A Northeast Dairy Perspective Of Farming And Conservation, Carl W. Schwartz Jan 2002

A Northeast Dairy Perspective Of Farming And Conservation, Carl W. Schwartz

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

An oxcart brought Colonel John Randall the 300 or so miles from Stonington, Connecticut, to Pharsalia, New York, to build the first house in town in 1797. The lands were wooded with mixed northern hardwoods (beech, birch, maple) growing in thin rocky soils. By 1875, when Berthier Mathewson, farmer and justice of the peace, owned the property, nearly 70 percent of the 23,458 acres in Pharsalia had been improved, leaving only 7,651 acres wooded. Gross sales of farm products that year totaled $71,382 and, aside from a couple of merchants, a hotel keeper and a saw mill, farming was the …

Determination Of Impacts On The Endangered Wyoming Toad (Bufo Baxteri) At Mortenson National Wildlife Refuge From Ammonium Nitrate Concentrations, Edward E. Little, Robin D. Calfee, Kimberly Dickerson

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The endangered Wyoming toad (Bufo baxteri) is found only as a reintroduced population at Mortenson National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in the Laramie Plains of southeast Wyoming. Reasons for the decline of this amphibian are unknown. Data on predation, habitat modification, soil and water conditions (Stone 1991), and water quality (Ramirez 1992; Ramirez and Armstrong 1992), are available; but, none of these parameters are documented as posing serious threats to the toad.

One threat that has not been investigated is the potential for agricultural fertilizers containing nitrates to enter surface water at Mortenson NWR. Nitrates are transported by irrigation …

Oil Field Produced Water Discharges Into Wetlands In Wyoming, Pedro Ramirez Jr. Jan 2002

Oil Field Produced Water Discharges Into Wetlands In Wyoming, Pedro Ramirez Jr.

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Approximately 600 oil field produced water discharges are permitted in Wyoming by the State’s Department of Environmental Quality's (WDEQ) National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit program. Wyoming is one of a few states that allows the discharge of oil field produced water into surface waters for beneficial use by livestock and wildlife. Sixty-six wetland sites receiving oil field produced water discharges in Wyoming were surveyed to determine the percentage of discharges in compliance with NPDES permit requirements and to determine the amount of chronic oil releases associated with these discharges. Separator pits were also surveyed to determine wildlife mortality …

American Woodcock Population Status, 2002, James R. Kelley Jr.

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Singing-ground and Wing-collection surveys were conducted to assess the population status of the American woodcock (Scolopax minor). Singing-ground Survey data indicated that the number of displaying woodcock in the Eastern Region was 1.3% lower than in 2001, but this decrease was non-significant (P>0.1). In the Central Region, there was a 7.9% decrease in the number of woodcock heard displaying compared to 2001 levels, but this decrease also was nonsignificant (P>0.1). Trends from the Singing-ground Survey during 1992-02 were –2.1 and –1.5% per year for the Eastern and Central regions, respectively (P<0.01). There were long-term (1968-02) declines (P<0.01) of 2.3% per year in the Eastern Region and 1.6% per year in the Central Region. The 2001 recruitment index for the Eastern Region (1.4 immatures per adult female) was the same as the 2000 index, but was 18% below the long-term regional average. The 2001 recruitment index for the Central Region (1.3 immatures per adult female) was slightly higher than the 2000 index (1.2 immatures per adult female), but was 23% below the long-term regional average of 1.7. The index of daily hunting success in the Eastern Region was 2.0 woodcock per successful hunt in both 2000 and 2001, and seasonal hunting success was 8.7 woodcock per successful hunter in both years. In the Central Region, the daily success index increased slightly from 2.0 woodcock per successful hunt in 2000 to 2.1 in 2001; but seasonal hunting success decreased from 10.7 to 10.5 woodcock per successful hunter.

Was There Satan's Face In The World Trade Center Fire? A Geometric Analysis, Vladik Kreinovich, Dima Iourinski

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Some photos of the 2001 World Trade Center fire reveal a "face" in the smoke which was interpreted, by some people, as the face of Satan. Most journalists believe, however, that the visible smoke configuration can be explained by natural processes, and that the visible "face" is similar to animal shapes that are sometimes observed in the clouds. In this paper, we present a simple geometric analysis that supports this natural-process explanation.

A Personal Professional Vision For Elementary Principalship : A Reflective Essay, Doreen A. Knuth

Graduate Research Papers

The business of running public schools to prepare our youngsters to be productive members of society is a very complex task. It is not enough to simply have a vision based on values and beliefs, but one must also possess the necessary skills to · transform that vision into reality. Dr. Lorraine Monroe, a successful leader in the field of educational leadership, sums this up by saying, "Most important is that the leader continue not only to believe in the dream and the need to pursue it but also to do the hard brain work of never doubting its importance," …

The Effects Of Life Review On Well-Being In The Elderly, Karen Michelle Fagerstrom Jan 2002

The Effects Of Life Review On Well-Being In The Elderly, Karen Michelle Fagerstrom

Theses Digitization Project

It is widely believed among developmental psychologists that old age is a distinct developmental stage with unique goals, struggles and opportunities for growth. Achieving integrity involves making sense of disparate aspects of one's life and seing life as one complete whole, rather than bits and pieces of a puzzle. Integrity is achieved when each part of the puzzle is put into place, forming one complete picture.

The Teenage Market And The Fashion Industry In France And In Theunited States, Cathy Dorothee Aubert

Theses Digitization Project

This project dealt with the teenage market in France and in the United States. Its aim was to provide the readers with an overview of this market and outline distribution and communication strategies that manufacturers and retailers can use to attract this market to make their business grow. Until a few years ago, the fashion industry did not pursue this market. In stores, most brands were dividing their clothing range into three catagories, women, men, and children. As a growing market with over 23 million teens in the U.S. and over 5.4 million in France, teenagers have an incredible spending …

The Old Man And The Sea: Hemingway, Heteroglossia, And The Hero's Voice, Carole Sue Spitler Jan 2002

The Old Man And The Sea: Hemingway, Heteroglossia, And The Hero's Voice, Carole Sue Spitler

Theses Digitization Project

In this subjective hero concept lies an intriguing aspect of Bakhtin's paradigm: A hero is not necessarily a living entity; a hero can be ideas, objects and locations. When viewed through the lens of traditional western rhetorical theory, Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea appears as a monologue wherein Santiago seemingly speaks for the author about the subject of doom and man's relationship to the world.

Microfinance Among The Maya: Tracking The Progress Of Borrowers, Bruce Wydick Jan 2002

Microfinance Among The Maya: Tracking The Progress Of Borrowers, Bruce Wydick

Economics Faculty Publications

Microfinance has become an increasingly widespread tool for fostering economic growth among the poor in developing countries. This study tracks the progress of 239 borrowers in a Guatemalan microfinance institution from 1994 to 1999. Results from the study show that rapid gains in employment within the sample enterprises after initial credit access were followed by a protracted period of stagnation in employment growth. Other results highlight gender differences in response to credit access, showing — surprisingly — that the long–run growth in hired labour for female entrepreneurs was slightly greater than that for male entrepreneurs.

Dancing With The Trickster Notes For A Transpersonal Autobiography, Stanley Krippner

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This autobiographical essay focuses on "transpersonal," "anomalous," and "exceptional"

Nevertheless, these experiences have life-transformative potentials that may be more salient

than the activities usually serving as the basis for autobiographical accounts.

The History Of Sanity In Contemplative Psychotherapy, Edward M. Podvoll Jan 2002

The History Of Sanity In Contemplative Psychotherapy, Edward M. Podvoll

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

A patient in therapy has two kinds of psychological history: a history of sanity as well as a history of illness. In order for healthy development to begin within the therapeutic relationship, it is necessary that both patient and therapist shift their allegiance towards the history of sanity. Landmark events in that history can be found in both developmental moments and in the current experience of neurosis or psychosis. Six types of landmarks derived from clinical experience reveal the history of sanity. The patient has periods of repulsion when feeling estranged from life and nauseated about his or her way …
