Review Of American Agriculture And The Problem Of Monopoly: The Political Economy Of Grain Belt Farming, 1953-1980 By Jon Lauck, John Mark Hansen Apr 2002

Review Of American Agriculture And The Problem Of Monopoly: The Political Economy Of Grain Belt Farming, 1953-1980 By Jon Lauck, John Mark Hansen

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Through the years, nothing has marked agrarian political discourse on the Great Plains quite as much as the charge of monopoly. Farmers' demands for protection from the firms that purchased their product animated the Populist and Progressive movements in the region and contributed to the regulation of business practices in the grain trades and packing industry. Farmers' search for greater control over their own prices culminated in policies promoting agricultural producer cooperatives during Normalcy and regulating agricultural production during the New Deal.

Design And Deception At Colonial Williamsburg, Anders Greenspan Apr 2002

Design And Deception At Colonial Williamsburg, Anders Greenspan

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

The study of Colonial Williamsburg, which celebrated its seventy-fifth anniversary in December 2001, is a useful means of approaching the discussion of the ways interior decoration and garden design can be used as a means to promote political ideology. While the political role of these two areas of creative expression may not be immediately apparent in a visit to Colonial Williamsburg, they played an instrumental role in the restoration of the eighteenth-century town. They were also part of the original plan of the restoration’s founders to promote in twentieth-century Americans a strong national pride and love of country. At the …

Creating A Common Voice For Liberal Arts Education, Charles F. Blaich, Mauri Ditzler

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

As Sam Schuman so eloquently argues in his lead article, these are challenging times for the liberal arts. A society that owes so much to graduates of liberal arts colleges has come to see them as an education for a simpler time.
Why does a liberal arts education now seem out of place? Perhaps it is that, in times of rapid change, an education that offers the certainty of “textbook solutions” is more comforting than one that promises creative, thoughtful, and flexible “improvisation” in the face of a complex world. It may be that a narrowly focused, carefully applied education …

We Think We Can, We Think We Can…, Samuel Schuman

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

One of the most enduring story books of my childhood, along with Little Toot and The Little Train Who Thought He Could, was the tale of The Little House in the city. It is no surprise that all these are stories of little guys, surrounded by big things, but coming out OK by virtue of pluck and innate value.

Some of you perhaps remember this yarn, written in 1943 by Virginia Lee Burton (also the author of Mike Mulligan, by the way), which I propose as a kind of allegory to kick off our discussion today. The book …

Spatial Description And Analysis Of Grasshopper Abundances In Colorado Rangeland, Kerri Skinner, R. Dennis Child, Thomas O. Holtzer Apr 2002

Spatial Description And Analysis Of Grasshopper Abundances In Colorado Rangeland, Kerri Skinner, R. Dennis Child, Thomas O. Holtzer

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Although rangeland grasshopper populations have been studied for more than 120 years, little is known of the spatial patterns in grasshopper numbers between outbreak cycles. This information is necessary to understand how grasshopper outbreaks develop and to correctly design research, monitoring, and modeling projects. We used exploratory data analysis and geostatistics to identify the spatial patterns in grasshopper numbers for 1993 through 1997 in Colorado. The same family of models (spherical) provided the best fit to the sample data for all years, which implies that similar processes influenced grasshopper densities over these years. The parameters of the models differed among …

Latino Families In The Perinatal Period: Cultural Issues In Dealing With The Health-Care System, J. Martin Maldonado-Duran, Maria Manguia-Wellman, Sari Lubin, Teresa Lartigue Apr 2002

Latino Families In The Perinatal Period: Cultural Issues In Dealing With The Health-Care System, J. Martin Maldonado-Duran, Maria Manguia-Wellman, Sari Lubin, Teresa Lartigue

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Migration of young Latinos and Latinas has increased in many towns in the Midwest. These young people will experience the perinatal period in a new cultural environment. We focus on the interface between families of Latino origin and the Midwest health-care system, particularly in the care of the pregnant woman or couple and in the care of the infant. Issues of culture are central in the perinatal period, and often the staff in health-care centers is not aware of the importance of several traditional and "folk" health-care beliefs in this period. These beliefs impact the care of the pregnant woman, …

Effect Of Flea Beetles (Aphthona Nigriscutis) On Prairie Invaded By Leafy Spurge (Euphorbia Esula) In Maintoba, Michelle Mico, Jennifer Shay

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) is an invasive exotic weed in Great Plains rangelands and pastures. Aphthona nigriscutis, the black dot flea beetle, was released as a biological control agent in nine heavily infested sites in south-central Manitoba (three sites in 1986, three in 1988, and three in 1990). In 1992 we evaluated beetle impact by sampling the vegetation in 25 x 25 cm quadrats. We measured cover, height, density, and biomass of leafy spurge, the cover of litter and bare ground, and the presence of other plant species both at the release point and at randomly-chosen nearby …

Court Review: Volume 39, Issue 1 - Recent Criminal Decisions Of The United States Supreme Court: The 2001-2002 Term, Charles H. Whitebread Apr 2002

Court Review: Volume 39, Issue 1 - Recent Criminal Decisions Of The United States Supreme Court: The 2001-2002 Term, Charles H. Whitebread

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

The United States Supreme Court’s 2001-2002 term at least gave the appearance of a more unified Supreme Court— at least when compared to the previous term, which was marked by an overwhelming number of 5-4 decisions—and featured several unanimous or near unanimous decisions. Specifically in the Fourth Amendment area, but also in other cases, the Court seemed at times to break free from the typical conservative-liberal divide that was so salient a year ago. This term, the Court confronted significant issues regarding the increased susceptibility to searches and seizures of bus passengers, students, and probationers; the death penalty and its …

Airline Quality Rating 2002, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley

Airline Quality Rating Report

The Airline Quality Rating (AQR) was developed and first announced in early 1991 as an objective method of comparing airline quality on combined multiple performance criteria. This current report, Airline Quality Rating 2002, reflects monthly Airline Quality Rating scores for 2001. AQR scores for the calendar year 2001 are based on 15 elements that focus on airline performance areas important to air travel consumers.

The Airline Quality Rating 2002 is a summary of month-by-month quality ratings for the 11 largest U.S. airlines operating during 2001. Using the Airline Quality Rating system of weighted averages and monthly performance data in the …

European Starling Apr 2002

European Starling

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

The European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) is a native of Eurasia and North Africa. The starling can be described as a stocky, medium-sized black bird with a short tail. In flight, the starling has a distinctly triangular shape. Starlings breed from March through July. In spring and summer, breeding pairs disperse rather than stay with concentrated flocks. Nests are bulky collections of sticks, dried grasses, other fibers, paper and similar debris.

Relationships Between A Quaternary Model Of Psychological Type Processes And Defense Mechanism Clusters, Kathryn Elizabeth Kelly Apr 2002

Relationships Between A Quaternary Model Of Psychological Type Processes And Defense Mechanism Clusters, Kathryn Elizabeth Kelly

Doctoral Dissertations

This study examined the relationships between two psychological type dimensions (Extraversion-Introversion and Thinking-Feeling) and defense mechanism preferences. Psychological Type Theory was used as a conceptual framework for the generation of hypotheses. Specific hypotheses between the two psychological type dimensions and defense mechanism preferences were tested. Further, Extraversion-Introversion and Thinking-Feeling were combined, resulting in the formation of a quaternary personality model consisting of four groups (Introverted Thinking, Introverted Feeling, Extraverted Thinking, and Extraverted Feeling). Hypotheses that certain quaternary groups would display specific relationships with defense mechanism preferences were tested. To test hypotheses, 223 university students were administered the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator …

Reproductive Differences Among Delmarva Grass Shrimp (Palaemonetes Pugio And P. Vulgaris) Populations, Holly H. Ganz, Robert E. Knowlton Apr 2002

Reproductive Differences Among Delmarva Grass Shrimp (Palaemonetes Pugio And P. Vulgaris) Populations, Holly H. Ganz, Robert E. Knowlton

Virginia Journal of Science

Populations of female grass shrimps (Palaemonetes pugio and P. vulgaris) were sampled from five coastal embayments in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia (Delmarva) and compared with respect to reproductive and life history attributes. We observed interspecific differences in timing of reproduction, carapace length, ratio of carapace length to total body length, body weight, clutch weight, clutch size, and egg volume. Onset of reproduction in P. vulgaris lagged behind P. pugio. Although there was no difference in the relationship between clutch size and carapace length for the two species, carapace length/total body length in P. pugio was greater than …
