Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Borrelia burgdorferi B31MI carries 18 plasmid-carried genes that form the bdr gene family. The bdr genes of B. burgdorferi encode proteins that form three distinct subfamilies, the BdrD, BdrE, and BdrF subfamilies. bdr orthologs have been demonstrated to be carried by all Borrelia species analyzed, and their widespread distribution suggests that they play an important genus-wide functional role. The biological rationale for maintaining 18 bdr alleles has not been defined. It is our hypothesis that specific paralogs function in different environments and are differentially expressed in response to environmental conditions. As a first step in testing this hypothesis, the production …

Macrohabitat Composition Surrounding Successful And Depredated Northern Bobwhite Nests, Eric L. Staller, William E. Palmer, John P. Carroll Jan 2002

Macrohabitat Composition Surrounding Successful And Depredated Northern Bobwhite Nests, Eric L. Staller, William E. Palmer, John P. Carroll

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Relationships among macrohabitat and depredation of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) nests are poorly understood. Yet, macrohabitat composition may influence the nest predator community and, therefore, the vulnerability of northern bobwhite nests to depredation. We determined if macrohabitat composition surrounding bobwhite nests influenced nest placement, nest success, and which predators were responsible for depredating nests. We characterized macrohabitats at 2 scales, 8 and 16 ha, by surrounding both bobwhite nests, and an equal number of random locations, with a circular buffer. Random points were placed within the area used by bobwhites on our study area. We then determined the …

Ec02-177 Purple Loosestrife, Stevan Z. Knezevic Jan 2002

Ec02-177 Purple Loosestrife, Stevan Z. Knezevic

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) is an introduced invasive weed that isover running thousands of acres of wetlands and waterways in the Midwest. Once purple loosestrife invades a wetland, natural habitat is lost and the productivity of native plant and animal communities is severely reduced. These losses in turn interfere with various levels of the ecosystem and area recreational activities such as fishing, boating and hunting, diminishing revenue from tourism and impairing the social and economic well being of local communities. A single control measure cannot provide long-term, sustainable control of this weed. An integrated approach, using a variety …

Problems With Developmental Stability In Two Rodent Species From Chornobyl, Taras K. Oleksyk, Michael H. Smith, Sergiy P. Gashchak, James M. Novak, James R. Purdue Jan 2002

Problems With Developmental Stability In Two Rodent Species From Chornobyl, Taras K. Oleksyk, Michael H. Smith, Sergiy P. Gashchak, James M. Novak, James R. Purdue

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Changes in developmental patterns are some of the most important effects that may be observed at radioactively contaminated sites like those at Chornobyl. Developmental instability may arise from the interactions between an organism's genotype and its environment and be manifested as deviant morphology. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is a measure of deviations from the expected bilateral symmetry of the body. Our objective was to test for differences in FA in two rodent species (Apodemus flavicollis and Clethrionomys glareolus) that live in habitats suirounding the failed Chornobyl reactor. Rodents were collected from four different locations (two contaminated and two reference sites), and …

Carvacrol And Thymol Reduce Swine Waste Odor And Pathogens: Stability Of Oils, Vincent H. Varel Jan 2002

Carvacrol And Thymol Reduce Swine Waste Odor And Pathogens: Stability Of Oils, Vincent H. Varel

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

An incomplete anoxic fermentation of livestock waste results in offensive odor emissions. Antimicrobial additives may be useful in controlling odor emissions and pathogens. Natural antimicrobial compounds, carvacrol or thymol at 16.75 mM (2.5 g/l) completely inhibited the production of the offensive odor compounds, isobutyrate, valerate, isovalerate, and cresol, and significantly reduced other short-chain volatile fatty acids and gas emissions from swine waste. Fecal coliforms were reduced from 6.3 X 106 to 1.0 X 103 cells per ml 2 days after treatment with carvacrol (13.3 mM) and were not detectable within 14 days. Total culturable anaerobic bacteria were reduced from …

Regulation Of Endometrial Granulocyte Macrophage-Colony Stimulating Factor (Gm-Csf) In The Ewe, W. J. Mcguire, K. Imakawa, K. Tamura, C. S. R. Meka, R. K. Christenson Jan 2002

Regulation Of Endometrial Granulocyte Macrophage-Colony Stimulating Factor (Gm-Csf) In The Ewe, W. J. Mcguire, K. Imakawa, K. Tamura, C. S. R. Meka, R. K. Christenson

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) increases ovine interferon-tau (oIFNτ) secretion by ovine conceptuses, but endometrial production of GM-CSF has not been characterized. Endometrial GM-CSF expression was evaluated in ovariectomized ewes implanted with estradiol-17β (E2) and/or progesterone (P4) for 14 days, in day 14 cyclic and day 14 pregnant ewes. Relative levels of endometrial GM-CSF mRNA were 3-fold higher in E2- and E2/P4-treated ewes than that of control or P4-treated ovariectomized ewes. Levels of endometrial GM-CSF mRNA for cyclic ewes were similar to E2- and E2 …

Effect Of Acute And Chronic Alcohol Treatment And Their Superimposition On Lysosomal, Cytoplasmic, And Proteosomal Protease Activities In Rat Skeletal Muscle In Vivo, M. Koll, S. Ahmed, D. Mantle, T.M. Donohue, T.N. Palmer, U.A. Simanowski, H.K. Seitz, T.J. Peters, V.R. Preedy Jan 2002

Effect Of Acute And Chronic Alcohol Treatment And Their Superimposition On Lysosomal, Cytoplasmic, And Proteosomal Protease Activities In Rat Skeletal Muscle In Vivo, M. Koll, S. Ahmed, D. Mantle, T.M. Donohue, T.N. Palmer, U.A. Simanowski, H.K. Seitz, T.J. Peters, V.R. Preedy

United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications

Alcohol can be considered as a nutritional toxin when ingested in excess amounts and leads to skeletal muscle myopathy. We hypothesized that altered protease activities contribute to this phenomenon, and that differential effects on protease activities may occur when: (1) rats at different stages in their development are administered alcohol in vivo; (2) acute ethanol treatment is superimposed on chronic alcohol-feeding in vivo; and (3) muscles are exposed to alcohol and acetaldehyde in vivo and in vitro. In acute studies, rats weighing approximately 0.1 kg (designated immature) or approximately 0.25 kg (designated mature) body weight (BW) were dosed acutely with …

Whatever Happened To G.I. Jane?: Citizenship, Gender, And Social Policy In The Postwar Era, Melissa E. Murray Jan 2002

Whatever Happened To G.I. Jane?: Citizenship, Gender, And Social Policy In The Postwar Era, Melissa E. Murray

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

In this Article, it is argued that the GI Bill is consistent with the social welfare policies of the New Deal period, in particular the Social Security Act of 1935, and so should be examined within the analytical framework established by scholars like Linda Gordon and Theda Skocpol in their studies of the Social Security Act's social welfare programs. Although the Bill is gender-neutral on its face, it was framed by normative assumptions about military participation and work that ensured that it was socially understood to benefit male veterans.

Acoustic Competition In The Gulf Toadfish Opsanus Beta: Acoustic Tagging, Robert F. Thorson, Michael L. Fine Jan 2002

Acoustic Competition In The Gulf Toadfish Opsanus Beta: Acoustic Tagging, Robert F. Thorson, Michael L. Fine

Biology Publications

Nesting male gulf toadfish Opsanus beta produce a boatwhistle advertisement call used in male–male competition and to attract females and an agonistic grunt call. The grunt is a short-duration pulsatile call, and the boatwhistle is a complex call typically consisting of zero to three introductory grunts, a long tonal boop note, and zero to three shorter boops. The beginning of the boop note is also gruntlike. Anomalous boatwhistles contain a short-duration grunt embedded in the tonal portion of the boop or between an introductory grunt and the boop. Embedded grunts have sound-pressure levels and frequency spectra that correspond with those …
