Glycogen Resynthesis And Recovery From Exercise: Effects Of Very-Long Chain Acyl-Coenzyme, A Dehydrogenase Deficiency, Kyle E. Johnson Jan 2002

Glycogen Resynthesis And Recovery From Exercise: Effects Of Very-Long Chain Acyl-Coenzyme, A Dehydrogenase Deficiency, Kyle E. Johnson

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Disorders of fatty acid metabolism pose a variety of problems including hypoglycemia, muscle weakness, muscle cramping, rhabdomyolysis, and, in the most severe cases, death. Individuals with a deficiency of very-long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (VLCAD ), the enzyme initiating the oxidation of very-long-chain fatty acids, are particularly prone to exercised-induced declines in muscle function because oft he importance of very-long-chain fatty acids to energy metabolism in exercise. The purpose of this project was to study muscle glycogen resynthesis in the recovery from high intensity exercise in VLCAD deficient mice. Recovery of skeletal muscle function (gastrocnemius) following exercise is not as rapid in …

Re-Bonjour À La Négritude: La Question De La «Race» Dans Un Roman Des Années 90, L'Impasse De Daniel Biyaoula, Lydie Moudileno Jan 2002

Re-Bonjour À La Négritude: La Question De La «Race» Dans Un Roman Des Années 90, L'Impasse De Daniel Biyaoula, Lydie Moudileno

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

While it had somewhat disappeared as a central preoccupation in recent African fiction, the issue of "race" comes up in a striking way in Daniel Biyaoula's first novel, L 'impasse. Published in 1996, L'impasse sets out to expose through the eye of a rather cynical first-person narrator the neurotic nature of postcolonial subjects' relation to his/her racialized origin. Focusing on the body as a site of authenticity or alienation, the novel can be read as a contemporary and creative version of the "Black experience" as Franz Fanon theorized it almost half a century before in Black Skin White Masks. This …

Voies Et Champs Du Feu Dans L'Œuvre Romanesque De Farjallah Haïk, Georges Khoriaty Jan 2002

Voies Et Champs Du Feu Dans L'Œuvre Romanesque De Farjallah Haïk, Georges Khoriaty

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

In the fiction of Farjallah Hark, fire and heat constitute distinguished means of expression in various fields. In his conception of fire, there is an intermingling between what is natural and what is social; good and evil are both employed, and a group of complexes are formed, such as the Promethee complex, the Empedocle complex, or the Novalis complex. Fire, in the view of Ha'ik, has several forms: sexual fire which moves the body instinct; cathartic or purgatorial fire which allows the sublimation of inclinations, and the rebellious fire which destroys all that is fixed in man, and the fire …

Managing Runoff Following Manure Application, John E. Gilley, L. Mark Risse, Bahman Eghball Jan 2002

Managing Runoff Following Manure Application, John E. Gilley, L. Mark Risse, Bahman Eghball

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Rainfall patterns, soil factors, topography, climate, and land use may all influence runoff. To minimize environmental concerns, excessive runoff should be avoided on areas where manure has been applied. Management practices used to control runoff include contouring, strip cropping, conservation tillage, terraces, and buffer strips. In some cases, secondary containment systems, sedimentation basins, or ponds may be necessary to collect runoff. More than one runoff-control practice may be necessary for protection in areas with high runoff potential. Soil properties, including infiltration, may be improved by manure application. The method, rate and timing of manure application should be considered to reduce …

Deforestation, Stephen Delfaus Jan 2002

Deforestation, Stephen Delfaus

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

The more forests that are destroyed, the more harm that is brought upon every species in existence, including humanity.

Stephen Delfaus is currently a sophomore majoring in Chemistry, but was a freshman when he wrote this essay for Honor Johnson’s GWRIT 102 course. His idea for the essay came, in part, from watching The Matrix and (more specifically) Medicine Man, a film about a doctor in Brazil searching for a cancer cure. He hopes that we will take a more active role in saving our environment.

Iridescent Swirls Of Death, Anne Bradshaw

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

I imagine oil spills to be somewhat cartoon in nature. A thick oozing black blanket of death starts to cover everything within its reach and then stretches out for more.

Anne Bradshaw: My name is Anne Bradshaw and I love to be under the sky. I want to spend my life helping people to reach for their dreams. Small victories can be as exciting as the great. I seek to live my life as a conscious world citizen. I have hope for a more peaceful existence as a world community. I love to travel and experience new ideas. I …

Folate Synthesis In Plants: The First Step Of The Pterin Branch Is Mediated By A Unique Bimodular Gtp Cyclohydrolase I, Gilles J. C. Basset, Eoin P. Quinlivan, Michael J. Folate Synthesis In Plants: The First Step Of The Pterin Branch Is Mediated By A Unique Bimodular Gtp Cyclohydrolase I, Gilles J. C. Basset, Eoin P. Quinlivan, Michael J. Ziemak, Rocío Díaz De La Garza, Markus Fischer, Susi Schiffmann, Adelbert Bacher, Jesse F. Gergory Iii, Andrew D. Hanson

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

GTP cyclohydrolase I (GCHI) mediates the first and committing step of the pterin branch of the folate-synthesis pathway. In microorganisms and mammals, GCHI is a homodecamer of ≈26-kDa subunits. Genomic approaches identified tomato and Arabidopsis cDNAs specifying ≈50-kDa proteins containing two GCHI-like domains in tandem and indicated that such bimodular proteins occur in other plants. Neither domain of these proteins has a full set of the residues involved in substrate binding and catalysis in other GCHIs. The tomato and Arabidopsis cDNAs nevertheless encode functional enzymes, as shown by complementation of a yeast fol2 mutant and by assaying GCHI activity …

The Re-Cognition Of Being's Infrastructure As Self-Completion, Herbert Guenther Jan 2002

The Re-Cognition Of Being's Infrastructure As Self-Completion, Herbert Guenther

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Wholeness as indivisible and the human being's connectedness with it are the abiding themes

of the Buddhist experience-rooted and process-oriented thinking that goes by the name of

rDzogs-chen. From its basically holistic point of view, the human being is a sub-whole,

similar to a variation on a musical theme. From another point of view, however, based on

the confusion of a compacted (and hence de-compactable) totality with wholeness, the human

being is seen as being a reality that is internally divided and feels uncertain about who/

what he really is. Together, the intolerable feelings of being divided and uncertain cause …

The Last Time I Saw Fritz, Marc L. Joslyn Jan 2002

The Last Time I Saw Fritz, Marc L. Joslyn

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Zen is not merely an exotic practice imported from the Orient; it is the constantly fresh

realization ofTrue Nature everywhere and at every time. So, it may be expected that sparks

of Zen will be found in all cultures. Hence, having been engaged with Zen practice since 1964,

the author reminisces here about how he turned to Zen after his study of Gestalt psychology

and his encounter with Gestalt therapy in the person ofFritz Perls. Gestalt therapy as usually

practiced is not Zen, the author concludes. But if it clears the way for a glimmer of the Self

which has …

Space Time Event Motion (Stem) – A Better Metaphor And A New Concept, Joseph Naimo Jan 2002

Space Time Event Motion (Stem) – A Better Metaphor And A New Concept, Joseph Naimo

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

The content of this paper is primarily the product of an attempt to understand consciousness by working through the Gestell - conventionalised epistemology, at least some of several foundational concepts. This paper indirectly addresses the ancient question: “How is objective reference – or intentionality, possible? How is it possible for one thing to direct its thoughts upon another thing?” (Chisholm, 1981:1) As such, I have adopted a holistic methodology; one in which I develop a framework based on a form of process philosophy and descriptive emergentism (1). Many of the problems associated within the philosophy of mind arise because of …

Isolation And Characterization Of A Virus That Infects Emiliania Huxleyi (Haptophyta), Tonje Castberg, Runar Thyrhaug, Aud Larsen, Ruth-Anne Sandaa, Mikal Heldal, James L. Van Etten, Gunnar Bratbak

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The isolation and characterization of a virus (designated EhV) that infects the marine coccolithophorid Emiliania huxleyi (Lohmann) Hay & Mohler are described. Three independent clones of EhV were isolated from Norwegian coastal waters in years 1999 and 2000. EhV is a double-stranded DNA-containing virus with a genome size of ~415 kilo-base pairs. The viral particle is an icosahedron with a diameter of 160–180 nm. The virus particle contains at least nine proteins ranging from 10 to 140 kDa; the major capsid protein weighs ~54 kDa. EhV has a latent period of 12–14 h and a burst size of 400–1,000 (mean, …

Effects Of Taurine And Ginkgo Biloba Extract On Platelet Aggregation, Mitchell G. Miglis Jan 2002

Effects Of Taurine And Ginkgo Biloba Extract On Platelet Aggregation, Mitchell G. Miglis

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Effects of the leaf extract Ginkgo biloba, ginkgolides A and B, and the amino acid taurine (2-aminoethane sulfonic acid) on platelet aggregation was studied. All potential anitcoagulants were incubated in day one platelet-rich plasma and subjected to various agonist-induced clotting and tests and other measures of platelet viability. G. biloba extract and its respective ginkgolides had no effect on platelet aggregation in response to ADP and thrombin, while taurine exhibited prolongation of thrombin time (TT) and reduced thrombin-induced aggregation by 10%. Taurine prolonged time of initial clot formation on thrombolestographic tests, but overall clot viability remained unaffected. These data …

Ningyo: Destined For The Trash Can?, Anita Y.K. Davis

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Japanese Ningyo (dolls) are static art, individual sculptures and expressions of creativity. This paper explores the loss of these wonderful works of art. While western dolls fetch high prices and are highly sought after if even a few decades old, we explore the destination of most ningyo as they fail to be recognized or preserved. Particularly the dolls fashioned by women to decorate their homes, as their beauty fades they are set aside. What has happened to them? What is taking their place as globalization is changing the decorating desires of the Japanese?
