archeological District, the area with the highest recorded density of archeological sites in the park. A tributary canyon contains the spectacular Angel Arch, a well-known geologic formation that for many years has been a destination point for park visitors. In 1998 the U.S. District Court for the State of Utah ruled, in a lawsuit filed by the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, that …

Native Plants: The Preservation And Restoration Of Native Plants In Designed Landscapes In Northwest Arkansas, Janet Coleman Jan 2002

Native Plants: The Preservation And Restoration Of Native Plants In Designed Landscapes In Northwest Arkansas, Janet Coleman

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

A decline in Northwest Arkansas's native plant population has occurred over the past 50 years, as documented by the U.S. Forest Service in the Ozark-Ouachita Highlands Assessment. This decline has been caused by increased human development in natural areas and the replacement of native plants with exotic, non-native plants. As a result, a generation has grown up not knowing what an Ozark wake Robin trillium (Trillium pusillum var. ozarkanum) or Blood root (Sanguinaria canadensis) Look like, because these plants are difficult to find in nature, are not commonly grown in designed landscapes, and are Largely unavailable in garden centers. The …

Characterization Of Wound-Inducible Genes Encoding Enzymes For Terpenoid Biosynthesis In Medicago Truncatula, Mandy M. Cox Jan 2002

Characterization Of Wound-Inducible Genes Encoding Enzymes For Terpenoid Biosynthesis In Medicago Truncatula, Mandy M. Cox

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

In addition to having numerous applications as food flavorings and pharmaceuticals, terpenoids are an important class of defensive compounds that can accumulate in plants after pathogen infection or injury by insects. Sequences of DNA encoding putative terpene synthases and an oxidosqualene synthase, isolated from insect-damaged Medicago truncatula leaves, were selected from an expressed sequence tag (EST) database. The eDNA clones were used as radiolabeled probes to analyze gene expression in leaves treated with factors known to trigger a defense response in plants. Transcript levels for all of the genes examined increased in response to artificial wounding, insect herbivory, and methyl …

Workflow Quality Of Service, Jorge Cardoso, Amit P. Sheth, John A. Miller

Kno.e.sis Publications

Workflow management systems (WfMSs) have been used to support various types of business processes for more than a decade now. In ecommerce processes, suppliers and customers define a binding agreement or contract between the two parties, specifying quality of service (QoS) items such as products or services to be delivered, deadlines, quality of products, and cost of service. Management of such QoS directly impacts success of organizations participating in e-commerce. Organizations operating in modern markets require an excellent degree of quality of service management. Products and services must be available to customers with well-defined specifications. A good management of quality …

(Un)Ethical Actions: Activities On Deceptive Personal Acts, Advertisements, And Speeches, Chrys Egan Jan 2002

(Un)Ethical Actions: Activities On Deceptive Personal Acts, Advertisements, And Speeches, Chrys Egan

Iowa Journal of Communication

Goal: To foster pragmatic understanding of communication ethics and to help students consider responsible communication choices that they face in their everyday public and private lives.

"Communication Ethics" is not oxymoronic. Although public figures, politicians, the media, corporations, and daily acquaintances may challenge this notion, communication scholars need to remind ourselves and our students of the essentialness of responsible speech. Therefore, all communication courses should involve some consideration of speech ethics, rights, and responsibilities.

Physical And Numerical Modeling Of The Role Of Hydrodynamic Processes On Adult-Larval Interactions Of A Suspension-Feeding Bivalve, Mats Lindegarth, Per R. Jonsson, Carl André

Journal of Marine Research

The importance of hydrodynamic processes for adult-larval interactions in the cockle, Cerastoderma edule, was examined through physical and numerical modeling. A set of physical experiments in a flow-tank using adult cockles and larval mimics showed that the settlement of particles was affected by adult cockles. Settlement was reduced by 20% in an area of 2.5 cm2 surrounding the siphons, and the most marked decrease occurred near the inhalant siphon. On a larger spatial scale downstream of the siphons, settlement was more heterogeneous compared to surfaces without cockles. The experimental results near individual cockles were compared with numerical models …

Zooplankton Biomass And Indices Of Feeding And Metabolism In Relation To An Upwelling Filament Off Northwest Africa, S. Hernández-León, C. Almeida, A. Portillo-Hahnefeld, M. Gómez, J. M. Rodríguez, J. Arístegui

Journal of Marine Research

Zooplankton biomass and indices of grazing (gut fluorescence), respiration (electron transfer system activity, ETS) and growth (aspartate transcarbamylase, ATC) were studied in relation to an upwelling filament off northwest Africa during August 1993. The filament extended 150 km offshore into the oligotrophic waters. It was generated by a trapped, quasi-permanent cyclonic eddy located between the Canary Islands and the African shelf. High biomass, specific gut fluorescence and electron transfer system activity in zooplankton were observed along the filament structure. In contrast, low values of biomass, gut fluorescence, ETS and ATC specific activities were found in the center of the trapped …

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

Cybersurgery is a surgical technique that allows a surgeon, using a telecommunication conduit connected to a robotic instrument, to operate on a remote patient. As a medical doctor, the author discusses the place of cybersurgery in the U.S. health care system of the new millennium. The author first reviews the field of cybersurgery and how the automatic surgeon will make off-line remote surgery possible. Then, he examines the global economy in health care systems and the impact of cybersurgery on closure of community hospitals and displacing physicians. Consequently, he discusses the ability of these entities to protect themselves with trade …

The Fullest Possible Accounting: The Myth Of American Pow/Mias In Southeast Asia, David L. Sutton Jan 2002

The Fullest Possible Accounting: The Myth Of American Pow/Mias In Southeast Asia, David L. Sutton

Iowa Journal of Communication

This essay examines the Vietnam War POW/MIA myth, the belief in the existence of living, breathing Americans soldiers still held captive in the remote jungles of Southeast Asia. This essay takes the position that the Vietnam War POW/MIA myth is not the sole product of a slick and manipulative U.S. government public relations campaign; rather, this contemporary myth finds its origin in the American monomyth, a long-standing cultural narrative.

Trademark Exhaustion In The European Union: Community-Wide Or International? The Saga Continues, Irene Calboli Jan 2002

Trademark Exhaustion In The European Union: Community-Wide Or International? The Saga Continues, Irene Calboli

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

Dr. Calboli discusses trademark exhaustion in the European Union. She proposes an international exhaustion standard to replace the community-wide exhaustion standard. In an international system, a trademark owner would exhaust his rights in other national jurisdictions when trademarked goods are placed on the market in any national jurisdiction where the trademark owner enjoys protection. Accordingly, the trademark owner will not be free to prevent international importation of genuine products bearing his trademark. Dr. Calboli describes the development of the community-wide exhaustion standard and its interpretative problems as part of the Trademark Directive. She then proposes changing to an international exhaustion …

Determination Of The Protein Fraction And Presence Of Antibodies In The Seminal Fluid Of Llama (Lama Glama), Francisco Flores Lopes Jan 2002

Determination Of The Protein Fraction And Presence Of Antibodies In The Seminal Fluid Of Llama (Lama Glama), Francisco Flores Lopes

Theses and Dissertations

At an international level, Bolivia possesses the largest population of llamas followed by Peru. This makes our country a power, in this renewable resource, to create and generate economic development primarily for the quality of llama meat which has nutritional properties superior to other species of animals used for food. The development of the investigation of llamas in our country has not been very far-reaching. In other countries, advances have been made for quite some time, specifically in the area of reproduction, which presents problems in bringing about an intensive repopulation due to the unique characteristics of llama copulation and …
